The backscatter X-ray system makes an image by detecting scattered particles from an object in the opposite direction by Compton scattering. This system has the advantage of detecting drugs or explosives composed of organic substances. In this study, we developed a backscatter X-ray detection system. The 6-ch DAQ system is able to store acquired data for 50 μs as 8 bytes and the 6-ch high voltage power supply board provides adjustable power from 0 to 1600 V. Using this detection system, we varied the tube voltage from 80 to 160 kV and observed backscatter X-ray images of two plastic phantoms at 160 kV. The results indicate a need to optimize the speed of the collimator and data acquisition time of the DAQ system to improve image quality. Gotthard-II (G-II) is a 1-D silicon microstrip hybrid detector developed by the Paul Scherrer Institut within the framework of a collaboration agreement with the European XFEL. The ASIC features a dynamic gain switching architecture, in order to cope with the luminosity of European XFEL, and a 12-bit analog-to-digital converter with a sampling/conversion rate of more than 18 MS/s as well as a Static random-access memory, making it capable of matching the European XFEL pulse train structure, thus acquiring up to 2700 images at 4.5 MHz per burst. The sensor's strip pitch can be either of 50 μ m or 25 μ m , for a total of 1280 or 2560 output channels per detector, respectively, with a spectral sensitivity that allows either X-ray detection (optimized in the 5–20 keV range) or visible light detection. Its exceptionally good compliance with the European XFEL beam conditions will make G-II the most widely employed detector across the facility, with a total of 29 modules of different flavors that will be installed in scientific instruments and beam diagnostic setups. Although the detector will be predominantly used for spectroscopic measurements it will have a variety of other applications, including X-ray diffraction/emission/absorption experiments, relative pulse arrival time monitoring (of fundamental importance for pump–probe experiments), spectral diagnostics, and beam quality monitoring, with the possibility for the detector itself to generate a veto patterns for the large area MHz framerate pixel detectors employed at the scientific instruments, such as AGIPD, LPD and DSSC. In this paper, an overview of G-II detector technology and its usage at the European XFEL will be presented; the focus will then move on towards the process of detector integration in the European XFEL control system, data acquisition, and data correction infrastructure, highlighting its challenges. X-ray free-electron lasers (XFEL) provide unique opportunities for hard X-ray emission spectroscopy (XES) in solution phase by enabling femtosecond temporal resolution. The high brilliance and MHz repetition rate of such sources drive the development of specialized sample delivery systems to overcome the challenges of sample degradation, as well as major advances of multiple-gain detectors to fully utilize the high dynamic range required for X-ray detection. This paper addresses the experimental limitations that arise in a typical XES experiment performed on fast liquid jets at the MHz repetition rate of the European XFEL. Using a low-noise gain-switching JUNGFRAU detector allows taking advantage of the high dynamic range and high sensitivity, but restricts a single-shot detection due to the limited frame rate. The gain transition regions of the detector response may exhibit nonlinear behavior that can be identified and efficiently corrected using the internal reference-based normalization and linearization approaches described here. 4H-SiC Schottky photodiodes, with 25 μ m epitaxial layers, employing thin (20 nm) Ni 2 Si Schottky contacts, were investigated for high temperature photon counting X-ray spectroscopy. Important X-ray photodiode detector parameters were extracted from electrical characterization within the temperature range 160 °C to 0 °C. The devices were found to be fully depleted at an applied electric field of 20 kV/cm; a leakage current density of 33 nA cm -2 ± 1 nA cm−2 at 160 °C, was measured for one of the devices. The detectors were subsequently connected to low-noise photon counting readout electronics and investigated for their spectral performance at temperatures up to 100 °C. With the charge-sensitive preamplifier operated at the same temperature as the detector the best energy resolution (Full Width at Half Maximum at 5.9 keV) obtained decreased from 2.20 keV ± 0.04 keV (120 e − rms ± 2 e − rms) at 100 ∘ C to 1.20 keV ± 0.03 keV (65 e - rms ± 2 e − rms) at 0 ∘ C. The dominant source of noise broadening the 55Fe X-ray photopeak was found to be the dielectric noise, except for the spectra accumulated at 100 °C and long shaping times (> 6 μ s), in those case the main source of photopeak broadening was the white parallel noise. State-of-the art X-ray imaging cameras using silicon sensors for X-ray detection have demonstrated a frame-rate of 10 MHz and excellent performance for X-ray energies below 20 keV. We proposed a pixelated ultrafast inorganic scintillator-based front imager for GHz hard X-ray imaging. The proposed imager is featured with a total absorption for hard X-ray photons, and provides sub-ns scintillation pulse width crucial for X-ray bunches of a few ns spacing foreseen at the proposed MaRIE facility. We measured temporal response of a dozen ultrafast and fast inorganic scintillators at the 10-ID-B site of the Advanced Photon Source (APS) of ANL. Crystal's response to hybrid X-ray beam of 30 keV, consisting of singlet bunches of 50 ps width and septuplet bunches of 27 ps width with 2.83 ns bunch spacing, was measured. Ultrafast inorganic scintillators, such as BaF 2 :Y and ZnO:Ga, show clearly resolved X-ray bunches for septuplets, as well as no degradation of amplitude for continuous eight septuplets, providing a proof of principle for the ultrafast inorganic scintillator-based total absorption front imager for the proposed MaRIE project. Abstract In this paper, a focused detection system for X-ray pulsar-based Navigation (XNAV) is designed based on Silicon Drift Detector (SDD). The detector electronics mainly adopts the digital trapezoidal shaping method to measure the Times-Of-Arrival (TOAs) and energy of photons. The time measurement accuracy is better than 500ns. The energy resolution is 191eV at 8.05keV, and the maximum count rate is 500kcps between 1 and 12keV. In the semi-physical simulation experiment, the filtering of noise photons by energy discrimination significantly improves the correlation degree between the cumulative pulse profile and the standard profile. Abstract High Energy Photon Source (HEPS) with a