Objective: This cross-sectional study aimed to determine the epidemiology of olfactory and gustatory dysfunctions related to COVID-19 in China., Methods: This study was conducted by 45 tertiary Grade-A hospitals in China. Online and offline questionnaire data were obtained from patients infected with COVID-19 between December 28, 2022, and February 21, 2023. The collected information included basic demographics, medical history, smoking and drinking history, vaccination history, changes in olfactory and gustatory functions before and after infection, and other postinfection symptoms, as well as the duration and improvement status of olfactory and gustatory disorders., Results: Complete questionnaires were obtained from 35,566 subjects. The overall incidence of olfactory and taste dysfunction was 67.75%. Being female or being a cigarette smoker increased the likelihood of developing olfactory and taste dysfunction. Having received four doses of the vaccine or having good oral health or being a alcohol drinker decreased the risk of such dysfunction. Before infection, the average olfactory and taste VAS scores were 8.41 and 8.51, respectively; after infection, they decreased to 3.69 and 4.29 and recovered to 5.83 and 6.55 by the time of the survey. The median duration of dysosmia and dysgeusia was 15 and 12 days, respectively, with 0.5% of patients having symptoms lasting for more than 28 days. The overall self-reported improvement rate was 59.16%. Recovery was higher in males, never smokers, those who received two or three vaccine doses, and those that had never experienced dental health issues, or chronic accompanying symptoms., Conclusions: The incidence of dysosmia and dysgeusia following infection with the SARS-CoV-2 virus is high in China. A new species of Leptobrachella , L.wumingensis sp. nov. , was described from the Damingshan National Nature Reserve, Wuming District, Nanning City, Guangxi, China based on morphological, molecular and bioacoustic data. Phylogenetic analysis of 16S mtDNA fragments revealed that the new species is closely related to L.damingshanensis . Uncorrected p -distances between the new species and all homologous DNA sequences available for the 16S gene of Leptobrachella are greater than 7.1%. Morphologically, L.wumingensis sp. nov. differs from its congeners in several ways, including a medium body size (SVL 26.0-26.7 mm in males, 30.6-34.8 mm in females), lack of toe webbing and lateral fringes, shagreened and granular dorsal surface, pale brown dorsum with darker brown markings, iris bicolored, with the upper half copper and fading to silver in the lower half, and the presence of small irregular black spots and tangerine tubercles on the flanks. Objective: This cross-sectional investigation aimed to determine the incidence, clinical characteristics, prognosis, and related risk factors of olfactory and gustatory dysfunctions related to infection with the SARS-CoV-2 Omicron strain in mainland China. Methods: Data of patients with SARS-CoV-2 from December 28, 2022, to February 21, 2023, were collected through online and offline questionnaires from 45 tertiary hospitals and one center for disease control and prevention in mainland China. The questionnaire included demographic information, previous health history, smoking and alcohol drinking, SARS-CoV-2 vaccination, olfactory and gustatory function before and after infection, other symptoms after infection, as well as the duration and improvement of olfactory and gustatory dysfunction. The self-reported olfactory and gustatory functions of patients were evaluated using the Olfactory VAS scale and Gustatory VAS scale. Results: A total of 35 566 valid questionnaires were obtained, revealing a high incidence of olfactory and taste dysfunctions related to infection with the SARS-CoV-2 Omicron strain (67.75%). Females(χ2=367.013, P <0.001) and young people(χ2=120.210, P <0.001) were more likely to develop these dysfunctions. Gender( OR =1.564, 95% CI : 1.487-1.645), SARS-CoV-2 vaccination status ( OR =1.334, 95% CI : 1.164-1.530), oral health status ( OR =0.881, 95% CI : 0.839-0.926), smoking history ( OR =1.152, 95% CI =1.080-1.229), and drinking history ( OR =0.854, 95% CI : 0.785-0.928) were correlated with the occurrence of olfactory and taste dysfunctions related to SARS-CoV-2(above P <0.001). 44.62% (4 391/9 840) of the patients who had not recovered their sense of smell and taste also suffered from nasal congestion, runny nose, and 32.62% (3 210/9 840) suffered from dry mouth and sore throat. The improvement of olfactory and taste functions was correlated with the persistence of accompanying symptoms(χ2=10.873, P =0.001). The average score of olfactory and taste VAS scale was 8.41 and 8.51 respectively before SARS-CoV-2 infection, but decreased to3.69 and 4.29 respectively after SARS-CoV-2 infection, and recovered to 5.83and 6.55 respectively at the time of the survey. The median duration of olfactory and gustatory dysfunctions was 15 days and 12 days, respectively, with 0.5% (121/24 096) of patients experiencing these dysfunctions for more than 28 days. The overall self-reported improvement rate of smell and taste dysfunctions was 59.16% (14 256/24 096). Gender( OR =0.893, 95% CI : 0.839-0.951), SARS-CoV-2 vaccination status ( OR =1.334, 95%CI: 1.164-1.530), history of head and facial trauma( OR =1.180, 95% CI : 1.036-1.344, P =0.013), nose ( OR =1.104, 95% CI : 1.042-1.171, P =0.001) and oral ( OR =1.162, 95% CI : 1.096-1.233) health status, smoking history( OR =0.765, 95% CI : 0.709-0.825), and the persistence of accompanying symptoms ( OR =0.359, 95% CI : 0.332-0.388) were correlated with the recovery of olfactory and taste dysfunctions related to SARS-CoV-2 (above P <0.001 except for the indicated values). Conclusion: The incidence of olfactory and taste dysfunctions related to infection with the SARS-CoV-2 Omicron strain is high in mainland China, with females and young people more likely to develop these dysfunctions. Active and effective intervention measures may be required for cases that persist for a long time. The recovery of olfactory and taste functions is influenced by several factors, including gender, SARS-CoV-2 vaccination status, history of head and facial trauma, nasal and oral health status, smoking history, and persistence of accompanying symptoms.

Background: The impact of lymphocyte-C-reactive protein ratio (LCR) on clinical outcomes has been reported in liver cancer such as hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (ICC), but the results remain inconsistent. Methods: We searched PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, Embase and Cochrane Library databases for relevant studies evaluating the association of LCR with survival outcomes and clinicopathological parameters. Results: Eight studies with 4316 patients were included in this meta-analysis. Low LCR was significantly associated with poor overall survival, disease-free survival/relapse-free survival and disease progression clinicopathological parameters in patients with HCC or ICC. Conclusion:  Low pretreatment LCR was an adverse prognostic indicator in patients with HCC or ICC. In addition, it was correlated with clinicopathological parameters indicating a higher stage of malignancy.

