Within the last fifteen years, a growing number of public libraries throughout the United States have started to rethink how their materials are cataloged and arranged. While the Dewey Decimal System has dominated library catalogs to this point, an increasing number of libraries are choosing to replace Dewey with variations of the Book Industry Standards and Communications (BISAC) model. This paper offers a case studies on four public libraries, two of which transitioned successfully, one in process of adopting a new scheme, and one that has since reverted to Dewey. It argues that libraries that successfully transition do so because they achieve staff embracement and public acceptance of the new system through effective communication and descriptive signage. Purpose - The Girl Who Buried Her Dreams in a Can, written by Dr Tererai, profiles a cultural, yet global experience of the power of believing in one's dream. Through this study of the similarities and differences of how children in the United States and abroad live and dream of a better life, this lesson seeks to enhance students' understandings of the power and authority they possess to effect change not only within their own lives but also in the lives of countless others in world. After reading the text, students will work to create vision boards illustrating their plans to effect change within their homes, schools, communities, states or countries. They will present their plans to their peers. To culminate the lesson, the students will bury their dreams in can and collectively decide on a future date to revisit the can to determine how far they have progressed in accomplishing their goals. Design/methodology/approach - This is an elementary grades 3-6 lesson plan. There was no research design/methodology/approach included. Findings - As this is a lesson plan and no actual research was represented, there are no findings. Originality/value - This is an original lesson plan completed by the first author Takisha Durm. Since the 1930s, comic books in America have risen to be an important component in the market of entertainment goods and services. This paper presents a holistic economic analysis of the modern American comic book industry in recent years, from the creation of the artwork, to its distribution system and, ultimately, the sale to the consumer. Using distributor data from 2005 to 2017, our analysis shows that while the industry has seen its share of booms-and-busts, the profitability of licensing, advertising, growing market concentration, and a steady readership has caused the industry to consistently grow, albeit at a slow pace, since its decline in the 1990s. Further, it is discovered that publisher "special events" and the recent rise in comic book-based films has had little to no effect on comic book sales within the American market. The serious non-fiction paperback was one of the principal vehicles for the distribution of expert knowledge in the mid 20th century. This paper examines the market for serious non-fiction in both the US and the UK between the 1930s and the 1960s, by looking at the market leaders in the two countries, Pelican and Mentor Books, published by Penguin and New American Library respectively. It argues that novel modes of distribution and acts of selection by authors, publishers and readers constituted a process of the co-production of knowledge that problematizes views of mid-century expertise as expressions of governmentality. Different patterns of distribution and market demand in the two countries shed further light on who read, what they read and for what purpose. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article deals with the marketing campaign surrounding the release of the book Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire in 2000. The books was a best seller, with nearly 8 million copies selling in 48 hours in the U.S. alone. The plots written by Scottish author J. K. Rowling captivated children everywhere. However, hype played a role in the popularity of the book. With contests, theme parties and giveaways, conditions were positive for the marketing of the book. Publisher Scholastic Inc. mixed in-store promotions with a few carefully placed advertisements to create a sense of celebration. It heightened the tension by keeping the title of the book jacket under wraps almost until the last minute, even forcing booksellers to sign secrecy agreements.

The majority of scholars in the humanities and the social sciences, the scientific, technical, and medical, and the legal, tax, and regulatory fields are interested in the state of scholarly book publishing because these books often play a pivotal role in the often-opaque tenure, promotion, and grant application process. In the past, several studies analyzed new title output and scholarly book prices. However, no one investigated the impact of the Recession of 2007-2009 on scholarly books. This study looks at the impact of this recession, its impact on scholarly book prices and new title output between 2009 and 2016, and makes a series of recommendations for university presses. PUBLISHING , *BOOK industry , *TRANSITION economies , *ECONOMIC reform , *FREE enterprise ,UNITED States politics & government - Abstract
This article presents several socio-political developments in the U.S. and at international level, as of March 17, 1997. It is by now a commonplace to point out that the centrifugal forces in publishing that created the juggernauts depicted, also created opportunities for publishers not in the mainstream. Of course, "independent" publishing is no more independent of the economic and political climate than anything else. Literary houses have frequently become nonprofit and supplicant to outside funding. Another development focuses on the effects of economic transition of China from Maoism to free market. In the countryside, land and water shortages brought on by rapid urbanization have created 100 million "surplus farm workers," an economically desperate army of displaced transient laborers whose numbers are sure to grow as China follows its plan to build 600 new cities in the next fourteen years.

