This article provides information on the European Association of Information Services (EUSIDIC) conference, dubbed Content Ownership Versus Platform Ownership Or The Platform Battle, which was held in Helsinki, Finland in October 2004. Participants in the event included information producers and consultants, as well as information professionals from the corporate, academic, and government sectors. Welcoming the attendees, EUSIDIC chairman Johan van Halm defined the battle plan, which was how users can get to information without changing platforms. The opening address by Kai Ekholm, director of the National Library of Finland, focused on the complexities that modern information professionals face. This article provides information on the 2004 annual meeting of the American Society for Information Science and Technology (ASIST) in Providence, Rhode Island. The conference presented sessions organized into seven major topics, such as disciplinary issues, digital libraries, user behavior, system design, information organization, knowledge management and use, and resources and services. More than 400 authors and speakers presented contributions to the conference. And what was particularly significant about this year's event is that more than 25 countries outside the U.S. was represented. There were 66 sessions held this year. One noteworthy change was a significant expanded series of poster exhibits, with nearly four times the usual number of posters distributed over three sessions. J. C. Herz, principal of Joystick Nation Inc., spoke of knowledge management being the cult of documents. Herz said that posting a white paper without offering rewards for doing so is one of the fundamental failures of knowledge management. Meanwhile, speakers Jenny Fry and Sanna Talja argued that it is erroneous to use the physical science communication model as the gold standard, thereby treating the applied sciences, social sciences, and the humanities as second cousins who will catch up to the standard given enough time.

This article reports that the Association of Records Managers and Administrators' (ARMA) was able to increase the number of attendees to their 20th annual Toronto Chapter Educational Seminar by 64 percent over 1991. When the number of people signing up for the seminar dropped in 1991 to 140, the ARMA executives knew that they had to do something to attract interest and to encourage members to commit the time and the money to attend in 1992. The organization decided to organize the seminar into five tracks or themes--basic, technologies, managing, industry specific, and progressive records management. Attendees could choose to focus on one track, or to mix themes according to their interests. It was however, the first time that the ARMA chapter had offered a certificate for completion of the basic program which covered such topics as information gathering techniques, micrographics and marketing to senior management.

On September 14, 2009, the Compact of OpenAccess Publishing Equity featured five of the premier higher education institutions in the U.S. and jointly made a commitment for OA publishing. The article presents information about the 54th Annual Meeting of the American Society for Information Science (ASIS), which was convened in Washington D.C. in October 1991. The ASIS program offered sessions on every segment of the information industry. The diversity of the program can probably be explained by the diversity of the ASIS membership. ASIS 4,000 members range from information systems developers, online professional and information resource managers to librarians and record managers. Along with a full program of contributed papers, the meeting offered plenary sessions, special sessions, workshops, special interest group sessions and a small but lively exhibit. This paper presents an update on partnerships in the information services field as of February 2005. Swets Information Services has partnered with INIST, the Institute of Scientific and Technical Information of CNRS, the French integrated scientific documentation center. The document delivery services of INIST will be integrated into SwetsWide, the Swets online service for the procurement, access and management of subscriptions and online information. The Special Libraries Association (SLA) and Elsevier has partnered to develop the SLA Online University professional development platform. Elsevier contributed a one-time gift of $60,000 to start up the effort; the gift was matched by SLA funding. SLA Online University is scheduled to appear on the web in late May 2005. It is expected to include more than 200 courses, as well as additional professional development resources. EOS International and WebFeat announced a partnership to supply EOS clients with simplified, simultaneous access to multiple database resources. The National Ground Water Association (NGWA) announced that Blackwell Publishing will handle the production, technical editing and publishing of the association's journals, Ground Water and Ground Water Monitoring and Remediation. NGWA will retain control of the publications.

An interview with Tracey L. Armstrong, president and chief executive officer (CEO) of Copyright Clearance Center (CCC), is presented. In his opinion, the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development's resolution that all publicly funded research should be freely available is full of logical flaws and second-rate research. He also expressed his views on peer review of research and payment issues in published research.

The article presents an interview with Bob Bovenschulte, president of the publishing division of the American Chemical Society ACS. According to Bovenschulte, the scope of the publications program of the society encompasses the chemical science broadly define, which means including areas of research inquiry at the interface with other disciplines. With regards to copyright issues, he believes that ACS does not have any difficulty in that area since they do not require copyright assignment. This article presents some highlights of the World Library and Information Congress: 70th International Federation of Library Association General Conference and Council held in Buenos Aires, Argentina, on August 22-27, 2004. With nearly 4,000 participants from 121 countries, the event was the first World Library Information Congress to take place in South America, and over 1,500 Spanish-speaking people registered. Employing the theme Libraries: Tools for Education and Development, the Argentine organizers set the goal of promoting the use of libraries and librarians in South America. Moreover, they wished to acknowledge the need for libraries to support education in Latin America in order to promote economic and social development. The organizing committee worked for 6 years through Argentina's severe economic crisis to produce an interesting and thoroughly enjoyable conference. The opening session offered greetings and speeches from several important government officials. The themes of globalization and politics were central to the conference. Information literacy was by far the most popular concept at the conference. Presenters at various sessions discussed information literacy programs and research in different countries.
