The lexico-semantic field of water in Ḥassāniyya Arabic and Zenaga Berber : inheritances, borrowings and lexical innovationsIf water is scarce in the desert, the lexicon relating to water is rather rich in Ḥassāniyya. It has many peculiarities which, in part, have their origin in contact with the Zenaga Berber substrate.The article studies the lexicon of the two languages in parallel and compares it with the varieties which are close to them in order to identify the borrowings, the source language (if possible) and the innovations (shared or not). Taking into account metaphorical uses and analyzing numerous proverbs enrich the semantic study of the lexicon.The article has three parts. The first deals with water in its natural state. The next one is devoted to wells, which play a central role for the Bedouins. The last relates to the drawing and consumption of water., Si l'eau est rare dans le désert, le lexique relatif à l'eau est plutôt riche en ḥassāniyya. Il présente de nombreuses particularités qui, pour une part, trouvent leur origine dans les contacts avec le substrat berbère zénaga.L'article étudie le lexique des deux langues en parallèle et le compare aux variétés qui leur sont proches afin d'identifier les emprunts, la langue source (si possible) et les innovations (partagées ou non). La prise en compte des emplois métaphoriques et le recueil de nombreux proverbes viennent enrichir l'étude sémantique du lexique. L'article comprend trois parties. La première traite de l'eau à l'état naturel. La suivante est consacrée aux puits, qui jouent un rôle central pour les bédouins. La dernière porte sur le puisage et la consommation de l'eau.

Salamandra algira est la seule espèce de salamandre africaine. Ce batracien ne se rencontre que dans quelques massifs montagneux d’Algérie et du Maroc. Nous avons recueilli cent dénominations de la salamandre parmi les variétés de berbère et d’arabe pratiquées dans ces montagnes. Puis, nous avons décrit ce corpus en regardant ses motivations sémantiques, avant de l’interroger sous le prisme du contact linguistique arabe‑berbère ; avec pour problématique principale la détermination des stratégies de dénominations de cet animal endémique à l’Afrique du Nord par les populations arabophones. Cette enquête linguistique est suivie d’une courte présentation ethnobiologique des dictons et pratiques autours de la salamandre d’Afrique du Nord. Salamandra algira is the only African salamander species. This amphibian can only be found in a few mountain ranges of Algeria and Morocco. We collected one hundred salamander denominations among the Berber and Arabic varieties practice in these moutains. Then, we described this corpus by looking at its semantic motivations, before questionning it under the prism of Arab‑Berber linguistic contact; with the main problematic of determining the naming strategies of this North African endemic animal by the Arabic‑speaking populations. This linguistic investigation is followed by a short ethnobiological presentation of the myths and the practices turning around the North African salamander.

International audience; Arabic has influenced Berber at all levels – not just lexically, but phonologically, morphologically, and syntactically – to an extent varying from region to region. Arabic influence is especially prominent in smaller northern and eastern varieties, but is substantial even in the largest varieties; only in Tuareg has Arabic influence remained relatively limited. This situation is the result of a long history of large-scale asymmetrical bilingualism often accompanied by language shift.

West African Arabic inscriptions dating from the 11th to the 15th century ad are discussed. Their importance as historical sources is examined, and compared to that of other Arabic written sources, oral traditions, archaeological evidence, and Berber‑language inscriptions in Tifinagh characters. Leur importance en tant que sources historiques est évaluée et comparée à celle d`autres sources arabes écrites, des traditions orales, des données archéologiques, et des inscriptions en langue berbère et caractères tifinagh.

International audience; The area where Ḥassāniyya is spoken, located on the outskirts of the Arab world, is contiguous with those of several languages that do not belong to the Afro-Asiatic phylum. However, the greatest influence on the evolution of Ḥassāniyya has been its contact with Berber and Classical Arabic. Loanwords from those languages are distinguished by specific features that have enriched and developed the phonological and morphological system of Ḥassāniyya. In other respects, Ḥassāniyya and Zenaga are currently in a state of either parallel evolution or reciprocal exchanges.; L'aire du ḥassāniyya, située à la périphérie du monde arabe, est contigüe avec celles de plusieurs langues n'appartenant pas au phylum afroasiatique. C'est cependant les contacts avec le berbère et l'arabe littéraire qui ont eu le plus d'effets sur l'évolution du ḥassāniyya. Les emprunts à ces langues se distinguent par certains traits particuliers qui ont enrichi et complexifié le système phonologique et morphologique du ḥassāniyya. Sur d'autres points, le ḥassāniyya et le zénaga sont en situation, soit d'évolutions parallèles, soit d'échanges réciproques.

