In Pakistan, like other developing countries, utilization of family planning methods is a serious public health concern among married women. Researchers in the study focused on utilization of family planning methods among married women and their exposure to media messages. The researchers used retrospective analysis of secondary data of 3334 married women. Our research findings reveal that married women have a very limited access to media service messages promoting utilization of family planning methods. It is discussed that women with exposure to media messages about the utilization of family planning significantly utilized birth control behavior than women who had not heard and seen any media message. The authors concluded that married women in the country particularly in rural areas have a very limited access to media messages promoting family planning which causes non-utilization of family planning methods. It is recommended that different programs and awareness messages on media should be started to promote family planning and married women's access to media programs should be ensured. The argument for a female advantage in word list learning is often based on partial observations that focus on a single component of the task. Using a large sample (N = 4403) of individuals 13–97 years of age from the general population, we investigated whether this advantage is consistently reflected in learning, recall, and recognition and how other cognitive abilities differentially support word list learning. A robust female advantage was found in all subcomponents of the task. Semantic clustering mediated the effects of short-term and working memory on long-delayed recall and recognition, and serial clustering on short-delayed recall. These indirect effects were moderated by sex, with men benefiting more from reliance on each clustering strategy than women. Auditory attention span mediated the effect of pattern separation on true positives in word recognition, and this effect was stronger in men than in women. Men had better short-term and working memory scores, but lower auditory attention span and were more vulnerable to interference both in delayed recall and recognition. Thus, our data suggest that auditory attention span and interference control (inhibition), rather than short-term or working memory scores, semantic and/or serial clustering on their own, underlie better performance on word list learning in women. The Intelligibility in Context Scale (ICS) is a parent-report screening tool used to measure parents' perceptions of children's functional intelligibility. This tool has been translated into over 60 languages and found to have a good reliability and validity. The purpose of the current study was to translate the ICS into Sinhala (the ICS-SIN), the main language spoken by the Sinhalese people in Sri Lanka, and to validate it with both typically developing (TD) children and children with repaired cleft lip and/or palate (CLP). The translation process followed the forward-backward-forward method. A total of 88 parents of TD children and children with CLP aged 12–15 years old (TD n = 50, CLP n = 38) completed the ICS-SIN questionnaire. Parents of TD and CLP children reported their children's speech as most intelligible to parents and least intelligible to strangers. The ICS-SIN had high internal consistency for both groups (TD α = 0.87, p < 0.05, CLP α = 0.97, p < 0.05). The ICS-SIN total scores and item scores showed significant correlations, indicating a good construct validity. TD participant group's ICS-SIN average mean scores (M = 4.88, SD = 0.29) were significantly higher compared to the CLP ICS-SIN average mean scores (M = 4.64, SD = 0.67) and varied according to gender in both groups, suggesting good discriminant validity. The ICS-SIN has overall good psychometric properties. Therefore, this tool has the potential to be used as a valid parent-rating screening tool for clinical and research purposes in Sri Lanka. Purpose: Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) provides an alternative means of communication for individuals who are unable to effectively communicate using spoken language. The present study seeks to investigate the role of proximity in facilitating AAC (specifically Speech Generating Devices; SGD) use in a homogeneous population: ambulatory school-aged children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Method: Twelve school-age children with ASD who use an SGD as their primary mode of communication participated in the study. The percentage of time the child was within the proximity of their device was calculated over nine videotaped sessions and data logging provided information regarding device use over an 18-week period. Result: Children were in proximity to their device 65% of the time. There was a significant positive correlation between percentage of time in proximity to device and the average minutes of device use on the day video recorded. Exploratory analyses revealed that communicative abilities may be more connected to proximity than school context. Conclusion: These results support the importance of developing a program for assuring device proximity in order to encourage consistent device use in minimally verbal ambulatory school-age children with ASD. This study investigated the association of resilience on caregiver burden and quality of life in informal caregivers of patients with severe traumatic musculoskeletal injuries. A prospective cohort study of eligible caregivers and acutely injured trauma patients was conducted during 2018 in South East Queensland, with follow-up 3 months after patient discharge. Resilience was examined using the 10-item Connor Davidson Resilience Scale. The primary outcomes, caregiver burden and quality of life were measured respectively, using the Caregiver Strain Index and the Short Form Version 12 Health Survey. Baseline measures were completed with fifty-three (77%) patient/carer dyads. Thirty-eight (28%) were available for follow up at 3 months. Significant reductions from baseline were found at follow up, for levels of resilience, mental health, physical exercise and community support. In multiple regression models, caregiver resilience at follow-up independently predicted lower caregiver burden (β = −0.74, p = 0.008) and higher levels of patient physical health and function (β = −0.69, p = 0.003). Upon commencing informal care, caregivers' resilience, mental health and support systems are adversely affected. Higher levels of caregiver resilience appear to be protective against caregiver burden and declines in patient physical function. Early evaluation of caregivers' resilience, their physical and mental health and socio-ecological networks could improve carer and patient health outcomes. After 3 months of providing informal care to severely injured musculoskeletal trauma patients, there are apparent declines in their mental health, resilience, community support and physical activity levels. However, those with higher levels of resilience compared to lower levels could be protected against caregiver burden. Higher caregiver resilience could also prevent declines in patients' physical function. The rehabilitation of severe trauma patients should additionally include routine assessment and management of informal caregivers with the aim to prevent caregiver burden. Early clinical assessment of caregiver resilience using a valid resilience measurement tool could identify caregivers at risk of caregiver burden and flag vulnerable caregivers for ongoing support in the community. Early assessment of caregivers' physical and mental health and health related behaviours could flag the need for health promotion interventions aimed at supporting caregivers' physical and mental health. To evaluate posturography measurements, and their association with other clinical tests used for cervicogenic dizziness diagnosis, in a cohort of subjects suffering from cervicogenic dizziness, compared with healthy subjects. Ninety-three cervicogenic dizziness patients and 98 age- and gender-matched healthy subjects underwent video-Head impulse test, posturography testing, evaluation of cervical spine movements by means of cervical range