The New York City Coordinating Committee of Welfare Groups, which mainly represents mothers and children, has just announced a major campaign to recruit poorly paid male workers and their families onto the relief rolls to obtain substantial wage supplements. If the campaign succeeds, it could spread to other cities, providing the basis for a political alliance between the working and non- working poor. Such a coalition of poor people would be a defense against the mounting attacks on the welfare system, attacks spearheaded by better-paid segments of the working and middle class.
