Heat-treated FeCo-based magnetic alloys were characterized using a suite of electron microscopy techniques to gain insight into their structural properties. Electron channeling contrast imaging (ECCI) in the scanning electron microscope (SEM) found unique grains towards the outer edge of a FeCo sample with nonuniform background contrast. High-magnification ECCI imaging of these nonuniform grains revealed a weblike network of defects that were not observed in standard uniform background contrast grains. High-resolution electron backscattered diffraction (HR-EBSD) confirmed these defect structures to be dislocation networks and additionally found subgrain boundaries within the nonuniform contrast grains. The defect content within these grains suggests that they are unrecrystallized grains, and ECCI can be used as a rapid method to quantify unrecrystallized grains. To demonstrate the insight that can be garnered via ECCI on these unique grains, the sample was imaged before and after micro indentation. This experiment showed that slip bands propagate throughout the material until interacting with the dislocation networks, suggesting that these specific defects provide a barrier to plastic deformation. Taken together, these results show how ECCI can be used to better understand failure mechanisms in alloys and provides further evidence that dislocation networks play a critical role in the brittle failure of FeCo alloys.

Multivalent rechargeable metal batteries offer a safer, more sustainable, and higher energy density alternative to lithium-ion batteries, though several challenges remain. Recent demonstrations of room-temperature reversible electrodeposition and dissolution of Ca metal indicate that it is possible to stabilize metallic Ca anodes with spontaneously formed solid electrolyte interphases (SEIs). However, further progress toward the goal of an energy-efficient, long cycle-life Ca anode requires correlating interphase identity with electrode performance. In this work, we demonstrate that the SEI formed from calcium borohydride solvated in tetrahydrofuran, an electrolyte that supports reversible Ca deposition, is a compositionally and structurally heterogeneous oxide, sufficiently thin to support Ca2+ cation transmission while stabilizing Ca from corrosive loss during long-term electrolyte contact. The significant advance demonstrated here is that ionically nonconductive materials, like calcium oxide, can form cation-transmissive interphases in which conductivity can be tailored through control of heterogeneity, providing an approach for stabilizing reactive metal electrodes.

We study the impact of irradiation on magnetic tunnel junction (MTJ) films with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA) and spin–orbit torque (SOT) switching using magneto-optical Kerr effect and transmission electron microscopy. Our results show that the thin-film stack is robust to gamma ionizing dose up to 1 Mrad(Si) and Ta1+ ion irradiation fluences up to 1012 ions/cm2, showing SOT PMA MTJs are radiation-hard. But, at very high Ta1+ ion irradiation between 1012 and 1014 ions/cm2, reduced coercivity and eventually greatly reduced PMA are observed, corresponding with an increase in intermixing of the CoFeB–MgO layers, particularly at the lower CoFeB–MgO interface. These results agree with displacement damage modeling that predicts higher damage in the layers closer to the bottom heavy metal and substrate. Compared to spin transfer torque and in-plane anisotropy MTJs, needing a top-pinned stack, a thicker heavy metal layer, and perpendicular anisotropy that is pinned out of plane by interfaces, all could make SOT PMA MTJs more susceptible to damage at high doses.

The mechanochemical reaction kinetics of sulfur with copper to form a metastable copper sulfide phase at room temperature is investigated in ultrahigh vacuum by modifying the properties of the copper during cleaning in vacuum. The measured kinetics is in agreement with a theory first proposed by Karthikeyan and Rigney that predicts that the rate depends linearly both on the contact time and on the strain-rate sensitivity of the substrate. The mechanism for this process was investigated using thin samples of copper fabricated using a focused-ion-beam and by measuring the crystal structure and elemental composition of the copper subsurface region by electron microscopy after reaction. The measured sulfur depth distributions produced by shear-induced surface-to-bulk transport were in good agreement with values calculated using rate constants that also model the reaction kinetics. Sulfur was found both in crystalline regions and also concentrated along grain boundaries, implying that formation of metastable phases is facilitated by both the presence of dislocations and by grain boundaries.

