Ambiente e Água - An International Journal of Applied Science just published its eighth issue, completing the third number of its third volume with all issues published on time. The number of submissions increased significantly and as a result the number of published papers. Eleven articles were published in this issue. The geographic and institutional origin of authors also increased not only throughout Brazil, but also from abroad. First authors came from 28 different institutions in Brazil from all over the country and from 5 different institutions from abroad. The average number of weekly visitors increased from ~ 300 per week in 2007 to ~ 700 recently. The international interest in the journal is clearly evidenced by the number of countries and geographical coverage of readers. One significant improvement was the increased number of qualified peer reviewers registered for article's evaluation, as listed in this issue. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

To increase its visibility among the general public and the international scientific community, the "Croatian Medical Journal" ("CMJ"), a small journal from the so-called scientific periphery, introduced a media strategy of sending press releases to journalists and email notices to the newsdesk of a high-profile international scientific journal. Subsequent news coverage and the positive response of journalists show that press releases and targeted email notices increased international visibility of articles published in a small scientific journal, and improved communication with journalists as mediators of scientific information to the general public. The article focuses on the close-knit community around the Communist writers and intellectuals of the Writers' International and "Left Review" from 1934 to 1938. The periodical incorporates contemporary leftist opinions from several writers including Naomi Mitchison and Stephen Spender. The production of leftist journalism and literature became crucial in the 1930s due to domestic and international crises. Communist and socialist writers took advantage of a burgeoning community of publications that were often produced by a group of writers and editors.

ECONOMICS literature ,PERIODICALS ,PERIODICAL editors ,JOURNALISTS ,AUTHORS ,PUBLISHING - Abstract
This paper examines data on the institutional backgrounds of editors and authors of the top 30 economics journals, identified by their 1995 citation impact. It is revealed, for example, that 70.8% of the journal editors were located in the United States, and twelve U.S. universities accounted for the location of more than 38.9%. Concerning journal article authors, 65.7% were located in U.S. institutions and twelve U.S. universities accounted for 21.8%. Arguably, the degree of institutional and geographical concentration of editors and authors may be unhealthy for innovative research in economics. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

BOOK reviewing ,PUBLISHING ,MANUSCRIPTS ,PERIODICALS ,JOURNALISTS ,LITERATURE - Abstract
The article focuses on the book reviewing process employed by various publications for their articles. The outside review process is essential both to the integrity of publication decisions and to the quality of what appears. The thoughtful, often lengthy, written comments of outside reviewers usually serve well to explain reasons behind negative decisions to those whose work is not accepted and greatly aid those whose work is accepted subject to revision. Problems with the review process are few, but two merit attention. The first is delay. While most reviewers return their evaluations within a month or less, a minority take two months or more. The second problem, which fortunately characterizes only a small handful of returned reviews, occurs when a reviewer loses sight of the fact that goals of the review process are two: to aid the editor in deciding whether to publish a particular manuscript, and to help an author appreciate the strengths and weaknesses of his or her work so that the work may be improved if the piece is publishable with revision or so that the author may better appreciate what the standards of the profession demand if the work is not salvageable.

10. STRATEGIES FOR A PUBLISH OR PERISH WORLD OR WHY JOURNALS ARE UNREADABLE.

PUBLISHING ,CREATIVE writing ,PERIODICALS ,JOURNALISM ,EDITORIALS ,JOURNALISTS - Abstract
The article presents suggestions to academicians who fail to publish just because they do not know and/or use the time-honored success strategies for publishing. To succeed in publishing, the academician must develop a "marketing" orientation. In this orientation articles are prepared and experiments designed with the intention of pleasing the editorial board of the journal. By reviewing articles published in the journal, the editorial biases often become apparent. At professional meetings, it is important to corner the editors and explore these biases. Also it is important to be known and liked by the editors since one bias is usually to publish the work of friends. The marketing orientation must be contrasted with a "pure science" orientation in which knowledge is pursued for knowledge's sake. The latter approach may use the scientific method, control of variables and pre-experiment hypotheses definition. The empirical experiment is the most frequent article in the soft-science journals. Here, it is important to take a marketing orientation.

