Abstract
- The article explores the origins of the player king and player queen speech prefixes in the play "Hamlet" by William Shakespeare. It mentions the lack of distinction in the mousetrap scene between the paratexts used to identify Claudius and the player king, and Gertrude and the player queen. It cites the efforts of modern editors to distinguish between the characters. The only modern edition that correctly attributes textual innovations is said to be the online variorum at Hamletworks.org.