En este trabajo se estudian las referencias históricas a las traducciones entre el árabe y el beréber de la época almohade. Se señalan y analizan todos los datos que ha sido posible recopilar, y se realiza también un somero recorrido por los antecedentes de esta actividad en el territorio magrebí. Las traducciones árabe beréber del periodo almohade y el uso oficial de esta última lengua deben considerarse en el contexto de la islamización y reforma promovida por la dinastía, acción que se debió debilitar o pudo desaparecer con los últimos soberanos. En las valoraciones finales en torno a la traducción se busca dar respuesta a las incógnitas sobre la naturaleza y la función de esas traducciones. This article provides an analysis of historical references to translations between Arabic and Berber in the Almohad period. We examine all the data that we have been able to collect and we also perform a brief reconnaissance of the precedents in the Maghreb region. The Almohads translations between Arabic and Berber and the official use of the latter must be considered in the context of islamization and reform promoted by the dynasty, an impulse that could have weakened or disappeared with the last sovereigns. Finally, we seek to respond to the questions that arise from the analysis about the nature and function of these translations. International audience; Durant plus de quarante ans, Pierre Bonte a sillonné les contrées ouest-sahariennes pour recueillir des témoignages, interroger les mémoires des anciens, collecter les généalogies et confronter les récits des uns et des autres. Sans négliger l'existence des traditions à support musical ni celle de la littérature orale, il attribuait une importance particulière aux traditions orales historiques dont la collecte et l'analyse critique ont joué effectivement un grand rôle dans la genèse et la rédaction de ses écrits d'anthropologie historique consacrés à la société maure.Après avoir évoqué la question des récits d'origine et plus particulièrement le mythe du Sharif Bûbazzûl (littéralement ‘le shérif à la mamelle’) sur lequel il est revenu à maintes reprises — mythe dont l'un des éléments cruciaux est celui du père étranger (obligé de subvenir seul aux besoins de son enfant) —, je traiterai de deux questions liées à la problématique de l'alliance et du mariage. D'une part, j'analyserai deux contes maures en montrant, comme il l'avait affirmé dans sa préface à l'Encyclopédie de la Culture Populaire, que le traitement de la notion de genre est un thème majeur de la littérature orale. D'autre part, je proposerai une étude de quelques-uns des termes les plus importants et les plus significatifs relevant du champ sémantique du mariage. Mon approche, pour être très différente de celle de Pierre Bonte, se situe néanmoins dans une perspective complémentaire de la sienne.

This study of the term « hartani », used in part of the Maghreb (Arabic-speaking and / or Berber-speaking), is divided in two parts. In the first part, the uses of this term are presented – its geographic distribution, its phonetic and semantic variations, its quasi synonyms. The analysis successively focuses on Arabic dialects and Berber varieties.In the second part, the lexical field of slavery is revisited from the perspective of work and freedom on one hand, social hierarchy and skin colors on the other., L'étude du terme « hartani », en usage dans une partie du Maghreb (arabophone et/ou berbérophone), comprend deux volets.Dans la première partie sont présentés les emplois de ce terme — sa distribution géographique, ses variations phonétiques et sémantiques, ses quasi synonymes. L'enquête porte, successivement, sur les dialectes arabes et sur les variétés du berbère.Dans la seconde partie, le champ lexical de l'esclavage est revisité à partir des notions de travail et de liberté d'une part, de hiérarchie sociale et de couleurs de peau d'autre part.