Background: Chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) is a common inflammatory disease in otolaryngology, mainly manifested as nasal congestion, nasal discharge, facial pain/pressure, and smell disorder. CRS with nasal polyps (CRSwNP), an important phenotype of CRS, has a high recurrence rate even after receiving corticosteroids and/or functional endoscopic sinus surgery. In recent years, clinicians have focused on the application of biological agents in CRSwNP. However, it has not reached a consensus on the timing and selection of biologics for the treatment of CRS so far., Summary: We reviewed the previous studies of biologics in CRS and summarized the indications, contraindications, efficacy assessment, prognosis, and adverse effects of biologics. Also, we evaluated the treatment response and adverse reactions of dupilumab, omalizumab, and mepolizumab in the management of CRS and made recommendations., Key Messages: Dupilumab, omalizumab, and mepolizumab have been approved for the treatment of CRSwNP by the US Food and Drug Administration. Type 2 and eosinophilic inflammation, need for systemic steroids or contraindication to systemic steroids, significantly impaired quality of life, anosmia, and comorbid asthma are required for the use of biologics. Based on current evidence, dupilumab has the prominent advantage in improving quality of life and reducing the risk of comorbid asthma in CRSwNP among the approved monoclonal antibodies. Most patients tolerate biological agents well in general with few major or severe adverse effects. Biologics have provided more options for severe uncontrolled CRSwNP patients or patients who refuse to have surgery. A new species of music frog, Nidiranaguibeiensis sp. nov. , is described from northern Guangxi, China. Based on two mtDNA fragments analyzed, phylogenetic trees reveal that N.guibeiensis sp. nov. is most closely related to N.leishanensis . However, the new species can be identified by conspicuous diagnostic morphological characteristics as well as bioacoustics. In contrast to the known Nidirana species, the advertisement calls of the new species can be divided into three types, calls with one, two, and three notes. In addition, the new species has nest construction behavior, which is inconsistent with N.leishanensis . Two new aspidosperma-type monoterpenoid indole alkaloids, 16- O -methylvoafinine ( 1 ) and 14,15- diepi -voafinidine ( 2 ) were isolated from the aerial parts of Ervatamia officinalis . Their structures were established by comprehensive spectroscopic analysis including 1D and 2D NMR, HR-ESI-MS, and electronic circular dichroism calculation. The isolated compounds were evaluated for cytotoxic activities against HepG2, MCF-7, and A549 cell lines by CCK-8 assay.

Objective: By analyzing the expression of pepsin in nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) tissues, to investigate the correlation between laryngeal reflux (LPR) and NPC, as well as the effect of LPR on the quality of life of patients with NPC after radiotherapy. Methods: A total of 133 patients with NPC who underwent radiotherapy at the Department of Otorhinolaryngology of the Affiliated Hospital of Guizhou Medical University and the Affiliated Cancer Hospital of Guizhou Medical University from 2005 to 2019 were enrolled consecutively, including 90 males and 43 females, aged (44.32±7.47) years old. At the same period, 58 patients with chronic nasopharyngitis who underwent nasopharyngeal biopsy were selected as the control group. Immunohistochemical method was used to detect the expression of pepsin in nasopharyngeal specimens of the two groups. In addition, 188 normal individuals were selected as the normal group in the same period. NPC patients before and within 6 months after radiotherapy were inverstigated by the General Information Questionnaire and the Quality of Life Scale, and the pepsin levels in saliva of NPC patients before and after radiotherapy and the individuals in normal group were measured. SPSS 21.0 software was used for statistical analysis. Results: Pepsin expression in 133 specimens of NPC patients was strongly positive in 24 cases (18.05%), positive in 21 cases (15.79%), weakly positive in 69 cases (51.88%), and negative in 19 cases (14.29%). The specimens of control group had 10 cases of weakly positive (17.24%), 48 cases of negative (82.76%), but no strong positive or positive pepsin expression. The rate of positive pepsin expression in the NPC group was higher than that in the control group, with a statistically significant (χ 2 =83.15, P< 0.001). The pepsin content in the saliva of NPC patients after radiotherapy ((30.31±7.82) ng/ml) was higher than that before radiotherapy ((20.47±8.21) ng/ml) and the normal group (5.11±2.13) ng/ml), and the pepsin content in saliva before radiotherapy was higher than that in the normal group, and all differences were statistically significant (all P< 0.05). After radiotherapy, the five functional domains of quality of life and overall quality of life of NPC patients decreased, while the related symptom scores increased (all P< 0.05). Multiple linear regression analysis showed that pepsin content in saliva was the influential factor of five functional domains of quality of life, related symptoms and overall quality of life in NPC patients after radiotherapy (all P< 0.05). Conclusion: The positive rate of pepsin expression in NPC tissues is high, and the pepsin in saliva before and after radiotherapy of NPC patients is significantly higher than that in normal, suggesting that LPR may be involved in the process of NPC and affect the quality of life after radiotherapy in NPC patients.

Objective: To analyze whether there are differences and related influencing factors in liver injury associated with different strains of 2019-nCoV/SARS-CoV-2 infection. Methods: Data of epidemiology, clinical symptoms, laboratory tests, and treatment outcomes of patients with COVID-19 infection confirmed with Alpha and Delta virus strain in Zhejiang Province were retrospectively collected. Statistical analysis was performed using independent samples t-test or Mann-Whitney U test, χ 2 test or Fisher's exact test, and logistic regression analysis. Results: A total of 788 and 381 cases with Alpha and Delta virus strain were included. Vaccination ratio was 0% in Alpha and 85.30% in Delta group ( P <0.001), The proportion of patients with fever (80.71% vs . 40.94%, P <0.001) was significantly higher in Alpha than Delta strain group. The proportion of critical ill patients was significantly higher in Delta group (9.90% vs . 1.57%, respectively, P <0.001). The virus negative conversion time was significantly longer in Delta than Alpha group (22 d vs. 11 d, P <0.001), but the incidence of liver injury was significantly higher in Alpha than Delta group (20.05% vs . 13.91%, P =0.011). Univariate analysis showed that Alpha virus strain infection, male sex, body mass index, chronic liver disease, fever, diarrhea, shortness of breath, severe/critical illness, elevated creatine kinase (CK), elevated international normalized ratio (INR) and an elevated neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio was significantly associated with an increased risk of liver injury occurrence, and in patients with pharyngeal pain the risk of liver injury occurrence was significantly reduced. Multivariate analysis showed that shortness of breath [ OR , 2.667 ( CI : 1.389-5.122); P =0.003], increased CK [ OR , 2.544 ( CI : 1.414-4.576); P =0.002] and increased INR [OR, 1.721] ( CI : 1.074-2.758); P =0.024] was significantly associated with an increased risk of liver injury occurrence, and in patients with pharyngeal pain the risk of liver injury occurrence was significantly reduced [ OR , 0.424 ( CI : 0.254-0.709); P =0.001]. Conclusion: Although the virulence of the Delta is stronger than Alpha strain, most patients infected with Delta strain vaccinated against COVID-19 in Zhejiang province had milder clinical symptoms and a lower incidence and degree of liver injury. Notably, the infection risk even remains after vaccination; however, symptoms and the incidence of severe and critical illness can be significantly reduced.

Objective: To explore the relationship between NLRP3-mediated pyroptosis and olfactory dysfunction (OD) in allergic rhinitis (AR), and to evaluate the therapeutic potential of CY-09, a selective NLRP3 inhibitor for OD. Methods: An AR mouse model was established with ovalbumin, and the olfactory function of AR mice was detected by the buried food pellet test. Mice with OD were intraperitoneally injected with CY-09 or saline. The activation of microglia and astrocytes in olfactory bulb was detected by immunohistochemistry. The expression level of pyroptosis associated protein was detected by Western blot. The level of pyroptosis associated proinflammatory factor mRNA was determined by real-time PCR. SPSS 24.0 software was used for statistical analysis. Results: After the test, ovalbumin successfully established AR mice model, in which 52.5% (21/40) of them showed OD. The number of activated microglia and astroglia in olfactory bulb tissue in OD group were more than those in non-OD group (all P <0.05). Compared with the control group, the expression of NLRP3, caspase-1 and gasdermin D (GSDMD) was significantly increased in the olfactory bulb of the OD group (all P <0.05). CY-09 could significantly reduce the level of NLRP3, caspase-1, GSDMD, IL-1β and IL-18 expression, and inhibite the activation of microglia and astrocytes in the olfactory bulb tissues (all P <0.05). Conclusion: NLRP3-mediated pyroptosis is closely related to the OD associated with AR. CY-09 could improve the olfactory function in AR mice, which may be related to blocking the NLRP3-mediated pyroptosis.

