Abstract
- The mighty heads of the U.S.'s conglomerate publishers, as well as a group of the small independent editors, converged on Paris, France in late March at the invitation of the French government. The U.S. was the theme of Paris Book Fair. The polarized U.S. publishing scene was represented accurately, but its extremes remained as separate as ever. While the conglomerates there control some 60 percent of the publishing industry as a whole, the intellectual scene is still dominated by the traditional, family-owned and serious publishers. The large media companies have not yet taken over all the major publishing houses.
