Introduction Women and underrepresented groups in medicine hold few academic leadership positions in the field of hematology/oncology. In this study, we assessed gender and race/ethnicity representation in editorial board positions in hematology/oncology journals. Materials and Methods Editorial leadership board members from 60 major journals in hematology and oncology were reviewed; 54 journals were included in the final analysis. Gender and race/ethnicity were determined based on publicly available data for Editor-in-Chief (EiC) and Second-in-Command (SiC) (including deputy, senior, or associate editors). Descriptive statistics and chi-squared were estimated. In the second phase of the study, editors were emailed a 4-item survey to self-identify their demographics. Results Out of 793 editorial board members, 72.6% were men and 27.4% were women. Editorial leadership were non-Hispanic white (71.1%) with Asian editorial board members representing the second largest majority at 22.5%. Women comprised only 15.9% of the EiC positions (90% White and 10% Asian). Women were about half as likely to be in the EiC position compared with men [pOR 0.47 (95% CI, 0.23-0.95, P =.03)]. Women represented 28.3% of SiC editorial positions. Surgical oncology had the lowest female representation at 2.3%. Conclusion Women and minorities are significantly underrepresented in leadership roles on Editorial Boards in hematology/oncology journals. Editormetrics analyses the role of editors of academic journals and their impact on the scientific publication system. Such analyses would best rely on open, structured, and machine-readable data about editors and editorial boards, which still remains rare. To address this shortcoming, the project Open Editors collects data about academic journal editors on a large scale and structures them into a single dataset. It does so by scraping the websites of 7,352 journals from 26 publishers (including predatory ones), thereby structuring publicly available information (names, affiliations, editorial roles, ORCID etc.) about 594,580 researchers. The dataset shows that journals and publishers are immensely heterogeneous in terms of editorial board sizes, regional diversity, and editorial role labels. All codes and data are made available at Zenodo , while the result is browsable at a dedicated website (https://openeditors.ooir.org). This dataset carries implications for both practical purposes of research evaluation and for meta-scientific investigations into the landscape of scholarly publications, and allows for critical inquiries regarding the representation of diversity and inclusivity across academia. This paper, while not presenting a general discussion of authority in education, attempts to uncover some of the anomalies, paradoxes and tensions in the concept. It will argue for a revaluation of authority as an educational virtue, as a form of participatory guidance that is an aid to growth. The paper intends to help provoke continued debate over our perceived educational virtues and vices. I argue that virtuous authority is authority exercised from the point of view of a larger experience and a wider horizon. If teachers' 'pedagogical imperative' is to bridge the gap between forms of knowledge and their pupils, then their practice will involve authority. I suggest here that such authority should be repositioned as participatory, immanent and democratic. As Dewey says, 'The need for authority is...constant...[I]t is the need for principles that are both stable enough and flexible enough to give direction to the processes of living in its vicissitudes and uncertainties.' In answer to this, I suggest that teachers practice their authority in order to create stable yet flexible, open and indeterminate, but not chaotic situations that combine with pupils' experiences in such a way as to enable educational growth. Authority practised as a form of participatory guidance, to pursue this Deweyan line of argument, can be 'an aid to freedom' and not freedom's enemy. This paper will argue that authority, so revalued, ought to be cultivated in our educational thought and practice. The life in print of the Greek version of Daniel is a case study in the ways in which editors and printers mediate notional texts into particular material objects shaped by their own contingencies. From antiquity onwards all MSS of the Greek Bible naturally include the 'Additions' which distinguish the longer Greek texts from the shorter Hebrew and Aramaic tradition, and this continues into the age of print: the Greek pluses are integral in the first two complete printed Greek Bibles, the Complutensian Polyglot published in 1522 and the Aldine edition of 1518–19. This all changes with Johannes Lonicerus' 1526/4 Septuagint: Lonicerus excises the 'additional' material in the Greek texts of the book of Daniel to create a totally synthetic Greek version, a Greek Bible laid over the template of the Hebrew and trimmed to fit it, yielding a Greek text that had never previously existed in Greek. This practice continues right into the modern scholarly study of the Septuagint, only ending with Tischendorf's 1850 Septuagint. Yet alongside this pattern of excision is a balancing