Four new iboga-type alkaloids, ervaoffines H-K (1-4), along with five known compounds were obtained from the aerial parts of Ervatamia officinalis. The absolute configurations of 1-4 were confirmed by X-ray diffraction and electronic circular dichroism (ECD) analyses. The isolates were tested for their anti-inflammatory activity. Objective: To compare the value of 25-hydroxyvitamin D3 (25-(OH)D3) with other clinical parameters in the prediction and diagnosis of eosinophilic chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps (ECRSwNP). Methods: Eligible chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps (CRSwNP) patients and healthy subjects in the Affiliated Hospital of Guizhou Medical University from January to April of 2021 were included for this study. The age, gender, past history and other basic characteristics of all subjects were recorded. The CRSwNP patients were classified into ECRSwNP and non-eosinophilic chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps (nECRSwNP) endotypes by the percentage of tissue eosinophils. Serum 25-(OH)D3 levels measurements were performed in all subjects. Paranasal sinus CT scans, blood eosinophil counts, and determination of total immunoglobulin E (total IgE), Th1/Th2 plasma cytokines and nasal nitric oxide (nNO) levels were performed before surgery. Logistic regression analysis was used to evaluate the related factors of ECRSwNP. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves was used to evaluate the predictive potential of the clinical parameters. Results: One hundred and twenty-seven CRSwNP patients and 40 healthy subjects were recruited, including 74 males and 93 females of the patients, with the age of (38.73±13.05) years. In patients with ECRSwNP, serum 25-(OH)D3 levels were significantly lower than those in nECRSwNP patients ((26.14±4.58) ng/ml vs (35.71±7.86) ng/ml, t =-8.564, P <0.01). The prevalence of asthma, prevalence of allergic rhinitis, peripheral blood eosinophil counts, total IgE levels, nNO levels and CT scores ratio for ethmoid sinus and maxillary sinus (E/M ratio) of ECRSwNP patients were significantly higher than those in nECRSwNP patients (all P <0.05). However, there was no significant difference in Th1/Th2 cytokines levels between the histological types of CRSwNP (all P >0.05). Among the predictive indicators, 25-(OH)D3 had the highest predictive value, with ROC area under curve (AUC) value of 0.882. The best cut-off point of 28.5 ng/ml for 25-(OH)D3 demonstrated a sensitivity of 0.871 and a specificity of 0.762 for ECRSwNP. Conclusion: Measurement of serum 25-(OH)D3 level may be used as an effective method to distinguish between ECRSwNP and nECRSwNP.

As a natural compound isolated from Paeoniae radix, Paeoniflorin (PF) has been shown the antitumor effects in various types of human cancers including glioma, which is one of the serious tumors in central nervous system. Translocator protein 18 KDa (TSPO) has been shown to be relevant to the glioma aetiology. However, the regulation of PF in TSPO and neurosteriods biosynthesis on glioma is still unclear. In the present study, the glioma cell (U87 and U251) were cultured and used to quantify the bindings of PF on TSPO. Results indicated that there was not significant different between IC50 of PF and TSPO ligand PK11195. Moreover, PF exerted the anti-proliferative effects in glioma cell with a dose dependent inhibition from 12.5 to 100 μM in vitro. Consistent with the effects of PK11195, lowered levels on progesterone, allopregnanolone, as well as TSPO mRNA were induced by PF (25 and 50 μM). Furthermore, a xenograft mouse model with U87 cell-derived was significant inhibited by PF treatment, as well as the PK11195 administration. Objective: To evaluate the mental state and quality of life in patients with vasomotor rhinitis (VMR) before and after treatment, and to provide guidance for improving the overall health of VMR patients. Methods: Two hundred and twenty VMR patients (VMR group, 118 males, 102 females; aged from 18 to 72 years old), three hundred and twenty allergic rhinitis (AR) patients (AR group, 178 males, 142 females; aged from 18 to 79 years old) from January 2016 to September 2019 were selected in the otolaryngology clinic of Affiliated Hospital of Guizhou Medical University, four hundred and twenty-three healthy people (control group, 243 males, 180 females; aged from 19 to 70 years old) were selected in physical examination center at the same time by continuous enrollment method, symptom check list (SCL-90), self-rating anxiety scale (SAS) and self-rating depression scale (SDS) were used to evaluate the mental state of VMR patients before and after treatment, and 12-item short form health survey version 2.0 (SF-12v2) was used to evaluate their quality of life, statistical data were collected and analyzed by ANOVA and t -test. Results: The scores of eight factors (physical function, role physical function, general health, vitality, role-emotional, mental health) of SF-12v2 in VMR patients before treatment were lower than that of posttreatment, that of AR patients and the control group, the differences were significant (all P< 0.05), the scores of somatization, obsession, depression, anxiety and psychosis in SCL-90 in VMR patients before treatment were significantly higher than that of posttreatment, that of AR patients and the control group (all P< 0.05), the SAS and SDS in VMR patients before treatment (51.28±16.32; 53.28±18.55) were significantly higher than that of posttreatment (38.53±13.21; 39.35±13.34), that of AR patients (42.23±14.32; 43.32±13.78) and the control group (29.78±10.07;33.46±10.55; t (SAS) were 9.007, 6.813 and 20.59; t (SDS) were 9.043, 7.154 and 17.260, all P< 0.05). Conclusion: VMR patients generally suffer from psychological damage, which seriously affects the quality of life of the patients. On the basis of routine treatment, we should attach more importance to the negative psychology of VMR patients and intervene when necessary.

Objective: To elucidate the promotive role of TRPP2 in nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) proliferation by targeting Skp2/c-Myc, thus accelerating the malignant progression., Patients and Methods: TRPP2 levels in NPC patients with different T stages were detected. Correlation between TRPP2 level and clinical features of NPC patients was analyzed. Kaplan-Meier curves were depicted for assessing the prognostic value of TRPP2 in NPC. Subsequently, regulatory effects of TRPP2 on viability and 5-ethynyl-2'-deoxyuridine (EdU)-positive ratio were determined by cell counting kit-8 (CCK-8) and EdU assay, respectively. Relative levels of Skp2 and c-Myc in NPC cells transfected with si-TRPP2 were examined. At last, the involvement of c-Myc in TRPP2-regulated proliferative ability of NPC was evaluated by performing rescue experiments., Results: TRPP2 was upregulated in NPC tissues. TRPP2 level was higher in NPC patients with T3+T4 than those with T1+T2. Worse survival was observed in NPC patients expressing high level of TRPP2. TRPP2 level was correlated to T stage, N stage, M stage, and locoregional failure of NPC patients. Knockdown of TRPP2 reduced viability and EdU-positive ratio in NPC cells. In addition, relative levels of Skp2 and c-Myc in NPC cells transfected with si-TRPP2 were downregulated. Overexpression of c-Myc could partially reverse the regulatory effects of TRPP2 on NPC proliferation., Conclusions: TRPP2 stimulates NPC cells to proliferate by upregulating expressions of Skp2/c-Myc, thus deteriorating the development of NPC.

