To investigate the cracking behavior in the evaporation process of the soil surface with biochar as an additive, five experimental groups were established in the natural environment with 0, 12, 60, 120, and 170 g·kg−1 biochar. The results of an investigation on organic matter and aggregations indicate that a high content of biochar can significantly improve the content of organic matter and the amount of soil aggregates. After adding 60 and 170 g·kg−1 biochar, the content of organic matter increased by 19.47% and 84.12%, respectively, and the content of soil aggregates with an average diameter greater than 0.25 mm increased by 16.43% and 38.20%, respectively. The investigation also examines the evaporation and cracking characteristics of soils that contain biochar. The rate of evaporation is approximately a "step" type function with time. The rate of evaporation is observed in three stages: the rapid, decelerating, and final evaporation stages. In the rapid evaporation stage, the initial evaporation rate of the sample that contains biochar is increased on average by 46%. The fractal dimension and cracks rate are decreased by 22.95% and 20.99% with 120 g·kg−1 biochar addition. This means that the increase of soil organic matter after adding biochar plays a crucial role in the stability of aggregates. Land degradation and climate change, two intricately intertwined phenomena, demand appropriate management solutions to effectively tackle the escalating issues of food and nutritional security. In this context, the realm of agriculture confronts formidable challenges in its pursuit of soil resource reclamation, improving water quality, mitigating climate change, and maintaining soil and natural resources for posterity. Central to these aspirations is the preservation of an optimum organic matter, serving as a linchpin threshold is crucial for protecting the physical, chemical, and biological integrity of the soil, while simultaneously sustaining agricultural productivity. To address these multifaceted challenges, the introduction of diverse organic amendments has emerged as a crucial strategy. Noteworthy among these is the application of biochar,which functions as a soil conditioner capable of bolstering soil health, mitigating the impact of climate change, and securing global food security. Biochar is a carbon-enriched substance produced through pyrolysis of assorted biomasswaste. It has a larger surface area, higher cation exchange capacity, and an extended carbon storage capability. The strategic integration of biochar production and subsequent soil application engenders an array of benefits, encompassing the amelioration of soil physical properties, augmented retention and the availability of nutrients, and the enhancement of biological activity, resulting in higher agricultural yields and societal benefits through the curtailment of soil to atmosphere greenhouse gas emissions. Additionally, biochar demonstrates its efficacy in the realm of environmental restoration by serving as a medium for extraction and elimination of heavy metals, which often pervade aquatic ecosystems and soil matrices. This review addressed the need for biochar production, characterization, soil health, the possibility for environmental restoration, and crop yield fluctuations owing to climate change. Crop residue-based biochar (CRB) has shown great potential for removing trace elements (TEs) from aquatic matrices. Despite the increasing interest in this area, no review has focused specifically on the efficacy of CRB for TEs removal in aquatic environments. This comprehensive review examines the global TEs water contamination status with an emphasis on their sources, compositional metrics for crop residue feedstock (proximate, ultimate, and lignocellulosic properties), and the potential use of CRB for TEs removal in aquatic media. It also evaluates the factors that affect the ability of CRB to remove TEs, such as feedstock type, production conditions, water pH, background electrolytes, water temperature, CRB/water ratio, and underlying pollutant sorption mechanisms. This review also discusses the practical applications of CRB in real water samples and engineering considerations for designing CRB with improved physicochemical properties, treatment efficiencies, and regeneration abilities. Additionally, the cost–benefit and economic assessment of CRB, challenges, and future research directions related to CRB are highlighted to promote research on this sustainable source of biochar. By elucidating the prospects of CRB as an adsorbent, this review emphasizes the need for continued research on its practical