Mauritania, a Muslim country where the majority of the population speaks Arabic, is located at the periphery of the Muslim world. By the first centuries of Islam, the western part of the Sahara was inhabited by Berber populations, with Black-African populations bordering their territories on the South and South-East frontiers. Since the arrival of the Banī Maˤqil at the end of the XIIIe century, Arabic and Berber speaking groups have coexisted more or less easily, the first imposing little by little their supremacy, starting with military and political power and ending with cultural and linguistic domination. If the close contact between those groups has left important marks on the Zenaga Berber (and resulted in its disappearance), Zenaga has also contributed to give Ḥassāniyya Arabic a number of its characteristics. The article studies the different stages of arabization and offers a historical reconstruction of Ḥassāniyya through the inventory of features shared with other dialects., La Mauritanie, pays musulman où la majorité de la population est arabophone, est située à la périphérie du monde arabe. Aux premiers siècles de l'islam, la partie occidentale du Sahara était habitée par des groupes berbérophones, qui côtoyaient, au Sud et au Sud-Est, des populations Négro-africaines. Après l'arrivée des Banī Maˤqil, à la fin du XIIIe siècle, groupes arabophones et groupes berbérophones ont coexisté durant des siècles, les premiers imposant petit à petit leur suprématie qui, de guerrière et politique, a fini par être également culturelle et linguistique. Si le contact étroit entre les uns et les autres a laissé d'importantes traces dans le berbère zénaga (et surtout favorisé sa disparition), il a aussi contribué à donner à l'arabe ḥassāniyya un certain nombre de ses particularités. L'article étudie les différentes étapes de l'arabisation et l'effet du contact. Il propose aussi une reconstitution historique du ḥassāniyya à travers l'inventaire des traits que ce parler partage avec d'autres dialectes.

Although Mauritanian Ḥassāniyya is an exception to this general trend (Taine-Cheikh 1994, 2007), the dialect has nonetheless retained traces of the region’s past and namely of the very gradual disappearance of Zenaga Berber. My goal here is to assess, based on the study of a particular lexical sub-category (verb forms with quadriliteral roots), the influence Berber may have had on lexical formation in Ḥassāniyya Arabic.; En général, c'est à la périphérie du monde arabophone que les emprunts sont les plus importants et que l'influence du contact sur le développement interne de l'arabe est la plus visible. International audience; The development of double negation in Arabic has attracted increasing attention in recent years (Lucas & Lash 2010; Wilmsen 2014; Diem 2014). The striking parallels between negation in Berber and North African Arabic invite an explanation in contact terms, and such explanations have indeed been proposed (Lucas 2010; Lucas 2013) and disputed (Brugnatelli 2014). However, in addition to serving as a postverbal negative, reflexes of šayʔ have a number of other functions across North African dialects not directly related to negation, notably indefinite quantification and polar question marking. The marking of these functions, too, shows striking Arabic-Berber parallels generally neglected in discussions of the phenomenon, and absent even from Kossmann’s (2013) comprehensive overview of contact effects on Berber. Taking these into account produces a more complete picture of Arabic influence on Berber, and provides clues to the relative chronology of the developments in question in both. As in other cases, it appears that Arabic influence on non-Arabic varieties sometimes preserves usages obsolete in present-day regional Arabic dialects.

International audience; This article deals with preposed topic specification in Berber and demonstrates how this pragmatic phenomenon was engendered by contact with Arabic by means of two grammaticalisation processes: replica grammaticalisation (Heine and Kuteva 2003), which led to the Type-1 topic specifier, whose borrowed matter has undergone light or heavy processing, and (ordinary) contact-induced grammaticalisation (Heine and Kuteva 2003), which led to the Type-2 topic specifier, whose matter was provided by Berber itself by means of system-internal developments. Furthermore, the article accounts for the functional parameter of contrast as being the probable trigger of the whole innovation process and hence corroborates Matras' hypothesis (1998) regarding contrast as a motivating factor for borrowing.