beam energy of 6 GeV and emittance less than 1.0 nm rad will be constructed in China, which can provide high-brightness hard X-ray in the order of 1022 (phs/s/mm2/mr2/0.1%B.W.). The broadband and high-brightness monochromatic beam flux and white beam flux need new detector other than the ion chambers for measurement in case of saturation under high-flux conditions. The Diamond X-ray detector for the beam position monitoring and high brightness X-ray detection is developing for High Energy Photon Source in China. The diamond detector has advantages over other detector materials: a low atomic number resulting in a low absorption cross-section when used as beam position monitor and a high radiation and wide linear range when used as beam intensity measuring. In this paper, the polycrystalline chemical-vapour-deposition diamond detectors with an aluminium contact have been tested at 1W2B beamline at Beijing Synchrotron Radiation Facility (BSRF). Abstract An ideal readout circuit would detect X-ray beam with full spectral information and Fano-limited precision and would deal with high count rates, limited only by charge transport within the detector. Unfortunately in a real readout IC in particular the performance in speed and noise are conflicting requirements. In this review the speed–noise trade-off is discussed, referring to the recent ICs for hybrid detectors: those with best results in the energy resolution and those with the highest counting rates. Abstract Standard methods used for establishing EDX Si(Li) detectors response functions (DRF) are tedious and require a significant amount of work and beam time, which is not always available. That fact frequently leads to the disregard of the specific DRF at the time of the measurement, and to the fit of spectra using "general" response functions, which were determined on detectors with different characteristics. The accurate description of the low energy side asymmetry of the peaks is necessary to quantify trace elements accurately and to determine fundamental parameters like X-ray intensity ratios and ionization cross sections. In the present work, a simple method to monitor the energy dependence of EDX detectors response function in the 5 keV to 15 keV range is presented. Four PIXE generated X-ray spectra of thin mono-elemental (Ti, Fe, Ni, and Au) films are shown to be enough for this purpose. Abstract Laser induced transient current technique (LI-TCT) was proven to be a successful tool for measuring at the same time carrier lifetime, carrier mobility, and electric field distribution in X- and gamma ray detectors with plain contacts on opposite surfaces. Unfortunately, the most performing detectors exploit more complicated contact geometries that, hindering hole contribution to signal formation, allow a much better spectroscopy. In this paper, a LI-TCT based method is presented, for the determination of transport parameters as well as electric field distribution directly in single carrier devices. In recent years, scientific CMOS (sCMOS) sensors have been vigorously developed and have outperformed CCDs in several aspects: higher readout frame rate, higher radiation tolerance, and higher working temperature. For silicon image sensors, image lag will occur when the charges of an event are not fully transferred inside pixels. It can degrade the image quality for optical imaging, and deteriorate the energy resolution for X-ray spectroscopy. In this work, the image lag of a sCMOS sensor is studied. To measure the image lag under low-light illumination, we constructed a new method to extract the image lag from X-ray photons. The image lag of a customized X-ray sCMOS sensor GSENSE1516BSI is measured, and its influence on X-ray performance is evaluated. The result shows that the image lag of this sensor exists only in the immediately subsequent frame and is always less than 0.05% for different incident photon energies and under different experimental conditions. The residual charge is smaller than 0. 5 e − with the highest incident photon charge around 8 ke − . Compared to the readout noise level around 3 e − , the image lag of this sensor is too small to have a significant impact on the imaging quality and the energy resolution. The image lag shows a positive correlation with the incident photon energy and a negative correlation with the temperature. However, it has no dependence on the gain setting and the integration time. These relations can be explained qualitatively by the non-ideal potential structure inside the pixels. This method can also be applied to the study of image lag for other kinds of imaging sensors. Gaseous polarimetry applies in soft X-ray polarization detection, typically like the Gas Pixel detector (GPD) and the micropattern time projection chamber (TPC). The polarization phase angles resolve from photoelectron track trajectories for both of them. The photoelectron track images derived from read-out pixels or strips are the key to determining the performance of the polarimetry. Gaseous X-ray polarimetry is regularly optimized and diagnosed by the Geant4 associated with Garfield++ and finite element analysis software (full simulation). Although the results are more realistic by the full simulation, the sample generation is low efficiency, especially for large gain values of the multiplier stage. The 2-D photoelectron track images regularly generate by a gaussian smear of initial ionization electrons at present. However, discrepancies exist in the modulation curves, resulting in fuzzy diagnoses and optimization of polarimetry. In this study, a fast simulation framework is constructed, the reconstruction of polarization phase angles and energy spectrum of the samples obtained from the fast simulation are consistent with those from experiments and the full simulation, and the deviation of modulation factor is within 2% for both situations of the GPD and TPC. In addition, the fast simulation greatly improves the sample generation efficiency. These results illustrate the fast simulation model is relative accuracy and high efficiency, which provides a useful tool for gaseous X-ray polarimetry. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Semiconductor sensors based on the rad-optic effect enable ultra-fast detection of X-rays and play an important role in fusion diagnostics. Obtaining the responsivity of the semiconductor ultrafast response material is an important part of characterization. In this work, the refractive index change mechanism of the semiconductor under X-ray irradiation was analyzed, and the quantitative relationship between the diffraction efficiency and the X-ray photon energy was established through the LT-AlGaAs diffraction imaging experiments. The impulse responses of LT-AlGaAs under 1 keV–10 keV X-ray radiation were calculated, revealing the variation of responsivity with radiated photon energy. Imaging experiments of LT-AlGaAs were performed by bombarding an Al target to generate 1.5 keV X-rays. The diffraction images were obtained in agreement with the simulations. The responsivity of the semiconductor chip increases with the square of the incident X-ray power density. This study provides meaningful analyses for the development of ultra-fast X-ray imaging systems based on the rad-optic effect. