Cronbach's alpha is a commonly reported estimate to assess scale quality in health psychology and related disciplines. In this paper, we argue that alpha is an inadequate estimate for both validity and reliability - two key elements of scale quality. Omega is a readily available alternative that can be used for both interval and ordinal data. More importantly, we argue that factor-analytic evidence should be presented before assessing the internal structure of a scale. Finally, pointers for readers and reviewers of manuscripts on making judgements about scale quality are provided and illustrated by examples from the field of health psychology.

Purpose: Guidelines for optimal transition call for multidisciplinary teams, including psychologists, to address youth and young adults' multifactorial needs. This study aimed to characterize psychologists' roles in and barriers to involvement in transition from pediatric to adult health care., Methods: Psychologists were invited via professional listservs to complete an online survey about practice settings, roles in transition programming, barriers to involvement, and funding sources. Participants also responded to open-ended questions about their experiences in transition programs., Results: One hundred participants responded to the survey. Involvement in transition was reported at multiple levels from individual patient care to institutional transition programming, and 65% reported more than one level of involvement. Direct clinical care (88%), transition-related research (50%), and/or leadership (44%) involvement were reported, with 59% reporting more than one role. Respondents often described advocating for their involvement on transition teams. Various sources of funding were reported, yet, 23% reported no funding for their work. Barriers to work in transition were common and included health care systems issues such as poor coordination among providers or lack of a clear transition plan within the clinic/institution., Conclusions: Psychologists assume numerous roles in the transition of adolescents from pediatric to adult health care. With training in health care transition-related issues, psychologists are ideally positioned to partner with other health professionals to develop and implement transition programs in multidisciplinary settings, provided health care system barriers can be overcome., (Copyright © 2015 Society for Adolescent Health and Medicine. Psychologists, interns, and postdoctoral fellows convened in Minneapolis May 3-5, 2007 for the 3rd National Conference of the Association of Psychologists in Academic Health Centers (APAHC): "Psychologists in Academic Health Centers: Traditions and Innovations in Education, Science, and Practice." This paper reviews the development and organization of the conference, which built upon the two previous conferences of the Association of Medical School Psychologists. The articles in this special issue are based on a selected number of the 32 conference presentations, covering a range of timely topics that reflect the conference theme. Participants' positive perceptions and satisfaction with the conference reveal the value of such conferences focused on the activities, interests, opportunities, and challenges of psychologists who work in academic health centers (AHCs) and teaching hospitals. Moreover, the content and success of the conference underscores the importance of APAHC as an organization serving the needs and promoting the interests of psychologists affiliated with AHCs.

Objective: Outpatient claims data from a managed behavioral health company for 1996 were examined to determine the extent to which patients received services from different types of mental health care providers., Methods: Claims data for 1996 were obtained from 75 plans with more than 600,000 members that were managed by one behavioral health care organization. Data were examined by type of provider and diagnosis., Results: A total of 349,686 claims were examined. Doctoral-level psychologists accounted for most claims (33.4 percent), followed by psychiatrists (30.5 percent), social workers (19.8 percent), and other master's-level therapists (13.8 percent). Ninety-five percent of patients with a psychotic disorder and 86.2 percent of individuals with bipolar disorder were seen either by a psychiatrist alone or by a psychiatrist in combination with another provider. Among depressed patients, 62.9 percent were seen by a psychiatrist, alone or in combination with another provider. Only 23 percent of patients with an adjustment disorder and 14.1 percent of those with a V-code diagnosis were treated by a psychiatrist, alone or in combination with another provider. Because psychiatrists treated sicker patients, their proportion of patients treated (24.7 percent) was smaller than their proportion of all claims filed. Most patients (78.9 percent) saw only one type of provider., Conclusions: The results allay concerns that managed care shifts patients away from psychiatrists to doctoral-level psychologists and less expensive providers. The majority of patients with depressive disorders and almost all patients with psychotic disorders had contact with a psychiatrist.