La préparation des farines et des pains à partir de céréales, constitue une activité-clef en Méditerranée, zone de l’origine de la domestication des blés, de l’orge, du petit épeautre, du seigle et de l’avoine. Les céréales sont utilisées sous forme de semoules, de pâtes, de farines, de pains levés ou non levés depuis des temps anciens. Notre démarche transdisciplinaire ethnobotanique et linguistique s’attache aux discours et aux termes cherchant à mieux saisir les usages des différentes formes de parlers, et à traduire ce que les groupes sociaux rencontrés attribuent comme signification aux aliments préparés et à la nature des plantes qui les composent. Ces études ethnobotaniques et linguistiques dans le Rif ouvrent une voie pour mieux comprendre ces savoirs, à travers l’expression du langage et la nature des échanges entre communautés parlant des dialectes différents. Le Rif est en effet une situation idéale à la fois pour le linguiste et l’ethnobotaniste pour l’étude des situations d’échanges, de contacts de langues et de techniques alimentaires, aux frontières entre groupes arabophones et berbérophones.Sur le plan ethnobotanique, ces travaux nous ont permis d’identifier les chaînes opératoires de transformation des céréales en farine, pain ainsi que les modes de cuisson, comportant un lexique très riche et explicitant l’importance de ces produits pour les habitants des deux villages étudiés. Nous discutons cet ensemble de techniques et les usages des produits céréaliers, du levain dans le contexte de leur insertion au sein des champs céréaliers et vergers d’amandiers environnants, et dans l’unité domestique. Il s’agit de données à ce jour inédites pour cette partie du Rif. The preparation of flours and breads from cereals is a key activity in the Mediterranean region, the area fo origin of the domestication of wheat, barley, small spelled, rye and oats. Cereals have been used in the form of semolina, pasta, flour, leavened and unleavened breads, since ancient times. Our cross-disciplinary ethnobotanical and linguistic approach focuses on discourses and terms that seek to better understand the uses of different forms of speech and to convey what the social groups under study attribute to prepared foods and to the nature of the plants that make them up. These ethnobotanical and linguistic studies in the Rif open the way to better understanding this knowledge, through the expression of language and the nature of exchanges between communities speaking different dialects.The Rif is an ideal situation for both linguists and ethnobotanists to study exchange situations, language contacts and food techniques, on the borders between Arabic-speaking and Berber-speaking groups.On the ethnobotanical level, this work allowed us to identify the operating chains of cereal processing into flour, bread and cooking methods, including a very rich lexicon explaining the importance of these products for the inhabitants of the two villages studied. We discuss this set of techniques and the uses of cereal products and leaven, the way they are inserted in the surrounding cereal fields and almond orchards, and in the domestic unit. These data are novel to this day for this part of the Rif.

International audience; In the Arabic dialects of northwestern Africa (the Maghreb), restrictions on the acceptability of short vowels in light syllables have led to resyllabification phenomena whose details vary significantly from region to region (Stumme 1896; Marçais 1977). In Moroccan Arabic, attempts to understand this resyllabification and the structural constraints which motivate it have provoked considerable theoretical and empirical debate within phonology, including radical reanalyses of syllable structure (Kaye 1990), and proposals of frequent vowel-less syllables (Dell and Elmedlaoui 2002). By contrast, the corresponding phenomena in Algerian and Tunisian Arabic, complicated in some cases by secondary gemination, have received little attention outside of comparative overviews of Arabic (Angoujard 1990). This paper gives an overview of resyllabification in Maghrebi Arabic, covering: the empirical facts about resyllabification, including regional variation; the main proposed analyses of the phenomenon, and the varying role of syllable weight across them; and the diachronic development that produced the current situation, including the possible role of contact with Berber (Kossmann 2013).

The sociolinguistics of the Northern African states is relatively obscure in terms of international research, since these regions do not feature significantly in the areas of Arabic studies/Orientalism, Romance studies or classical African studies. A similar problem holds for the scientific classification of studies on Berber. This article develops an africanist-sociolinguistic approach to central questions refering to multilingualism in the context of historically unfolding geo- and sociolinguistic profiles ofNorthern African nations. This will be discussed within the framework of a historical linguistic stratigraphy. The article broadens the concept of diglossia as used in the arabophonic context in order to include a multilingual dimension (polyglotism), and discusses models of conflict avoidance between native speakers of Arabic, Berber and French, respectively. Recent documentation has established that the Siwi language of western Egypt, unlike most other Berber languages, has two phonemic mid vowels appearing not only in Arabic loanwords but also in inherited vocabulary: /e/ and /o/. This article examines their origin. Proto-Berber originally had a single mid vowel *e, which appears to have been retained in Siwi only before word-final /n/. In all other environments the contrast between *i and *e has been neutralized, although word-finally this contrast seems to have survived into the 19th century. Instances of /e/ in other environments are phonetically conditioned, deriving variously from *i, *ăy, or *ă in appropriate contexts. The few attestations of /o/ are irregular, but occur in environments paralleling those in which /e/ is attested synchronically. Modern Siwi mid vowels are thus mostly secondary developments; except in final /-en/, they provide no direct evidence for the reconstruction of mid vowels in earlier intermediate stages of Berber.

This dissertation provides a grammatical description of Ghomara Berber, a Berber language spoken in North-Western Morocco by about 10.000 people. The grammar consists of a description of the phonology, the morphology and the syntax. In the appendices a number of texts and a wordlist are included. Ghomara Berber has been thoroughly influenced by Arabic resulting in parallel systems. In the phonology the consonants, the vowels, assimilations and labialisation are treated. Ghomara Berber has a number of spirantised consonants. In the morphology the parallel systems are most evident. The Berber and Arabic systems are treated separately in most chapters. Arabic diminutive patterns have been borrowed and applied to native Berber-morphology nouns extending the already existing diminutive formation. Many Arabic verbs can only be conjugated using Arabic morphology. Different from many Berber languages, the adjective forms a word class of its own. Arabic active and passive participles are taken over unchanged in Ghomara Berber. In the syntax the interaction between the Arabic and Berber in the relative clause and in mood and aspect presents interesting cases of language contact. This study is of interest to specialists of Berber, Arabic and Afro-Asiatic languages. It provides many interesting language contact phenomena.