We report on the measurement results of the superconducting-ferromagnetic transistors (SFTs). The devices were made at Northwestern University and Hypres (SeeQC), Inc. (Nevirkovets et al., 2014; 2015). SFT is a multiterminal device with the SIS'FIFS (or SFIFS'IS) structure (where S, I, and F denote a superconductor, an insulator, and a ferromagnetic material, respectively) exploiting intense quasiparticle injection in order to modify the nonlinear I-V curve of a superconducting tunnel junction. SFT is capable of providing voltage, current, and power amplification while having good input/output isolation. We characterized the devices using different measurement techniques. We measured S parameters of the single- and double-acceptor devices at frequencies up to 5 MHz. Importantly, we confirmed that the isolation between the input and output of the device is quite good. However, the techniques typically employed to characterize semiconductor devices do not allow for revealing the full potential of our low-resistive SFT devices, especially those having two acceptors. In the latter case, we also tested the devices using the battery-powered current sources with floating grounds. Analyzing double-acceptor I-V curves recorded at different levels of injection currents, for an optimal load, we deduced a small-signal voltage gain of 33 and a power gain of 2.4. We suggest that further improvement of the SFT device parameters is possible in optimized devices, so that the device potentially may serve as a preamplifier for readout of output signals of cryogenic detectors and be useful as an element of other superconductor-based circuits. In addition, we used scanning transmission electron microscopy to identify some problems in the fabrication of the devices without any planarization.

Hydrogen lithography has been used to template phosphine-based surface chemistry to fabricate atomic-scale devices, a process we abbreviate as atomic precision advanced manufacturing (APAM). Here, we use mid-infrared variable angle spectroscopic ellipsometry (IR-VASE) to characterize single-nanometer thickness phosphorus dopant layers (δ-layers) in silicon made using APAM compatible processes. A large Drude response is directly attributable to the δ-layer and can be used for nondestructive monitoring of the condition of the APAM layer when integrating additional processing steps. The carrier density and mobility extracted from our room temperature IR-VASE measurements are consistent with cryogenic magneto-transport measurements, showing that APAM δ-layers function at room temperature. Finally, the permittivity extracted from these measurements shows that the doping in the APAM δ-layers is so large that their low-frequency in-plane response is reminiscent of a silicide. However, there is no indication of a plasma resonance, likely due to reduced dimensionality and/or low scattering lifetime.

The role of an Fe layer under a Sn layer to mitigate long whisker formation by the Fe/Sn interface through modification of the driving force for dynamic recrystallization (DRX) has been studied using a laboratory test vehicle with a Si (wafer) base material and evaporated layers of Cr (adhesion layer), Fe, and Sn. The latter two layers had thickness combinations of 10 nm Fe/0.5 μm Sn and 40 nm Fe/2.0 μm Sn. Aging was carried out for 9 days at temperature of 25°C, 60°C, and 100°C under stress conditions. Applied loads of 0 g or 500 g compression did not affect the results. Industrial test vehicles including electroplated layers of Sn and Fe (0.5 μm to 2.0 μm) were subjected to the same aging treatments. The absence of long whiskers and hillocks from the laboratory test vehicles indicated that the Fe/Sn interface altered the driving force of DRX rather than altering grain boundary mobility. The presence of depleted zones confirmed that the Fe layer did not affect the long-range diffusion. The industrial test samples showed that the Fe/Sn interface prevented the formation of long whiskers on the electroplated Sn films for similar aging conditions. The Fe layer provided a suitable barrier against Cu diffusion into the Sn layer. Copper in the Sn layer, even when only in solid solution, enhanced the DRX driving force for whisker growth.

Owing to their facile synthesis, tailorable porosity, diverse compositions, and low toxicity, zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF) nanoparticles (NPs) have emerged as attractive platforms for a variety of biologically relevant applications. To date, a small subset of ZIFs representing only two topologies and very few linker chemistries have been studied in this realm. We seek to expand the bio-design space for ZIF NPs through the targeted synthesis of a hierarchically complex ZIF based on two types of cages, ZIF-20, with lta topology. This study demonstrates the rapid synthesis and size tunability of ZIF-20 particles across the micro and nanoregimes via microwave heating and the use of a modulating agent. To evaluate the utility of ZIF particles for biological applications, we examine their stability in biologically relevant media and demonstrate biocompatibility with A549 human epithelial cells. Further, the ability to encapsulate and release methylene blue, a therapeutic and bioimaging agent, is validated. Importantly, ZIF-20 NPs display a unique behavior relative to previously studied ZIFs based on their specific structural and chemical features. This finding highlights the need to expand the design space across the broader ZIFs family, to exploit a wider range of relevant properties for biological applications and beyond.

Gold-plated copper alloys are used extensively in electrical contacts where diffusional processes are known to cause contact degradation. An in situ transmission electron microscopy (TEM) heating study was carried out to provide fundamental understanding of the aging phenomena in reasonable timescales. Samples to visualize the interface in TEM were prepared by focused ion beam (FIB) microscopy and heated in situ up to 350°C while holding at intermediate temperatures to enable imaging. The grain boundaries in Au coatings, specifically the columnar boundaries, provided rapid pathways for diffusion of Cu all the way to the Au surface. This unequal diffusion created vacancies in Cu which coalesced into Kirkendall voids. This in situ technique has been applied to visualize the diffusion pathways in electroplated and sputtered Au films deposited directly on Cu, as well the role of Ni and NiP as barrier layers for mitigating Cu diffusion.