of motion goniometer and self-report and performance measures, including Dizziness Handicap Inventory, Neck Disability Index, Neck Pain Intensity, Tampa Scale for Kinesiophobia and Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale. Cervicogenic dizziness patients demonstrated significant increases in classical posturography parameters (i.e., surface and length) and in power spectra values within middle and high-frequency interval depicting balance control alterations especially due to proprioceptive integration changes. Furthermore, decreases in degrees of cervical range of motion and increases of self-report and performance measures – highlighting significant complaints of subjective feeling of dizziness – were found in these patients when compared with healthy subjects. Multiple correlations were found between posturography testing and cervical range of motion and Dizziness Handicap Inventory as well as between different self-report and performance measures in cervicogenic dizziness patients. The implementation of posturography – including power spectra analysis - coupled with appropriate exclusion of other disorders, may represent a useful tool in improving cervicogenic dizziness assessment in terms of cost, time consumption and correlation with other measurements. Uncertainties in diagnostic assessment of cervicogenic dizziness reflect doubts regarding the causes underpinning the symptoms of imbalance, unsteadiness, and disorientation. Posturography measurement is a low-cost, time-sparing technique and its implementations have proven to be useful in detecting significant alterations in body sway during perturbating situations. Implementation of power spectra analysis on posturography testing may represent a useful tool in improving cervicogenic dizziness assessment also in terms of rehabilitative treatment follow-up. Objectives: Community, school, family, and individual factors protect against mental illness in general samples of adolescents. How these assets apply to Somali youth resettled to the United States (U.S.), a group with significant trauma exposure, remains unclear. We aimed to quantify which protective factors are associated with lower prevalence of depressive symptoms, suicidality, and self-injury among Somali youth in the U.S. compared with their non-Hispanic white peers. Design: Participants consisted of 8th, 9th, and 11th grade respondents to the 2016 Minnesota Student Survey, an anonymous school-administered statewide survey with 85.5% school district participation, who identified as Somali ethnicity (n = 1552) or as non-Hispanic white (n = 80,583). Multivariable logistic regression assessed odds of depressive symptoms, suicidal ideation and attempts, and self-harm, using eight protective factors (i.e. internal developmental assets, school engagement, empowerment, and family and teacher connectedness, caring adults and after-school activity frequency and quality) as independent variables. Models were run separately for Somali and white youth. Results: Somali youth reported similar rates of depressive symptoms, but lower levels of suicidal ideation or attempts and self-harm behaviors than their white peers (p < 0.001). All eight protective factors were associated with outcomes in the expected direction for white youth. For Somali youth, internal developmental assets (aOR 0.79, 95% CI: 0.65–0.97), empowerment (aOR 0.58, 95% CI: 0.45–0.73), family connectedness (aOR 0.60, 95% CI: 0.51–0.71), perception of caring adults in the community (aOR: 0.84, 95% CI: 0.76–0.92), and quality of after-school activities (aOR: 0.72, 95% CI: 0.61–0.86) were protective against depressive symptoms, with similar patterns for other outcomes. Other school factors protected Somali youth less consistently. Conclusions: Previously established protective factors against mental illness, particularly school factors, do not universally apply to Somali youth. To verify the association between Human Activity Profile and functional capacity, functional class and systolic function of the patients with Chagas heart disease (CHD). Sixty-two patients with CHD were evaluated by echocardiography, maximal exercise testing and Human Activity Profile questionnaire. The sample was stratified, according to the values of peak oxygen uptake (low or normal), functional class (symptomatic or asymptomatic), and left ventricular ejection fraction (preserved or systolic dysfunction). Linear regression and two-group comparisons analyses were used. Receiver-operating characteristic analysis was used to determine different cutoff values of the Human Activity Profile for low peak oxygen uptake prediction. Peak oxygen uptake was an independent predictor of Human Activity Profile (R2-adjusted = 0.27). Patients with low peak oxygen uptake had lower scores in Human Activity Profile [difference of 6.9 (95%CI 2.5–11.4)] than those with normal peak oxygen uptake. Symptomatic patients also showed lower scores when compared to the asymptomatic [difference of 6.2 (95%CI 1.7–10.8)]. There was no difference between left ventricular ejection fraction classes. The Human Activity Profile score of 76.5 was the optimal cut point value in predicting low peak oxygen uptake (sensitivity = 66.0% and specificity = 71.8%). The Human Activity Profile questionnaire is associated with functional capacity of patients with CHD and is able to identify individuals with low peak oxygen uptake. Functional impairment is one of the most common clinical findings in all stages and is an important predictor of poor prognosis of the Chagas heart disease; A patient-derived measure of functional capacity is potentially useful in the setting of the Chagas heart disease; The Human Activity Profile questionnaire is effective in the identification of patients with Chagas heart disease with functional impairment and may be a valid method for functional evaluation. The purpose of this study was to evaluate associations among depressive symptoms, trust of healthcare provider, and health behavior in adolescents who live in a rural area. Two hundred twenty-four adolescents aged 14–19 years old attending public high school in the Midwestern United States were surveyed. Results showed a diagnosis of depression, trust of healthcare provider, health awareness, and stress management predicted depressive symptoms in adolescents living in a rural area. Healthcare providers should take extra care to promote trust in the healthcare provider-patient relationship with adolescents and to follow guidelines for annual screening of adolescents for depressive symptoms. Anxiety sensitivity (AS) is a multidimensional construct associated with the etiology and maintenance of panic disorder (PD) symptoms. However, only a few studies have evaluated whether cognitive-behavioral group therapy (CBGT) can modify the condition. The objective of this study was to evaluate the impact of CBGT on AS in patients with PD and to analyze AS and its dimensions as predictors of response to CBGT. In the present clinical trial, an intervention group (n = 37) attended 12 CBGT sessions, while a control group (n = 52) did not receive any intervention. The severity of symptoms and of AS were evaluated before and after CBGT in the intervention group and once in the control group. Significant improvement occurred in all specific PD symptoms and in general anxiety and depressive symptoms. Furthermore, AS scores reduced significantly after intervention. This study confirmed that AS is higher in patients with more severe PD. The effectiveness of CBGT for reducing the physical, cognitive, and social dimensions of AS was also observed, supporting the hypothesis of a positive impact of therapy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aim: The purpose of the present project was to translate the Overall Assessment of the Speaker's Experience of Stuttering (OASES) to Swedish, and to compare the results with available international data. Method: The Swedish versions of OASES-A, OASES-T and OASES-S were administered to 80 adults, 27 teenagers and 32 children who stutter, respectively. The overall impact scores and the impact scores for each of the four sections of the instrument were analyzed in relation to other studies involving the OASES. Results: The results revealed that all three Swedish versions of OASES had normally distributed outcomes and that they were reliable and valid. The overall impact scores for adults (2.33), teenagers (2.60) and children (2.28) all fell within Impact Rating Moderate. The mean overall impact score for OASES-A-S was significantly lower than corresponding data from USA, Australia and Japan (p <.01). There was no difference between Swedish and American teenagers, or between Swedish and American or Dutch schoolchildren. Conclusion: There seems to be cultural differences in the experience of negative consequences associated with stuttering. This suggests that cultural aspects should be carefully considered in assessment, treatment, and research involving individuals who stutter. