Abstract

The article presents information about the 54th Annual Meeting of the American Society for Information Science (ASIS), which was convened in Washington D.C. in October 1991. The ASIS program offered sessions on every segment of the information industry. The diversity of the program can probably be explained by the diversity of the ASIS membership. ASIS 4,000 members range from information systems developers, online professional and information resource managers to librarians and record managers. Along with a full program of contributed papers, the meeting offered plenary sessions, special sessions, workshops, special interest group sessions and a small but lively exhibit. The exhibit itself was as diversified as the program, an interesting mix of book publishers, CD-ROM products, online systems vendors, library automation systems, document delivery services and electronic journals. The session "Information Science Before 1945," supplied attendees with more insight into the history of the information industry than can be found at the Smithsonian's "Information Age" exhibit.
