Research has been conducted on the sclerophytin A. The bicyclic analogues of the sclerophytin's original structure and the synthesis of 3-pyranones have been investigated and are discussed.

Research has been conducted on the carbocyclic nucleosides. The synthetic route to these nucleosides has been developed and the results indicate that the targeted nucleosides' stereochemistry has been obtained via the use of Grubbs cyclization and Trost allylic alkylation from D-lactose.

Research has been conducted on the reaction of 3-phenylbutyraldehyde or 3-phenylpropionaldehyde with P450 (sub) BM3 -F87G carried out in the presence of hydrogen peroxide. The putative isoporphyrin intermediate produced by this reaction has been investigated via the use of the electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy and the details are reported.

Research has been conducted on protected alpha-alkyl amino glycines (A3G). The method allowing the access to these glycines from the precursor alpha-isopropylthioglycine has been developed and is described.

The effect of the N-alkylation on the complexes' properties has been explored via the use of the density functional theory calculations and the results indicate that the difference between complexes' properties can be accounted by solvation as a result of the N-alkylation of these ligands.

Research has been conducted on the 3- and 3,4-bis(2-cyanoethylsulfanyl)thiophenes. Results indicate that these compounds can be prepared on a one-pot reaction and can be deprotected under mild conditions.

N-ethylmaleimide (NEM) modification of a lactose permease mutant containing a single-Cys in place of Ala-122 (helix IV) abolishes active lactose transport. Moreover, lactose, melibiose, and [beta],D-galactopyranosyl 1-thio-[beta],D-galactopyranoside protect against NEM inactivation of lactose transport and/or alkylation of Cys-122 by [[sup.14]C]NEM. Remarkably, however, D-galactose transport is relatively unaffected by NEM, and the monosaccharide affords no protection against NEM inactivation of lactose transport. Consistently, competitive inhibition of [[sup.14]C]galactose transport by lactose, melibiose, or [beta],D-galactopyranosyl 1-thio-[beta],D-galactopyranoside is drastically reduced after NEM modification, whereas inhibition by unlabeled galactose is unaffected. The results indicate that alkylation of Cys-122 selectively inhibits binding and transport of disaccharides, whereas transport of the monosaccharide galactose remains largely unaffected. In addition, although the conservative mutation Ala-122 [right arrow] Ser causes only mild inhibition of lactose transport, the mutations Ala-122 [right arrow] Phe and Ala-122 [right arrow] Tyr lead to marked inhibition. In contradistinction, none of these replacements has a marked effect on galactose transport. The results demonstrate that Ala-122 is a component of the ligand-binding site and provide a strong indication that the side chain at position 122 abuts on the nongalactosyl moiety of D-galactopyranosides. This is in contrast to Cys-148, a neighboring residue in helix V, that interacts with the hydrophobic face of the galactosyl moiety of D-galactopyranosides.

Research has been conducted on the alpha,omega-dihaloalkenes. The evaluation of these dihaloalkenes as alkylating agents yielding resin-bound racemic intermediates has been carried out and the results are reported.

Research has been conducted on the racemic branched carbonates. The results of the catalytic asymmetric alkylation reactions of these carbonates with sodium dimethyl malonate carried out in such solvents as toluene, tetrahydrofuran and tetrahydropyran are discussed.

The hydride donor reactivities of these hydrocarbons have been investigated via benzhydryl cations used as reference electrophiles and the results indicate that the hydride transfer processes' second-rate constants are independent of the solvents.

Research has been conducted on the N-alkylated 2-azanorbornenone derivatives. Results indicate that the domino metathesis of these derivatives allow for the enantioselective synthesis of pyrrolizidine, quinolizidine, pyrrolidinoazepine and pyrrolidinoazocine derivatives.

Research has been conducted on regioselective alkylation of allylic compounds. The results of the palladium-catalyzed alpha-alkylation of allylic bromides and chloride with unsubstituted and substituted benzylic Grignard reagents are reported.

Research has been conducted on the exocyclic adduct 8-(hydroxymethyl)-3,N (super)4 -etheno-C produced by the reaction of dC with glycidaldehyde. The mutagenic potential of this adduct has been investigated in an oligonucleotide via the use of the mammalian DNA polymerases and the results are presented.

Research has been conducted on the (+)-brefeldin A, a macrolide fungal metabolite. The synthesis of this metabolite has been carried out via different methods including intramolecular ester enolate alkylation and nitra- and intermolecular nitrile oxide cycloaddition and the results are reported.

Research has been conducted on the manganese(II) tetraphenylporphyrin, an antimalarial drug with a heme model. The reactivity of the trioxane molecules related structurally to this drug has been tested and the results indicate that alkylation is the pharmacological activity factor of this drug.

Research has been conducted on the vicarious nucleophilic substitution-alkylation reaction. Results indicate that this reaction offers a route to the alpha-substituted nitrobenzyl phosphine oxides, sulfones and esters via the three-component coupling reaction and that vicarious nucleophilic substitution-alkylation protocol can be applied to the Indoprofen derivative synthesis.

Research has been conducted on the functionalized thiophenes, the precursors of the natural products. The approach to the 3-(N-alkyl)- and 3-(N-aryl)-aminothiophene production has been developed and the application of the Watanabe's reaction conditions to the bromothiophene alkylamination is described.