The literature on education and behavioral and social research in rheumatology represents diverse areas. Studies of medical education continue to be concerned with the effects of health care reform, the subsequent estimates of personnel shortages, and proposals to meet these shortages. Patient education in rheumatology is concerned with new guidelines for establishing the credibility of intervention programs through randomized clinical trials. Social and behavioral research focuses on measurement issues in pain and depression, the efficacy of cognitive-behavioral interventions to enhance functioning, assessment of social and psychological functioning, and the influence of gender, class, and ethnicity on health outcomes in arthritis. A unifying framework that should be incorporated into professional, patient, and public education, as well as into clinical research protocols is the biopsychosocial model of illness. This model builds on the biomedical model of disease to include the underlying social, psychological, and cultural factors that influence course and outcome of the rheumatic diseases.

Introduction: Training in addiction medicine and addiction psychology is essential to ensure the quality of treatment for patients with substance use disorders. Some earlier research has shown varying training between countries, but no comprehensive study of addiction training across Europe has been performed. The present study by the European Federation for Addiction Societies (EUFAS) aimed to fill this gap. Methods: A Delphi process was used to develop a questionnaire on specialist training in addiction treatment in 24 European countries. The final questionnaire consisted of 14 questions on either addiction medicine or addiction psychology, covering the nature and content of the training and institutional approval, the number of academic professorial positions, and the estimated number of specialists in each country. Results: Information was not received from all countries, but six (Belgium, Denmark, Ireland, Italy, Poland, and Romania) reported no specialized addiction medicine training, while 17 countries did. Seven countries (Belgium, France, Ireland, Italy, Russia, Switzerland, and the Netherlands) reported no specialized addiction psychology training, while 14 countries did. Training content and evaluation methods varied. Approval was given either by governments, universities, or professional societies. Eighteen countries reported having professorships in addiction medicine and 12 in addiction psychology. The number of specialists in addiction medicine or psychology varied considerably across the countries. Discussion: The survey revealed a large heterogeneity in training in addiction medicine and addiction psychology across Europe. Several countries lacked formal training, and where formal training was present, there was a large variation in the length of the training. Harmonization of training, as is currently the case for other medical and psychology specializations, is warranted to ensure optimal treatment for this under-served patient group. Climate change poses serious threats to public health and is exacerbating health inequities. Policy changes are essential to mitigate climate change impacts on human and planetary health. The purpose was to describe recommendations by the Policy and Advocacy Subgroup of the Society of Behavioral Medicine (SBM) Climate Change, Behavior Change and Health Presidential Working Group (PWG). The Policy and Advocacy subgroup was comprised of experts in public health, climate policy, and health behavior change, who worked together to identify priorities and develop recommendations. We worked under the premise that building political will for climate policy action is the most urgent goal, and we recommended promotion of citizen advocacy for this purpose. Because citizen advocacy is a set of behaviors, SBM members can use behavioral science to identify and scale up interventions, working collaboratively with communities targeted for marginalization. Recommendations for SBM included establishing an organizational home for climate and health work, providing training and resources, engaging in climate advocacy as an organization, and networking with other organizations. Recommendations for a proposed SBM Climate and Health Committee, Council, or Special Interest Group included developing trainings and resources, seeking opportunities for networking and collaborations, and identifying a research agenda. Individual behavior changes are insufficient to address climate change; policy actions are needed. SBM and similar organizations can support their members to work in developing, evaluating, and scaling up advocacy interventions for action on climate policy to magnify the power of the health and medical sectors to protect planetary and human health.

Translational sleep science has become a critical and fundamental focus in the field of behavioral medicine. This is the second issue in the special series of the International Journal of Behavioral Medicine focused on the physiological, psychological, social, and environmental concomitants of sleep and human health. The articles included in this issue draw further attention to the range and significance of sleep as a marker of health status and as a target of behavioral intervention. The research included in this series highlights the pervasive manner in which sleep health is intrinsically connected to health risk, behavior, and outcomes. The next decade promises to further behavioral medicine approaches to improving the provision of care and the overall public health through the implementation of translational sleep science research.

