Several conferences have been regularly organized worldwide each year. The organizing process consists of many major steps including call for papers, paper submission, article reviews, author notification and participant registration. The networking computer system could facilitate managing the activities that involve plenty of remote stakeholders. This paper therefore presents an approach to implementing a conference management system using web service technology fused with the concept of business process modeling to support the workflows of conference management tasks. In this work, the REST protocol is selected for invoking the defined conference managing services, whereas Windows Workflow Foundation is exploited for binding all activities into the process flow. The approach enhances the stateless process to the stateful process. Moreover, the process flow is easily reorganized or customized for the subsequent conferences. The component activities, implemented as a service, within the process flow can be reused as well. The fact that services exchange data through XML standard, the implemented system is platform and language independent. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper was written for a symposium on the Sociology of Knowledge--the first in ,the history of the International Sociological Association--which was held at the 1959 Meeting of the ISA at Stresa, Italy, under the chairmanship of Kurt Wolff. It was published in the Transaction of that meeting, Vol. IV. The paper represents an attempt to come, at least partially, to terms with the problem of .the discussions about ideology which have figured so prominently in one sector of Western sociology, especially since the work of Mannheim. It attempts above all to emphasize the distinction between the level of ideology which links the conceptions of social science with the evaluation of recently past, contemporary, and prospective macroscopic social developments, and the analysis of the more basic cultural components in the social process that were at the center of Weber's sociology of religion. It should be read, at least in one perspective, in the light of its relation to the more general theoretical significance of the discussions of Chapters 2, 3, and 4. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

MARINE ecology ,BIODIVERSITY conferences ,MARINE resources conservation ,CONFERENCES & conventions ,HUMAN behavior - Abstract
Increasing pressure on marine ecosystems resulting from various kinds of human activities has led to a number of global and regional international initiatives and conventions. Most prominent for northern European Seas are the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), the Helsinki Convention on the Protection of the Marine Environment of the Baltic Sea, the OSPAR Convention for the Protection of the Marine Environment of the North-East Atlantic, and the Birds and Habitats Directives of the EU. The fundamental goals of marine nature conservation can be described as to conserve, protect, restore and manage: the functioning of marine ecosystems and their services;the regenerative capacity of natural resources and their sustained availability for human use;natural diversity, population dynamics, density and age structure of marine fauna and flora;intact and diverse natural marine habitats and biotopes; andthe characteristic features and beauty of nature and viewscapes. These conservation objectives can only be achieved if human activities affecting our oceans and seas were conducted by applying six key principles: (1)the precautionary principle;(2)best environmental practices (BEP);(3)best available technologies (BAT);(4)the polluter-pays principle;(5)the compensation or substitution principle; and(6)the avoidance principle. Further, the ecosystem approach to the management of human activities as has been clarified by the Helsinki- and the OSPAR Conventions should always be applied. Probably the most effective measure to achieve substantial marine conservation is to establish coherent networks of Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) at regional and global levels. This needs to be complemented by general habitats and species protection and enhancement, as well as by undiminished efforts to reduce unsustainable extraction of natural resources, to minimize eutrophication and pollution and to hinder new discharges to the seas. Red lists of threatened, endangered and/or declining species, habitats or biotopes would help assess the status of marine biodiversity, the effects of human activities, and the possible success of interventions. This paper describes the most relevant international conventions and regulations with respect to marine nature conservation of the seas in Northern Europe (North East Atlantic and Baltic Sea). The current implementation status of conservation measures and specifically of MPAs and some next steps are also outlined. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

JOINT academic degree programs ,SOCIAL services ,SCHOOL integration ,SPIRITUALITY ,RELIGION ,CONFERENCES & conventions - Abstract
The first national symposium on Social Work and Divinity Dual Degree Programs was designed to examine the current state of these interdisciplinary joint degree programs from both pedagogical and practical perspectives. The underlying assumption was that a more holistic approach is needed to advance our understanding of human nature, including the dimension of spirituality and the complexity of social issues. The rationale, issues, and promise for a strong commitment on the part of participating institutions toward educating the dual degree students are reflected in the context of the symposium's theme: Building Compassionate Communities: An Integration of Theology and Social Work in Professional Education and Practice. By examining the current state of social work and divinity dual degree program at Loyola University as a case example, this paper highlights the salient ideas and reflective discussions that were emerged from the symposium. This chapter argues that there has been little coherent attempt by the World Health Organization to align theoretical developments in health promotion research to shifting policy agendas. The evolving nature of health promotion has implications for health promotion research and related research agendas. By health promotion research, we mean research that services the needs of health promotion. By contrast, research on health promotion, may be concerned with developing critiques of health promotion practice or studying the values base of policy and practice. Both encompass a wide range of disciplines, among them epidemiology, anthropology, psychology, organizational and political science and sociology, that do not always sit comfortably side by side. This chapter draws on papers presented at, and reflections prompted by, the First UK Health Promotion Research Conference, held in Edinburgh, Scotland in April 1998. The conference was organized against the backdrop of this evolving international agenda and recent Great Britain Government policy initiatives. As such, it provided a timely opportunity to explore the main challenges for health promotion research in the twenty-first century. Two key themes recurred throughout the conference: the nature of knowledge and the meaning of evidence in health promotion. Finally and perhaps inevitably, in any field there is a lead and lag relationship between theory and action. In health promotion, theory has lagged behind action. In consequence, it has become increasingly difficult to account for how and in what ways action is linked to policy.