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this paper, we present a multi-voltage threshold (MVT) digitizer using a time-varied threshold and investigate the feasibility of using this digitizer to develop the data acquisition system for photon-counting X-ray security inspection imaging. This digitizer compares the scintillation pulse with a preset time-varied voltage signal and records the time information of the intersections. As the amplitude of the threshold varies as a function of time, the voltage values of the intersections could be calculated using the recorded time, and the energy information could be extracted via the acquired time–voltage samples. Unlike the constant voltage thresholds MVT digitizer requiring multiple voltage comparators, this method needs only one voltage comparator, which notably reduces the complexity in configuration. We demonstrate the development of such an MVT digitizer using a sine signal threshold and evaluate its energy performance with a yttrium orthosilicate (YSO) scintillator and Silicon Photomultiplier (SiPM) detector (designed for X-ray detection). The digitizer obtains energy resolutions of 41.4%, 26.6%, and 25.5% at 30, 59.5, and 80.9 keV, respectively. For comparison, the YSO/SiPM detector is also evaluated with a high-speed oscilloscope, and measured energy resolutions are 40.6%, 26.5%, and 25.1% at 30, 59.5, and 80.9 keV, respectively. These results indicate that the proposed MVT digitizer using a time-varied threshold is a promising method for developing a YSO/SiPM-based photon-counting X-ray detector. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this article, we present the first X-ray calibration performed over the 0.1–1.5 keV spectral range by means of a soft X-ray Manson source and the monochromator SYMPAX. This monochromator, based on a classical Rowland geometry, presents the novelty to be able to board simultaneously two detectors and move them under vacuum in front of the exit slit of the monochromatizing stage. This provides the great advantage to perform radiometric measurements of the monochromatic X-ray photon flux with one reference detector while calibrating another X-ray detector. To achieve this, at least one secondary standard must be operated with SYMPAX. This paper presents thereby an efficiency transfer experiment between a secondary standard silicon drift detector (SDD), previously calibrated on BESSY II synchrotron Facility, and another one (“unknown” SDD), devoted to be used permanently with SYMPAX. The associated calibration process is described as well as corresponding results. Comparison with calibrated measurements performed at the Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB) Radiometric Laboratory shows a very good agreement between the secondary standard and the unknown SDD. We developed a new scintillation timing detector using a proportional-mode silicon avalanche photodiode (Si-APD) for synchrotron radiation nuclear resonant scattering. We report on the nuclear forward scattering measurement on 61 Ni with a prototype detector using a lead-loaded plastic scintillator (EJ-256, 3 mm in diameter and 2 mm in thickness), mounted on a proportional-mode Si-APD. Using synchrotron X-rays of 67.41 keV, we successfully measured the time spectra of nuclear forward scattering on 61 Ni enriched metal foil and 61 Ni 86 V 14 alloy. The electrical characteristics of the Ni/Cd 1 − x Zn x Te/In structures with a metal–semiconductor rectifying contact are investigated. The diodes, fabricated on the base of In-doped n -type Cd 1 − x Zn x Te (CZT) crystals with resistivity of ∼ 10 10 Ω ⋅ cm, have low leakage current and can be used as X/ γ -ray detectors. The rectifying contact was obtained by vacuum deposition of Ni on the semiconductor surface pretreated with argon plasma. The high barrier rectifying contact allowed us to increase applied reverse bias voltage up to 2500 V at the CZT crystal thickness of 1 mm. Dark (leakage) currents of the diodes with the rectifying contact area of 4 mm 2 did not exceed 3–5 nA at bias voltage of 2000 V and room temperature. The charge transport mechanisms in the Ni/CZT/In structures have been interpreted as generation–recombination in the space charge region within the range of reverse bias of 5–100 V and as currents limited by space charge at both forward and reverse bias at V >100 V. Two commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) 4H-SiC UV photodiodes have been investigated for their suitability as low-cost high temperature tolerant X-ray detectors. Electrical characterisation of the photodiodes which had different active areas (0.06 mm 2 and 0.5 mm 2 ) is reported over the temperature range 0 °C to 140 °C together with measurements of the X-ray photocurrents generated when the detectors were illuminated with an 55 Fe radioisotope X-ray source. The 0.06 mm 2 photodiode was also investigated as a photon counting spectroscopic X-ray detector across the temperature range 0 °C to 100 °C. The depletion widths (at 120 V reverse bias) of the two diodes were found to be 2.3 µm and 4.5 µm, for the 0.06 mm 2 and 0.5 mm 2 detectors respectively, at 140 °C. Both devices had low leakage currents (<10 pA) at temperatures ≤40 °C even at high electric field strengths (500 kV/cm for 0.06 mm 2 diode; 267 kV/cm for 0.5 mm 2 diode). At 140 °C and similar field strengths (514 kV/cm for 0.06 mm 2 diode; 269 kV/cm for 0.5 mm 2 diode), the leakage currents of both diodes were <2 nA (corresponding to leakage current densities of 2.4 µA/cm 2 and 0.3 µA/cm 2 for each diode respectively). The results demonstrated that both devices could function as current mode detectors of soft X-rays at the temperatures <80 °C and that when coupled to a low noise charge sensitive preamplifier, the smaller diode functioned as a photon counting spectroscopic X-ray detector at temperatures ≤100 °C with modest energy resolution (1.6 keV FWHM at 5.9 keV at 0 °C; 2.6 keV FWHM at 5.9 keV at 100 °C). Due to their temperature tolerance, wide commercial availability, and the radiation hardness of SiC, such detectors are expected to find utility in future low-cost nanosatellite (cubesat) missions and cost-sensitive industrial applications. In past