The thickening behavior of aluminum scandium nitride (Al0.88Sc0.12N) films grown on Si(111) substrates has been investigated experimentally using X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), atomic force microscopy, and residual stress measurement. Al0.88Sc0.12N films were grown with thicknesses spanning 14 nm to 1.1 μm. TEM analysis shows that the argon sputter etch used to remove the native oxide prior to deposition produced an amorphous, oxygen-rich surface, preventing epitaxial growth. XRD analysis of the films show that the AlScN(002) orientation improves as the films thicken and the XRD AlScN(002) rocking curve full width half maximum decreases to 1.34° for the 1.1 μm thick film. XRD analysis shows that the unit cell is expanded in both the a- and c-axes by Sc doping; the a-axis lattice parameter was measured to be 3.172 ± 0.007 A and the c-axis lattice parameter was measured to be 5.000 ± 0.001 A, representing 1.96% and 0.44% expansions over aluminum nitride lattice parameters, respectively. The grain size and roughness increase as the film thickness increases. A stress gradient forms through the film; the residual stress grows more tensile as the film thickens, from −1.24 GPa to +8.5 MPa.

Tin-germanium alloys are increasingly of interest as optoelectronic and thermoelectric materials as well as materials for Li/Na ion battery electrodes. However, the lattice incompatibility of bulk Sn and Ge makes creating such alloys challenging. By exploiting the unique strain tolerance of nanosized crystals, we have developed a facile synthetic method for homogeneous SnxGe1-x alloy nanocrystals with composition varying from essentially pure Ge to 95% Sn while still maintaining the cubic structure.

Phase-change materials are important for optical and electronic computing memory. Ge–Sb–Te (GST) is one of the important phase-change materials and has been studied extensively for fast, reversible, and non-volatile electronic phase-change memory. GST exhibits structural transformations from amorphous to metastable fcc at ~150 ℃ and fcc to hcp at ~300 ℃. The investigation of the structural, microstructural, and microchemical changes with high-temporal resolution during heating is crucial to gain insights on the changes that materials undergo during phase transformations. The as-deposited GST film has amorphous island morphology which transform to the metastable fcc phase at ~130 ℃. The second-phase transformation, from fcc to hexagonal, is observed at ~170 ℃. While the as-deposited amorphous islands show a homogeneous distribution of Ge, Sb and Te, these islands boundaries become Ge-rich after heating. Morphological and structural evolutions were captured during heating inside an aberration corrected environmental TEM equipped with a high-speed camera under a low-dose conditions to minimize beam-induced changes in the samples. Microchemical studies were carried out employing ChemiSTEM technique in probe-corrected mode with a monochromated beam.

We present an in-depth study of metal–insulator interfaces within granular metal (GM) films and correlate their interfacial interactions with structural and electrical transport properties. Nominally 100 nm thick GM films of Co and Mo dispersed within yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ), with volumetric metal fractions (φ) from 0.2–0.8, were grown by radio frequency co-sputtering from individual metal and YSZ targets. Scanning transmission electron microscopy and DC transport measurements find that the resulting metal islands are well-defined with 1.7–2.6 nm average diameters and percolation thresholds between φ = 0.4–0.5. The room temperature conductivities for the φ = 0.2 samples are several orders of magnitude larger than previously-reported for GMs. X-ray photoemission spectroscopy indicates both oxygen vacancy formation within the YSZ and band-bending at metal–insulator interfaces. The higher-than-predicted conductivity is largely attributed to these interface interactions. In agreement with recent theory, interactions that reduce the change in conductivity across the metal–insulator interface are seen to prevent sharp conductivity drops when the metal concentration decreases below the percolation threshold. These interface interactions help interpret the broad range of conductivities reported throughout the literature and can be used to tune the conductivities of future GMs.