Objective: The purpose of this study was to uncover the correlations of expression levels of microRNA-429 (miRNA-429) and SOX2 with clinical parameters and prognosis of nasopharyngeal carcinoma., Patients and Methods: Nasopharyngeal carcinoma patients (n=95) and nasopharyngitis patients (n=95) in the same period were enrolled. The relative levels of miRNA-429 and SOX2 in nasopharyngeal tissues collected from these patients were detected by reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). Then, the potential correlation between miRNA-429 and SOX2 was analyzed by Pearson correlation test. Next, the influences of miRNA-429 and SOX2 levels on clinical parameters of nasopharyngeal carcinoma patients were assessed. At last, the factors influencing the prognosis of nasopharyngeal carcinoma were determined using the Cox regression model., Results: It was found that downregulated miRNA-429 and upregulated SOX2 were observed in nasopharyngeal tissues collected from nasopharyngeal carcinoma patients. MiRNA-429 level was negatively correlated with that of SOX2 in nasopharyngeal carcinoma tissues. In addition, miRNA-429 and SOX2 levels were related to age, tumor differentiation, T stage, N stage, and clinical grade of nasopharyngeal carcinoma patients. Moreover, worse prognosis was seen in nasopharyngeal carcinoma patients expressing low level of miRNA-429 or high level of SOX2. Furthermore, Cox regression analysis showed that T3-T4 stage, moderate to high differentiation, and high level of SOX2 were risk factors, while high level of miRNA-429 was the protective factor for nasopharyngeal carcinoma., Conclusions: Downregulation of miRNA-429 and upregulation of SOX2 are unfavorable to the prognosis of nasopharyngeal carcinoma.

Background: Currently, there are no drugs that have been proven to be effective against severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). Because of its broad antiviral activity, interferon (IFN) should be evaluated as a potential therapeutic agent for treatment of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), especially while COVID-19-specific therapies are still under development., Methods: Confirmed COVID-19 patients hospitalized in the First Affiliated Hospital, School of Medicine, Zhejiang University in Hangzhou, China, from January 19 to February 19, 2020 were enrolled in a retrospective study. The patients were separated into an IFN group and a control group according to whether they received initial IFN-α2b inhalation treatment after admission. Propensity-score matching was used to balance the confounding factors., Results: A total of 104 confirmed COVID-19 patients, 68 in the IFN group and 36 in the control group, were enrolled. Less hypertension (27.9% vs. 55.6%, P=0.006), dyspnea (8.8% vs. 25.0%, P=0.025), or diarrhea (4.4% vs. 19.4%, P=0.030) was observed in the IFN group. Lower levels of albumin and C-reactive protein and higher level of sodium were observed in the IFN group. Glucocorticoid dosage was lower in the IFN group (median, 40 vs. 80 mg/d, P=0.025). Compared to the control group, fewer patients in the IFN group were ventilated (13.2% vs. 33.3%, P=0.015) and admitted to intensive care unit (ICU) (16.2% vs. 44.4%, P=0.002). There were also fewer critical patients in the IFN group (7.4% vs. 25.0%, P=0.017) upon admission. Although complications during admission process were comparable between groups, the discharge rate (85.3% vs. 66.7%, P=0.027) was higher and the hospitalization time (16 vs. 21 d, P=0.015) was shorter in the IFN group. When other confounding factors were not considered, virus shedding time (10 vs. 13 d, P=0.014) was also shorter in the IFN group. However, when the influence of other factors was eliminated using propensity score matching, virus shedding time was not significantly shorter than that of the control group (12 vs. 15 d, P=0.206)., Conclusions: IFN-α2b spray inhalation did not shorten virus shedding time of SARS-CoV-2 in hospitalized patients.

Background: The outbreak of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is now becoming an enormous threat to public health. The clinical spectrum of COVID-19 is extensive, of which critical cases are with rapid disease progression and high mortality. The aim of our study is to summarize the characteristics of different subtypes and explore risk factors of illness severity for early identification and prompt treatment., Methods: In this retrospective study, we collected data of patients confirmed COVID-19 in Zhejiang Province from 17 January to 12 February 2020. According to the definition of clinical classification, we divided confirmed cases into four types, and summarize epidemiological and clinical characteristics, laboratory and radiograph findings, treatments, and outcomes, respectively. Moreover, we used univariate and multivariate ordinal logistic regression models to explore risk factors for the severity of illness in patients with COVID-19., Results: A total of 788 patients were enrolled in our study, of whom 52 cases (6.6%) were mild type, 658 cases (83.5%) were common type, 61 cases (7.2%) were severe type, and 17 cases (2.2%) were critical type. Multivariate ordinal logistic regression demonstrated increasing odds of the severity of illness in patients with COVID-19 associated with male (odds ratio [OR] = 1.7, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.2-2.6 P = 0.008), fever (OR = 3.6, 95% CI: 2.1-6.3, P <  0.001), cough (OR = 1.7, 95% CI: 1.0-2.9, P = 0.041), hemoptysis (OR = 3.4, 95% CI: 1.1-10.3, P = 0.032), gastrointestinal symptoms (OR = 1.9, 95% CI: 1.0-3.5, P = 0.047), hypertension (OR = 2.6, 95% CI: 1.2-5.6, P = 0.013). With the increase of age-grading, risk for the severity of illness was gradually higher (≤ 18 years [OR = 1.0], 19-40 years [OR = 12.7, 95% CI: 4.5-36.0, P < 0.001], 41-65 years [OR = 14.8, 95% CI: 5.2-42.1, P <  0.001], ≥ 66 years [OR = 56.5, 95% CI: 17.1-186.5, P < 0.001])., Conclusions: Clinicians should pay close attention to these features in patients with COVID-19 including older age, male, fever, cough, hemoptysis, gastrointestinal symptoms and hypertension to identify the severity of illness as early as possible.

Introduction: Elevated liver enzyme levels are observed in patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19); however, these features have not been characterized., Methods: Hospitalized patients with COVID-19 in Zhejiang Province, China, from January 17 to February 12, 2020, were enrolled. Liver enzyme level elevation was defined as alanine aminotransferase level >35 U/L for men and 25 U/L for women at admission. Patients with normal alanine aminotransferase levels were included in the control group. Reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction was used to confirm severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection, and patients symptomatic with SARS-CoV-2 infection were defined as patients with COVID-19. Epidemiological, demographic, clinical, laboratory, treatment, and outcome data were collected and compared., Results: Of 788 patients with COVID-19, 222 (28.2%) patients had elevated liver enzyme levels (median [interquartile range {IQR}] age, 47.0 [35.0-55.0] years; 40.5% women). Being male, overweight, and smoking increased the risk of liver enzyme level elevation. The liver enzyme level elevation group had lesser pharyngalgia and more diarrhea than the control group. The median time from illness onset to admission was 3 days for liver enzyme level elevation groups (IQR, 2-6), whereas the median hospitalization time for 86 (38.7%) discharged patients was 13 days (IQR, 11-16). No differences in disease severity and clinical outcomes were noted between the groups., Discussion: We found that 28.2% of patients with COVID-19 presented with elevated liver enzyme levels on admission, which could partially be related to SARS-CoV-2 infection. Male patients had a higher risk of liver enzyme level elevation. With early medical intervention, liver enzyme level elevation did not worsen the outcomes of patients with COVID-19.