years efforts have concentrated on the development of arrays of Silicon Drift Detectors for X-ray spectroscopy. This is in stark contrast to the little effort that has been devoted to the improvement of germanium detectors, in particular for synchrotron applications. Germanium detectors have better energy resolution and are more efficient in detecting high energy photons than silicon detectors. In this context, the detector consortium of the European project LEAPS-INNOV has set an ambitious R&D program devoted to the development of a new generation of multi-element monolithic germanium detectors for X-ray detection. In order to improve the performance of the detector under development, simulations of the different detector design options have been performed. In this contribution, the efforts in terms of R&D are outlined with a focus on the modelization of the detector geometry and first performance results. These performance results show that a signal-to-background ratio larger than 1000 can be achieved in the energy range of interest from 5 keV to 100 keV. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The study of Soft X-ray emission can be a source of fundamental information, particularly for what concerns tokamaks and plasma diagnostics, but also in general in the fields of high energy and nuclear physics. Detection systems based on Gas Electron Multipliers (GEM) technology can be of particular use in the context of X-ray analyses, being relatively low cost while maintaining good spatial and temporal resolution and capability to sustain high counting rates (up to MHz/mm2). The development of these new and improved detectors is thus of interest, especially in the research about diagnostic and control of machines for fusion energy. In this work, the performance of a new triple-GEM detector, characterized by an aluminum metallic coating on both layers of the GEM foils, is presented and a comparison is made with the more conventional design employing copper coating. The performances of an aluminum-coated GEM (Al-GEM) detector and of a standard copper-coated GEM (Cu-GEM) detector in revealing quasi-monochromatic X-ray beams coming from different fluorescence materials are compared. The Al-GEM detector is shown to less suffer the issue of unwanted background on the signal caused by the presence of copper inside the detector itself. The suppression of this noise source encourages the use of Al-GEM detectors to perform spectroscopy in harsh environments, such as tokamak machines, where soft X-rays are useful probes to control different plasma properties and parameters. There is a great demand to develop non-destructive techniques to identify and quantify Special Nuclear Materials (SNM) in homeland security and nuclear safeguards applications. Passive assay could be extremely challenging in some scenarios. Active interrogation technique based on photofission has been identified as one of the promising approaches. In radiation detection system design based on such technique, it is highly desired to have abilities to accurately and efficiently simulate delayed γ-rays emitted from photofission reactions. In this work, simulation results were compared with measurement outcomes to demonstrate the capabilities and limitations of the code MCNPX 2.7.0 in the simulation of delayed γ-rays from photofission of uranium and plutonium samples. First, high-energy delayed γ-rays (E γ ~2.7–4.5 MeV) from photofission of 238 U were simulated and validated against the energy spectra measured in between linac pulses. Second, low-energy delayed γ-ray spectra (E γ ~0.6–2.7 MeV) measured with a list-mode system after irradiation of 239 Pu were used in the validation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Five SiC Schottky photodiodes for X-ray detection have been electrically characterized at room temperature. One representative diode was also electrically characterized over the temperature range 20°C to 140 °C. The performance at 30 °C of all five X-ray detectors, in both current mode and for photon counting X-ray spectroscopy was investigated. The diodes were fabricated in an array form such that they could be operated as either a 2×2 or 1×3 pixel array. Although the devices showed double barrier heights, high ideality factors and higher than expected leakage current at room temperature (12 nA/cm 2 at an internal electric field of 105 kV/cm), they operated as spectroscopic photon counting soft X-ray detectors uncooled at 30 °C. Accurate and reliable energy calibration of spectral x-ray detectors used in medical imaging is essential for avoiding ring artifacts in the reconstructed images (computed tomography) and for performing accurate material basis decomposition. A simple and accurate method for relative calibration of the energy thresholds on a multi-bin spectral x-ray detector is presented. The method obtains the linear relations between all energy thresholds in a channel by scanning the thresholds with respect to each other during x-ray illumination. The method does not rely on a model of the detector's response function and does not require any identifiable features in the x-ray spectrum. Applying the same method, the offset between the thresholds can be determined also without external stimuli by utilizing the electronic noise as a source. The simplicity and accuracy of the method makes it suitable for implementation in clinical multi-bin spectral x-ray imaging systems. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper reports the latest technological development on the Low Gain Avalanche Detector (LGAD) and introduces a new architecture of these detectors called inverse-LGAD (iLGAD). Both approaches are based on the standard Avalanche Photo Diodes (APD) concept, commonly used in optical and X-ray detection applications, including an internal multiplication of the charge generated by radiation. The multiplication is inherent to the basic n ++ –p + –p structure, where the doping profile of the p + layer is optimized to achieve high field and high impact ionization at the junction. The LGAD structures are optimized for applications such as tracking or timing detectors for high energy physics experiments or medical applications where time resolution lower than 30 ps is required. We have investigated a hard X-ray detector system using a combination of a plastic scintillator and multi-pixel photon counters (MPPC). Photomultiplier tubes (PMTs) have typically been adopted to read scintillators because of their high gain and large photoelectric surface, and studies on PMT and scintillator systems are well advanced. However, PMTs have limitations; for example, they are relatively large in size, require high voltage to operate, and cannot be used in strong magnetic