The article discusses the contributions of David Pines on the study and development of the theory of superconductivity. Currently a theoretical physicist at Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico and the Davis-based University of California, Pines together with John Bardeen have showed that it is possible for phonons to generate an attractive force for some electrons despite strong Coulomb repulsion during the 1950s. They have also introduced the Bardeen-Cooper-Schreiffer theory, which has allegedly played a very important role in the development of nuclear physics, astrophysics and particle physics.