pattern of persistence, as the motif of the Three Hebrews singing and praying in the fire proves surprisingly difficult to eradicate. Fakrul Alam, an academic, editor, essayist, and critic, is one of the leading translators of Bengali literature. With more than four decades of teaching experience at Dhaka University, Bangladesh, where he is currently Director of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Research Institute for Peace and Liberty, he has contributed widely to research and translation. His areas of research include, among others, colonial and postcolonial literatures, South Asian literature, and translation studies. Well known as a translator of Jibanananda Das (1899–1954), a great poet of Bengali literature, and Rabindranath Tagore (1861–1941), a Nobel Prize winning poet and writer, Alam has also translated works of various genres, including nonfiction and song-lyrics. His translations of the works of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the Father of the Nation, famously called 'Bangabandhu,' Friend of Bengal, are remarkable and internationally acclaimed. In this interview, Alam has given an account of his rich body of translated works as well as his motivations to venture into translation. Moreover, he has addressed various issues of translation and translation studies along with his long journey as a translator from a postcolonial nation like Bangladesh. The interview, above all, focuses on Alam's career as a translator, his reflections on literary translation, the challenges and prospects of Bengali literature in translation into English, his own individual strategies and techniques of translation, and his current and future translation projects. This essay considers the theme of apology and what happens when the demand for apology is subverted, using the Vacuum newspaper as a case study. I consider the argument that played out in 2004 between the Vacuum and Belfast City Council, which partially funded its production. The Vacuum's publication of themed double issues entitled 'God' and 'Satan' provoked the ire of conservative Council Members who proposed that the publication's editors must apologize to Members of the Council and the citizens of Belfast for the offence they had caused. In so doing, the publication secured its place as one of the most controversial Northern Irish print publications of recent years. In their response to the Council's demand – a themed 'Sorry' issue – the Vacuum's editors struck a defiant tone. Media discourse around the 'Sorry' issue of the Vacuum has centred on the element of public spectacle it generated, but this essay represents a reconsideration of its importance. I read it as informed by an ethics of resistance. By refusing to be co-opted into making a sham apology, the 'Sorry' issue illuminates the crucial importance of apology in the place and time of its production – in a country still reeling from the violence of the Troubles. We investigate the role that political ideology plays in the selection process for articles in law reviews. To do so, we match data on the political ideology of student editors from 15 top law reviews from 1990 to 2005 to data on the political ideology of the authors of accepted articles. We find that law reviews with a higher share of conservative editors accept a higher share of articles written by conservative authors. We then investigate potential explanations for this pattern. One possibility is that editors have a preference for publishing articles written by authors that share their ideology. Another possibility is that editors are objectively better at assessing the contribution of articles written by authors that share their ideology. There appears an obvious fit between the application of 'social media' technologies to the making of scholarly editions in digital form and the markedly collaborative nature of the typical digital humanities project. Accordingly, it may be argued that the model of the collaborative project-based edition need only to be extended, to become 'social'. This article questions that thesis, demonstrating the problems that can arise with collaborative projects applying digital methodologies to scholarly work through analysis of the Shakespeare Quartos and the European Virtual Museum Transnational Network projects and arguing that the term 'collaboration' needs critical examination. Indeed, to the extent that 'collaboration' may be closed, and may serve narrow scholarly purposes, it can be the antithesis of 'social'. In place of project-based collaboration, this essay proposes that we see 'social' editions as grounded in communities, not in collaboration, and that the principle upon which they should be built is (following Shirky) 'design for generosity'. This implies a different role for the editors and scholars from the academy: rather than the leaders of collaborations, we may become key participants in, and enablers of, communities. In turn, this mandates a loss of control: generosity means allowing others to use what is given freely, including in ways not foreseen, and even opposed, by those who created the data. For academics who are used to identifying control with assurance of quality, this is a difficult step.