implications for environmentally relevant pollutant concentrations. Anaerobic digestate is a nutrient rich slurry by-product derived from biogas production, often used as a fertiliser due to its high nitrogen content. However, nitrogen losses from its application can lead to environmental pollution. In a laboratory experiment, the addition of high organic carbon materials to digestateamended soil as a potential means to stimulate microbial immobilisation of digestate supplied nitrogen was investigated. Soil was incubated in pots for 5 months with digestate (equivalent to 250 kgN ha-1). The impact of adding carbon into the digestate (equivalent to 540 kgC ha-1) as either glycerol, straw, woodchip, or biochar on soil microbial and chemical parameters was quantified. Glycerol amended soils had significantly higher microbial biomass compared to digestate alone during the first month and at 30 days after application had a 4x higher on average microbial N. The digestate + straw treatment resulted in a 2.5x significantly greater nitrogen immobilisation compared to digestate alone after 3 months of incubation. The digestate + woodchip had a 2× higher mean microbial N after 5 months, whilst the biochar amendment did not stimulate significant nitrogen immobilisation at any time. These results suggest that mixing a labile to moderately labile organic carbon amendment, such as straw, with digestate has the greatest potential to reduce nitrogen losses following digestate application through microbial immobilisation. The present study assessed the effective use of biochar for the adsorption of two potent HAB toxins namely, Microcystin-LR (MCLR) and Saxitoxin (STX) through a combination of dosage, kinetic, equilibrium, initial pH, and competitive adsorption experiments. The adsorption results suggest that biochar has excellent capabilities for removing MCLR and STX, with STX reporting higher adsorption capacities (622.53–3507.46 µg/g). STX removal required a minimal dosage of 0.02 g/L, while MCLR removal needed 0.4 g/L for > 90%. Similarly, a shorter contact time was required for STX removal compared to MCLR for > 90% of toxin removed from water. Initial pH study revealed that for MCLR acidic conditions favored higher uptake while STX favored basic conditions. Kinetic studies revealed that the Elovich model to be most suitable for both toxins, while STX also showed suitable fittings for Pseudo-First Order and Pseudo-Second Order in individual toxin systems. Similarly, for the Elovich model the most suited kinetic model for both toxins in presence of each other. Isotherm studies confirmed the Langmuir–Freundlich model as the best fit for both toxins. These results suggest adsorption mechanisms including pore filling, hydrogen bonding, π–π interactions, hydrophobic interactions, electrostatic attraction, and dispersive interactions. The prevalence of numerous pharmaceuticals in sewage effluent discharges has significantly decreased the life and quality of water bodies. Ibuprofen (IBP), an acidic non-steroid drug, is one such pharmaceutical being widely used for anti-inflammatory properties. The present work investigated the sorption efficiency of base activated biochar synthesized from green waste Tamarindus indica seeds for removing IBP from simulated water. The biochar was instrumentally analyzed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), energy-dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The influence of six operational parameters, viz., adsorbate concentration (initial), dose of adsorbent, pH, temperature, shaking speed, and contact time on the adsorption of IBP has been conducted using batch experiments. With concentration of 15 mg/L, pH 3, temp of 25 °C, sorbent dose of 3.33 g/L, speed of 150 rpm, and interaction period of 5 h, the maximum removal% of IBP achieved was 91.09%. The process of adsorption was optimized using the central composite design (CCD) method of response surface methodology (RSM) and artificial neural network (ANN). The non-linearized technique using isotherm and kinetic models was used to validate the process efficiency of IBP removal. Langmuir isotherm and pseudo-second-order kinetic models were found to be best fitted with non-linear analysis. The viability of the sorptive expulsion process was confirmed by thermodynamic studies. Reusability study of spent biochar showed its IBP removal ability even after several cycles of use. The maximum adsorption capacity was noted as 77.51 mg/g. The cost of produced adsorbent was competitive. The microbial toxicity bioassay of the solution before and after IBP treatment showed no adverse effects; thus, it