The mighty heads of the U.S.'s conglomerate publishers, as well as a group of the small independent editors, converged on Paris, France in late March at the invitation of the French government. The U.S. was the theme of Paris Book Fair. The polarized U.S. publishing scene was represented accurately, but its extremes remained as separate as ever. While the conglomerates there control some 60 percent of the publishing industry as a whole, the intellectual scene is still dominated by the traditional, family-owned and serious publishers. The large media companies have not yet taken over all the major publishing houses.

The article discusses a price-cutting program launched by U.S. publishers in 1930. Some U.S. book publishers attempted to sell popular books at a reduced price of $1.00. Analysts say it was an attempt by the publishers to broaden the market for new books and oppose the forces threatening to restrict that market. The experiment of the one dollar books ultimately failed due to the mediocre quality of the texts and economic factors associated with producing and distributing the books. Based on this assessment experts say there needs to be a systematic reorganization of the book distributing industry.

The article discusses several political and economic issues. Thus far the nomination of former U.S. President Theodore Roosevelt, over the bleeding corpse of U.S. President William Howard Taft, has been regarded by his boomers only as a glorious idea. Unfortunately, however, all such splendid conceptions have to be worked out with a lot of details that may be irksome but are necessary. Perhaps the most noticeable feature of the year's output of books published in or about Canada is the number devoted to a description of the country as it is today. These books, generally written by transatlantic visitors, and based more or less on first impressions, are bound to be somewhat superficial. Yet it would be unjust to place too much emphasis on this characteristic, as the authors are in most cases men of judgment and experience, able by education and training to see things in their proper perspective.

It is opined that it is too early to gauge the long-term effects of the September 11 terrorists attacks on the American economy. It's safe to assume that mergers will take place. The only question is whether the economic downturn that marked the first half of 2001 and has now entrenched itself will slow down the trend toward ever-larger conglomerates or whether, on the contrary, the increasing economic pressures will force even further amalgamations and greater cutbacks. Everywhere, publishers and booksellers have debated the issues raised by the mergers and have sought differing and new solutions.

Books that make up the American exhibits at the periodic Moscow International Book Fair usually provoke criticism and clumsy attempts at censorship from Soviet authorities. This year the criticism and the clumsy attempts at censorship come from an unexpected source, an organization established by the U.S. president Ronald Reagan Administration to export American values to the rest of the world values to the rest of the world. The National Endowment for Democracy did not pick the 313 titles American publishers are sending to the book fair this September, but it did provide a $50,000 grant to the International Freedom to Publish Committee of the Association of American Publishers to help mount the exhibit.

The article focuses on the bookstore Powell's City of Books owned by Michael Powell, which is located in Portland, Maine. Powell participates in the community and cultural life of Portland. The role has actually been more direct. In the early eighties Powell's City of Books was the first business to sponsor Portland Arts & Lectures, the city's first serious author lecture series. Now, the series has moved from a 400-seat auditorium to a 2,700-seat theater, and it draws the kind of writers who fill the room. Portland, in fact, has a number of small independent bookstore owners who think Powell's is something of a chain itself, with its dominant public presence, seven branch stores and kiosks in public spaces and hospitals.

PUBLISHING , *BOOKS , *LITERATURE , *BOOK industry - Abstract
Mercury House is a sterling example of the independent press tradition of the U.S. It is based in San Francisco, California. It has been a publisher of quality regional-interest, political and literary books for eight years. Recently, however, the grapevine has resonated with rumors that Mercury House, historically a for-profit publisher, is considering changing its status to that of a nonprofit. Throughout the independent publishing community, the sudden interest of two of the nation's major private philanthropic organizations, the Lila Wallace-Reader's Digest Foundation and the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, is causing quite a stir. For the first time in the country's cultural history, major foundations have initiated nationwide grants programs for literary publishing.