Health Psychology has received numerous papers over the past several months on topics related to the COVID-19 pandemic. Many of them concern depression, anxiety, stress, or other forms of distress in the general population or in health care workers. We have received far fewer papers on COVID-related health behaviors and health communications-factors that have played central roles in the spread of the pandemic and that are major topics in health psychology. Our experience is consistent with the published scientific literature on the pandemic. A Medline search that we conducted in late September yielded over 23,000 English-language articles pertaining to COVID-19. Over 1,400 of them concerned topics that are within the scope of Health Psychology. As shown in Table 1, COVID-related mental disorders comprised the largest category. Many other studies concerned other forms of stress or emotional distress. At least 248 articles addressed the profound ethnic and racial disparities in COVID-19 infection and death rates and in access to health care that are accentuating longstanding health inequities; 22 (9%) of these articles addressed behavioral or psychosocial aspects of COVID-19 health disparities. Thus, the literature on the behavioral and psychosocial aspects of the pandemic has been dominated, so far at least, by research on stress or distress. Background: Terror management theory (TMT) posits that people manage death-related anxiety through the meaning provided by their cultural world-views and the sense of personal value provided by self-esteem. While a large body of research has supported the core propositions of TMT, little research has focused on its application to individuals with terminal illness. If TMT can help healthcare providers better understand how belief systems adapt and change in life-threatening illness, and the role they play in managing death-related anxiety, it may provide guidance on how to improve communication around treatments near the end of life. As such, we set out to review the available research articles that focus on describing the relationship between TMT and life-threatening illness. Methods: We reviewed PubMed, PsycINFO, Google Scholar, and EMBASE through May 2022 for original research articles focused on TMT and life-threatening illness. Articles were only deemed appropriate for inclusion if direct incorporation of the principles of TMT were made in reference to a population of interest whom had life-threatening illness Results were screened by title and abstract, followed by full review of candidate articles. References were also scanned. Articles were assessed qualitatively. Results: Six relevant and original research articles were published which provide varied levels of support for TMT's application in critical illness, each article detailed evidence of ideological changes consistent with what TMT would predict. Building self-esteem, enhancing the experience of life as meaningful, incorporating spirituality, engaging family members, and caring for patients at home where meaning and self-esteem can be better maintained are strategies supported by the studies and serve as starting points for further research. Conclusion: These articles suggest that applying TMT to life-threatening illness can help identify psychological changes that may effectively minimize the distress from dying. Behavioral medicine research from across the globe has been catalyzed by the quest to understand the interactions between psychological, social, and physiological factors underlying disparities in human health. A more complete biopsychosocial model increasingly integrates advanced clinical and laboratory assessments of relevant environmental chemicals, biological mediators of inflammation, cardiometabolic and endocrine markers, infectious disease exposure, and genetic polymorphisms determined from saliva specimens. The overarching aims are to identify mechanisms, decode moderating processes that translate adversity into risk, and verify the impact of clinical intervention. This special issue of the International Journal of Behavioral Medicine highlights novel contributions of salivary bioscience with emphasis on research utilizing varied research designs (i.e., experimental, longitudinal, dyadic), incorporating a broad array of salivary analytes, and investigating the influence of psychological and social factors on human health.

Abstract Background Patients on hemodialysis universally experience detriments in their general quality of life (QOL). Sense of coherence (SOC) is a long-standing factor that affects QOL. Nevertheless, the association between SOC and QOL in patients on hemodialysis was seldom investigated. Our research aims to study this association in a sample of Lebanese adult patients on hemodialysis. Methods In this cross-sectional study, SOC was measured using the short version of the “Orientation of Life" scale (SOC-13). QOL was assessed using the Kidney Disease Quality of Life- Short Form (KDQOL-SF). The association between SOC and QOL and its submodalities was first explored using Pearson Correlation and multivariate linear regression analyses, controlling for sociodemographic variables and medical variables. Results 157 patients on hemodialysis (mean(SD) age: 62.1(13.81) years; 58.6% males) were included. Mean QOL score was 51.65 and that of SOC was 48.06.
