Abstract

The article discusses the increasing interest in studying aperiodic neural activity in clinical investigations, particularly in relation to psychiatric and neurological disorders. A systematic literature review found 143 reports across 35 distinct disorders, with a majority showing a significant effect in diagnostic and treatment-related studies. However, there is variability in results due to patient heterogeneity, disease etiologies, and treatment status, suggesting further research is needed to establish aperiodic activity as a potential biomarker or marker of underlying pathology. Recommendations are proposed to guide future work in this area. [Extracted from the article]