Objective: The SARS-CoV-2-infected disease (COVID-19) outbreak is a major threat to human beings. Previous studies mainly focused on Wuhan and typical symptoms. We analysed 74 confirmed COVID-19 cases with GI symptoms in the Zhejiang province to determine epidemiological, clinical and virological characteristics., Design: COVID-19 hospital patients were admitted in the Zhejiang province from 17 January 2020 to 8 February 2020. Epidemiological, demographic, clinical, laboratory, management and outcome data of patients with GI symptoms were analysed using multivariate analysis for risk of severe/critical type. Bioinformatics were used to analyse features of SARS-CoV-2 from Zhejiang province., Results: Among enrolled 651 patients, 74 (11.4%) presented with at least one GI symptom (nausea, vomiting or diarrhoea), average age of 46.14 years, 4-day incubation period and 10.8% had pre-existing liver disease. Of patients with COVID-19 with GI symptoms, 17 (22.97%) and 23 (31.08%) had severe/critical types and family clustering, respectively, significantly higher than those without GI symptoms, 47 (8.14%) and 118 (20.45%). Of patients with COVID-19 with GI symptoms, 29 (39.19%), 23 (31.08%), 8 (10.81%) and 16 (21.62%) had significantly higher rates of fever >38.5°C, fatigue, shortness of breath and headache, respectively. Low-dose glucocorticoids and antibiotics were administered to 14.86% and 41.89% of patients, respectively. Sputum production and increased lactate dehydrogenase/glucose levels were risk factors for severe/critical type. Bioinformatics showed sequence mutation of SARS-CoV-2 with m 6 A methylation and changed binding capacity with ACE2., Conclusion: We report COVID-19 cases with GI symptoms with novel features outside Wuhan. Background: A novel coronavirus called severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), first identified in Wuhan, China, has been rapidly spreading around the world. This study investigates the epidemiological and clinical characteristics of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) patients in Zhejiang Province who did or did not have a history of Wuhan exposure., Methods: We collected data from medical records of confirmed COVID-19 patients in Zhejiang Province from Jan. 17 to Feb. 7, 2020 and analyzed epidemiological, clinical, and treatment data of those with and without recorded recent exposure in Wuhan., Results: Patients in the control group were older than those in the exposure group ((48.19±16.13) years vs. (43.47±13.12) years, P<0.001), and more were over 65 years old (15.95% control vs. 5.60% exposure, P<0.001). The rate of clustered onset was also significantly higher in the control group than in the exposure group (31.39% vs. 18.66%, P<0.001). The symptom of a sore throat in patients in the exposure group was significantly higher than that in the control group (17.30% vs. 10.89%, P=0.01); however, headache in the exposure group was significantly lower than that in the control group (6.87% vs. 12.15%, P=0.015). More patients in the exposure group had a significantly lower level of lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) and aspartate aminotransferase (AST) than those in the control group. There was no significant difference in any degree of COVID-19 including mild, severe, and critical between the two groups., Conclusions: From the perspective of epidemiological and clinical characteristics, there was no significant difference between COVID-19 patients with and without Wuhan exposure history.

Chlorine dioxide (ClO 2 ) has been widely used as an effective disinfectant to control fungal contamination during postharvest crop storage. In this study, Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. batatas SP-f6 from the black rot symptom of sweetpotato was isolated and identified using phylogenetic analysis of elongation factor 1-α gene; we further examined the in vitro and in vivo inhibitory activities of ClO 2 gas against the fungus. In the in vitro medium tests, fungal population was significantly inhibited upon increasing the concentration and exposure time. In in vivo tests, spore suspensions were drop-inoculated onto sweetpotato slices, followed by treatment using various ClO 2 concentrations and treatment times to assess fungus-induced disease development in the slices. Lesion diameters decreased at the tested ClO 2 concentrations over time. When sweetpotato roots were dip-inoculated in spore suspensions prior to treatment with 20 and 40 ppm of ClO 2 for 0-60 min, fungal populations significantly decreased at the tested concentrations for 30-60 min. Taken together, these results showed that ClO 2 gas can effectively inhibit fungal growth and disease development caused by F. oxysporum f. sp. batatas on sweetpotato. Background: Diabetic chronic kidney disease (CKD) has become the main cause of death in diabetic patients, but its pathogenesis has not yet been clear., Objective: To investigate the effects of reduced glutathione (GSH) on oxidative stress (OS), angiogenesis factors and lymphocyte subsets in diabetic CKD patients., Methods: A total of 130 subjects were retrospectively studied. The subjects were divided into the control group (45 cases), treatment group (45 cases, treated with reduced GSH), and a healthy control group (40 cases). The levels of superoxide dismutase (SOD), advanced oxidation protein products (AOPP), malondialdehyde (MDA), endostatin (ES), and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), and the percentages of lymphocyte subsets were detected., Results: After treatment, the indexes of OS and angiogenesis and the percentage of CD3 - CD19 + B cells were obviously decreased, and the percentages of T cell subsets and natural killer (NK) cell subsets were markedly increased in the treatment group compared with the control group. AOPP was positively correlated with angiogenesis indexes, MDA and CD3 - CD19 + B cells, and negatively correlated with SOD and other lymphocyte subsets. SOD was inversely associated with angiogenesis indexes and MDA, and positively associated with lymphocyte subsets. Moreover, MDA had a positive correlation with angiogenesis indexes, B and T cell subsets, and a negative correlation with NK cell subsets. AOPP, MDA, SOD, VEGF, CD3 + T cells, CD3 + CD8 + T cells, CD3 - CDl6 + CD56 + NK cells, and CD3 - CDl6 + CD56 + NK T cells were the risk factors of diabetic CKD., Conclusion: GSH could inhibit OS and abnormal angiogenesis, and improve cellular immune response in CKD patients., (© 2018 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.)

Chlorine dioxide (ClO 2 ) can be used as an alternative disinfectant for controlling fungal contamination during postharvest storage. In this study, we tested the in vitro and in vivo inhibitory effects of gaseous ClO 2 against Diaporthe batatas SP-d1, the causal agent of sweetpotato dry rot. In in vitro tests, spore suspensions of SP-d1 spread on acidified potato dextrose agar were treated with various ClO 2 concentrations (1-20 ppm) for 0-60 min. Fungal growth was significantly inhibited at 1 ppm of ClO 2 treatment for 30 min, and completely inhibited at 20 ppm. In in vivo tests, spore suspensions were drop-inoculated onto sweetpotato slices, followed by ClO 2 treatment with different concentrations and durations. Lesion diameters were not significantly different between the tested ClO 2 concentrations; however, lesion diameters significantly decreased upon increasing the exposure time. Similarly, fungal populations decreased at the tested ClO 2 concentrations over time. However, the sliced tissue itself hardened after 60-min ClO 2 treatments, especially at 20 ppm of ClO 2 . When sweetpotato roots were dip-inoculated in spore suspensions for 10 min prior to treatment with 20 and 40 ppm of ClO 2 for 0-60 min, fungal populations decreased with increasing ClO 2 concentrations. Taken together, these results showed that gaseous ClO 2 could significantly inhibit D. batatas growth and dry rot development in sweetpotato. Overall, gaseous ClO 2 could be used to control this fungal disease during the postharvest storage of sweetpotato.

