Background: The purpose of this study was to quantify how much of the burden of visual impairment (VI) and unmet need in Talagang, identified by Rapid Assessment of Avoidable Blindness (RAAB) survey data, has been addressed by Community Eye Health (CEH) programme efforts. Methods: A RAAB survey was carried out in November 2018, with 2,824 participants in Talagang Tehsil, Punjab, Pakistan, aged 50 and over. Census data were used to extrapolate survey data to the population. Alongside this, a CEH programme was launched, consisting of community eye screening, and onward referral to rural health centres, secondary or tertiary ophthalmological services, as required. This health intervention aimed to address the eye care needs surfaced by the initial survey. From 2018 to 2022, 30,383 people aged 50 or over were screened; 14,054 needed referral to further steps of the treatment pathway and more detailed data collection. Programme data were compared to estimates of population unmet needs. Main outcome measures were prevalence of VI, and proportion of need met by CEH Programme, by cause and level of VI. Results: Among those aged 50 and over, 51.0% had VI in at least one eye. The leading causes were cataract (46.2%) and uncorrected refractive error (URE) (25.0%). In its first four years, the programme reached an estimated 18.3% of the unmet need from cataract, and 21.1% of URE, equally in both men and women. Conclusions: Robustly collected survey and programme data can improve eye health planning, monitoring and evaluation, address inequities, and quantify the resources required for improving eye health. Lack of proper eye care (EC) for mechanically ventilated patients can lead to serious ocular complications. Objective of this study is to develop and validate eyes care bundle for mechanically ventilated patients. A Delphi design study was conducted between March and May 2021. The Content Validity Index (CVI) was used to calculate the degree of agreement among the experts to analyze the bundle. Content validity was determined by 5 experts using a 4-point Likert scale. They evaluated the items in terms of the following: 1 = "irrelevant," 2 = "somewhat relevant if the phrasing is profoundly adjusted," 3 = "relevant with some adjustment," and 4 = "very relevant." The CVI was applied, and the accepted value was ≥0.50. The validation of EC bundle was conducted through 3 rounds after developed it based on the evaluated research evidence. The items were reviewed for content and face validity. The bundle was validated with 5 items with a total CVI of 0.96, a face validity of 1, and a Scale-Level Content Validity Index/Universal Agreement calculation method value of 0.8. We compared recruitment of participants at high risk for glaucoma and other eye diseases in three community-based studies designed to improve access to eye care in underserved populations in New York City, Alabama, and Michigan. We used (1) participant data collected at enrollment (e.g. demographic, medical conditions, healthcare access, and method of hearing about study) and (2) interviews with study staff to assess effective recruitment strategies in enrolling people at high risk for eye disease. We analyzed participant data using descriptive statistics and interview data using content analysis to categorize responses to questions. In these community-based studies, all sites recruited greater proportions of populations with increased risk of eye disease compared to their estimates in the US population. High-risk characteristics varied based on the setting (i.e. Federally Qualified Health Centers or affordable housing buildings). Older adults represented 35% to 57%; 43% to 56% identified as Black; 1% to 40% as Hispanic/Latino; 20% to 42% reported a family history of glaucoma; 32% to 61% reported diabetes; and 50% to 67% reported high blood pressure. Social risk factors for under-utilization of eye care due to poverty included that 43% to 70% of participants had high school or lower education; 16% to 40% were employed; and 7% and 31% had no health insurance. From a qualitative perspective, active, personalized, culturally sensitive methods were most effective in recruiting participants. Implementing eye disease detection interventions in community-based settings facilitated recruiting individuals at high risk for glaucoma and other eye diseases. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Setting: Nineteen ophthalmic and optometric practices in 11 US states. Design: Multicenter, cross-over, six month extension to the SAHARA randomized, controlled trial (RCT). Included patients were those randomized to CsA in Phase 1 of the SAHARA RCT. Methods: This was the second phase of the SAHARA RCT in which, following the 6-month endpoint, all patients that had been randomized to CsA discontinued CsA and were treated with LHT and subsequently followed for an additional six months. Outcome measures at 12 months for CsA patients crossed over to LHT included TBUT, OSDI and MGSS. Results: One hundred and sixty-one patients (322 eyes) were analyzed. Mean (SD) baseline TBUT prior to CsA was 4.4 (1.2) seconds, 5.6 (2.6) at 6 months which improved to 6.6 (3.2) and 6.1 (2.8) seconds (both P < 0.001) at 9 and 12 months (3, 6 months post LHT). Mean (SD) OSDI was 50.0 (14.9) at baseline and 34.2 (21.5) after CsA. With LHT at 6 months, this improved to 30.0 (20.6) and 31.0 (19.5) at 9 and 12 months (P = 0.162 vs month 6, P < 0.0001 vs baseline). MGSS was 7.1 (3.2) at baseline, 13.3 (8.2) at the end of CsA treatment which improved to 17.4 (8.8) and 16.1 (9.0) at 9 and 12 months; both P < 0.001. Conclusion: SAHARA showed 6-month superiority of LHT to CsA in clinical signs and non-inferiority in symptom scores. This extension shows that patients treated with CsA for 6 months can achieve meaningful additional improvement in signs and symptoms lasting for as long as 6 months following a single LHT treatment without the need for topical prescription therapy. Context: This study adds to the existing body of literature on the role of optical coherence tomography (OCT) parameters in active thyroid eye disease (TED) among the Indian population. Purpose: Comparison of choroidal vascularity index (CVI) and subfoveal choroidal thickness (SFCT) in active and inactive TED. Settings and Design: An observational, cross-sectional analytical study conducted at a tertiary eye care hospital in North India that included patients with active and inactive TED. Methods: Demographic details and clinical evaluation were performed for all TED patients. SFCT was determined with OCT by using the Cirrus linear measurement tool. CVI was calculated using Image J software. The SFCT and CVI measurements were compared between both groups. Statistical Analysis Used: Comparison