Background: Although medical school typically lasts 4 years, little attention has been devoted to the structure of the educational experience that takes place during the final year of medical school.Summary: In this perspectives paper, we outline goals for the 4th year of medical school to facilitate a transition from undergraduate to graduate medical education. We provide recommendations for capstone courses, subinternship rotations, and specialty-specific schedules, and we conclude with recommendations to medical students and medical schools for how to use the recommendations contained in this document.Conclusions: We provide an overview of general competencies and specialty specific recommendations to serve as a foundation for medical schools to develop robust 4th-year curricula and for medical students to plan their 4th-year schedules. Librarians, through their professional associations, have long been committed to the social justice principle embedded in the concept of 'free access to information'. External censorship challenges to library collections threaten this principle overtly. However, censorship can also occur in libraries in various covert and often unconcious ways. This discussion paper raises concerns about current practices and processes which can effectively censor library collections from within. In this paper I describe the origin and spirit of the meeting of about 200 European, Israeli, and American psychoanalysts for a week in Siracusa, Sicily, to consider our work as embedded in our Greco-Roman cultural roots while we reveled, Dionysius-like, in that culture in many forms: drama, archeology, food, wine, and music. Organized by five institutes and hosted by ISIPSé (Rome), in June 2004, this meeting revolved around evening performances of Medea and Oedipus Rex in the ancient Greek theater and was entitled "Dionysius' Ear: Trauma, Tragedy, and Psychoanalytic Listening." The article presents a working paper which aims to suggest a possible framework to develop a meaningful relationship between the Organization of the Black Sea Economic Cooperation (BSEC) and European Union (EU) institutions. It is stated that the interaction between BSEC and the EU is meant to be cost-effective and mutually advantageous. It is added that better coordination of activities, policies, resources and financial instruments is of crucial importance for meaningful progress.

The Journal of Hydraulic Research (JHR) reaches in 2012 the 50th publication year, so that an adequate look back is appropriate. This paper describes the foundations of both the International Association of Hydro-environment Engineering and Research (IAHR) and its flagship journal JHR. The latter was a significant addition to the then existing hydraulic engineering research journals, and it was well received particularly among the IAHR members. The development of JHR is described in terms of the journal presentation, the editors and the 10 top-cited papers. It is noted that papers mainly with a computational background and with problems in river engineering count in these seminal works. Business travel is a major contributor to the greenhouse gas emissions of knowledge organizations. Through four case studies, the present research uses qualitative-structuring content analysis to identify seven dominant themes concerning reasons, strategies, and measures for decarbonizing business travel. The paper provides an in-depth examination of the structural and behavioral barriers to business travel decarbonization, highlights the need for a holistic approach to business travel decarbonization, and provides insight into the challenges organizations face in aligning their business interests and sustainability commitments. The main findings are that limited progress with business travel decarbonization raises questions about the effectiveness of voluntarism, that the question of who bears responsibility for decarbonization remains unresolved, and that a transition from non-behavioral approaches to changes in business-travel behavior is needed. By conceptualizing current states and mechanisms and considering relevant systemic interdependencies between travelers, organizations, and the environment, the paper presents a holistic conceptual model that extends the theoretical understanding of business travel decarbonization. In practical terms, the paper outlines how successful decarbonization in knowledge organizations can be achieved in terms of the interplay among reasons, strategies, and measures and provides concrete recommendations for action for organizations. Since 2010 the English planning system, like others across Europe, has undergone a series of market- oriented reforms. There has been a concerted attempt to make state organisations, and those in receipt of public funds, more entrepreneurial and financially proactive and independent. This paper focuses on one manifestation of these wider trends - the regulation of English Housing Associations [HAs] as examples of organisations that are under pressure to take on more financial risks and deliver a wider range of affordable housing for communities in need. Drawing on in-depth qualitative research, the paper assesses some of the regulatory and governmental challenges that emerge in using market-led forms of coordination. It examines the role of new regulators and the ways which they seek to 'co- produce' regulations with HAs in more liquid and negotiated ways. We show that in reality decisions are taken in response to a polycentric mix of simultaneous regulatory pressures that act as gravitational pulls on the activities and decisions made by HAs, rather than enforcing a consistent and linear form of regulatory control. Data is drawn from a survey of the urban poor in Cleveland, Ohio. "The Self and Political Role: A Symbolic Interactionist Approach to Political Ideology" demonstrates an association between the individual's self-conception and his perception of the political role. It tests a general hypothesis, derived from symbolic interaction theory, which relates left-wing and right-wing political role perception to the individual's view of himself as an actor in the social system.