Objective: To investigate the efficacy of flupentixol melitracen on different stages of sudden deafness patients with anxiety and depression. Method: Totally one hundred and sixty-three sudden deafness patients with anxiety and depression were randomly divided into two groups: experimental group(81 cases) and control group (82 cases). All patients were given routine treatment for 2 weeks. The experimental group was given oral flupentixol melitracen (1 tablet/day)for a period of 3 months. The hearing, tinnitus effect and vertigo treatment course were observed and compared. Curing rate of tinnitus at 2 weeks, 3 months and 6 months after treatment, self-rating anxiety scale (SAS) and depressive state scale (self-rating depression scale, SDS) score were collected and compared. Result: Total efficiency of hearing and tinnitus of experimental group(86.42%,84.21%)were higher than that of the control group(67.07%,61.29%);the vertigo cured the average treatment time of experimental group days was less than that of the control groupdays,all the differences were statistically significant.After treatment,the average hearing threshold value of the two groups of patients were lower than that before treatment,the low frequency descent type, high-frequency descent type,flat down type and total deafness type thresholds of the experimental group were lower than of the control group,all the differences were statistically significant.The tinnitus cure rate of experiment group were higher than the control group at 3months and 6 months after treatment,the differences were statistically significant;and after 3months and 6 months treatment tinnitus cure rate higher of the experimental group than that of after 2 weeks the treatment,the difference was statistically significant.After 2 weeks,3 months and 6 months treatment,the SAS and SDS scores of two groups were lower than that before treatment.The SAS and SDS scores of the experimental group decreased after 2 weeks,3 months and 6 months treatment, and the difference was statistically significant at different time points,the SAS,SDS scores of experimental group after treatment were lower than the control group at the same time,the differences were statistically significant. Intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (IHCC) is an aggressive cancer with a poor survival rate and is the second most common type of primary cancer of the hepatobiliary system. At present, the molecular mechanisms of IHCC initiation and progression remain unclear. Recent evidence has indicated that long non‑coding RNAs (lncRNAs) serve a crucial role in cancer development; however, the functional role of lncRNAs in IHCC has not been investigated in detail. In the present study, a marked overexpression of lncRNA colon cancer‑associated transcript 2 (CCAT2) was observed in IHCC cell lines and clinical specimens. Statistical analysis of IHCC clinicopathological characteristics and CCAT2 expression data revealed that high CCAT2 expression levels correlated with microvascular invasion, differentiation grade, tumor (T), lymph node (N), metastasis (M) and overall TNM stages of IHCC (P<0.05). Kaplan‑Meier analysis demonstrated that CCAT2 upregulation was associated with poor overall survival and progression‑free survival in IHCC. Furthermore, high CCAT2 expression was identified as an independent risk factor of IHCC poor prognosis in both univariate and multivariate Cox regression analyses. The role of CCAT2 in promoting IHCC cell proliferation, motility and invasion was further confirmed with in vitro assays. Therefore, CCAT2 may promote IHCC progression and metastasis, and may be a promising prognostic biomarker and therapeutic target in IHCC.

In this study, we aimed to characterize fungal samples from necrotic lesions on collar regions observed in different sweetpotato growing regions during 2015 and 2016 in Korea. Sclerotia appeared on the root zone soil surface, and white dense mycelia were observed. At the later stages of infection, mother roots quickly rotted, and large areas of the plants were destroyed. The disease occurrence was monitored at 45 and 84 farms, and 11.8% and 6.8% of the land areas were found to be infected in 2015 and 2016, respectively. Fungi were isolated from disease samples, and 36 strains were preserved. Based on the cultural and morphological characteristics of colonies, the isolates resembled the reference strain of Sclerotium rolfsii . Representative strains were identified as S. rolfsii (teleomorph: Athelia rolfsii ) based on phylogenetic analysis of the internal transcribed spacer and large subunit genes along with morphological observations. To test the pathogenicity, sweetpotato storage roots were inoculated with different S. rolfsii strains. 'Yulmi' variety displayed the highest disease incidence, whereas 'Pungwonmi' resulted in the least. These findings suggested that morphological characteristics and molecular phylogenetic analysis were useful for identification of S. rolfsii .

Strong coupling between two qubits is one of the main requirements for high fidelity two-qubit logic operations. Here we experimentally investigate the capacitive coupling between two double quantum dots. A pair of open slot confinement gates is used to enhance the coupling. We find that the coupling energy J can be conveniently tuned in a broad range. Through numerical simulations, we study the effect of J on two-qubit operations. The analysis shows that our experimentally obtained J is adequate to achieve high fidelity two-qubit entanglement and logic gates.

Background and Aims: Contrast-induced nephropathy (CIN) after percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) is one of the major adverse outcomes affecting the prognosis of patients with acute ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI). Ischemic postconditioning prior to PCI (pre-PCI) in patients with STEMI is hypothesized to be protective against CIN after PCI., Methods: A total of 251 patients with STEMI were randomized into two groups: ischemic postconditioning group (n = 123, age, 61.1 ± 12.5 years) who underwent ischemic postconditioning prior to PCI; control group (n = 128; age, 64.1 ± 12.1 years) who underwent only PCI. Ischemic postconditioning was administered by three cycles of deflation and inflation of the balloon (1-min ischemia and 1-min reperfusion) starting 1 min after infarct-related artery (IRA) opening. Diagnostic criterion for CIN was: increase in serum creatinine level by ≥0.5 mg/dL or by ≥25% increase from preoperative level within 48 h of surgery. All patients were followed for 1 year for incidence of major cardiovascular events (MACE)., Results: The incidence of postoperative CIN in the ischemic postconditioning group was 5.69% as compared to 14.06% in the control group (p <0.05). At one year, the MACE incidence in the ischemic postconditioning group was 7.32% as compared to 15.63% in the control group (p <0.05)., Conclusions: Pre-PCI ischemic postconditioning in STEMI patients significantly reduces the post-PCI incidence of CIN and improves long-term prognosis., (Copyright © 2016 IMSS. We experimentally demonstrate a tunable hybrid qubit in a five-electron GaAs double quantum dot. The qubit is encoded in the (1,4) charge regime of the double dot and can be manipulated completely electrically. More importantly, dot anharmonicity leads to quasiparallel energy levels and a new anticrossing, which help preserve quantum coherence of the qubit and yield a useful working point. We have performed Larmor precession and Ramsey fringe experiments near the new working point and find that the qubit decoherence time is significantly improved over a charge qubit. This work shows a new way to encode a semiconductor qubit that is controllable and coherent.

β-amyloid peptides (Aβs) can exert neurotoxic effects through induction of oxidative damage, whereas lipoic acid (LA), a powerful antioxidant, can alleviate oxidative damage. In this study, we explored the effect and mechanism of action of LA on beta-amyloid-intoxicated C6 glioma cells. Cells were randomly divided into three groups: control (vehicle), Aβ, and LA + Aβ. The LA + Aβ group was treated with LA for 2 h, then both the Aβ-only and the LA + Aβ groups were incubated with 25 μM Aβ for 24 h. Cell viability was measured by the MTT method. Mitochondrial reduced glutathione (GSH) and oxidized glutathione (GSSG) levels were detected by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), and the GSH to GSSG ratio calculated. Real-time polymerase chain reaction and western blot analyses were used to detect MnSOD mRNA and protein, respectively. Aβ significantly inhibited C6 cell proliferation compared with the control group (P < 0.05). LA markedly increased cell viability compared with the Aβ group (P < 0.05). The increased GSSH and decreased GSH mitochondrial accumulation induced by Aβ was profoundly reversed by treatment with LA (P < 0.05). Aβ significantly reduced MnSOD expression compared to controls (P < 0.05), whereas LA pretreatment increased MnSOD expression compared with the Aβ-only group (P < 0.05); MnSOD protein levels showed similar patterns. These results suggest that LA might protect Aβ-intoxicated C6 glioma cells by alleviating oxidative damage, providing a new treatment strategy for neurodegenerative diseases.