International audience; Lentement les pratiques culinaires évoluent et, petit à petit, les anciens nomades sédentarisés se mettent à consommer des plats dont les recettes et les ingrédients doivent beaucoup à leurs voisins du Nord ou du Sud. Cependant, jusqu'au milieu du XXème siècle, les pratiques alimentaires des Maures étaient encore assez semblables à celles de leurs aïeux et tout indique que le lait occupait traditionnellement dans l'alimentation des nomades du Sahara occidental une place aussi prépondérante que dans les autres sociétés nomades du Sahara.Dans cet article, je m'appuie sur les traditions orales maures (notamment les proverbes et dictons) et sur l'analyse linguistique et sémantique du lexique pour cerner les différentes notions relatives à la consommation du lait. Les nomades de Mauritanie ayant été berbérophones (au moins pour une partie d'entre eux) avant de devenir arabophones dans leur quasi-totalité, cette étude, menée conjointement à travers les lexiques du berbère zénaga et de l'arabe ḥassāniyya, s'enrichit beaucoup de la comparaison entre les deux univers.

C'est d'abord sur cette arabisation dialectale que je m'interroge, en montrant qu'on ne peut pas la couper complètement du mouvement d'islamisation qui l'a précédée et qui semble avoir influé fortement sur l'image que ces populations pouvaient se faire d'elles-mêmes. Si, à partir du 18ᵉ siècle, l'arabité culturelle de cette région prend des contours plus nets, il faut prêter attention au fait que, derrière l'unité apparente du terme « arabe », se cache une dualité mouvante — ce qu'on appelle la diglossie arabe littéraire/dialecte —, à laquelle correspondent deux formes culturelles distinctes. Je propose ici de caractériser la culture savante des zwâye comme « aurale » (par delà la dichotomie écrit/oral) par opposition à l'oralité de la culture populaire en dialecte, telle qu'elle s'incarne notamment chez les musiciens-chanteurs. Dans la dernière partie, j'étudie l'évolution récente de la diglossie et les tentatives faites pour échapper aux difficultés posées par cette opposition, qu'elles restent à l'intérieur du domaine arabe ou qu'elles choisissent d'en sortir. Là encore le poids de l'idéologie se fait sentir et les représentations des locuteurs influent sur leurs productions langagières.

International audience; The present chapter examines how new negation patterns are created in Moroccan Arabic in the Oujda region, North East Morocco, through contactwith Berber (Tarifit language, North Morocco, see Figure 1).1 The discussed cases concern contact-induced innovation processes in MoroccanArabic negation, through which the morphological data as well as the syntactic structuring and semantic functioning have been modified by analogywith Berber negation.

International audience; Dialectology considers variation in language to be most commonly based on geographical distribution and its correlated phonological, grammaticaland lexical features. There are two approaches to dialectology: synchronicand diachronic ones. Synchronic dialectology studies the synchronic linguistic proximity of geographically contiguous language varieties. Diachronic, or historical, dialectology describes and explains the languageevolution and diffusion processes which lead to certain variations in form, meaning and structure by means of sociohistorical reconstructions. As these two approaches are interrelated, no clear-cut distinction can be made between them. Indeed, in variational linguistic research (viz. dialectology), any geographical diversity necessarily refers to temporal diversity (de Saussure 1973 [1916]; Lafkioui 2007). In addition to the horizontal (geographical, synchronic) and vertical (historical, diachronic) dimensions, linguistic variation also involves social diversity and individual diversity. The former – social diversity – includes parameters such as habitat (rural/urban), country of origin or country of immigration, gender, ethnicity, age, social class, educational level and educational type. The latter – individual diversity – partly overlaps with social variation, but also incorporates the ideological and psychohistorical aspects of the individual speakers (Lafkioui 2007, 2011a, Fc).In the case of African Arabic, it is historical rather than synchronic dialectology which is in need of additional and advanced study. A notable exception is the research conducted in creolistics, which is not only beneficial to dialectological but also to linguistic geographical studies (e.g. Kaye 1985; Miller 2002, 2004; Owens 2001; Versteegh 1993). The present volume aims at filling this gap, at least to a certain extent, by presenting thestate-of-the-art in research on African varieties of Arabic. It covers all the major areas of linguistic analysis (i.e. phonetics, phonology, morphology,syntax and lexicology), and presents in a clear and concise way data and issues from a wide range of less-commonly-quoted languages, with special emphasis on language contact phenomena. It comprises nine closely linked but self-contained chapters.

