Neuromorphic systems are a viable alternative to conventional systems for real-time tasks with constrained resources. Their low power consumption, compact hardware realization, and low-latency response characteristics are the key ingredients of such systems. Furthermore, the event-based signal processing approach can be exploited for reducing the computational load and avoiding data loss due to its inherently sparse representation of sensed data and adaptive sampling time. In event-based systems, the information is commonly coded by the number of spikes within a specific temporal window. However, the temporal information of event-based signals can be difficult to extract when using rate coding. In this work, we present a novel digital implementation of the model, called time difference encoder (TDE), for temporal encoding on event-based signals, which translates the time difference between two consecutive input events into a burst of output events. The number of output events along with the time between them encodes the temporal information. The proposed model has been implemented as a digital circuit with a configurable time constant, allowing it to be used in a wide range of sensing tasks that require the encoding of the time difference between events, such as optical flow-based obstacle avoidance, sound source localization, and gas source localization. This proposed bioinspired model offers an alternative to the Jeffress model for the interaural time difference estimation, which is validated in this work with a sound source lateralization proof-of-concept system. The model was simulated and implemented on a field-programmable gate array (FPGA), requiring 122 slice registers of hardware resources and less than 1 mW of power consumption.

Prostate cancer is currently one of the most commonly-diagnosed types of cancer among males. Although its death rate has dropped in the last decades, it is still a major concern and one of the leading causes of cancer death. Prostate biopsy is a test that confirms or excludes the presence of cancer in the tissue. Samples extracted from biopsies are processed and digitized, obtaining gigapixel-resolution images called wholeslide images, which are analyzed by pathologists. Automated intelligent systems could be useful for helping pathologists in this analysis, reducing fatigue and making the routine process faster. In this work, a novel Deep Learning based computer-aided diagnosis system is presented. This system is able to analyze wholeslide histology images that are first patch-sampled and preprocessed using different filters, including a novel patch-scoring algorithm that removes worthless areas from the tissue. Then, patches are used as input to a custom Convolutional Neural Network, which gives a report showing malignant regions on a heatmap. The impact of applying a stain-normalization process to the patches is also analyzed in order to reduce color variability between different scanners. After training the network with a 3-fold cross-validation method, 99.98% accuracy, 99.98% F1 score and 0.999 AUC are achieved on a separate test set. The computation time needed to obtain the heatmap of a whole-slide image is, on average, around 15 s. Our custom network outperforms other state-of-the-art works in terms of computational complexity for a binary classification task between normal and malignant prostate whole-slide images at patch level.

In this live demonstration we exploit the use of a serial link for fast asynchronous communication in massively parallel processing platforms connected to a DVS for realtime implementation of bio-inspired vision processing on spiking neural networks.

Address-Event-Representation (AER) is a widely extended asynchronous technique for interchanging “neural spikes” among different hardware elements in Neuromorphic Systems. Conventional AER links use parallel physical wires together with a pair of handshaking signals (Request and Acknowledge). Here we present a fully serial implementation using bidirectional SATA connectors with a pair of LVDS (low voltage differential signaling) wires for each direction. The proposed implementation can multiplex a number of conventional parallel AER links per LVDS physical connection. It uses flow control, clock correction, and byte alignment techniques to transmit 32-bit address events reliably over multiplexed serial connections. The setup has been tested using commercial Spartan6 FPGAs reaching a maximum event transmission speed of 75Meps (Mega Events per second) for 32-bit events at 3.0Gbps line data rate.

Animals combine various sensory cues with previously acquired knowledge to safely travel towards a target destination. In close analogy to biological systems, we propose a neuromorphic system which decides, based on auditory and visual input, how to reach a sound source without collisions. The development of this sensory integration system, which identifies the shortest possible path, is a key achievement towards autonomous robotics. The proposed neuromorphic system comprises two event based sensors (the eDVS for vision and the NAS for audition) and the SpiNNaker processor. Open loop experiments were performed to evaluate the system performances. In the presence of acoustic stimulation alone, the heading direction points to the direction of the sound source with a Pearson correlation coefficient of 0.89. When visual input is introduced into the network the heading direction always points at the direction of null optical flow closest to the sound source. Hence, the sensory integration network is able to find the shortest path to the sound source while avoiding obstacles. This work shows that a simple, task dependent mapping of sensory information can lead to highly complex and robust decisions.