fields. On the other hand, MPPCs do not have such limitations and instead possess high quantum efficiency and a large compact size. Therefore, we have studied a detector system that combines an MPPC with a plastic scintillator. The system is primarily intended to be used for polarization measurements of high-energy astrophysical objects. We achieved an energy threshold of as low as ~5 keV while operating the detector at low temperature (−10 °C), reading the signal with short integration time (50 ns), and using a low-noise MPPC. We also confirmed that the light yield of our MPPC+plastic scintillator system is comparable to that obtained using a conventional PMT to read the scintillator signal. The Advanced Telescope for High-Energy Astrophysics (Athena) has been selected by ESA as its second large-class mission. The future European X-ray observatory will study the hot and energetic Universe with its launch foreseen in 2028. Microcalorimeters based on superconducting Transition-edge sensor (TES) are the chosen technology for the detectors array of the X-ray Integral Field Unit (X-IFU) on board of Athena. The X-IFU is a 2-D imaging integral-field spectrometer operating in the soft X-ray band (0.3–12 keV). The detector consists of an array of 3840 TESs coupled to X-ray absorbers and read out in the MHz bandwidth using Frequency Domain Multiplexing (FDM) based on Superconducting QUantum Interference Devices (SQUIDs). The proposed design calls for devices with a high filling-factor, high quantum efficiency, relatively high count-rate capability and an energy resolution of 2.5 eV at 5.9 keV. Organometal halide perovskites have proven to be potential materials for X-ray detection due to their great photoelectric properties, high radiation attenuation and low-cost preparation. However, ion migration is one of the obstacles for its applications, especially, ion migration via surface is much easier in single crystal materials than bulk diffusion which could significantly degrade the device performances. In this paper, the KCl passivation layer is prepared by the thermal evaporation method and inserted between crystal and electrode The trap density and μ τ product of pristine and KCl passivated MAPbI 3 devices are compared, and the results demonstrate KCl as a passivation layer can effectively passivate the surface traps and improve electrical performance. The KCl passivated MAPbI 3 detector exhibits a high X-ray sensitivity of 3700 μ C Gy air − 1 cm −2 under −20 V bias. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract The recent development of silicon diode Low Gain Avalanche Detectors (LGADs) has opened the possibility of enhanced response and faster frame rates for the detection of X-rays produced by next-generation light sources. Preliminary results are presented on the exposure of an LGAD to a series of 500 MHz streams of X-rays with energies between 6 and 16 keV from the SLAC SSRL. X-ray absorption pulses from neighboring beam pulses, separated by 2 nsec, are well resolved. Additional results from a novel, AC-coupled LGAD, excited by a narrow infrared laser beam, indicate a point-spread function with a full width of approximately 400 μ m. Further optimization of the AC-LGAD design should allow the extent of the point-spread function to be further reduced, and a granularity of 100 × 100 μ m 2 or finer to be reached. Gd 2 O 2 S:Tb (P43) powder was widely used in soft X-ray detection due to its high light yield. Compared with P43, GAGG:Ce scintillator has high light transmittance, fast decay time and strong radiation resistance. Photonic crystals (PhCs) can be used to enhance the light output of scintillator. In this paper, two-dimensional (2D) photonic crystals that consist of square arrays of air holes etched into TiO 2 layer were fabricated on the exit surface of GAGG:Ce scintillator to enhance its light output. The luminescence spectra and the light output of GAGG:Ce scintillator with/without PhCs were measured at the BL08U1A beamline of Shanghai Synchrotron Radiation Facility. The results showed that the light output of GAGG:Ce scintillator with PhCs can be enhanced by a factor of 1.43 times compared with the reference GAGG:Ce scintillator, 2.35 times compared with YAG:Ce scintillator, 1.24 times compared with Gd 2 O 2 S:Tb scintillation ceramic and 0.76 times compared with P43 powder layer with the mass thickness of about 1.3mg/cm 2 with optical grease coupling. No significant change was observed in luminescence decay time between GAGG:Ce scintillator with and without PhCs. It makes GAGG:Ce scintillator with PhCs a promising material instead of P43 powder and YAG:Ce scintillator in soft X-ray detector. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Mainly encouraged by the increasing application of ion beams for cancer treatment (hadron-therapy) including carbon beams, the use of heavy ion facilities for radiobiology is expanding rapidly today. As an alternative to dedicated centers for treatment and medical research, accelerators like GANIL offer the possibility to undertake such experiments. Since 20 years, CIMAP, reinforced 15 years ago by the biological host laboratory LARIA, has been receiving researchers in radiobiology and assisted them in performing experiments in different fields such as hadron-therapy, space radioprotection and fundamental biological and physico-chemical mechanisms. We present here a short description of the beam line and the on-line equipments that allow the automatic irradiation of up to 24 biological samples at once. We also developed an original on-line beam monitoring procedure for low ion flux (low dose rates) based on the measurement of the K-shell X-rays emitted from a thin iron foil. This detector is calibrated on an absolute scale before each experiment by counting etched tracks on an irradiated CR39 polymer plate. The main purpose of this work is to provide reference data on X-ray ionization yields and energy spectra in liquid Ar to the studies in the field of Cryogenic Avalanche Detectors (CRADs) for rare-event and other experiments, based on liquid Ar detectors. We present the results of two related researches. First, the X-ray recombination coefficients in the energy range of 10–1000 keV and ionization yields at different electric fields, between 0.6 and 2.3 kV/cm, are determined in liquid Ar based on the results of a dedicated experiment. Second, the energy spectra of pulsed X-rays in liquid Ar in the energy range of 15−40 keV, obtained in given experiments including that with the two-phase CRAD, are interpreted and compared to those calculated using a computer program, to correctly determine the absorbed X-ray energy. Computed tomography (CT) is a non-invasive X-ray diagnostic technique that allows