Multilayers composed of aluminum (Al) and platinum (Pt) exhibit a nonmonotonic trend in thermal resistance with bilayer thickness as measured by time domain thermoreflectance. The thermal resistance initially increases with reduced bilayer thickness only to reach a maximum and then decrease with further shrinking of the multilayer period. These observations are attributed to the evolving impact of an intermixed amorphous complexion approximately 10 nm in thickness, which forms at each boundary between Al- and Pt-rich layers. Scanning transmission electron microscopy combined with energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy find that the elemental composition of the complexion varies based on bilayer periodicity as does the fraction of the multilayer composed of this interlayer. These variations in complexion mitigate boundary scattering within the multilayers as shown by electronic transport calculations employing density-functional theory and nonequilibrium Green's functions on amorphous structures obtained via finite temperature molecular dynamics. The lessening of boundary scattering reduces the total resistance to thermal transport leading to the observed nonmonotonic trend thereby highlighting the central role of complexion on thermal transport within reactive metal multilayers.

Novel materials based on the aluminum oxyhydroxide boehmite phase were prepared using a glycothermal reaction in 1,4-butanediol. Under the synthesis conditions, the atomic structure of the boehmite phase is altered by the glycol solvent in place of the interlayer hydroxyl groups, creating glycoboehmite. The structure of glycoboehmite was examined in detail to determine that glycol molecules are intercalated in a bilayer structure, which would suggest that there is twice the expansion identified previously in the literature. This precursor phase enables synthesis of two new phases that incorporate either polyvinylpyrrolidone or hydroxylpropyl cellulose nonionic polymers. These new materials exhibit changes in morphology, thermal properties, and surface chemistry. All the intercalated phases were investigated using PXRD, HRSTEM, SEM, FT-IR, TGA/DSC, zeta potential titrations, and specific surface area measurement. These intercalation polymers are non-ionic and interact through wetting interactions and hydrogen bonding, rather than by chemisorption or chelation with the aluminum ions in the structure.

Helium is insoluble in most metals and precipitates out to form nanoscale bubbles when the concentration is greater than 1 at.%, which can alter the material properties. Introducing controlled defects such as multilayer interfaces may offer some level of helium bubble management. This study investigates the effects of multilayered composites on helium behavior in ion-implanted, multilayered ErD2/Mo thin film composites. Following in-situ and ex-situ helium implantation, scanning and transmission electron microscopy showed the development of spherical helium bubbles within the matrix, but primarily at the layer interfaces. Bubble linkage and surface blistering is observed after high fluence ex-situ helium implantation. These results show the ability of metallic multilayers to alter helium bubble distributions even in the presence of a hydride layer, increasing the lifetime of materials in helium environments.

Although hydrogen uptake in Zirconium (Zr) based claddings has been a topic of many studies, hydrogen uptake as a function of alloy composition has received little attention. In this work, commercial Zr-based cladding alloys (Zircaloy-2, Zircaloy-4 and ZIRLO™), differing in composition but with similar initial textures, grain sizes, and surface roughness, were aqueously charged with hydrogen for 100, 300, and 1000 s at nominally 90 °C to produce hydride layers of varying thicknesses. Transmission electron microscope characterization following aqueous charging showed hydride phase and orientation relationship were identical in all three alloys. However, elastic recoil detection measurements confirmed that surface hydride layers in Zircaloy-2 and Zircaloy-4 were an order of magnitude thicker relative to ZIRLO™.

A focused ion beam was used to obtain cross-sectional specimens from both magnetic multilayer and Nb/Al-AlOx/Nb Josephson junction devices for characterization by scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX). Automated multivariate statistical analysis of the EDX spectral images produced chemically unique component images of individual layers within the multilayer structures. STEM imaging elucidated distinct variations in film morphology, interface quality, and/or etch artifacts that could be correlated to magnetic and/or electrical properties measured on the same devices.

Nanocomposite Au-ZnO thin films in the dilute oxide ( −5 mm 3 /N m than for a typical Ni hardened, electroplated Au film at 1.3×10 −4 mm 3 /N m. Cross-sectional transmission electron microscopy studies inside the wear surfaces revealed that the extremely stable, low friction coefficients and wear rate of annealed Au-2 vol% ZnO film was due to partial coverage of the wear surface with a ZnO tribofilm that reduced the adhesive contact contribution to wear with minimal impact on ECR. The potential implications of this study in the search for an environmentally friendly alternative to widely used electroplated hard Au are discussed.

Core-shell nanostructures are promising candidates for the next generation of catalysts due to synergistic effects which can arise from having two active species in close contact, leading to increased activity. Likewise, catalysts displaying added functionality, such as a magnetic response, can have increased scientific and industrial potential. Here, Pd/Fe3 O4 core-shell nanowire clusters are synthesized and applied as hydrogenation catalysts for an industrially important hydrogenation reaction: the conversion of acetophenone to 1-phenylethanol. During synthesis, the palladium nanowires self-assemble into clusters which act as a high-surface-area framework for the growth of a magnetic iron oxide shell. This material demonstrates excellent catalytic activity due to the presence of palladium while the strong magnetic properties provided by the iron oxide shell enable facile catalyst recovery.