Spiking convolutional neural networks have become a novel approach for machine vision tasks, due to the latency to process an input stimulus from a scene, and the low power consumption of these kind of solutions. Event-based systems only perform sum operations instead of sum of products of framebased systems. In this work an upgrade of a neuromorphic event-based convolution accelerator for SCNN, which is able to perform multiple layers with different kernel sizes, is presented. The system has a latency per layer from 1.44 μs to 9.98μs for kernel sizes from 1x1 to 7x7.

Dynamic Vision Sensor (DVS) pixels produce an asynchronous variable-rate address-event output that represents brightness changes at the pixel. Since these sensors produce frame-free output, they are ideal for real-time dynamic vision applications with real-time latency and power system constraints. Event-based ltering algorithms have been proposed to post-process the asynchronous event output to reduce sensor noise, extract low level features, and track objects, among others. These postprocessing algorithms help to increase the performance and accuracy of further processing for tasks such as classi cation using spike-based learning (ie. ConvNets), stereo vision, and visually-servoed robots, etc. This paper presents an FPGA-based library of these postprocessing event-based algorithms with implementation details; speci cally background activity (noise) ltering, pixel masking, object motion detection and object tracking. The latencies of these lters on the Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) platform are below 300ns with an average latency reduction of 188% (maximum of 570%) over the software versions running on a desktop PC CPU. This open-source event-based lter IP library for FPGA has been tested on two different platforms and scenarios using different synthesis and implementation tools for Lattice and Xilinx vendors.

Convolutional neural networks (CNNs) have become the dominant neural network architecture for solving many stateof- the-art (SOA) visual processing tasks. Even though Graphical Processing Units (GPUs) are most often used in training and deploying CNNs, their power efficiency is less than 10 GOp/s/W for single-frame runtime inference.We propose a flexible and efficient CNN accelerator architecture called NullHop that implements SOA CNNs useful for low-power and low-latency application scenarios. NullHop exploits the sparsity of neuron activations in CNNs to accelerate the computation and reduce memory requirements. The flexible architecture allows high utilization of available computing resources across kernel sizes ranging from 1x1 to 7x7. NullHop can process up to 128 input and 128 output feature maps per layer in a single pass. We implemented the proposed architecture on a Xilinx Zynq FPGA platform and present results showing how our implementation reduces external memory transfers and compute time in five different CNNs ranging from small ones up to the widely known large VGG16 and VGG19 CNNs. Post-synthesis simulations using Mentor Modelsim in a 28nm process with a clock frequency of 500MHz show that the VGG19 network achieves over 450GOp/s. By exploiting sparsity, NullHop achieves an efficiency of 368%, maintains over 98% utilization of the MAC units, and achieves a power efficiency of over 3TOp/s/W in a core area of 6.3mm2. As further proof of NullHop’s usability, we interfaced its FPGA implementation with a neuromorphic event camera for real time interactive demonstrations.

This live demonstration presents an audio-guided neuromorphic robot: from a Neuromorphic Auditory Sensor (NAS) to locomotion using Spiking Central Pattern Generators (sCPGs). Several gaits are generated by sCPGs implemented on a SpiNNaker board. The output of these sCPGs is sent in a real-time manner to an Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) board using an AER-to-SpiNN interface. The control of the hexapod robot joints is performed by the FPGA board. The robot behavior can be changed in real-time by means of the NAS. The audio information is sent to the SpiNNaker board which classifies it using a Spiking Neural Network (SNN). Thus, the input sound will activate a specific gait pattern which will eventually modify the behavior of the robot.

In this demonstration a spiking neural network architecture for vision recognition using an FPGA spiking convolution processor, based on leaky integrate and fire neurons (LIF) and a SpiNNaker board is presented. The network has been trained with Poker-DVS dataset in order to classify the four different card symbols. The spiking convolution processor extracts features from images in form of spikes, computes by one layer of 64 convolutions. These features are sent to an OKAERtool board that converts from AER to 2-7 protocol to be classified by a spiking neural network deployed on a SpiNNaker platform.

This paper presents a new current attenuator circuit to scale down the inference currents in memristor based crossbars that drive integrate-and-fire neurons, which subsequently allows to reduce the size of integrating capacitors by several orders of magnitude, making IC integration possible. The proposed circuit uses a linear switch to divide the inference current and scale it down by a factor of about 104. The proposed attenuator has been designed in 130nm CMOS technology. Simulation results considering noise, process and temperature variations are shown to validate the presented approach.

Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) show great performance in several data analysis tasks including visual and auditory applications. However, direct implementation of these algorithms without considering the sparsity of data requires high processing power, consume vast amounts of energy and suffer from scalability issues. Inspired by biology, one of the methods which can reduce power consumption and allow scalability in the implementation of neural networks is asynchronous processing and communication by means of action potentials, so-called spikes. In this work, we use the wellknown sigma-delta quantization method and introduce an easy and straightforward solution to convert an Artificial Neural Network to a Spiking Neural Network which can be implemented asynchronously in a neuromorphic platform. Briefly, we used asynchronous spikes to communicate the quantized output activations of the neurons. Despite the fact that our proposed mechanism is simple and applicable to a wide range of different ANNs, it outperforms the state-of-the-art implementations from the accuracy and energy consumption point of view. Inference of Deep Neural Networks for stream signal (Video/Audio) processing in edge devices is still challenging. Unlike the most state of the art inference engines which are efficient for static signals, our brain is optimized for real-time dynamic signal processing. We believe one important feature of the brain (asynchronous state-full processing) is the key to its excellence in this domain. In this work, we show how asynchronous processing with state-full neurons allows exploitation of the existing sparsity in natural signals. This paper explains three different types of sparsity and proposes an inference algorithm which exploits all types of sparsities in the execution of already trained networks. Our experiments in three different applications (Handwritten digit recognition, Autonomous Steering and Hand-Gesture recognition) show that this model of inference reduces the number of required operations for sparse input data by a factor of one to two orders of magnitudes. Additionally, due to fully asynchronous processing this type of inference can be run on fully distributed and scalable neuromorphic hardware platforms.

The combination of Spike Timing Dependent Plasticity (STDP) and latency coding used in a spiking neural network has been shown to learn hierarchical features. In this paper we propose a new way to classify images using an SVM. Prototype images are built from the weights learned in an unsupervised manner using STDP. The prototype images are cross correlated with the input image and the peak of the cross correlation with each prototype image is used as additional features for an SVM. The network, demonstrated on the MNIST data set, achieves 99.15% testing accuracy which is the best reported accuracy for a SNN with unsupervised training.

Many advances have been made in the eld of computer vision. Several recent research trends have focused on mimicking human vision by using a stereo vision system. In multi-camera systems, a calibration process is usually implemented to improve the results accuracy. However, these systems generate a large amount of data to be processed; therefore, a powerful computer is required and, in many cases, this cannot be done in real time. Neuromorphic Engineering attempts to create bio-inspired systems that mimic the information processing that takes place in the human brain. This information is encoded using pulses (or spikes) and the generated systems are much simpler (in computational operations and resources), which allows them to perform similar tasks with much lower power consumption, thus these processes can be developed over specialized hardware with real-time processing. In this work, a bio-inspired stereovision system is presented, where a calibration mechanism for this system is implemented and evaluated using several tests. The result is a novel calibration technique for a neuromorphic stereo vision system, implemented over specialized hardware (FPGA - Field-Programmable Gate Array), which allows obtaining reduced latencies on hardware implementation for stand-alone systems, and working in real time.

Many FPGAs vendors have recently included embedded processors in their devices, like Xilinx with ARM-Cortex A cores, together with programmable logic cells. These devices are known as Programmable System on Chip (PSoC). Their ARM cores (embedded in the processing system or PS) communicates with the programmable logic cells (PL) using ARM-standard AXI buses. In this paper we analyses the performance of exhaustive data transfers between PS and PL for a Xilinx Zynq FPGA in a co-design real scenario for Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) accelerator, which processes, in dedicated hardware, a stream of visual information from a neuromorphic visual sensor for classification. In the PS side, a Linux operating system is running, which recollects visual events from the neuromorphic sensor into a normalized frame, and then it transfers these frames to the accelerator of multi-layered CNNs, and read results, using an AXI-DMA bus in a per-layer way. As these kind of accelerators try to process information as quick as possible, data bandwidth becomes critical and maintaining a good balanced data throughput rate requires some considerations. We present and evaluate several data partitioning techniques to improve the balance between RX and TX transfer and two different ways of transfers management: through a polling routine at the userlevel of the OS, and through a dedicated interrupt-based kernellevel driver. We demonstrate that for longer enough packets, the kernel-level driver solution gets better timing in computing a CNN classification example. Main advantage of using kernel-level driver is to have safer solutions and to have tasks scheduling in the OS to manage other important processes for our application, like frames collection from sensors and their normalization.

