This article reports on the Fifth World Congress of Sociology organised by the International Sociological Association (ISA), at the Shoreham Hotel, Washington D.C., during 2-8 September, 1962, under the auspices of UNESCO and in collaboration with the American Sociological Association. The meetings brought together 1,030 participants from fifty one countries. Three main themes dealt with were, sociologists, policy-makers and the public, the sociology of development, the nature and problems of sociological theory. Many of the 240 invited contributions and the main papers presented to the plenary sessions are being published in the periodical "Transactions," volumes I and II of which have already appeared. Volumes III and IV will be published during the spring of 1963 and will contain reports on the discussions, a representative selection of the shorter papers and a list of the participants. Grants from the American Council of Learned Societies, the National Science Foundation and the Social Science Research Council enabled the ISA to pay the travel expenses of most of the principal contributors and to offer free charter flight tickets to 80 young research workers from twenty countries.

The Treasurer reported that financial statements for 1975 received from the auditors show an operating deficit of $56 thousand, a little less than the anticipated deficit of $62 thousand. The Managing Editor reported that he may have overestimated printing costs in the 1976 budget. He had projected a price increase for paper which has not and may not materialize. The Chairman reported that at present the Association's bylaws provide for the election of a maximum of 25 foreign honorary members.

Approximately five thousand specialists in the behavioural sciences from all parts of the U.S. and Canada attended the fourteenth annual meeting of the American Orthopsychiatric Association at the Shoreham and Sheraton Park Hotels in Washington D.C., from six to nine March, 1963. This was the first meeting of the Association in the nation's capital. The American Orthopsychiatric Association is unique as a national professional organization in its composite membership drawn front professions of psychiatry, psychology, psychiatric social work, nursing, pediatrics, anthropology, sociology, education and the law, and its emphasis on the collaborative approach to the study and treatment of human behaviour and the prevention of emotional ills. Dr. Karl Menninger of the Menninger Foundation, one of the Associations charter members, was among the leading leaders at the presidential session. The opening session was organized in conjunction with the World Federation for Mental Health and was open to the public. Dr. Johan Gaining of the Science Research Institute of Oslo, Norway, presented a major paper on "The Application of Social Science to Peaceful Relations Between Groups and Nations," which was then discussed by Dr. Francois Cloutier.

The year 1983 was a historic one for the American Association for Counseling and Development. It came into being! To be more precise, the name, American Association for Counseling and Development, and its acronym, AACD, were adopted by the association's Senate at the annual convention in Washington, D.C., in March 1983 and were subsequently ratified by mail ballot. In July 1983, the Board of Directors endorsed the change of the association's incorporation papers to reflect its new name and thereby triggered a whole series of "ripple effects" through the association's by-laws and those of divisions, regions, state branches, and chapters; in its publications; and in its image with Congress and the professional community. This article presents abstracts of various papers presented at the forty-third annual meeting of Society for Investigative Dermatology Inc., held the Capital Hilton Hotel in Washington, D.C., from May 6-8, 1982. Some of the topics discussed at the meeting were, monoclonal anti-T cell antibody in the therapy of mycosis fungoides, extracutaneous dissemination of cutaneous T cell lymphoma evaluated with monoclonal antibodies and comparison of the allogeneic lymphocyte stimulating capacity of human epidermal cells to that of autologous peripheral blood lymphoid cells.

The eighth annual meeting of the Society for Psychophysiological Research will be held from October 17-20, 1968 at the Mariott Twin Bridges Motor Hotel in Washington D.C. Program chairman for the meeting is Clinton C. Brown, member of Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Science in Maryland. Abstracts of papers to be presented should be submitted to Brown before August 1, 1968. They must be limited to 250 words if the author wishes them to be published in the journal "Psychophysiology." Abstracts which are acceptable but for which there is no room in the meeting program will also be published in the journal.

The article presents information on the International Consultation-Conference on the Sociology of Religion that was held in Washington D.C. from September 8 to 10, 1962. Ecumenical in the sense that participants came from all parts of the world, the meeting was jointly sponsored by the Religious Research Association and the Society for the Scientific Study of Religion. It was supported by a grant from the Hazen Foundation. More than eighty registered participants represented twenty nations, including Canada, Colombia, India, Japan, Malaya, New Zealand, Pakistan, Poland, Puerto Rico and Sierra Leone besides Western Europe and the United States. Following greetings by Dr Lauris Whitman on behalf of the Religious Research Association and Professor Horace Fries; president of the Society for the Scientific Study of Religion, the first session consisted of summary reports on current work in the sociology of religion. Prepared papers by Dr Norman Birnbaum of Nuffield College, Oxford University, and Professor Charles Y. Glock of the University of California in Berkeley were followed by extemporaneous presentations representing other parts of the world.

The first National Conference on Educational Broadcasting, held in Washington D.C. on December 10-12, 1936, was sponsored by eighteen national organizations for the primary purpose of giving an overview of current practice in the use of radio for educational purposes. Outstanding leaders in various aspects of broadcasting were invited to discuss the problems with which they were particularly concerned. The conference was divided into two parts: general sessions at which everyone was expected to be present, and conference sections at which specific problems were discussed for the benefit of those especially interested. Among the conference sections, of which some twenty were crowded into a single morning and two afternoons, was one dealing directly with the subject, "Radio and Propaganda." What may prove to be the most widely used piece of propaganda of the entire conference was injected so inconspicuously that its significance was not recognized at the time. In the section on "Talks Programs," Thomas H. Reed, chairman of the Committee of Civic Education by Radio of the National Advisory Council on Radio in Education and the American Political Science Association, introduced by title a report, "Four Years of Network Broadcasting," which was too long to be read, but which was made available in printed form.
