Abstract
- The article provides an overview of the life and works of artist George Catlin. He was born in 1796 in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania and trained in the law and practiced his profession with little enthusiasm. Between 1832 and 1836, he made four excursions into Indian country that resulted in some 170 paintings, among them many of his finest. Catlin painted women as well as men, modeling faces with fluent strokes.