Neural networks algorithms are commonly used to recognize patterns from different data sources such as audio or vision. In image recognition, Convolutional Neural Networks are one of the most effective techniques due to the high accuracy they achieve. This kind of algorithms require billions of addition and multiplication operations over all pixels of an image. However, it is possible to reduce the number of operations using other computer vision techniques rather than frame-based ones, e.g. neuromorphic frame-free techniques. There exists many neuromorphic vision sensors that detect pixels that have changed their luminosity. In this study, an event-based convolution engine for FPGA is presented. This engine models an array of leaky integrate and fire neurons. It is able to apply different kernel sizes, from 1x1 to 7x7, which are computed row by row, with a maximum number of 64 different convolution kernels. The design presented is able to process 64 feature maps of 7x7 with a latency of 8.98 s.

We have developed a fully configurable event-driven convolutional module with refractory period mechanism that can be used to implement arbitrary Convolutional Neural Networks (ConvNets) on FPGAs following a 2D array structure. Using this module, we have implemented in a Spartan6 FPGA a 4-layer ConvNet with 22 convolutional modules trained for poker card symbol recognition. It has been tested with a stimulus where 40 poker cards were observed by a Dynamic Vision Sensor (DVS) in 1s time. A traffic control mechanism is implemented to downsample high speed input stimuli while keeping spatio-temporal correlation. For slow stimulus play back, a 96% recognition rate is achieved with a power consumption of 0.85mW. At maximum play back speed, the recognition rate is still above 63% when less than 20% of the input events are processed.

Neuromorphic Computing or Spiking (also called Event-Driven) Neural Systems are becoming of high interest as they potentially allow for lower power hardware computing platforms, where power consumption is data driven. Traditional approaches (both in software and in hardware), which are not data driven, rely on generic system state updates, consuming a fixed amount of computing resources at each step, independent on the data itself. In neuromorphic spiking or (event-driven) computing systems power is consumed (in principle) if new data is transferred, either at the system input, system output, or internally between computing nodes. One such neuromorphic event-driven computing platform is the scalable SpiNNaker system, which is aimed for a million ARM core platform, capable of emulating in the order of a billion neurons in real time. An important practical drawback of the platform is the long time it takes to download to the hardware a given computational architecture. This step has to be repeated even if one wants to update a set of parameters. Here we present a method for updating internal parameters without downloading again the full architecture, by adding special neurons into the computing architecture which when they spike change given parameters. This allows to download the computing architecture only once to the SpiNNaker platform, and then take advantage of its highly efficient communication network to command specific parameter changes. This allows for intensive parameter searches in a more efficient manner.

Event-Driven computation is attracting growing attention among researchers for several reasons. On one hand, the availability of new bio-inspired retina-like vision sensors that provide spiking outputs, like the Dynamic Vision Sensor (DVS) make it possible to demonstrate energy efficient and highspeed complex vision tasks. On the other hand, the emergence of abundant new nanoscale devices that operate as tunable two-terminal resistive elements, which when operated through dynamic pulsing techniques emulate learning and processing in the brain, promise an explosion of highly compact energy efficient neuromorphic event-driven applications. In this paper we focus for the first time on a high-level cognitive task, namely scene context classification, performed by event-driven computations and using real sensory data from a DVS camera.

Nowadays spike-based brain processing emulation is taking off. Several EU and others worldwide projects are demonstrating this, like SpiNNaker, BrainScaleS, FACETS, or NeuroGrid. The larger the brain process emulation on silicon is, the higher the communication performance of the hosting platforms has to be. Many times the bottleneck of these system implementations is not on the performance inside a chip or a board, but in the communication between boards. This paper describes a novel modular Address-Event-Representation (AER) FPGA-based (Spartan6) infrastructure PCB (the AER-Node board) with 2.5Gbps LVDS high speed serial links over SATA cables that offers a peak performance of 32-bit 62.5Meps (Mega events per second) on board-to-board communications. The board allows back compatibility with parallel AER devices supporting up to x2 28-bit parallel data with asynchronous handshake. These boards also allow modular expansion functionality through several daughter boards. The paper is focused on describing in detail the LVDS serial interface and presenting its performance.