PERIODICALS , *PUBLISHING , *CHANGE , *JOURNALISTS , *SOCIOLOGY ,READERS - Abstract
The article presents author's narrative of the recent changing in the journal "The Sociological Quarterly." Readers of this journal have already detected one major change when they viewed our new cover, designed by the very talented Steven Rachwal. This redesign reflects two other changes that have occurred simultaneously: the Board of the Midwest Sociological Society has contracted with Blackwell Publishing to publish the journal for the next five years, and it has appointed me to serve as Editor for the next four years. Despite these changes, everyone associated with the journal is committed to preserving the legacy of a publication that ranks among the most important generalist journals in the discipline. We build on a long tradition of publishing high-quality, often cutting-edge, scholarship. Readers will be interested in knowing that one of the projects already underway is the digitization of the journal, from Volume 1, Number 1 in 1960 to the present. Once this task is complete, journal subscribers will have full and easy access to the entire history of TSQ.

JOURNALISTS ,PERIODICALS ,PUBLISHING - Abstract
This article focuses on views of the author about the journal "Contemporary Jewry." The articles for the special issue on "Canadian Jewry," were solicited by guest editor Morton Weinfeki of McGill University in collaboration with former editor Steven M Cohen. The final review of the manuscripts was completed by associate editor J. Alan Winter and by the author. Additional help was provided by the staff of University of Connecticut, Center for Judaic Studies and Contemporary Jewish Life, including Celeste Machado, Linda Snyder, and David Zehgson, serving as special research assistant. A number of people have been working hard to make this transition between a semiannual journal to an annual review. They include associate editor J. Alan Winter of Connecticut College and Rena Cheskis of Yale University. In addition, former president of the ASSJ Harold Himmelfarb of Ohio State University and current president Egon Mayer of Brooklyn College have provided much encouragement and support.

The article focuses on the standard peer reviewed journal which rest on three pillars. This includes, the interest and importance of the submissions, the value and efforts of the reviewer and the quality of the editing. The editors see reviewing as a community task where all active scientists should be as ready to take part as they are to submit papers for review. It is one basis of corporate interest and responsibility that one can maintain the independence and quality of the science published. The approach to manage the reducing delays in publication, journal will move in 2007 to immediate on-line publication of papers once accepted and edited.

PERIODICALS , *JOURNALISTS , *PERIODICAL publishing , *PUBLISHING - Abstract
The editor of the periodical "Sociological Forum," is happy to present Sidney Tarrow's searching examination of two recent works by Charles Tilly. He felt that it would be a dis-service to the periodical's readers to fail to review these important and no doubt controversial works, but he could not very well call upon the author to choose the reviewer. The problem was solved by persuading Tarrow to prepare this review essay in deepest secrecy to ensure that its contents would remain unknown to the editor of the "Book Review Essays" section until publication. This underhanded tactic seemed the best way to protect Tilly from advance warning of any criticisms that might appear, as well as from early awareness of any kind words that might creep into the evaluation.

The article informs that the present publishers, Macmillan Journals Ltd., have regretfully informed that, as from the end of the current volume, they will be unable to continue publication of the journal "Science Studies." This decision was reached on the basis of economic considerations, and people have been obliged to consider alternative ways and means of continuing publication. Over the last three and a half years the journal has become widely known, and they have had many indications of its usefulness, both in research and in teaching. Editors are pleased to report that work of a high intellectual standard continues to flow into their offices, at a rate of between four and ten articles per month. In view of this, editors feel encouraged to assure their readers that they are in the final stages of negotiation with a new publisher, and that the journal will continue.

The article provides notes from the editor of the journal. It states that the paper of Dr. Jordan in the previous issue was reviewed by two highly qualified ecosystems scientists and nobody else. It is the journa'ls policy to have manuscripts reviewed by experts in the same field as the subject of the manuscript. The author states that the journal is always more than happy to entertain suggestions from authors about possible reviewers for their papers. He stresses that the reason they published Dr. Hall's article is that they want more ecosystems papers in the journal.

The article announces that with the next, issue of the journal "Philippine Sociological Review," will again resume its publication of single issues. The double issues over the past two years were necessary to bring the journal up to date. With this issue editors will have attained that goal. Included in this issue is a complete author and title index of the "Philippine Sociological Review," from Volume I to XII inclusive. It is the first index of the journal to be published. Individual copies of the index are available. Another feature of this issue is the report on-going research. Researchers are hoping to make such reports a yearly feature of the journal. The editors would like to thank all who responded to survey questionnaire. For some months now researchers have been encouraging their readers to submit comments on published articles, as well as news items on the activities of sociologists and anthropologists engaged in study here and abroad on matters of interest to the Philippines.
