Researchers at the National Institute of Oceanography and Fisheries in Alexandria, Egypt have developed a new class of antimicrobial agents called (4-arylazo-3-methyl-2-thienyl) 4-antipyrine ketones. These compounds were found to have broad-spectrum antibacterial activity against both Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacterial strains. One specific compound, (3-methyl-5-(phenylamino)-4-(4-tolylazo)-2-thienyl) 4-antipyrine ketone, showed superior activity compared to Ciprofloxacin against certain test strains.
