Aortic dissection is a major aortic catastrophe with a high morbidity and mortality risk, and thoracic endovascular repair (TEVAR) has recently been established as the preferred treatment option for promoting false lumen (FL) remodeling and improving hemodynamics in the true lumen. Complete thrombosis of the FL has been thought to be a prerequisite for healing of the aorta postdissection, whereas flow and pressurization of the FL caused by partial thrombosis are thought to contribute to late dilation and rupture. Therefore, it is important to anticipate FL remodeling outcomes of different TEVAR procedures to determine which one will favor complete FL thrombosis. In this paper, a spatio-temporal mathematical model is proposed to simulate thrombosis in dissection. Blood is treated as a multi-constituent mixture consisting of a linear fluid phase and a thrombus (solid) phase. The transport and reactions of chemical and biological species are incorporated using a system of coupled convection-reaction-diffusion equations to represent two interacting sub-processes in thrombosis: coagulation cascade and platelet activity. Computational fluid dynamic simulations of two in vivo problems were performed using the libraries of OpenFOAM: thrombus growth in an injured straight blood vessel and TEVAR induced thrombosis in a patient-specific acute type B aortic dissection for which multiple follow-up scans are available. For both problems, the simulated thrombus formation was consistent with experimental or clinical observations, indicating the potential applicability of this modeling approach to predict the progression of dissection in patient-specific phantoms and its further use to help surgeons personalize treatment strategy for dissection patients in the future. Quantitative assessment of the hemodynamic impact of carotid artery stenting (CAS) represents an important ingredient to understand the CAS long-term outcomes, which are still a matter of clinical debate. Although computational fluid dynamics (CFD) has been extensively used for the biomechanical analysis of carotid arteries in healthy and stenotic conditions, there are few contributions in the literature dealing with post-stenting conditions because (i) current medical images do not have sufficient resolution to accurately reconstruct the stent geometry, and (ii) the generation of a body-fitted mesh of the stent-artery configuration is cumbersome. Motivated by these considerations, the present study proposes a numerical approach able to implicitly account for the stent geometry in the post-operative patient-specific hemodynamic CFD analysis by introducing velocity penalty terms in the weak form of the equations governing blood flow in arteries. Such an approach allows us to compare different patient-specific CAS scenarios, ranging from a healthy carotid to a post-stenting configuration after the treatment of a severe stenosis, and paves the way for rapid CFD-based investigations of the hemodynamic impact of novel endovascular devices with complex grid designs. Thoracic endovascular repair (TEVAR) is a minimally invasive alternative to classical open-chest surgery for pathologies of thoracic aorta such as aneurysms or dissections. It consists of the deployment of one or more endografts to either exclude aneurysms pressurization or seal entry tears of dissection. It is a minimally invasive procedure, yet long-term efficacy is still to be demonstrated and analyzed, depending on the geometry and the consequent hemodynamics and remodeling induced by the intervention. In this paper we consider a TEVAR patient by an extensive computational analysis of pre-op, post-op, and one-year follow up data. We focus on both geometrical features like curvature, torsion and area variations, as well as near-wall and intravascular flow-related quantities (i.e., wall shear stress-based descriptors and helicity). Comparison of the different morphologies indicates a partial restoration of normal flow in the region of interest, even though low WSS are still present with the associated risks. Volumetric Lattice Boltzmann Method (VLBM) has been recently developed for solving complex flow with arbitrary curved boundaries. The VLBM regards fluid particles are uniformly distributed in cells and distinguishes fluid, solid, and boundary cells by introducing a volumetric parameter P ( x , t ) defining the percentage of solid volume in each cell. The advantages of VLBM stem from the self-regulation of P ( x , t ) in the volumetric lattice Boltzmann equation (VLBE) for particle collision and streaming with no spatial interpolation when dealing with an arbitrarily curved boundary with or without motion. First, the VLBE satisfies mass conservation strictly. Second, the implementation of VLBM is rather simple after the solid volume percentages are determined in boundary cells. And third, no-slip boundary condition is integrated in the streaming formulation thus significantly enhances the capability of parallelization. In this paper, we perform GPU (Graphics Processing Unit) parallelization for VLBM using a uniform computing scheme for both fluid and boundary cells. In contrast to the traditional LBM acceleration, the boundary conditions have to be imposed over boundary nodes, where branching operations are required to identify boundary nodes from others, the VLBM implementation does not need to distinguish fluid and boundary cells in the computation so that branching is minimized and the GPU kernel execution is accelerated. Furthermore, the algorithmic steps are optimized to improve coalesced access of GPU memory and avoid