Le lien entre les langues et les cultures est vital et profond, ce qui rend particulièrement dommageable la disparition accélérée de nombreuses langues du monde. L'Unesco, qui l'a bien compris, a lancé ces dernières années un programme consacré aux langues en danger. L'un de ses résultats les plus tangibles a été la rédaction d'un Atlas of the World's Languages in Danger sous la direction de Moseley. La dernière version de cet atlas, beaucoup plus complète que les précédentes, recense près de 2500 langues (parmi lesquelles 230 se seraient éteintes depuis 1950). Trois d'entre elles, " Imeraguen ", " Nemadi " et " Zenaga ", concernent la Mauritanie et sont considérées comme étant, au minimum, " vulnérables ". Mon propos, dans cet article, est de montrer à quoi correspondent ces notions dans la réalité passée et présente, tant au plan linguistique qu'au plan ethnologique. Nous verrons que le parler des pêcheurs Imraguen et des chasseurs N(e)mâdi présentent des particularités linguistiques dignes d'intérêt, mais qu'il n'y a pas de langue susceptible d'être étiquetée " Imeraguen " ou " Nemadi ". Par ailleurs, si le zénaga correspond bien à une langue en danger, je discute de l'existence d'une ethnie correspondante.

International audience; The present article examines the grammatical origin of the negator NEG ___ bu – and more particularly its enclitic element bu – which has been created in Moroccan Arabic in the Oujda region, north-eastern Morocco, by contact with Berber (Tarifit language, northern Morocco, see Figure 1; see also Lafkioui (2013).1 As discussed elsewhere (Lafkioui 2013), Moroccan Arabic negation has been subject to certain contact-induced innovation processes, through which the morphological data as well as its syntactic structuring and semantic functioning have been modified by analogy with Berber negation. This study aims at explaining where the negator NEG___ bu originates from by developing mainly two diachronic scenarios. These are (1) the grammaticalization of a verbal form related to iba (or variant) meaning ‘there is no’ and presently occurring in Tuareg Berber and (2) the grammaticalization of the nominal head bu, attested in Berber as well as in Arabic.

Le present article s’interroge sur les principaux processus de construction identitaire (processus semiotiques interactifs) sur les sites Web plurilingues amazighs a base francaise. Il s’attache a eprouver comment Internet, comme outil de la mondialisation, permet d’assumer les fonctions des ressources linguistiques translocalement et de les relocaliser dans l’espace interactif (espace substantiel et cognitif). Cette etude s’interesse aussi au rapport particulier entre la diversite linguistique, les representations linguistiques et les identites ethniques contenues et construites sur les sites Web minoritaires par le biais des analyses de discours electronique (textes edites et creatifs) des interactants.

This was a final term paper for a Language Rights seminar at the University of Essex. I haven't revisited or revised it since 2012 but many people have seemed to want to read it in the past so I've deposited it.

Spoken Arabic and Berber show great variety in their pronunciation, as evidenced by dialectology studies. Some researchers have attempted to illustrate this variety using maps of the data collected. In this article, my goal will be to commend their work, but also to highlight the difficulties which arise when a purely geographic perspective is adopted. The choice of discriminant in relation to the possible variation mechanisms will also be broached, as, for the languages under study, spatial dissemination only partially explains the linguistic differences and similarities., Les études de dialectologie ont montré qu'il existait une grande variété de réalisations, aussi bien dans le domaine de l'arabe parlé que dans celui du berbère. Quelques chercheurs se sont efforcés de représenter cette variation en cartographiant les données collectées. Mon objectif, dans le présent article, est de leur rendre hommage, mais aussi d'attirer l'attention sur les difficultés susceptibles de se poser dans le cadre d'études adoptant une perspective exclusivement géographique. Dans la troisième partie, je discute du choix des discriminants, en relation avec la question des différents mécanismes de variation. En effet, pour les langues ici concernées, la diffusion spatiale n'explique que partiellement les ressemblances et divergences linguistiques.