The article reports that the work represented in this volume began with the development of an international conference on care work. The conference, held at the University of Illinois in November 1997, was organized by Professors Sonya Michel, Francesca Cancian, Demie Kurz, and the writer. As a group, they are indebted to many. Funding for the conference was granted by the American Sociological Association Fund for the Advancement of the Discipline, the University of Illinois International Programs and Studies, the University of Illinois Women's Studies program, the University of California at Irvine, the University of Pennsylvania, and Syracuse University. In addition, many people at the University of Illinois worked tirelessly to pull the three-day conference together. Over the past year, a team at Syracuse University has worked to transform the series of conference papers into this edited volume. All are thankful to Pam Herd, Research Assistant Extraordinaire, for reading and making editorial comments on every paper in the volume, for assisting with introductory remarks, and for overseeing much of the communication between editors and authors.

CONFERENCES & conventions ,KINSHIP ,KIN recognition - Abstract
This section states that articles published in this issue are based on papers delivered at the workshop The Dividends of Kinship held at the fourth European Association of Social Anthropologists (EASA) conference in Barcelona, Spain in July 1996. The theme of the conference is Culture and Economy: Conflicting Interests, Dividend Loyalties. While kinship-related workshops were notably absent at the first two EASA meetings, in Coimbra (1990) and Prague (1992), the third conference, in Oslo (1994), featured three workshops under the umbrella topic of A New Agenda for Kinship Studies. However, none of the workshops resulted in an edited volume in the EASA Routledge series. In 1993, in a first call for papers for the Oslo kinship workshops, the conveners Adam Kuper and Gerd Baumann countered the decline of kinship studies during the 1970s and 1980s with a defensive but in the field we are still confronted with kinship - or kinship. Indeed our informants talk endlessly about marriage and marriage strategies, inheritance and succession, parents and children, siblings, cousins, and family history (A. Kuper and G. Baumann, 1993). The Barcelona workshop on which this volume is based was convened to go beyond approaches to kinship that seemed too narrowly cultural relativist, but without retreating to earlier biological or genealogical models of kinship. The abstract called for a renewed comparative approach to material and symbolic gains that can be secured through cultural constructs of relatedness, and urged potential applicants to explore the plurality of (culturally defined) interests pursued through different notions of kinship.

TOURISM ,CONFERENCES & conventions ,COMMUNITY development ,SUSTAINABLE development ,ECONOMIC development & the environment - Abstract
This article presents the foreword to the book Tourism and Sustainable Community Development, edited by Greg Richards and Derek Hall. Tourism and Community Development was the theme of a Conference held by the European Association for Tourism and Leisure Education in Viana do Castelo, Portugal in September 1997. Over 60 papers were presented at the conference on a wide range of subjects connected with tourism and the community. The papers selected for this volume are representative of the range of issues that were dealt with in the conference and also reflect the breadth of debate on the relationship between tourism and community. The conference would not have been possible without the support provided by DGXVI of the European Commission. It formed part of the EUROTEX Project, which aims to develop crafts tourism as a source of community development. The locations included in the EUROTEX project were integrated into the conference and examples of local crafts and crafts tourism development were on display for its duration. Many of the papers presented therefore related to the problems of community development in rural regions such as the Alto Minho. This book could not have been produced without the help of a large number of people.

This section introduces the book The Governance of Cyberspace which is the outcome of a conference held at the University of Teesside in April 1995 that was devoted to exploring the changing nature of governance as a property of that emergent techno-domain which has commonly come to be known as cyberspace. All the papers have been extensively revised both as a consequence of the debate conducted at the event and as a result of the continuing public interest in the issues and themes raised by the transforming qualities of the new information and communications technologies. A significant attraction of the debates surrounding cyberspace is that they appeal to a wide range of individuals associated with a disparate host of disciplines, organisations and locations. Thus it is no surprise that this eclectic dimension should find expression in this volume with contributions from science fiction writers, sociologists, psychologists, political theorists, computer scientists, policy analysts and others drawn from Europe, Canada and the U.S.

This article presents a preface to the book "Grasping the Changing World." This volume comprises papers from two panels of the Conference of the European Association of Social Anthropology held in Prague in 1992. The panel convened by Peter Skalnik, entitled "Dealing With Unbounded Wholes," investigated the pressing need for the development of new concepts, or reconsideration of existing concepts to allow for analysis of a general notion of society rather than the study of individual societies considered as independent and self-contained units. Skalnik also decided to step down as co-editor due to his enormous workload. However, his contribution to the preparatory work has been important. Quite naturally, neither of the panels exhausted the topic, nor did they converge completely as both addressed the world people live in, either by analyzing its roots and the way it became the contemporary reality: or by investigating the way it exists as such. It does not seem necessary to introduce the volume with a chapter to explain and connect the elements of this collection.

At the Barcelona conference in 1995, it was proposed to set up a new partnership between Europe and the Mediterranean, aiming at a free exchange zone, but with some exception in agriculture. After 10 years, the balance is disappointing and a total free exchange zone will be detrimental for food security for the Mediterranean countries. Another partnership should be seek in which both sides of the Mediterranean find their advantages and food security and safety, through new ideas, like specialization of countries in specific food production and looking at farmer revenues instead of only food prices.