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study aimed to compare the bone-mineral-density (BMD), vitamin-D (25(OH)D), serum-calcium and serum-phosphorus levels between female athletes engaged in weight-bearing and non-weight-bearing-sport, and to evaluate possible associations among studied variables. Study involved top-level female athletes (age: 16.9 ± 4.4 years) involved in non-weight-bearing- (swimming; n = 14)), and weight-bearing-sport (artistic gymnastic; n = 17). The variables included the BMD of left femoral neck (measured by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry), 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels (25(OH)D), body height, body mass, body-mass-index, serum-phosphorus, and serum-calcium levels. Sufficiency for 25(OH)D (>75 nmol/L) was observed in 32.3% of the studied athletes (43% and 23% for swimmers and gymnasts, respectively). The studied athletes had appropriate BMD, with higher BMD in gymnasts compared to swimmers (1.24 ± 0.11 and 0.85 ± 0.09 g/cm2; t-test: 10.26, p < 0.01). Serum-phosphorus was higher in gymnasts (1.46 ± 0.17 and 1.27 ± 1.36 mmol/L, t-test: 2.78, p < 0.01. Serum-phosphorus levels were lower in athletes with 25(OH)D sufficiency (t-test: 2.31, p = 0.03). The 25(OH)D was not correlated to BMD (Pearson's r = −0.18, −0.14, −0.28, all p > 0.05, for total sample, gymnasts and swimmers, respectively). Although 25(OH)D was not correlated with BMD, in further investigations other assays of vitamin-D status (i.e. the bioavailability of the vitamin-D) should be included. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: The aims of this study were to translate and culturally adapt The Pelvic Girdle Questionnaire to Swedish, and to evaluate the construct and discriminative validity. Materials and methods: A translation and cultural adaptation process was performed according to international guidelines. Pilot tests were conducted among 16 women during pregnancy and post-partum. Analysis of the construct and discriminative validity of the Swedish version of the Pelvic Girdle Questionnaire was performed in a sample of 177 pregnant women suffering from pain in the lumbo-pelvic area. Participants completed the Pelvic Girdle Questionnaire along with Oswestry Disability Index, numeric rating scales for pain intensity and for pelvic girdle pain concerns. Results: The Swedish version of the Pelvic Girdle Questionnaire showed high internal consistency with Cronbach's alphas between 0.82 and 0.96, good convergent validity with high correlations with the Oswestry Disability Index and the pain intensity numeric rating scale, whereas moderate correlation was shown between the concerns numeric rating scale and the other instruments as hypothesized. Receiver operating characteristic curves showed good discriminatory capacity for women in need of treatment. Conclusions: The Swedish version of the Pelvic Girdle Questionnaire has patient acceptability. It has good construct and discriminative validity for measurements of consequences of pregnancy-related pelvic girdle pain among Swedish speaking women. Pregnancy-related pelvic girdle pain may be disabling and long-lasting, however treatable when identified. The Pelvic Girdle Questionnaire is the only condition-specific, reliability tested and validated questionnaire for pelvic girdle pain. The Swedish version of the Pelvic Girdle Questionnaire has patient acceptability, good construct validity for pelvic girdle pain among Swedish speaking women, and shows good discriminative capacity for women in need of treatment. Aims: This study aimed to investigate motor performance in children with cystic fibrosis (CF) and the relationship with respiratory and anthropometric outcome measures. Methods: A cross-sectional exploratory study investigated 12 children with CF, mean (SD) age 6.17 (0.67) years, using the Movement Assessment Battery for Children 2nd edition (MABC-2), spirometry, body weight, height, body mass index, and age-related anthropomorphic z-scores. Results: MABC-2 total scores indicated 9/12 (75%) children performed below average (<50th percentile), of which 4/12 children (33.3%) had motor delay and 2/12 (16.7%) were at risk for motor delay. The balance subscale showed the lowest scores, with 5/12 (41.7%) participants performing at or below the 5th percentile and a median (IQR) percentile score of 9.00 (5.00–62.50). A significant negative correlation was found between the manual dexterity subscale and both height and height for age z-scores (p = 0.017 and p = 0.019, respectively), as well as peak expiratory flow in liter (p = 0.027). The balance subscale scores were positively correlated with forced expiratory volume in %predicted (p = 0.048). No other significant correlations were found. Conclusion: Children with CF may be at risk for delayed motor development, particularly their balance skills. Poor lung function might affect motor development but further research is recommended. Black and Latino men who have sex with men (MSM) are disproportionately affected by childhood sexual abuse (CSA). Investigating these histories is often confounded by underreporting and varied definitions of abuse. Unrecognized abuse may manifest in unhealthy ways, specifically psychological distress, substance use, and high-risk sexual behaviors. Black and Hispanic/Latino MSM in New York City discussed formative sexual experiences in in-person interviews. Eligible men reported a sexual experience occurring before age 16 with a man or woman 18 or older at the time. Among interviewees (n = 61), men living with HIV were significantly younger at the time of their first sexual experience with a male partner compared to HIV-negative men. Approximately half of interviewees (47.5%) scored at or above the diagnostic cutoff for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Hispanic/Latino men had increased odds of scoring at or above the diagnostic cutoff for PTSD compared to Black non-Hispanic men. Further, nearly half of interviewees (46%) scored at or above the diagnostic cutoff for harmful drug use or possible drug dependence. Study findings have implications for future research using an indirect approach to uncovering potential sexual abuse during childhood, and associations with adult health outcomes. Exhaustive exercise induces various disturbances of homeostasis, with impaired bioenergetics often associated with strenuous muscular work. However, no study so far validated serum biomarkers of creatine metabolism vs. traditional markers of exhaustive exercise and fatigue. Here, we investigated how well changes in serum guanidinoacetic acid (GAA), creatine and creatinine correlate with responses in blood lactate, creatine kinase, interleukin-6 and cortisol in 11 young active men (age 23.2 ± 3.7 years; VO2max 49.5 ± 5.4 ml/kg/min) exposed to exhaustive exercise. All participants were subjected to running at individual running speed at anaerobic threshold until exhaustion, with venous blood drawn at baseline and during an exercise session at 5-min intervals. Running-to-exhaustion markedly affected serum GAA and creatine levels, with circulating GAA increased for 5.3 ± 8.5%(95% CI, −0.4 to 11.0), and serum creatine elevated by 33.9 ± 21.8% (95% CI, 19.3 to 48.6) compared to baseline levels (P ≤ 0.05). In addition, moderate-to-strong positive linear correlations were found between exhaustive exercise-induced changes in serum cortisol