race condition. An application study is on a pulsatile blood flow in a patient-specific carotid artery segmented from an anonymous clinical CT image and more than 30 times speedup over the serial counterpart. Simulations of fluid dynamics and wall shear stress (WSS) are presented and known velocity skewness and WSS distributions are captured. The GPU accelerated VLBM is promising to perform patient-specific computational hemodynamics within clinical accepted time frame and is expected to reveal quantitative real-time blood flow in living human arteries to aid clinical assessment of cardiovascular diseases. The purpose of this study was to explore the effect of polydatin on ventricular remodeling after myocardial infarction in coronary artery ligation rats and to elucidate the underlying mechanisms. A rat model of ventricular remodeling after myocardial infarction was established by left coronary artery ligation. Rats with coronary artery ligation were randomly divided into five groups: control, plus 40 mg/kg captopril, plus 25 mg/kg polydatin, plus 50 mg/kg polydatin, and plus 100 mg/kg polydatin. The sham-operated group was used as a negative control. Rats were administered intragastrically with the corresponding drugs or drinking water for seven weeks. At the end of the treatment, the left ventricular weight index and heart weight index were assessed. The cross-sectional size of cardiomyocytes was measured by staining myocardium tissue with hematoxylin and eosin. Collagen content was counted by Sirius red in aqueous saturated picric acid. The concentrations of angiotensin I, angiotensin II, aldosterone, and endothelin 1 in myocardium or serum were determined by radioimmunoassay. Hydroxyproline and nitric oxide concentrations and glutathione peroxidase and catalase activities in serum were measured by ultraviolet spectrophotometry. Our results showed that seven weeks of polydatin treatment resulted in a significantly reduced left ventricular weight index, heart weight index, serum concentrations of hydroxyproline and aldosterone, an increased concentration of nitric oxide as well as enhanced activities of glutathione peroxidase and catalase. Myocardial angiotensin I, angiotensin II, and endothelin 1 levels were also reduced. The cardiomyocyte cross-sectional area and collagen deposition diminished. This study suggests that polydatin may attenuate ventricular remodeling after myocardial infarction in coronary artery ligation rats through restricting the excessive activation of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system and inhibiting peroxidation. Abstract: When simulating the propagation of a pressure pulse in arteries, the discretization parameters (i.e. the time step size and the grid size ) need to be chosen carefully in order to avoid a decrease in amplitude of the traveling wave due to numerical dissipation. In this paper the effect of numerical dissipation is examined using a numerical fluid–structure interaction (FSI) model of the pulse propagation in an artery. More insight in the influence of the temporal and spatial resolution of the wave on the results of these simulations is gained using an analytical study in which the scalar linear one-dimensional transport equation is considered. Although this model does not take into account the full complexity of the problem under consideration, the results can be used as a guidance for the selection of the numerical parameters. Furthermore, this analysis illustrates the difference in accuracy that can be obtained using a second-order implicit time integration scheme instead of a first-order scheme. The results from the analytical and numerical studies are subsequently used to determine the settings necessary to obtain a grid and time step converged simulation of the wave propagation and reflection in a simplified model of an aorta with repaired aortic coarctation. This FSI model allows to study the hemodynamic impact of a stiff segment and demonstrates that the presence of a stiff segment has an important impact on a short pressure pulse, but has almost no influence on a physiological pressure pulse. Although reperfusion is a useful method for the survival of ischemic heart, harmful effects have been observed. This study was carried out to investigate the preconditioning and cardioprotective potential effects of crocin and vitamin E on the hemodynamic and infarct size in the ischemia-reperfusion model of isolated rat hearts. Animals were divided into a control group, an ischemia-reperfusion control group and three treatment groups: crocin (10, 20, and 40mg/kg), vitamin E (100mg/kg), and combination (crocin 40mg/kg with vitamin E 100mg/kg). The hearts were excised, quickly transferred to a Langendorff apparatus, and subjected to 30min of global ischemia followed by 60min of reperfusion. Left ventricular developed pressure, coronary perfusion pressure, left ventricular systolic pressure, myocardial contractility, rate pressure product, coronary flow, and infarct size were assessed. The successful induction of ischemia was determined by ST elevation on the electrocardiogram. The results showed that crocin significantly improved cardiac dysfunction and also reduced infarct size in the rat hearts. However, the combination of crocin 40mg/kg and vitamin E 100mg/kg had an even more significantly improved effect on the hemodynamic parameters and infarct size. Therefore, it can be suggested that the protective role of crocin may be due to the stability or reinforcement of antioxidant systems, and crocin could be useful for the treatment or prevention of cardiac dysfunction.