The article presents information on the revised division by-laws approved at the 2006 business meeting of the Engineering Economy Division of the American Society of Engineering Education. The objectives of the division including the promotion of a more effective use of the principles of engineering economy were mentioned. This article presents an overview of the congresses and conventions conducted by the European Accounting Association (EAA). The first five congresses of the association can be called pioneer congresses as they laid the foundation for the future annual congress of the EAA. Earlier, the organizers had to do most of the work manually and use only traditional postal services. There were 107 participants from 13 countries at the Paris congress of 1978. The final figures were greater, since there were late entries as have characterized all previous congresses. If was quite a large international meeting of accounting academics at that time considering the fact that a relatively larger proportion of the participants were professors than ever before. More young researchers only later started attending EAA congresses. The Third Annual Congress of the EAA was organized in Amsterdam, with nearly 200 participants from 17 countries. A total of 53 papers were offered in concurrent sessions of 18 topics. Financial accounting matters were still in the foreground with respect to paper presentations. Accounting education problems interested participants more than during the first two congresses. The period of growth started with the Glasgow congress of 1993, as the number of participants rose to well over 200 and the number of countries to 24. More than 60 papers were presented in the parallel sessions. All these figures represented new records.

The aim of this paper is to look at journals and CPD together with activities to help you engage with current literature, practice and research. Women attained leadership roles within the American Physical Education Association much earlier than in organizations like the American Medical Association and the American Physiological Society. Women also were members of the American Academy of Physical Education before its official founding in 1930. Archival records and responses by current members suggest that, for most part, they believe that their experiences have been positive. Since 1941, 18 women have been elected AAKPE president. Between 1951, when the publishing of papers/responses at annual meetings began, and 1979, contributions by women ranged from about 33-44%. Since 1980, the percentage has declined as has the number of women elected to Academy membership. This paper describes innovative library services to distance students negotiated through a geographically dispersed consortium, the Council of Prairie and Pacific University Libraries (COPPUL). The Distance Education Forum (DE Forum) is one of the most active member groups within COPPUL, and has had a number of successes in collaborative services over the years. This paper provides an overview of how the DE Forum works, its Web site, and its ways of working through small sub-teams coordinated via an annual meeting. This paper studies the dynamics of political mobilization of two transnational organizations – Assemblea Nacional Catalana and Marea Granate – formed by Spanish/Catalan migrants in different European cities. By conducting cross-organization and cross-city research, we analyze why and how migrants' transnational networks perceive themselves to be stronger in some cities and weaker in others. This paper demonstrates that there is no one-size-fits-all mechanism that explains perceived organizational strength in all contexts. The same urban context might provide different opportunities and constraints depending on organizational characteristics of migrant movements. Our study shows the ways that organizations' political agenda and their preferred action forms affect the perception of positionality as they navigate in different urban contexts with diverging national/local political settings, political cultures, civil society networks, and migration trajectories. The empirical data in this research stem from a content analysis of the events organized by the organizations and semi-structured in-depth interviews with organizations' representatives. This article looks into the institutional inequality in the publishing of journals related to economics, in the U.S. Most frequently, institutional affiliation of authors has been discussed in light of faculty ratings, with limited concern expressed for the overall institutional concentration of authors. Rankings of institutions in the sample of specialty journals exhibited great instability. Four of the top seven institutions on the 1960s list do not even appear on the 1970-74 tally. The number of new entrants to the list is similarly striking. The instability is to be expected because of the sampling procedure. The equivalent of one volume of each issue of thirteen journals made up the sample. From time to time concern is expressed over the relative concentration of articles written by individuals affiliated with a relatively few institutions. During 1960-69 to 1970-74, the share of the top four contributing institutions declined for each journal except the "Quarterly Journal of Economics." A possible reason for this change in the distribution of contributors is the slackening labor market for academic economist.