and GAA levels (r = 0.79; P = 0.03), and cortisol and creatine concentrations (r = 0.81; P = 0.03). This suggests a link between cortisol and heavy exercise-induced impaired bioenergetics, with future studies needed to evaluate a cause-and-effect interconnection between cortisol and GAA-creatine axis. This study examines variables associated with behavior for obtaining prescription medications with or without doctors' prescriptions following direct-to-consumer prescription medication advertisement (DTCA) exposure. Data were analyzed from 631 college students. We found that viewing traditional or cable television DTCA was associated with lower agreement for obtaining prescription medications from a doctor. Reading social media DTCA print content on Twitter was associated with higher agreement for obtaining a prescription medication without a doctor's prescription. Aim: This study was conducted to evaluate Turkish nurses' attitudes, awareness and practices regarding reproductive health needs of individuals with schizophrenia. Method: The sample of this descriptive study consisted of 96 psychiatric nurses and 90 nurses and midwives working in family health centers who agreed to participate. The data were presented as numbers and percentages, and chi-square analyses were used to compare the groups. Findings: Although the majority of nurses stated that family planning education should be given to individuals with schizophrenia, to both genders and to both single and married patients, the proportion of those who give family planning education is only 23.5%. Of the nurses, 58.8% recommend tubal ligation as a method of family planning for individuals with schizophrenia, 39.6% of nurses think that involuntary abortion or sterilization for individuals with schizophrenia is necessary even if they do not support it culturally, and 20.3% of nurses provide sexual health counseling to individuals with schizophrenia. It appears that nurses, as members of society, do not approve of marriage or parenting by individuals with schizophrenia. Result: This study found that both nurses working in primary care and psychiatric clinics had negative attitudes towards the reproductive health of individuals with schizophrenia. Background: Diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN) not only produces severe pain, tingling, and numbness sensation in the involved limbs, but also limits physical function due to loss of sensation. There are no recommended methods for clinical situations to measure these signs and symptoms. Studies with high methodological quality use the modified Brief Pain Inventory for Diabetic Peripheral Neuropathic pain (mBPI-DPN) scale and the short form Screening of Activity Limitations and Safety Awareness (sSALSA) scale for measuring these symptoms in DPN population. In order to capture a real change in the variables of interest, the psychometric properties of that measure should be within acceptable limits. As these two measures were not assessed for all of the psychometric properties, there was a need for further evaluation. Methods: Data were collected (n = 38 patients) in a longitudinal cohort study. Test-retest reliability (0-4 weeks) and Responsiveness- Minimal Clinically Important Difference (MCID) (0-12 weeks) were calculated between two sessions. Convergent validity was assessed (between mBPI-DPN pain interference and sSALSA scale). Results: Both measures demonstrated acceptable test-retest reliability (mBPI-DPN scale: ICC = 0.61, SEM = 12.92; the sSALSA scale: ICC = 0.81, SEM = 4.88) and convergent validity (Spearman's correlation coefficient r = 0.62). The computational methods used in different methodologies to calculate MCID for the mBPI-DPN and the sSALSA scale were varied, hence the magnitude of derived MCID scores also varied. Conclusions: Our study have provided evidence to add to the scientific basis surrounding the use of mBPI-DPN and sSALSA scales in DPN population, but standardization of these measures in a larger population is required [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aims: Rehabilitation managers in skilled nursing facilities need a clear understanding of regulatory guidelines to support successful payment of clinically appropriate and medically necessary services. Methods: A cross-sectional online survey was conducted to determine perceived and actual knowledge of 374 rehabilitation managers regarding Medicare documentation and reimbursement guidelines. Results: Respondents perceived their overall knowledge to be much higher than their actual knowledge. Scores were significantly different by practitioner level, gender, and across categories of level of education, current clinician manager role, and hours of employer-sponsored formal training related to Medicare guidelines. There is a lack of documentation about how nursing students evaluate the debriefing phase in simulation in mental health nursing. The aim of this quantitative study was to describe nursing students' experiences of the debriefing phase after low-fidelity simulation activities in mental health nursing, and to investigate whether background data influence their experience. Data were collected using the "Debriefing Experience Scale" and analysed with descriptive and comparative tests. Students with more than 1 year's clinical praxis experienced significantly that debriefing helped them to clarify problems of communication when encountering persons suffering from psychosis compared to students who had less than 1 year of clinical praxis. The boarding of children and adolescents with identified psychiatric conditions at medical facilities has numerous negative effects on the patients and the systems that treat them. Efforts to minimize boarding times serves to increase patients’ access to appropriate levels of care, redirect medical resources to patients who need them most, and reduce safety risks to people and property. This study explores the role Clinical Social Workers can play in facilitation of care and highlights the advantages of a coordinated data collection process facilitated by the effective use of the Electronic Medical Record. A retrospective chart analysis of 100 patients admitted to the Emergency department at a pediatric hospital in Central Florida was conducted for patients seen between 1 January 2015 and 30 June 2016. The data suggest key correlates that may impact the boarding times of pediatric patients presenting in a psychiatric crisis and the average duration of boarding time in hours (M = 5.11, SD = 2.07) was found to be significantly lower than prior published studies in the adult and pediatric literature. Aims: To examine physical activity (PA) of older veterans with functional disability and their caregivers. Methods: Thirty-three older veterans (≥60 years) with functional disability (requiring assistance for activities of daily living) and their caregivers completed standardized questionnaires measuring comorbidity, sleep, depressive symptomatology, pain, caregiver burden, and functional disability. PA activity counts and sleep duration were measured using an activity monitor. Descriptive, analytic, and correlational analyses were performed. Results: PA was associated with sleep (veterans: rs = −0.38, P = 0.03; caregivers: rs = −0.54, P = 0.001) and caregiver burden (rs = 0.45, P = 0.02), but was not associated with the remaining factors of interest. Conclusions: The factors of interest chosen for study are known modifiers of older adult PA. The lack of association with many of the studied factors indicates that older veterans with functional disability and their caregivers may experience unique challenges (e.g., sleep and caregiver burden) to being active that subsequently require unique strategies for increasing PA. We examine the prevalence of the practice of applying fundal pressure in the second stage of labour, the technique used, and its impact on mother and infant health. This analytical cross-sectional study was conducted in a state hospital in the city of Bursa, Turkey with 350 women giving vaginal birth in gestational weeks 37–42. We found that fundal pressure is commonly applied but that this is done without a specific indication, that it is more