reconstructing cross sections of a patient׳s body, providing detailed information about structure and anatomy of organs and, in some extent, also about their functionality. Since the development of the first CT scanner for clinical use in the ‘70s, several improvements especially in solid-state X-ray detector technology with growing detection efficiency and fast response have led to the current configuration of modern ultra-fast, low dose whole body CT scanners. Such developments brought great advantages in the clinical settings in terms of image quality, dose effectiveness, imaging throughput, but also extending considerably the field of clinical application that were initially foreseen. Parallel to the roadmap of clinical CT technology, dedicated systems for high-resolution preclinical CT (or micro-CT) have seen a considerable growth in the last two decades, taking advantage of the modern technology of high granularity flat-panel X-ray detectors (FPD). This article aims at reviewing the milestones of the evolution of X-ray detector technology that have traced the roadmap of development of CT and micro-CT. The use of ultrarelativistic electron (positron) emission in thin crystals to estimate particle beam spatial sizes for projected electron–positron colliders is proposed. The existing position-sensitive X-ray range detectors restrict the minimum value of the measured beam size to a level of approximately 10 μm, which is far greater than the planned sizes of collider beams. We propose to estimate the electron (positron) beam divergence over the diffracted transition radiation from angular distribution measurements. The spatial size can be obtained from the calculated beam emittance or the experimental emittance, which is measured during the earlier stage of acceleration using optical transition or optical diffraction radiation. The problem of crystal destruction under the influence of a high-intensity electron beam is discussed. The use of surface parametric X-ray radiation, where the problem of crystal destruction is almost absent, to measure the electron beam parameters is also discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In the prospect of manufacturing ionizing radiation detectors, dense ceramics of α-HgI 2 with a strong preferred orientation were elaborated. X-ray diffraction showed that most crystallites exhibited their crystal c-axis perpendicular to the ceramic plane, which should be favorable for optimum electrical transport properties. Dark current densities about 2 nA mm −2 (under 0.2 V μm −1 bias) were measured and were shown to arise mostly from the release of carriers from trap defects (Poole–Frenkel emission). The X-ray sensitivity ≈1600 nC mGy −1 cm −2 and the μτ value ≈ 3 × 10 − 5 cm 2 V −1 were comparable to those of other forms of polycrystalline HgI 2 . To obtain both a high count rate of >10 7 s −1 and a detection efficiency sufficient for high-energy X-rays of >30 keV, we propose a scintillation timing detector using a proportional-mode silicon avalanche photodiode (Si-APD) for synchrotron radiation nuclear resonant scattering. We here present results obtained with a prototype detector using a lead-loaded plastic scintillator (EJ-256) mounted on a proportional-mode Si-APD (active area size: 3 mm in diameter). The detector was operated at ‒35 °C for a better signal-to-noise ratio. Using synchrotron X-rays of 67.41 keV, which is the same energy as the first excited level of 61 Ni, we successfully measured pulse-height and time spectra of the scintillation light. A good time resolution of 0.50±0.06 ns (full width at half-maximum) was obtained for 67.41 keV X-rays with a scintillator 3 mm in diameter and 2 mm thick. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The edge surfaces of single crystal CdTe play an important role in the electronic properties and performance of this material as an X-ray and γ -ray radiation detector. Edge effects have previously been reported to reduce the spectroscopic performance of the edge pixels in pixelated CdTe radiation detectors without guard bands. A novel Technology Computer Aided Design (TCAD) model based on experimental data has been developed to investigate these effects. The results presented in this paper show how localized low resistivity surfaces modify the internal electric field of CdTe creating potential wells. These result in a reduction of charge collection efficiency of the edge pixels, which compares well with experimental data. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper describes a new method of threshold equalization for X-ray detectors based on the Medipix3RX ASIC, using electrical pulses to calibrate and correct for the threshold dispersion between pixels. This method involves a coarse threshold tuning, based on two 8 bits global DACs and which sets the range of variation of the threshold values; and a fine-tuning, based on two 5-bits adjustment DACs per pixel. As our fine-tuning approach is based on a state-of-the-art methodology, our coarse tuning relies on an original theoretical model. This model takes into account the noise level of the ASIC, which varies with temperature and received radiation dose. The experimental results using 300 μm Si sensor and Kα fluorescence of Zn show a global energy resolution improvement of 14% compared to previous equalization methods. We compared these results with the best achievable global energy resolution given by the resolution of individual pixels and concluded that the remaining 14% difference was due to the discretization error limited by the number of equalization bits. A digital x-ray detector scheme based on a pixelated scintillator coupled with a fiber optic (FOT) array is suitable for many high-resolution x-ray imaging applications. However, certain challenges need to be addressed for fabrication of wafer-scale uniform pixelated x-ray scintillators. In addition, difficulties associated with implementation of the data acquisition system for acquiring output image data from the multiple image sensors used in the detector also need to be addressed. In this paper, a 2×2 FOT array-coupled digital x-ray detector scheme using a 5-in. pixelated scintillator is proposed. A novel fabrication setup along with the corresponding processes for fabricating the wafer-scale pixelated scintillator and implementation of a specially designed embedded data acquisition system based on a single embedded micro-processer (ARM) and four field-programmable gate array (FPGA) chips are discussed in detail. Preliminary experiments demonstrate that this pixelated scintillator-based digital x-ray detector scheme with an active imaging area of about 100 mm×100 mm shows considerable potential for use in high-resolution x-ray imaging. The