Mitigating corrosion remains a daunting challenge due to localized, nanoscale corrosion events that are poorly understood but are known to cause unpredictable variations in material longevity. Here, the most recent advances in liquid-cell transmission electron microscopy were employed to capture the advent of localized aqueous corrosion in carbon steel at the nanoscale and in real time. Localized corrosion initiated at a triple junction formed by a solitary cementite grain and two ferrite grains and then continued at the electrochemically-active boundary between these two phases. With this analysis, we identified facetted pitting at the phase boundary, uniform corrosion rates from the steel surface, and data that suggest that a re-initiating galvanic corrosion mechanism is possible in this environment. These observations represent an important step toward atomically defining nanoscale corrosion mechanisms, enabling the informed development of next-generation inhibition technologies and the improvement of corrosion predictive models.

Vacuum assisted ex situ lift out may be used for fast, easy, and reproducible plan view specimen preparation. Manipulation of samples via beveled hollow glass probes whose plane of interest is parallel to slotted grids allow for conventional FIB milling for S/TEM analysis.

This paper describes the evolution of friction-induced microstructures underneath the wear surfaces of nickel single crystals, and their role in influencing the steady state coefficient of friction. Using a custom built tribometer, friction measurements were made on {001} and {011} crystal faces along several crystallographic directions in unidirectional linear mode with a Si3N4 ball. Cross-sections of wear scars were prepared by focused ion beam (FIB) microscopy, and electron backscattered diffraction (EBSD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) were used to analyze the evolution of crystallographic texture and recrystallization. The formation of a thin (10–15 nm) ultra-nanocrystalline layer in the {011} orientation resulted in significant reductions in the coefficient of friction for that configuration, from the initial maximum of 0.64 to a steady state value of 0.32, after approximately 500 cycles of linear, unidirectional sliding. Crystal plasticity theory was used to describe the evolution of dislocation content in the worn material, which in turn provides an estimate of the characteristic grain size as a function of the imposed strain. An analysis of grain boundary sliding in ultra-fine-grained material suggests a mechanism for friction reduction. Model predictions of the contribution of grain boundary sliding (relative to plastic deformation) to friction provide a phenomenological description of the lubrication due to ultra-nanocrystalline surface microstructures.

High-performance memristors based on AlN films have been demonstrated, which exhibit ultrafast ON/OFF switching times (≈85 ps for microdevices with waveguide) and relatively low switching current (≈15 μA for 50 nm devices). Physical characterizations are carried out to understand the device switching mechanism, and rationalize speed and energy performance. The formation of an Al-rich conduction channel through the AlN layer is revealed. The motion of positively charged nitrogen vacancies is likely responsible for the observed switching.

Double perovskites of the form R2BB′O6 (where R is a rare earth cation and B and B′ are chemically distinct transition metal cations with half-filled and empty eg orbitals, respectively) are of significant interest for their magnetoelectric properties. La2MnNiO6 is particularly attractive because of its large expected ferromagnetic moment per formula unit (5 μB f.u.–1) and its semiconducting character. If the ideal structure nucleates, superexchange coupling can take place via the B—O—B′ bonds that form, and the moment per formula unit can attain its maximum theoretical value. However, we show that even in the case of layer-by-layer deposition via molecular beam epitaxy, the system can follow multiple reaction pathways that lead to deviations from the double perovskite structure. In particular, we observe a spatially extended phase in which B-site cation disorder occurs, resulting in Mn—O—Mn and Ni—O—Ni antiferromagnetic domains, as well as the formation of quasi-epitaxial, antiferromagnetic NiO nanoscale...

Ge2Sb2Te5 (GST-225) has been the most used active material in nonvolatile phase-change memory devices. Understanding the kinetics and dynamics involved in crystallization is critical for the optimization of materials and devices. A GST-225 thin film of 20 nm thickness was prepared by sputtering directly onto a Protochip and left uncapped and exposed to atmosphere for approximately 1 year. Early stages of crystallization and growth of the film have been studied inside the TEM from room temperature to 140 °C. The morphological and structural transformations have been studied by a Cs-corrected environmental TEM, and images have been recorded using a high-speed low electron dose camera (Gatan K3 IS). The amorphous to crystalline transformation has been observed at ∼35 °C. From the large field, high-resolution images obtained using the Gatan K3 IS camera early crystallization can be detected and nucleation rates and growth velocities can be obtained.