associated with the performance of an episiotomy, and at the same time, the use of the technique does not have an adverse impact on maternal satisfaction or the health of the mother and infant. Health-care workers may experience moral distress when they are unable to act as they believe is ethically appropriate in their clinical work. A social worker-facilitated protocol called Reflective Debriefing was developed and tested for alleviating moral distress through regular debriefings with nursing staff on an intensive care unit (ICU). Forty-two ICU nurses completed a Moral Distress Scale-Revised (MDS-R) at the beginning and end of a 6-month period, during which time regular debriefings were offered. The overall level of moral distress on the ICU surveyed was found to be low to moderate. The top three most frequent situations causing moral distress reported by most nurses in this study were related to the provision of nonbeneficial care in the ICU. Participants reported gaining the most benefit from feeling empowered to constructively confront other staff members about truth-telling in giving a prognosis. Nurses’ overall response to the intervention was positive, with 100% of participants requesting to continue the Reflective Debriefing sessions either on a monthly or on an as-needed basis. The response to the intervention emphasized the importance of interprofessional collaboration to successfully combat moral distress among health-care workers and may protect them from burnout, detachment, and even quitting their profession. Background: Alcohol and substance use is prevalent in trauma patients admitted to hospital. Aim: Investigate the association between hospital admission and substance use for three different injury types among trauma patients according to age and gender. Method: Prospective cross-sectional emergency department study. The patients were divided into injury groups and compared with respect to gender, age, hospital admission, substance use, and blood alcohol level. Results: The study included 998 trauma patients, of whom 39% screened positive for substance use. Patients with head injury had a higher prevalence of alcohol use (29%). Patients with head injury and hazardous drug or alcohol use were less likely to stay in hospital for more than 24 hours (adjusted OR: 0.61, 95% CI: 0.41–0.93,p = .02), whereas patients with injuries to neck/thorax/abdomen and hazardous use had the highest risk of staying in hospital more than 24 hours (adjusted OR: 5.22, 95% CI: 1.47–18.76,p = .01). Injuries to pelvis/extremities were more common among women with medicine use. Conclusion: Patients with head injury and hazardous use were less likely to be admitted to hospital, whereas patients with injuries to the neck/thorax/abdomen and hazardous use were more likely to be admitted. Purpose: To examine how the right to participation according to Article 19 of the United Nations' Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNCRPD) is promoted by personal assistance use in Sweden across age, gender and eligible person categories. Method: Register data and data from a questionnaire were used (N=15,289). Principal component analysis was performed and the internal consistency was tested. Descriptive statistics (χ² test) were used across age, gender and eligible person categories and components. Results: An uneven distribution of personal assistance across the components Health and Care; Home, Leisure and Social Interaction; and Daily Occupation was found. Significant differences in personal assistance reported were found between children and adults, men and women and between the three eligible person categories. Conclusions: The discrepancy between reported and expected outcome of personal assistance indicates that Article 19 of the UNCRPD has not been met. The unequal access to participation across age, gender and eligible person categories would seem to further signify that the Act concerning Support and Service for Persons with Certain Functional Impairments is promoting activities of a caring nature rather than fulfilling Article 19 of the UNCRPD, i.e. ensuring full participation in society. The aim of this study was to explore associations between self-esteem, general self-efficacy, and the deep, strategic, and surface approaches to studying. Norwegian occupational therapy students (n = 125) completed questionnaires measuring study approaches, self-esteem, and general self-efficacy. Regression analyses were used to explore the direct relationships between self-esteem, general self-efficacy and the approaches to studying, after controlling for age, gender, prior higher education, and time spent on independent studying. General self-efficacy displayed positive associations with deep and strategic approaches to studying and a negative relationship with a surface approach to studying. Fatigue is considered to be one of the most reported symptoms experienced by children with cancer. A major aim of this study was to develop an Arabic version of the Pediatric Quality of Life (PedsQL) Multidimensional Fatigue Scale (child report) and to test its psychometric proprieties for the assessment of fatigue in Arabic children with cancer. The PedsQL Multidimensional Fatigue Scale (Arabic version) and the PedsQL TM 4.0 Generic Core scale (existing Arabic version) were completed by 70 Jordanian children with cancer. Cronbach’s alpha coefficients were found to be 0.90 for the total PedsQL Multidimensional Fatigue Scale (Arabic version), 0.94 for the general fatigue subscale, 0.67 for the sleep/rest fatigue subscale, and 0.87 for the cognitive fatigue subscale. The PedsQL Multidimensional Fatigue Scale scores correlated significantly with the PedsQL TM 4.0 Generic Core scale and demonstrated good construct validity. The results demonstrate excellent reliability and good validity of the PedsQL Multidimensional Fatigue Scale (Arabic version) for children with cancer. This is the first validated scale that assesses fatigue in Arabic children with cancer. Purpose:Balance impairment is a common sensorimotor symptom in mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI). We designed an affordable, portable virtual reality (VR)-based balance screening device (Virtual Environment TBI Screen [VETS]), which will be validated relative to the Neurocom Sensory Organization Test (SOT) to determine if it can replace commonly used postural assessments. Methods:This preliminary study examines healthy adults (n = 56) and adults with mTBI (n = 11). Participants performed six upright postural tasks on the VETS and the SOT. Analysis of variance was used to determine between-group differences. Pearson’s correlations were used to establish construct validity. Known-groups approach was used to establish classification accuracy. Results:The mTBI cohort performed significantly worse than the healthy cohort on the new device (p = 0.001). The new device has 91.0% accuracy and an ROC curve with a significant area-under-the-curve (AUC = 0.865,p < 0.001). Conditions with dynamic visual stimulation were the most sensitive to health status. The SOT had an 84.8% accuracy and AUC =0.703 (p = 0.034). Conclusions:The new VR-based device is a valid measure for detecting balance impairment following mTBI and can potentially replace more expensive and cumbersome equipment. Assessments that test visual-vestibular processing, such as VETS, increase sensitivity to mTBI-related balance deficits, which can be used to guide rehabilitation.Implications for rehabilitationEmerging technology using virtual reality can be economically integrated into the clinical setting for easy testing of postural control in neurologically impaired populations.Tailoring postural assessments to include tasks that rely on visual and vestibular integration will increase the accuracy of detecting balance impairment following mild traumatic brain injury. Background:Millennium Development Goal 4, to reduce child mortality, can only be achieved by reducing stillbirths globally. A confluence of medical and sociocultural factors contribute to the high stillbirth rates in India. The psychosocial aftermath of stillbirth is a well-documented public health problem, though less is known of the