Universal multiple-qubit gates can be implemented by a set of universal single-qubit gates and any one kind of entangling two-qubit gate, such as a controlled-NOT gate. For semiconductor quantum dot qubits, two-qubit gate operations have so far only been demonstrated in individual electron spin-based quantum dot systems. Here we demonstrate the conditional rotation of two capacitively coupled charge qubits, each consisting of an electron confined in a GaAs/AlGaAs double quantum dot. Owing to the strong inter-qubit coupling strength, gate operations with a clock speed up to 6 GHz have been realized. A truth table measurement for controlled-NOT operation shows comparable fidelities to that of spin-based two-qubit gates, although phase coherence is not explicitly measured. Our results suggest that semiconductor charge qubits have a considerable potential for scalable quantum computing and may stimulate the use of long-range Coulomb interaction for coherent quantum control in other devices.

Miscanthus sacchariflorus 'Goedae-Uksae 1' (GU) was developed as an energy crop of high productivity in Korea. For the practical use of GU for bioethanol production, a bench-scale continuous pretreatment system was developed. The reactor performed screw extrusion, soaking and thermochemical pretreatment at the following operating conditions: 3 mm particle size, 22% moisture content, 140 °C reaction temperature, 8 min residence time, 15 g/min biomass feeding and 120 mL/min NaOH input. As a result of minimizing NaOH concentration and enzyme dosage, 90.8±0.49% glucose yield was obtained from 0.5 M NaOH-pretreated GU containing 3% glucan with 10 FPU cellulase/g cellulose at 50 °C for 72 h. The separate hydrolysis and fermentation of 0.5 M NaOH-pretreated GU containing 10% glucan with 10-30 FPU for 102 h produced 43.0-49.6 g/L bioethanol (theoretical yield, 75.8-87.6%). Aim: To evaluate urine β2-microglobulin (β2-M), retinol-binding protein (RBP) excretion, and renal impairment with adefovir dipivoxil (ADV) for chronic hepatitis B., Methods: We enrolled 165 patients with chronic hepatitis B infection who were treated with ADV monotherapy (n = 90) or ADV plus lamivudine combination therapy (n = 75). An additional 165 chronic hepatitis B patients treated with entecavir were recruited as controls. We detected serum creatinine, urine β2-M, and RBP levels, and estimated the glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) at the initiation of antiviral therapy and every 6 mo for a period of five years., Results: Urine β2-M abnormalities were observed in patients during the first (n = 3), second (n = 7), third (n = 11), fourth (n = 16), and fifth (n = 21) year of ADV treatment. Urinary RBP abnormalities were observed in patients during the first (n = 2), second (n = 8), third (n = 12), fourth (n = 15), and fifth (n = 22) year of ADV treatment. eGFR decreased 20%-30% from baseline in 20 patients, 30%-50% in 12 patients, and > 50% in 3 patients during the five years of treatment. Further analysis indicated that decreases in eGFR of ≥ 30% relative to the baseline level correlated significantly with urine RBP and β2-M abnormalities. In contrast, both serum creatinine and eGFR remained stable in patients treated with entecavir, and only one of these patients developed a urine β2-M abnormality, and two developed urine RBP abnormalities during the five years of treatment., Conclusion: Urine RBP and β2-M are biomarkers of renal injury during long-term ADV treatment for chronic hepatitis B, and indicate when treatment should be switched to entecavir.

Objective: T0 understand the population distribution, species abundance and habitats requirement of a medicinal animal, Centropus sinensis, in Guangxi Province., Methods: Line transect methods were used to census population number and habitat types in 18 counties or cities of Guangxi., Results: Centropus sinensis distributed in all study area, with a higher population density in the south than in the north. Among seven habitat types, the species preferred living in forest-farmland ecotone, while seldom in broad-leaves forest or plantations., Conclusion: The results of habitat preference show an advantage to the population recovering for forest-farmland ecotone commonly existing in Guangxi Province. But the speed of population recovering is slowly under illegal hunting pressure. More attention should be paid to protect this species.

A CO2-added ammonia explosion pretreatment was performed for bioethanol production from rice straw. The pretreatment conditions, such as ammonia concentration, CO2 loading level, residence time, and temperature were optimized using response surface methodology. The response for optimization was defined as the glucose conversion rate. The optimized pretreatment conditions resulting in maximal glucose yield (93.6 %) were determined as 14.3 % of ammonia concentration, 2.2 MPa of CO2 loading level, 165.1 °C of temperature, and 69.8 min of residence time. Scanning electron microscopy analysis showed that pretreatment of rice straw strongly increased the surface area and pore size, thus increasing enzymatic accessibility for enzymatic saccharification. Finally, an ethanol yield of 97 % was achieved via simultaneous saccharification and fermentation. Thus, the present study suggests that CO2-added ammonia pretreatment is an appropriate process for bioethanol production from rice straw.

: Electron transport properties in an armchair graphene nanoribbon are theoretically investigated by considering the presence of line defect. It is found that the line defect causes the abundant Fano effects and bound state in continuum (BIC) in the electron transport process, which are tightly dependent on the width of the nanoribbon. By plotting the spectra of the density of electron states of the line defect, we see that the line defect induces some localized quantum states around the Dirac point and that the different localizations of these states lead to these two kinds of transport results. Next, the Fano effect and BIC phenomenon are detailedly described via the analysis about the influence of the structure parameters. The association of sarcoidosis and immune thrombocytopenia (ITP) has rarely been investigated. The aim of the current retrospective study was to investigate the clinical and biological phenotypes and outcome of this association in a large series of recent patients. Twenty patients (50% men) were included. Median age at sarcoidosis and ITP diagnosis was 36 (range, 10-83 yr) and 38 (range, 21-83 yr) years, respectively. In 11 of 20 (55%) patients, sarcoidosis onset preceded ITP (median interval, 48 mo; range, 6-216 mo). In 5 of 20 (25%) patients, the 2 conditions occurred concomitantly. In 4 of 20 (20%) patients, ITP onset preceded sarcoidosis (median interval, 68 mo; range, 15-153 mo). In 4 cases, sarcoidosis and ITP were not concomitant, since 1 condition was cured before the other was declared. In 12 of 20 (60%) patients there was a simultaneous onset or relapse of both ITP and sarcoidosis. Sarcoidosis phenotype was characterized by an acute onset in 40% of patients. The visceral involvement included thoracic sites in 19 of 20 (95%) patients and extrathoracic sites in 16 of 20 (80%) patients. At ITP onset, median platelet count was 11 × 10/L (range, 3-90); 17 (85%) patients had a platelet count <30 × 10/L. Seven (35%) patients had a bleeding score >8 without visceral bleeding.Nineteen of the 20 (95%) patients were treated specifically for ITP. After the first-line therapy (prednisone at 1 mg/kg per day for at least 3 consecutive weeks in all patients; with IVIg in addition for 10 patients with severe bleeding score), 12 of 19 (63%) patients achieved a complete response, 6 (31.5%) had a partial response, and only 1 patient failed to respond. At the end of ITP follow-up (median, 70 mo; range, 12-142 mo), 18 (90%) patients achieved a complete response, 1 achieved a partial response, and 1 had no response. After a median follow-up of 105 months, 13 of 20 (65%) patients had persistent sarcoidosis requiring prolonged therapy, and thus sarcoidosis represented the main long-term concern. Main conclusions were 1) ITP presentation was usually severe, but response to treatment was favorable in almost all cases, with no death and no severe bleeding, in contrast with older reports, 2) sarcoidosis was remarkable for the high proportion of cases with an acute onset, a chronic course, and the need for prolonged prednisone therapy, 3) sarcoidosis and ITP onset and evolution were not always synchronous.