Astrophysics Division of CEA Saclay has a long history in the development of CdTe based pixelated detection planes for X and gamma-ray astronomy, with time-resolved imaging and spectrometric capabilities. The last generation, named Caliste HD, is an all-in-one modular instrument that fulfills requirements for space applications. Its full-custom front-end electronics is designed to work over a large energy range from 2 keV to 1 MeV with excellent spectroscopic performances, in particular between 10 and 100 keV (0.56 keV FWHM and 0.67 keV FWHM at 13.9 and 59.5 keV). In the frame of the ORIGAMIX project, a consortium based on research laboratories and industrials has been settled in order to develop a new generation of gamma camera. The aim is to develop a system based on the Caliste architecture for post-accidental interventions or homeland security, but integrating new properties (advanced spectrometry, hybrid working mode) and suitable for industry. A first prototype was designed and tested to acquire feedback for further developments. The main difference between astronomy and nuclear applications is the radiation flux and energy-ranges involved. In this study, we particularly focused on spectrometric performances with high energies and high fluxes. Therefore, our device was exposed to energies up to 700 keV ( 133 Ba, 137 Cs) and we measured the evolution of energy resolution (0.96 keV at 80 keV, 2.18 keV at 356 keV, 3.33 keV at 662 keV). Detection efficiency decreases after 150 keV, as Compton effect becomes dominant. However, CALISTE is also designed to handle multiple events, enabling Compton scattering reconstruction, which can drastically improve detection efficiencies and dynamic range for higher energies up to 1408 keV ( 22 Na, 60 Co, 152 Eu) within a 1-mm thick detector. Recently, a novel plasma display panel (PDP)-based X-ray detector (PXD) was developed. The goal of this study is to develop a data acquisition system for use with the PXD as an imaging detector. Since the prototype detector does not have any barrier ribs or a switching device in a detector pixel, a novel pixelation scheme—the line-scan method—is developed for this new detector. To implement line scanning, a multichannel high-voltage switching circuit and a multichannel charge-acquisition circuit are developed. These two circuits are controlled by an FPGA-based digital signal processing board, from which the information about the charge and position of each pixel can be sent to a PC. FPGA-based baseline compensation and switching noise rejection algorithms are used to improve the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). The characteristic curve of the entire PXD system is acquired, and the correlation coefficients between the X-ray dose, and the signal intensity and the SNR were determined to be approximately 0.99 and 52.9, respectively. We demonstrated the material- and radiation-detection properties of cadmium manganese telluride (Cd 1− x Mn x Te; x =0.06), a wide-band-gap semiconductor crystal grown by the modified floating-zone method. We investigated the presence of various bulk defects, such as Te inclusions, twins, and dislocations of several as-grown indium-doped Cd 1− x Mn x Te crystals using different techniques, viz., IR transmission microscopy, and chemical etching. We then fabricated four planar detectors from selected CdMnTe crystals, characterized their electrical properties, and tested their performance as room-temperature X- and gamma-ray detectors. Our experimental results show that CMT crystals grown by the modified floating zone method apparently are free from Te inclusions. However, we still need to optimize our growth parameters to attain high-resistivity, large-volume single-crystal CdMnTe. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this article, a two-dimensional detector based on plasma display technology was investigated as a candidate for a flat-panel radiation detector. By using the three-dimensional Garfield code, the dependence of the electric field and multiplication on various electrode structures was examined. Based on the calculation of multiplication, three different electrode designs, including CAC, ridged CAC, and double-ridged CAC structures were selected and prototype detectors adopting these designs were fabricated and tested. The performance of these detectors was evaluated by measuring the charge density and sensitivity. The charge density of the double-ridged CAC detector during the X-ray for the on condition varied from 0.482 up to 2.59 μ C / cm 2 at the address bias scope of −500–−1500 V , while the cathode voltage was locked at - 400 V . The sensitivity of the same detector was 0.596 nC / mR ⋅ cm 2 in an electric field of 0.54 V/μm, which was the highest value. This was about one-third lower than the sensitivity of the amorphous selenium (a-Se) based detector at 10 V/μm. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Spectroscopy focusing array (SFA) and polarimetry focusing array (PFA) are the two major payloads of the enhanced X-ray Timing and Polarimetry mission (eXTP). Nested Wolter-I X-ray mirror module is implemented in SFA and PFA to achieve a high effective area. When evaluating the properties of the mirror module, the alignment of the optical axis of the X-ray mirror module and a quasi-parallel X-ray beam is a prerequisite for ensuring accuracy of the results. To assist the alignment of the X-ray mirror module, an X-ray focal plane detector with one of the largest detection areas, is designed based on a back-illuminated scientific complementary metal–oxide–semiconductor transistor (sCMOS) sensor(GSENSE6060BSI; Gpixel Inc). Then the characteristics of readout noise, dark current, and split-pixel event properties of the detector are studied with the self-developed multi-target fluorescence X-ray source in a 100-m long X-ray test facility. The energy calibration is performed based on the single-pixel event, and the energy non-linearity of the detector is also observed. Finally, based on the optical model, the eXTP mirror module is simulated, and the alignment test of the Wolter-I X-ray mirror module designed for Einstein Probe/Follow-up X-ray Telescope via the "Burkert test" method is demonstrated. This paper presents an upgraded in-trap decay spectroscopy apparatus which has been developed and constructed for use with TRIUMF׳s Ion Trap for Atomic and Nuclear science (TITAN). This device consists of an open-access electron-beam ion-trap (EBIT), which is surrounded radially by seven low-energy planar Si(Li) detectors. The environment of the EBIT allows for the detection of low-energy photons by providing backing-free storage of the radioactive ions, while guiding charged decay particles away from the trap centre