experience for men, particularly outside of the Western context. Therefore, men's perceptions and knowledge regarding reproductive health, as well as maternal-child health are important.Methods:Key informant interviews (n = 5) were analyzed and 28 structured interviews were conducted using a survey based on qualitative themes.Results:Qualitative themes included men's dual burden and right to medical and reproductive decision making power. Wives were discouraged from expressing grief and pushed to conceive again. If not successful, particularly if a son was not conceived, a second wife was considered a solution. Quantitative data revealed that men with a history of stillbirths had greater anxiety and depression, perceived less social support, but had more egalitarian views towards women than men without stillbirth experience. At the same time fathers of stillbirths were more likely to be emotionally or physically abusive. Predictors of mental health, attitudes towards women, and perceived support are discussed.Conclusions:Patriarchal societal values, son preference, deficient women's autonomy, and sex-selective abortion perpetuate the risk for future poor infant outcomes, including stillbirth, and compounds the already higher risk of stillbirth for males. Purpose:To investigate between-leg differences in hip and thigh muscle strength and leg extensor power in patients with unilateral hip osteoarthritis. Further, to compare between-leg differences in knee extensor strength and leg extensor power between patients and healthy peers. Methods:Seventy-two patients (60–87 years) with radiographic and symptomatic hip osteoarthritis not awaiting hip replacement and 35 healthy peers (63–82 years) were included. Hip and thigh muscle strength and leg extensor power were measured in patients and knee extensor strength and leg extensor power in healthy. Results:The symptomatic extremity in patients was significantly (p < 0.05, pairedt-test) weaker compared with the non-symptomatic extremity for five hip muscles (8–17%), knee extensors (11%) and leg extensor power (19%). Healthy older adults had asymmetry in knee extensor strength (6%,p < 0.05) comparable to that found in patients, but had no asymmetry in leg extensor power. Conclusions:Patients had generalized weakening of the affected lower extremity and numerically the largest asymmetry was evident for leg extensor power. In contrast, healthy peers had no asymmetry in leg extensor power. These results indicate that exercise interventions focusing on improving leg extensor power of the symptomatic lower extremity and reducing asymmetry may be beneficial for patients with hip osteoarthritis.Implications for RehabilitationEven in patients with mild symptoms not awaiting hip replacement a generalized muscle weakening of the symptomatic lower extremity seems to be present.Between-leg differences in leg extensor power (force × velocity) appears to be relatively large (19%) in patients with unilateral hip osteoarthritis in contrast to healthy peers who show no asymmetry.Compared to muscle strength the relationship between functional performance and leg extensor power seems to be stronger, and more strongly related to power of the symptomatic lower extremity.Our results indicate that exercise interventions focusing on improving leg extensor power of the symptomatic lower extremity and reducing asymmetry may be beneficial for patients with mild symptoms not awaiting hip replacement. Purpose:The aim of this study was to test the validity and reliability of the translated Norwegian version of the Chronic Pain Acceptance Questionnaire (CPAQ-20) and the shorter version CPAQ-8 based on the same data. Method:The sample consisted of 120 women with chronic widespread musculoskeletal pain (CWP). The respondents completed CPAQ-20 and visual analogue scales (pain, fatigue, sleep problems and depression), General Health Questionnaire-12, The Pain Catastrophizing Scale, Fibromyalgia Impact Questionnaire and SF-8. Confirmatory factor analyses were performed on a one-factor baseline model, the previous validated CPAQ-20 and CPAQ-8 models, as well as an exploratory generated model based on the current sample. Results:The two-factor model of CPAQ-20 and a two-factor model of CPAQ-8 obtained adequate model fit and outperformed the baseline model. The exploratory factor, analysis-generated two-factor model obtained only a marginally better fit, supporting the two-dimensional model of CPAQ-20. CPAQ-20 and CPAQ-8 had Cronbach’s alphas between 0.75 (Pain Willingness subscales both versions) and 0.85. Both scales correlated significantly in the hypothesised direction with all the other scales. Conclusion:The Norwegian versions of CPAQ-20 and CPAQ-8 are reliable assessment tools with good construct validity for measurement of acceptance. To characterise timing of movements and evaluate performance effects of technique alterations in V2 ski skating, 13 elite male cross-country skiers (age, 23 ± 2 years; stature, 182 ± 6 cm; body mass, 76 ± 8 kg; V2 VO2max, 79.3 ± 4.4 mL · kg-1 · min-1) were tested four times during the preparation and competition phase on a roller ski treadmill. Each test consisted of submaximal intensities of exercise for determination of oxygen cost followed by one 1000-m performance test. Hip movement (from accelerometer data) and joint angles (2D video) were determined for high-intensity exercise (6° and 3.5 m · s-1; ~ 97-100% of VO2peak). Each ski thrust consisted of three phases: gliding phase (18-50% of cycle time), poling phase (50-70% of cycle time), and kick phase (70-78% of cycle time). Flexion/extension of the hip initiated all phases, followed by the respective joints in legs and arms. Mixed-model analysis, adjusting for systematic time-point effects, identified that both reduced vertical hip acceleration and increased cycle time gave a small likely reduction in oxygen cost and 1000-m time. Purpose:To evaluate whether improvements in physical function are related to changes in body composition after a three-month progressive resistance and balance exercise program among individuals approximately one to three years after stroke. Methods:In this randomized controlled trial, 43 community-dwelling subjects (65–85 years, mean age 73 ± 5 years, 73% men) were allocated to a progressive resistance and balance exercise program twice weekly for three months (intervention group [IG],n = 20) or a control group (n = 23). The main outcome measures were fat mass (kg) and fat-free mass (kg), as measured by bioelectrical impedance analyses (Tanita®). Physical function was measured using the six-minute walk test. Results:Complete case analyses revealed reduced fat mass in the IG compared with the control (−1.5 vs. (0).13% of body weight, respectively; effect size =0.62;p = 0.048). In contrast, no between-group difference in fat-free mass was observed. The six-minute walk test was improved (25 vs. −10 m, respectively, effect size =0.69,p = 0.039) at three months in favor of the IG. The reduced fat mass was associated with an improved six-minute walk test (r = 0.48,p = 0.038) in the IG. Conclusions:Three-month progressive resistance and balance training was associated with reduced fat mass, which was related to improvements in walking capacity in older adults approximately one year after stroke.Implications for rehabilitation  This three-month PRB group exercise program supported by motivational discussions and daily home-based exercises indicate the following:  • Improved walking capacity was associated with a reduction in fat mass.  • IGF-1 is reduced, possibly indicating improved insulin sensitivity. Physical activity is beneficial at all stages of life, and has been linked as a protective factor from obesity, and other chronic health conditions. Despite the benefits of physical activity, less than half of US children meet the current recommendations, and activity levels decline with age. When planning physical activity interventions, behavioural theories should be utilised, given the inherent benefits theory-based approaches possess. The purpose of this study was to investigate how constructs of the Integrative Theoretical Model (IM) are associated with physical activity and screen time among children (9 years ±1.2; n = 264). Using structural equation modeling, a final model proved to have a good fit (CFI = 0.989; TLI = 0.975; RMSEA = 0.043), and results indicated intentions and perceived behavioural control (PBC) explained 19.4% of the variance for physical activity, and attitudes, perceived norms, and PBC accounted for 62% of the variance of intentions. Furthermore, attitudes and perceived norms were negatively associated with total screen time, and accounted for 10% of the variance. Undulatory underwater swimming (UUS) is one of the major skills contributing to performance in competitive swimming. UUS has two phases- the upbeat is performed by hip extension and knee flexion, and the downbeat is the converse action. The purpose of this study was to determine which kinematic variables of the upbeat and downbeat are associated with prone UUS performance in an elite sample. Ten elite participants were filmed performing three prone 20 m UUS trials. Seven landmarks were manually digitised to calculate eighteen kinematic variables, plus the performance variable- horizontal centre of mass velocity (VCOM). Mean VCOM was significantly correlated with body wave velocity (upbeat r = 0.81, downbeat r = 0.72), vertical toe velocity (upbeat r = 0.71, downbeat r = 0.86), phase duration (upbeat r = -0.79), peak hip angular velocity (upbeat r = 0.73) and mean knee angular velocity (upbeat r = -0.63), all significant at P < 0.05. A multiple stepwise regression model explained 78% of variance in mean VCOM. Peak toe velocity explained 72% of the variance, and mean body wave velocity explained an additional 6%. Nursing program graduates rarely choose mental health nursing as a career. A quasi-experimental study was conducted to examine attitudes of 310 nursing students towards persons with mental illness. Students completed surveys on the first and last days of their program's psychiatric mental health nursing course. The pre- and post-test survey analysis indicated that students improved their attitude, knowledge and preparedness to care for persons with mental illness. However, students maintained little interest in working as a mental health nurse. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationships between athletes’ perceptions of the motivational climate (caring, task-, and ego-involving) to their levels of compassion, self-compassion, pride, and shame in a recreational sport setting. Athletes (N = 164) in a competitive Wiffle Ball tournament completed a survey. A canonical correlation analysis revealed one significant function indicating that athletes’ perceptions of a caring and task-involving motivational climate were associated with higher levels of authentic pride and lower levels of hubristic pride. PurposeTo assess psychometric properties of the problem checklist (PCL) in a sample of individuals with neurological and neuropsychiatric disorders many years after trauma; to identify factors that impact life satisfaction and promote functional competence after long-term disability.MethodCross-sectional, interview- and assessment-based study. Participants were community-dwelling adults with disabilities resulting from neurological and neuropsychiatric disorders (N = 53), who participated in a pre-vocational readiness and social skills training program. The Problem Checklist from the New York University Head Injury Family Interview (PCL), a battery of self-rated and clinician-rated measures of social/emotional status, and neuropsychological tests were main outcome measures.ResultsPCL is a valid and reliable instrument with acceptable psychometric properties (reliability coefficients for two scales and the total score are above (0.795). Use of maladaptive coping strategies in our sample was reflected in inverse relationship between depression and denial of disability, and in the tendency to overrate self-reported symptoms by participants with acquired trauma. Considerably lower self-ratings of symptoms across all PCL scales were seen in those of our participants who live with parents.ConclusionsThe study offers initial support for the use of PCL as a measure of long-term functional outcome in individuals with neurological and neuropsychiatric diagnoses. Background: Fear of physicians is associated with a variety of negative relationship and clinical outcomes. Culturally competent communication has been suggested as a way for physicians to reduce patient fear. Previous research has not, however, assessed whether patients’ perceptions of physicians’ cultural competence are associated with the level of felt fear. This study assessed associations between patients’ fear of physicians and their perceptions of physicians’ cultural competence in healthcare interactions. Method: In this cross-sectional study, a purposive sample of 306 patients were recruited from the patient base of a local clinic system with three locations, one rural, one suburban, and one urban in Appalachian Ohio. Using validated paper-and-pencil questionnaires, we assessed patients’ perceptions of physicians’ cultural competence in four domains (macro cultural issues, proxemics/chronemics, language issues, and patient-centeredness) as well as fear of physicians. Results: Fear of physicians was associated with perceptions that physicians’ accommodated cultural differences related to issues of personal space and time and with perceptions of physicians’ provision of patient-centered care. Other domains of intercultural competence indicated negative association, but were not significant. Conclusions: The findings of this study provide evidence that some forms of physician accommodation of cultural difference are associated with reduced fear of physicians. These findings have implications for promoting physicians' cultural competence in healthcare interactions. These implications, with a focus on patient-physician communication are discussed. The current research focuses on the 2013 polio outbreak in Israel as a case study to analyze the sources of information used in new media platforms, examining whether the new media have changed the ways in which we communicate about health issues. Specifically, we tracked and coded polio-related references on Hebrew news websites, blogs, forums, and Facebook posts. Overall, 24,388 polio-related references constituted our sampling frame. The findings suggest that there is a moderate-level correlation between the platform and the type of sources chosen by users. Beyond the differences between various platforms, we found that online information platforms rely not only on popular or pseudoscientific sources, but also on high-quality information. In fact, the analysis indicates that online news websites, forums, blogs, and Facebook posts create a unique blend of information, including scientific literature, medical professionals, and government representatives, as well as pseudoscientific research. These findings suggest a more optimistic view of the Internet as a source for health-related information in times of crises. Although the fact that members of the public are exposed to scientific sources does not indicate to what degree this affects their actual decision making. Introduction and aims: People’s behaviors after alcohol use are more extreme and alcohol has a narrowing effect on a person’s cognitive capacity. We tested this effect, making use of the Lost-Letter Technique (LLT), in which the return rate of “lost letters” by public mail is used to measure altruistic behavior. We hypothesized that return rates would be lower when people are under the influence of alcohol, and that an anti-alcohol prime in the address would even further decrease return rates. Design and methods: 768 letters were dropped, half of those at times when some degree of intoxication was likely versus when sober passers-by were common. Three different addressees were used to convey an anti-alcohol cue, a charitable cue, and a neutral cue. Results: The average response rate was 33.1%, and was significantly lower during late bar hours than during lunch hours (20.3% versus 45.8%). Also, when envelopes were found by people who were more likely to have consumed alcohol, anti-alcohol cues gained significantly lower