Objective: To construct the anti-lung tumor gene differentially expressed bank of wild mouse and to explore the mechanisms of the TW wild mouse suppressing the occurring of lung tumor., Methods: Using suppression subtractive hybridization (SSH) technique, the differentially expressed genes between TAF1 mouse and A/wy mouse were selected out and the subtracted cDNA bank was constructed. 166 clones were performed DNA sequencing and then were assayed by blast programme., Results: Among the blast results of 166 differentially expressed clones, 87 known genes (mRNA or cDNA) were in homology with 134 clones and were divided into 7 classifications according to the biological role.14 DNA fragments were in homology with 32 clones, in which 20 clones were in homology with 9 mouse DNA sequences, 2 clones were in homology with one bacterial gene sequences and 3 clones were clone vector., Conclusion: With SSH technique, the anti-lung tumor gene differentially expressed bank of wild mouse are successfully constructed.

Aim: To detect the hepatotoxic pyrrolizidine alkaloids (HPA) in the genus Ligularia Cass.., Methods: The alkaloid extracts of Ligularia plant materials were detected and analyzed by the method of combination of TLC, and LC/MSn., Results: Among 22 species of Ligularia Cass., HPA were detected in 18 species with LC/MSn, and no HPA was detected in the remaining 4 species., Conclusion: HPA was first detected with LC/MSn in L. tongelensis and other 15 species of Ligularia Cass.; HPA from these plants should be isolated, separated and identified and it is necessary to study the activities and toxicities of the HPA. The types and kinds of HPA from different species and sources are different, they should be detected separately.

Objective: To study the resource and the quality of wild Corydalis yanhusuo distributed in China., Method: Distribution was observed and samples of wild C. yanhusuo were collected and qualities were evaluated by determining six main alkaloids contained in the samples., Result: The main distribution of wild Corydalis yanhusuo was in the hills around middle and lower reaches of Yangtze River. Its distributive areas were continuously decreasing. The alkaloids contents in the samples varied among different populations., Conclusion: The alkaloids contents in wild populations of C. yanhusuo are diverse. The main kinds of alkaloids in some wild populations are higher than cultivated ones, which are valuable for breeding. The wild C. yanhusuo propagate well, however they are endangered due to environment problem, and should be protected.

Aim: To study the analgesic effect of endomorphin-1 (EM-1)., Methods: The experiment was performed in rats and mice to study the analgesic effect of intraperitoneal (ip) injection of EM-1 with tail stimulation-vocalization test, writhing test, adjuvant arthritis, and neuropathic pain model and to compare it with the analgesic effects produced by intracerebroventricular (icv) and intrathecal (it) administrations., Results: 1) EM-1 raised the pain threshold dose-dependently in tail stimulation-vocalization test in rats and inhibited the writhing responses induced by ip acetic acid in mice. EM-1 also decreased the hyperalgesia in both adjuvant arthritis and neuropathic pain model. 2) The analgesic effect induced by central (icv and it) administration of EM-1 was faster and more powerful than that induced by peripheral (ip) administration. 3) The analgesic effect of EM-1 was reversed by naloxone (opioid receptor antagonist), as well as by cyprodime (mu-opioid receptor selective antagonist). Repeated administrations of EM-1 induced tolerance., Conclusion: EM-1 had a definite analgesic effect and the analgesic effect of EM-1 was mediated by central mu-opioid receptor.

The hypothalamic suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) is a most important circadian pacemaker, which controls physiological and behaviour rhythm in mammals. SCN owns a intrinsic rhythm itself, and is entrained by photoperiodic signal and some endogenous chemical substances. Melatonin (MEL) is secreted by pineal gland, which is regulated by SCN. MEL triggers the second and third message systems, and regulates SCN circadian activity through high affinity MEL receptor within SCN. This regulation is time-sensitive.

The effects of serotonin (5-HT) receptor agonists and antagonists on the spontaneous discharge of suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) neurons were investigated using rat hypothalamic slice. It was found that: (1) the SCN neurons showed a persistent rhythm in the spontaneous discharge rate, which was higher during the light phase than during the dark phase; (2) the effects of 5-HT on SCN neurons was inhibitory in nature and the sensitivity of SCN neurons to 5-HT during the light phase was lower than that during the dark phase; (3) both 5-HT and 5-HT(1/7) receptor agonist, (+/-)-8-hydroxy-2-(DL-N-propylamino) tetralin hydrobromide, could inhibit the spontaneous discharge of SCN neurons. This inhibitory effect could be blocked by 5-HT(2/7) receptor antagonist ritanserin and putative 5-HT(7) receptor antagonists clozapine, but neither by selective 5-HT(2) receptor antagonist ketanserin, nor by 5-HT(1) receptor antagonist pindolol. It was suggested that the inhibitory effect of 5-HT on the spontaneous discharge of SCN neurons in rat hypothalamic slice is mediated by 5-HT(7) receptor subtype.

Spontaneous firing of suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) neurons and the effect of melatonin (MEL) were examined in hypothalamic slices made from pinealectomized rats or from the rats exposed to constant light. The results are as follows. (1) Under normal light cycle (light dark=12 12), SCN neurons displayed a circadian rhythm in spontaneous discharges. A peak about 8.3 Hz was presented at CT (circadian time) 6 8 and a trough about 3.8 Hz at CT18 20. The circadian rhythm persisted after pinealectomy, but disappeared after constant light exposure. (2) The response of SCN neurons to MEL was mainly inhibitory. Under normal light exposure, the inhibitory proportion was higher during the subjective day with the largest proportion of about 42% at CT8 10, and was lower during the subjective night with the largest proportion of about 26% at CT22 24. Under both constant light exposure and pinealectomy, the circadian rhythm of the response of SCN neurons to MEL disappeared. (3) The inhibitory effect of MEL on spontaneous discharges of SCN neurons was blocked by ML-1 receptor antagonist luzindole, but not by ML-2 receptor antagonist prazosin. The above results suggest that pineal gland, as a regulator of the organization of circadian rhythm, regulates the circadian rhythm of SCN neurons at two responsive time windows (CT8 10 and CT22 24) through high affinity ML-1 receptors in SCN.

The effect of dorsal raphe nucleus (DR) stimulation on the unit discharge of suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) neurons was studied and analyzed pharmacologically in the Wistar rats. Experimental results showed that DR stimulation could significantly inhibit the light-induced discharge of SCN neurons. Pharmacologically, this inhibition could be enhanced by monoamine oxidase inhibitor pargyline, attenuated by 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) synthesis inhibitor parachlorophenylalanine and blocked by 5-HT receptor antagonist cyproheptadine. It was suggested that the inhibitory effect of DR stimulation on the light-sensitive SCN neuron discharge might be mediated by 5-HT.