This paper presents a new DVS sensor with one order of magnitude improved contrast sensitivity over previous reported DVSs. This sensor has been applied to a bio-inspired event-based binocular system that performs 3D event-driven reconstruction of a scene. Events from two DVS sensors are matched by using precise timing information of their ocurrence. To improve matching reliability, satisfaction of epipolar geometry constraint is required, and simultaneously available information on the orientation is used as an additional matching constraint.

Event-Driven vision sensing is a new way of sensing visual reality in a frame-free manner. This is, the vision sensor (camera) is not capturing a sequence of still frames, as in conventional video and computer vision systems. In Event-Driven sensors each pixel autonomously and asynchronously decides when to send its address out. This way, the sensor output is a continuous stream of address events representing reality dynamically continuously and without constraining to frames. In this paper we present an Event-Driven Convolution Module for computing 2D convolutions on such event streams. The Convolution Module has been designed to assemble many of them for building modular and hierarchical Convolutional Neural Networks for robust shape and pose invariant object recognition. The Convolution Module has multi-kernel capability. This is, it will select the convolution kernel depending on the origin of the event. A proof-of-concept test prototype has been fabricated in a 0.35 m CMOS process and extensive experimental results are provided. The Convolution Processor has also been combined with an Event-Driven Dynamic Vision Sensor (DVS) for high-speed recognition examples. The chip can discriminate propellers rotating at 2 k revolutions per second, detect symbols on a 52 card deck when browsing all cards in 410 ms, or detect and follow the center of a phosphor oscilloscope trace rotating at 5 KHz.

Several studies have focused on classifying behavioral patterns in wildlife and captive species to monitor their activities and so to understanding the interactions of animals and control their welfare, for biological research or commercial purposes. The use of pattern recognition techniques, statistical methods and Overall Dynamic Body Acceleration (ODBA) are well known for animal behavior recognition tasks. The reconfigurability and scalability of these methods are not trivial, since a new study has to be done when changing any of the configuration parameters. In recent years, the use of Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) has increased for this purpose due to the fact that they can be easily adapted when new animals or patterns are required. In this context, a comparative study between a theoretical research is presented, where statistical and spectral analyses were performed and an embedded implementation of an ANN on a smart collar device was placed on semi-wild animals. This system is part of a project whose main aim is to monitor wildlife in real time using a wireless sensor network infrastructure. Different classifiers were tested and compared for three different horse gaits. Experimental results in a real time scenario achieved an accuracy of up to 90.7%, proving the efficiency of the embedded ANN implementation.

Despite being well established in robotics, classical motor controllers have several disadvantages: they pose a high computational load, therefore requiring powerful devices, they are not easy to tune and they are not suited for neuroprosthetics. In contrast, bio-inspired controller do not transform the output of the controller therefore no delays are introduced and a smooth response is achieved; they also have a high scalability. Finally, the most important feature of bio-inspired controllers is that they could integrate learning features to make them adaptable to new tasks within the same hardware robotic platform. We present the model and simulation of a spiking neural network for low-level motor control. The proposed neural network acts as a motor controller and produces pulsed signals which can be directly interfaced with commercial DC motors. The simulated network is compatible with neuromorphic VLSI implementation and paves the way to the implementation bio-inspired motor controller which are compact, low power, scalable and compatible with neuroprosthetic. The network presented is inspired by the current knowledge about biological motor control: it comprises alpha motoneuron for driving the motor and spindle populations to provide the feedback and close the loop. The spikes from the motoneuron population are time lengthen to a fixed amount of time and supplied to the simulated motor: Pulse Frequency Modulation (PFM) modulation is used. This paper presents the software simulations using the Brian simulator for a position controller. Our controller is a first step toward a novel bioinspired motor control approach suitable for robotics as well as neuroprosthetic.

