This article offers a look at campus-only marketing of information products and services. One of the ways an information product must prove its worth is to have a life after, to constitute a real world product. When students go for job interviews and the interviewers ask them what skills they might bring, commenting on their ability to search effectively online would have more impact of the databases they name are ones the interviewers have heard of or might wish they had heard of. Vendors who offer no off-campus routes to their information seem to contradict any claims for their data's importance. If the information is so good, so vital, so essential, so deserving of the academic librarians' attention and expenditure, then it should be good enough for a post-graduation afterlife. Bottom line, academic databases are curricular tools. No one expects term papers or other curricular exercises to provide precedent-shattering original research. For undergraduate programs, academic librarians want the databases they license to teach students how to search well, how to evaluate content, how to know when to reach beyond the open Web and when to stay within it, in essence, how all kinds of information can serve them in their future lives.

UC representatives began conceptualizing a plan to harness the system's resources at a time when the budget was very bad and the possibilities of technology seamed endless. The mission of the California Digital Library is to provide a centralized framework to efficiently share materials held by UC, offer greater and easier access to digital content and join with researchers in developing new tools and innovations for scholarly communication. The eScholarship Repository, a project of the eScholarship initiative project, offers faculty a central location for depositing any research or scholarly output deemed appropriate by their participating UC research unit. This article describes a microcomputer laboratory implementation project at a small college library in the U.S. The library established its public access microcomputer laboratory in 1988 by purchasing four used Texas Instrument Professional Microcomputers from the college's Academic Computing Center at a very good price. Right from the beginning, the library had made a deliberate decision to keep this project as simple as possible, and word processing would be the only function provided by this laboratory and assistance would not be offered beyond showing users how to turn on equipment or change printer paper. However, librarians soon found out that the majority of users regardless of their level of microcomputer backgrounds, needed additional assistance at some point.