between active and inactive TED groups was done using Mann–Whitney U test for non-parametric data and Student t test for parametric data. Multivariate regression analysis was performed with SFCT and CVI as dependent variables. Results: Sixty-two eyes of 31 patients were included. Thirteen eyes had active TED, and 49 eyes had inactive TED. SFCT was significantly lower in eyes with higher clinical activity score (CAS) and older age. No significant difference was found in CVI between active and inactive TED eyes. Conclusion: SFCT was lower in eyes with higher CAS and older age. Our findings differ from previous studies, which showed a positive correlation between SFCT and CAS. There was no significant difference in CVI between active and inactive TED eyes. Background and purpose: Increasing people's knowledge and then changing their attitude and practice with the aim of taking care of their eye health are very important. Considering the importance of the mentioned topic, the main goal of this study was to evaluate the knowledge, attitude, and practice about eye diseases in the general population of the world in the form of a systematic literature review. Materials and Methods: This study was a systematic literature review study, and to do it, a systematic search was conducted in internationally available databases including Web of Science, ScienceDirect, Scopus, PubMed, and Google Scholar in the time range of 1998 to 2023. Finally, considering the inclusion and exclusion criteria of the study, the results of 18 articles were extracted. Results: The findings showed that in general, people's level of knowledge about glaucoma was lower compared to other eye diseases, and the level of knowledge of men and women about eye diseases was different. In addition, the results showed that there was significant relationship between age and knowledge of various eye diseases. The results of all evaluated studies showed that people with higher education have more knowledge about eye diseases. Conclusion: Based on this, it can be concluded that as glaucoma is one of the most important causes of blindness worldwide, it is necessary to plan to increase the level of public knowledge to recognize the symptoms and complications of this disease. In addition to that, it is necessary to increase people's advertisement by ophthalmology centers and eye specialists about the use of glasses and also to encourage people to visit the eye physician regularly. To assess which signs and eye prosthesis care habits are related to subjective discomfort in patients with dry anophthalmic socket syndrome (DASS), using standardized tools from daily practice. 62 anophthalmic sockets were compared with their healthy fellow eye using the Standard Patient Evaluation of Eye Dryness (SPEED) score. The correlations between SPEED questionnaire and the prosthesis care, discharge characteristics score, conjunctival inflammation score, meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD) scores and Schirmer I test were studied. The anophthalmic sockets group achieved a higher SPEED test score (p < 0.01), discharge score (p < 0.01), conjunctival inflammation score (p < 0.01), MGD scores (p < 0.01) and lower Schirmer I test (p < 0.01) compared with their fellow, healthy eye. Patients with a prosthesis replacement of one year or less, those with a current fit time of one year or less and those with a cleaning frequency above one month reported better SPEED, (p < 0.01), conjunctiva inflammation (p < 0.01) and MGD scores (p < 0.01). Most anophthalmic patients suffer mild to severe DASS, which seems related to discharge, conjunctival inflammation and MGD. Moreover, certain practices related to the care of the prosthesis such as replacing with a frequency lower than yearly, current fitting time inferior to one year and a removing and cleaning regime above one month, were related to a lower discomfort sensation, conjunctival inflammation and MGD. In the 1920s, Mary Maddox opened a vision rehabilitation center in London, being considered the first orthoptist (an unknown profession in Spain, whose competences fall on Optics‐Optometry). Her father, Ernest E. Maddox, an ophthalmologist, had developed various instruments to investigate binocular vision. The new discipline seeks to improve the binocular state of the patient, affected by symptomatic tropias or phorias, through exercises that train eye movements, ductions, versions, vergences, fixations and saccades. Amblyopia, on the other hand, is still treated by occlusion of the fellow eye, following practices that began in the 18th century (George L. de Buffon). During the 20th century, orthoptic specialists used different instruments, which have survived to this day, for the diagnosis and treatment of deviations. Perhaps the most advanced of them is the synoptophore, capable of determining objective and subjective deviations, the presence of normal or abnormal correspondences, and the presence of suppression scotoma. The synoptophore is also used in rehabilitation, together with the aperture rule, vectograms or the Brock string. However, in the case of tropias and during the 20th century, orthoptic therapy occupies a very marginal place compared to the surgical solution. The Hubel and Wiesel experiments in the 60s and 70s were interpreted restrictively, rooting concepts such as the so‐called critical period, which discouraged any attempt to treat amblyopia beyond occlusion, particularly in adulthood. However, research carried out from the second half of the 20th century to nowadays provides evidence of the usefulness of vision rehabilitation in the treatment of strabismus and non‐strabismus visual dysfunctions, and in the recovery of amblyopia in adulthood. Basic research led by Dennis M. Levi of the University of California at Berkeley and Robert F. Hess of McGill University, as well as clinical research by the Paediatric Eye Disease Investigator Group, PEDIG, are good examples. New technologies based on computers are currently renewing and revitalizing orthoptic practice, both in diagnosis and treatment. Eye‐trackers combined or not with Virtual Reality allow (a) to record eye movements accurately and objectively, and to identify visual behaviour and deficits, and (b) to train those movements, providing positive feedback to the patient. Screens have evolved from conventional models, later 3D and finally Virtual Reality, allowing dynamic exercises and avoiding other limitations, such as postural ones. Software algorithms adapt the difficulty of the exercises to patient's performance, record therapy compliance, and store the results in the cloud for remote control of home therapy. In addition, gamification techniques allow increasing the patient's motivation and adherence to treatment.