This paper presents a new architecture, design flow, and field-programmable gate array (FPGA) implementation analysis of a neuromorphic binaural auditory sensor, designed completely in the spike domain. Unlike digital cochleae that decompose audio signals using classical digital signal processing techniques, the model presented in this paper processes information directly encoded as spikes using pulse frequency modulation and provides a set of frequency-decomposed audio information using an address-event representation interface. In this case, a systematic approach to design led to a generic process for building, tuning, and implementing audio frequency decomposers with different features, facilitating synthesis with custom features. This allows researchers to implement their own parameterized neuromorphic auditory systems in a low-cost FPGA in order to study the audio processing and learning activity that takes place in the brain. In this paper, we present a 64-channel binaural neuromorphic auditory system implemented in a Virtex-5 FPGA using a commercial development board. The system was excited with a diverse set of audio signals in order to analyze its response and characterize its features. The neuromorphic auditory system response times and frequencies are reported. The experimental results of the proposed system implementation with 64-channel stereo are: a frequency range between 9.6 Hz and 14.6 kHz (adjustable), a maximum output event rate of 2.19 Mevents/s, a power consumption of 29.7 mW, the slices requirements of 11 141, and a system clock frequency of 27 MHz.

In this demonstration we present a spiking neural network architecture for audio samples classification using SpiNNaker. The network consists of different leaky integrate-and-fire neuron layers. The connections between them are trained using firing rate based algorithms. Tests use sets of pure tones with frequencies that range from 130.813 to 1396.91 Hz. Audio signals coming from the computer are converted to spikes using a Neuromorphic Auditory Sensor and, after that, this information is sent to the SpiNNaker board through a PCB that translates from AER to 2-of-7 protocol. The classification output obtained in the spiking neural network deployed on SpiNNaker is then shown in the computer screen. Different levels of random noise are added to the original audio signals in order to test the robustness of the classification system.

In this paper, a chip that performs real-time image convolutions with programmable kernels of arbitrary shape is presented. The chip is a first experimental prototype of reduced size to validate the implemented circuits and system level techniques. The convolution processing is based on the address–event-representation (AER) technique, which is a spike-based biologically inspired image and video representation technique that favors communication bandwidth for pixels with more information. As a first test prototype, a pixel array of 16x16 has been implemented with programmable kernel size of up to 16x16. The chip has been fabricated in a standard 0.35- m complimentary metal–oxide–semiconductor (CMOS) process. The technique also allows to process larger size images by assembling 2-D arrays of such chips. Pixel operation exploits low-power mixed analog–digital circuit techniques. Because of the low currents involved (down to nanoamperes or even picoamperes), an important amount of pixel area is devoted to mismatch calibration. The rest of the chip uses digital circuit techniques, both synchronous and asynchronous. The fabricated chip has been thoroughly tested, both at the pixel level and at the system level. Specific computer interfaces have been developed for generating AER streams from conventional computers and feeding them as inputs to the convolution chip, and for grabbing AER streams coming out of the convolution chip and storing and analyzing them on computers. Extensive experimental results are provided. At the end of this paper, we provide discussions and results on scaling up the approach for larger pixel arrays and multilayer cortical AER systems.

In this paper we briefly summarize the fundamental properties of spike events processing applied to artificial vision systems. This sensing and processing technology is capable of very high speed throughput, because it does not rely on sensing and processing sequences of frames, and because it allows for complex hierarchically structured cortical-like layers for sophisticated processing. The paper includes a few examples that have demonstrated the potential of this technology for highspeed vision processing, such as a multilayer event processing network of 5 sequential cortical-like layers, and a recognition system capable of discriminating propellers of different shape rotating at 5000 revolutions per second (300000 revolutions per minute).

A high speed sample image processing application using AER-based components is presented. The setup objective is to distinguish between two propellers of different shape rotating at high speed (around 1000 revolutions/sec) to show event-based systems capabilities in high speed applications. Event-based schemes allow the most relevant information to propagate faster through the system layers. So image processing is sped up because a rough result may be available when only a little part of the input has arrived. This setup is much faster than the conventional frame-based image processing systems because they would need to process more than 10kFrames/s to do the same task proposed here, whereas only few events are required with the event based technique

Address-event-representation (AER) is a communication protocol for transferring asynchronous events between VLSI chips, originally developed for bio-inspired processing systems (for example, image processing). Such systems may consist of a complicated hierarchical structure with many chips that transmit data among them in real time, while performing some processing (for example, convolutions). To develop AER based systems for image processing it is very convenient to have available some kind of tool for generating AER streams from on-computer stored images. In this paper we present a hardware method for generating AER streams with Poisson statistics in real time from a sequence of images stored in a computer's memory. We quantify that the events generated follow a Poisson distribution using the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test.
