Abstract

The article focuses on painters Arthur and Lucia Mathews. At the turn of the 20th century, the Mathews have created a new form of movement which is the California Decorative Style. It is a celebration of classical forms of beauty set in north California. They are classically trained painters with a modern approach, and embraced the idea of "art for art's sake." Arthur's works can be seen in public buildings in San Francisco. Works of the couple, such as the interior design of the Masonic Temple, are also discussed.