via the strong (up to 6 T) magnetic field. In addition to excellent ion confinement and storage, the EBIT also provides a venue for performing decay spectroscopy on highly charged radioactive ions. Recent technical advancements have been able to provide a significant increase in sensitivity for low-energy photon detection, towards the goal of measuring weak electron-capture branching ratios of the intermediate nuclei in the two-neutrino double beta ( 2 ν β β ) decay process. The design, development, and commissioning of this apparatus are presented together with the main physics objectives. The future of the device and experimental technique are discussed. Medical X-ray digital imaging systems such as mammography, radiography and computed tomography (CT), are composed from efficient radiation detectors, which can transform the X-rays to electron signal. Scintillators are materials that emit light when excited by X-rays and incorporated in X-ray medical imaging detectors. Columnar scintillator, like CsI:T1 is very often used for X-ray detection due to its higher performance. The columnar form limits the lateral spread of the optical photons to the scintillator output, thus it demonstrates superior spatial resolution compared to granular scintillators. The aim of this work is to provide an analytical model for calculating the MTF, the DQE and the emission efficiency of a columnar scintillator. The model parameters were validated against published Monte Carlo data. The model was able to predict the overall performance of CsI:Tl scintillators and suggested an optimum thickness of 300 μm for radiography applications. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

To detect low-dose-rate X-rays, we have developed an X-ray-detecting module for semiconductor diodes. The module consists of a current–voltage ( I – V ) amplifier, a voltage–voltage ( V – V ) amplifier, and an alternating-current adopter with a smoothing circuit. The photocurrents flowing through a diode are converted into voltages and amplified using the I – V and V – V amplifiers. To measure relative sensitivities, we used three silicon PIN diodes (Si-PIN), a cerium-doped yttrium aluminum perovskite [YAP(Ce)] crystal, and a Lu 2 (SiO 4 )O [LSO] crystal. Three detectors are as follows: an Si-PIN, a YAP(Ce)–Si-PIN, and an LSO–Si-PIN. Using the three detectors, the amplifier output voltages were in proportion to the tube current at a constant tube voltage of 70 kV. Using a multichannel analyzer, the event-pulse-height spectra were measured to analyze X-ray-electric conversion effect in the three detectors. The output voltage of the Si-PIN was approximately twice as high as those obtained using the YAP(Ce)–Si-PIN and the LSO–Si-PIN at the measurement conditions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A novel on-chip, customer-design spiral biasing adaptor (SBA) has been developed. A single SBA is used for biasing a Si drift detector (SDD) and SDD array. The use of an SBA reduces the biasing current. This paper shows the calculation of the geometry of an SBA and an SDD to get the best drift field in the SDD and SDD array. Prototype SBAs have been fabricated to verify the concept. Electrical measurements on these SBAs are in agreement with the expectations. This paper introduces a new concept of silicon radiation detector with intrinsic multiplication of the charge, called Low Gain Avalanche Detector (LGAD). These new devices are based on the standard Avalanche Photo Diodes (APD) normally used for optical and X-ray detection applications. The main differences to standard APD detectors are the low gain requested to detect high energy charged particles, and the possibility to have fine segmentation pitches: this allows fabrication of microstrip or pixel devices which do not suffer from the limitations normally found [1] in avalanche detectors. In addition, a moderate multiplication value will allow the fabrication of thinner devices with the same output signal of standard thick substrates. The investigation of these detectors provides important indications on the ability of such modified electrode geometry to control and optimize the charge multiplication effect, in order to fully recover the collection efficiency of heavily irradiated silicon detectors, at reasonable bias voltage, compatible with the voltage feed limitation of the CERN High Luminosity Large Hadron Collider (HL-LHC) experiments [2] . For instance, the inner most pixel detector layers of the ATLAS tracker will be exposed to fluences up to 2×10 16 1 MeV n eq /cm 2 , while for the inner strip detector region fluences of 1×10 15 n eq /cm 2 are expected. The gain implemented in the non-irradiated devices must retain some effect also after irradiation, with a higher multiplication factor with respect to standard structures, in order to be used in harsh environments such those expected at collider experiments. The projection number, acquisition time, radiation dose, and full and 2×2 binning modes of the thin film transistor (TFT) X-ray imaging detector were evaluated for image quality in a prototype cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) built for medical applications. The detector is an amorphous silicon (a-Si) based TFT X-ray detector (PaxScan 4030CB, Varian, Inc.). The a-Si based TFT X-ray detector has a 397×298 mm 2 active area with 194 μm pixel pitch and 2048×1536 pixel, of which, 388 μm pixel pitch and 1024×768 pixel were used for the 2×2 binning mode. The Feldkamp, Davis, and Kress (FDK) reconstruction algorithm was used to generate 3D images, and the comparisons were made between different modes of acquisition. The American Association of Physicists in Medicine (AAPM) computed tomography (CT) performance phantom (model 610, CIRS) and the chest phantom (model 76-683, Nuclear Associates) were used to evaluate the image quality. Dental X-ray films are still largely used due to sterilization issues, simplicity and, mainly, economic reasons. These films almost always are double coated (double emulsion) and have a lead foil in contact with the film for X-ray backscattering rejection. Herein we explore the use of the lead foil as an image intensifier. In these studies, spatial resolution was investigated when images were acquired on the dental X-ray films with and without the lead foil. Also, the lead foil was subjected to atomic analysis (fluorescent measurements) and structure analysis (X-ray diffraction). We determined that the use of the lead foil reduces the exposure time, however, does not affect the spatial resolution on the acquired images. This suggests that the fluorescent radiation spread is smaller than the grain sizes of the dental X-ray films. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