response rates (12.7% versus 23.1%). Discussion and conclusions: This study confirms that alcohol use causes less altruistic behavior and different responses to alcohol-related cues, suggesting that LLT is a promising method to study people’s behavior. Objectives: To prospectively investigate the impact of transitions in informal caregiving on emotional well-being over two years in a large population study of older people. Methods: Information on provision of unpaid care in 2004/2005 and 2006/2007 was available for 6571 participants in the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing. Three well-being domains were also assessed on each occasion: life satisfaction (measured with the Satisfaction with Life Scale); quality of life (assessed with the CASP-19 scale); and depression symptoms (measured using the Centers for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale). Multivariable analyses of the impact on well-being of two-year caregiving transitions (caregiving entry and caregiving exit, or continued caring) were conducted separately for spousal/child carers and carers of other family/non-relatives. Results: Compared to non-caregiving, entry into spousal/child caregiving was associated with decline in quality of life (B = −1.60, p <.01) whereas entry into caregiving involving other kin relations increased life satisfaction (B = 1.02, p <.01) and lowered depression symptoms (B = −0.26, p <.05). Contrary to expectations, caregiving exit was related to increased depression in both spousal/child (B = 0.44, p <.01) and non-spousal/child (B = 0.25, p <.05) carers. Continued spousal/child caregiving was also related to decline in quality of life (B = −1.24, p <.05). Other associations were suggestive but non-significant. Conclusion: The emotional impact of different caregiving transitions in later life differs across kin relationships; notably, spousal and child carers' well-being was consistently compromised at every stage of their caregiving career over the two-year study period. In recent years, the study of racial microaggressions (or subtle forms of racial discrimination) has increased significantly in the social sciences, particularly highlighting the negative impact of racial microaggressions on individuals’ mental health. Despite this, there is a dearth of literature that has examined the relationship between racial microaggressions and physical and psychological health. Using two self-reported measures—the Racial and Ethnic Microaggressions Scale (REMS) and the RAND 36-Item Short Form Health Survey—with a diverse group of participants (N = 277), results suggest that racial microaggressions are significantly correlated with poorer health conditions. Furthermore, racial microaggressions were found to predict various types of physical health conditions, such as general health problems, pain, lower energy levels, and fatigue. Finally, different types of microaggressions (e.g., microaggressions in school or the workplace, environmental microaggressions) were found to be predictors of specific health issues. The Interpersonal Psychological Theory of suicide proposes that the interaction between Thwarted Belongingness, Perceived Burdensomeness, and Acquired Capability for Suicide (ACS) predicts proximal risk of death by suicide. Instruments to assess all three constructs are available. However, research on the validity of one of them, the acquired capability for suicide scale (ACSS), has been limited, especially in terms of its clinical relevance. This study aimed to explore the utility of the different versions of the ACSS in clinical assessment. Three versions of the scale were investigated, the full 20-item version, a 7-item version and a single item version representing self-perceived capability for suicide. In a sample of patients recruited from a clinic specialising in the treatment of suicidality and in a community sample, all versions of the ACSS were found to show reasonable levels of reliability and to correlate as expected with reports of suicidal ideation, self-harm, and attempted suicide. The item assessing self-perceived acquired capacity for suicide showed highest correlations with all levels of suicidal behaviour. However, no version of the ACSS on its own showed a capacity to indicate suicide attempts in the combined sample. It is concluded that the versions of the scale have construct validity, but their clinical utility is limited. An assessment using a single item on self-perceived ACS outperforms the full and shortened versions of ACSS in clinical settings and can be recommended with caution for clinicians interested in assessing this characteristic. This cross-sectional study has been conducted in a descriptive, correlational design in order to determine the correlation between sexual satisfaction and depressive symptoms. In this respect, sexual satisfaction and depression scores were assessed in 102 infertile couples in a Turkish university hospital. There was a positive and meaningful correlation between Beck Depression scores and educational status and monthly income of infertile women on the one hand, and among marriage, infertility, infertility treatment durations, and the number of assisted-reproduction treatments on the other hand. It was found that there were more sexual dysfunctions in women than in men and that they were affected more deeply. As a result, it might be suggested that infertile couples receive proper guidance from health professionals in the course of treatment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective:Previous research has shown that nostalgia, a sentimental longing for the past, leads to greater feelings of optimism, with other work demonstrating that optimistic thinking (general & health-orientated) is associated with better physical and psychological health. Integrating these two lines of research, the current studies examined whether nostalgia-induced health optimism promotes attitudes and behaviours associated with better physical well-being. Methods:Participants, in three experiments, were randomly assigned to write about either a nostalgic or ordinary event. Following this, everyone completed a measure of health optimism (Studies 1–3), measures of health attitudes (Study 2) and had their physical activity monitored over the course of 2 weeks (Study 3). Results:The results revealed that, in comparison to control conditions, nostalgic reverie led to greater health optimism (Studies 1–3). Further, heightened health optimism following nostalgic reflection led to more positive health attitudes (Study 2), and increased physical activity over a two-week period (i.e. Fitbit activity trackers; Study 3). Conclusions:These findings highlight the importance of nostalgia on health attitudes and behaviours. Specifically, this work suggests that nostalgia can be used as a mechanism to increase the importance, perceived efficacy and behaviour associated with better physical health. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: To determine if mTBI adversely affects the pupillary light reflex (PLR). Methods: The PLR was evaluated in mTBI and compared to normal individuals under a range of test conditions. Nine pupil parameters (maximum, minimum and final pupil diameter, latency, amplitude and peak and average constriction and dilation velocities) and six stimulus conditions (dim pulse, dim step, bright pulse, bright step, bright red step and bright blue step) were assessed in 32 adults with mTBI (21–60 years of age) and compared to 40 normal (22–56 years of age). The Neuroptics, infrared, DP-2000 binocular pupillometer was used (30 Hz sampling rate; 0.05 mm resolution) with binocular stimulation and recording. Results: Different test conditions allowed for discrimination of different parameters. For any of the given six test conditions, five-to-eight of the nine pupillary parameters were statistically different (p< 0.05) between the two diagnostic groups. The most promising parameters for diagnostic differentiation were constriction latency, all pupillary diameters, average constriction velocity and peak dilation velocity. Conclusions: MTBI adversely affects the PLR. This suggests an impairment of the autonomic nervous system.
