Abstract

The article presents information on American painter Alex Katz. Katz had come of age as an artist in the era dominated by the New York School, and while he rejected abstraction in favor of realism he nonetheless adopted the mural-size scale of the Abstract Expressionists for his own representational paintings. Katz also departed from the hieratic aesthetic of the New York School in respect to his preferred subject matter. Still another of Katz's distinctive achievements consists of the small-scale figurative collages he created in the 1950s.