The year 2006 marks the 20th anniversary of the British Association for South Asian Studies (BASAS), and the organisation continues to enjoy a strong membership drawn from among South Asianists both in the United Kingdom and abroad. This is the third year that papers from the annual BASAS conference have been included in an edition of Contemporary South Asia . While neither the conference nor this edition sought to elicit participation from scholars working on particular themes, a number of cross-cutting issues do emerge within the following contributions. In particular, several of the papers focus upon the ways in which the marginalised in Indian society seek to secure their livelihoods and to express their identity. Analysis of two Miami newspapers (one daily, one weekly) reveals that both relied heavily on individuals rather than institutions as news sources in the aftermath of civil disturbances during January, 1989. While the daily used relatively similar proportions of commercial and nongovernment personnel, more than a third of the weekly paper's sources were either residents or administrative personnel and staff in government agencies. Of the 181 different sources identified, the two papers shared 27. Most of the papers' reporter information channels were through interviews. This study undertakes a bibliometric analysis, science mapping, and visualization of the consequences of marital union dissolution on the household members, including parents, children, and other relations. We also analyze the temporal trends of the scientific production and citation of authorsand sources, and institutions/countries' collaborations using data from published documents indexed on SCOPUS within the last four decades. The paper highlights five outcomes. First, there is an upward trend in scientific production on divorce and the consequences, which mirrors the increasing divorce rate in different cultures and societies. Second, the clusters of terms identify various adverse effects of divorce on the household members, including a severe economic impact on women and children. Even the dissolution of bad marriage carries significant emotional and psychological pains on the household members. Third, parental divorce can constitute an adverse childhood experience with potentially long-term consequences in some cases where the offspring cannot recover from the emotional trauma. Fourth, divorce can cause health problems, including social, behavioral, psychological, and mental health problems to the parents and children, and economic challenges. Fifth, the results using network analysis show that the consequences of divorce are not linear but multi-directional. Finally, most research output originates from countries with a high divorce rate. The study reveals upward trends in the literature production, the divorce rate across all marriage groups and social status, and religious groups. The National Archives: Historical Manuscripts Commission (NA:HMC), in its annual Accessions to Repositories exercise, collects information from over two hundred record repositories throughout the British Isles about manuscript accessions received in the previous twelve months. The information is then edited and used to produce a number of thematic digests which are distributed for publication in a number of learned journals and newsletters, as well as being made available in full on the Commission's website (www.nationalarchives.gov.uk). The information is also added to the indexes of the National Register of Archives (NRA), the central point for collecting and disseminating information about the location of manuscript sources relating to British history outside the public records. The NRA, which currently contains over 44,000 lists and catalogues of archives, can be consulted at the National Archives, Kew, Richmond TW9 4DU, United Kingdom. Questionnaire data from 137 panel chairs at the 2003 Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences meeting in Boston reveal respondent perceptions of the conference site, overall impressions of the conference, as well as panelist attendance, and the quality of information presented by panelists. The findings reveal high marks for the conference space, hotel rooms, and the city of Boston itself, resulting in an overall positive conference experience, but responses also highlight several areas of concern, including panelist attendance problems and presentation etiquette. In 2005, the American Academy of Kinesiology and Physical Education reached its 75th anniversary. In celebration of this momentous occasion, this paper examines 44 years of the Academy's history from 1940 to 1984. During the 1940s, the Academy was engaged in the war effort. Then in the 1950s, it sought to define more precisely its role and function as an organization. The 1960s saw the Academy embark on a "Body of Knowledge" project, while the emergence of subdisciplines in the 1970s moved the Academy to question its nomenclature and challenge its leadership. The next decade, it made a valiant, though unsuccessful, attempt to unify subdisciplines. Nevertheless, the American Academy of Kinesiology and Physical Education produced a distinguished record of significant achievements during this 44-year time period. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article focuses on the program of the American Psychological Association (APA) Ethics committee and American physiological Association of Graduate Students (APAGS) in the U.S. It highlights that the two associations have created an ethics prize for the graduate students for the promotions of ethics awareness and education among psychology graduate students. This paper uses the 1908 Oxford Report, a founding document for the Workers' Educational Association, as a window onto the internal contradictions of the university adult education movement, an issue that has been neglected by historians of education. Examining the early history of the WEA shows that while the movement was inspired by Oxford Idealism and set itself the aim of democratising higher education, it also drew support from people who intended to professionalise the university by introducing the principles of trained expertise and selection by merit. The confluence of Idealism and professionalism resulted in a ground-breaking but inconsistent educational programme outlined in the Oxford Report. This paper suggests that the attempt to simultaneously democratise and professionalise higher education was untenable and foreshadowed later tensions within the WEA movement. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The paper interrogates Ghana's institutional design efforts since the 1950s and argues that the longstanding political stability of the current Fourth Republic notwithstanding, a perennial feature of all regimes is the assumption that the state has the capacity and willingness to check itself. The Fourth Republic has two flaws. First, the three arms of government – executive, legislature and judiciary – must put each other in check, and society is only mainly invited to vote in four-year cycles. Society must trust the state to exhibit goodwill. The second flaw, which is the more problematic, is the apportioning of unfettered power of appointment and dismissal to the executive, which disproportionately overshadows the two other arms of government. Using extensive archival data, local media and secondary sources, the paper interrogates the power dynamics between the state and society over time. The conclusion is that neither a very strong state nor a disproportionately assertive society is good for political stability. A weak state and a dormant society are no better options either. Ghana's civil society has contributed to taming the power of a strong state, and that is the best promise for sustaining the current regime if it continues on this pathway responsibly.
