For up to 16 hours a day, artist Deborah Claxton, armed with several pairs of curved manicure scissors, a magnifying light, X-Acto knives and tweezers, cuts and assembles such bits of velvety paper in various sizes and colors on boards to create collage-like compositions. Claxton, who has created about 50 cut-paper pieces, is one of a few artists who use the cut-paper technique on a large scale. As she grew, Claxton developed an interest in ceramics and sculpture, which only sparked a greater desire to explore other art forms.

After almost 30 years of painting breathtaking Western landscapes, measuring up to 96 inches in scale, nationally acclaimed artist Wilson Hurley knew a few things about working large. In everything else he'd done like graduating from West Point, Hying air-and-sea rescues at the end of World War I, operating as a forward air controller in Vietnam, earning a law degree and practicing law and co-founding an Albuquerque bank, he relied on knowledge gained from methodical study and the conscientious application of that knowledge. Later, Hurley would invite critiques from renowned painters, including Theodore Van Solen, Jozef Bakos and Robert Lougheed. Hurley eventually proved he was, with works in museums and collections around the country and more than eight years devoted to monumental paintings at the Cowboy Hall of Fame and the Oklahoma state capitol building.

It was just about three years ago, in 2001, that the young artist Jeremy Lipking entered a few of his canvases in the California Art Club's Spring Salon.