can be discharged in the environment. Amending soil with different materials is gaining acceptance as an effective and inexpensive technique for reclamation of salt-affected soils. The main idea of this study was to investigate the effects of biochar, compost of municipal solid waste and different water salinities level on soil physical quality (SDexter) and soil productivity index (SPI). The treatments were as followed: Control: Soil without biochar or compost and irrigated with tap water, S1: Soil without biochar or compost and irrigated with saline water (EC = 4.5 dS m−1), S2: Soil without biochar or compost and irrigated with saline water (EC = 9 dS m−1), B: Soil amended with 1.5%w/w biochar and irrigated with tap water, B+S1: Soil amended with 1.5%w/w biochar and irrigated with saline water (EC = 4.5 dS m−1), B+S2: Soil amended with 1.5%w/w biochar and irrigated with saline water (EC = 9 dS m−1), C: Soil amended with 1.5%w/w compost and irrigated with tap water, C+S1: Soil amended with 1.5%w/w compost and irrigated with saline water (EC = 4.5 dS m−1), C+S2: Soil amended with 1.5%w/w compost and irrigated with saline water (EC = 9 dS m−1). Soil water characteristic curve (SWCC), Field capacity (FC), Plant wilting point (PWP), Plant available water (PAW), Dexter's index of soil physical quality (SDexter) and SPI were examined in a greenhouse experiment. The SPI was calculated by integrating the effects of six soil quality indices: plant available water, organic matter (OM), Electrical conductivity (EC), pH, Bulk density (BD) and Root weighting factor (RF) for all treatments were calculated. The results showed that the B treatment had a slightly higher effect on SWCC. The applied B and C treatments caused insignificant increase in PAW relative to the control. In addition, application of biochar or compost to soil significantly increased the SDexter. The application of C treatment had insignificantly higher value of SDexter compared to other treatments. Compared with the control, SPI was significantly higher for the B and C treatments. Biochar-based fertilizers (BBFs) agronomic performance depends on its nutrient pools, electrical conductivity (EC) and pH, conventionally assessed by laboratory classical wet methods that are non-environmentally friendly, time-consuming, and costly. However, the nutrient pools and properties of BBFs can be predicted by partial least square regression (PLS) based on Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) analysis. Thus, we aimed to use PLS regression based on FTIR analysis to predict the pH, EC and nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and potassium (K) pools in BBFs produced by different routes. Sixteen BBFs were produced by mixing, previously or after the pyrolysis process of low-grade phosphate acidulated with different inorganic acids (sulfuric, hydrochloric and nitric acids), addition or no different sources of Mg (magnesium chloride and serpentinite). PLS models based on the normalized FTIR dataset in BBFs are considered good when R2 during calibration and cross-validation phases are higher than 0.81, values founded in our study to prediction of pH, EC, total, and mineral N, total P, and P soluble in water, citric acid, formic acid, and neutral ammonium citrate, and total K of BBFs. Besides, the difference between R2 of calibration and cross-validation lower than 0.2 founded indicated no overfitting. Furthermore, the PLS models had high prediction capacity (R2 of prediction higher than 0.55) and high accuracy (R2 to y-randomization <0.50). Thus, PLS regression models based on the normalized FTIR dataset in BBFs were models characterized by the good performance, robustness, and nonrandom able to predict the nutrient pools, pH, and EC in BBFs. In the contemporary world, in order to deal with the existing problems of ecological debilitation and global warming and owing to the dire need to fulfill the rising necessities for sustainable energy, biochar could be a promising solution. Attributable to the astounding features of biochar, including higher capacitance (≤1600 F/g) and surface area (≤340 m2/g), greater energy density (≤26 GJ/Ton), and porosity (≤9 µm), they can be utilized in the energy storage domain. This review presents a comprehensive overview of conventional biochar production techniques encompassing pyrolysis and gasification along with an emphasis on biochar and their applications as efficient materials for sustainable energy storage in the near future. The beneficial characteristics of biochar over other carbonaceous substances (activated carbon, graphene) have been highlighted here. The applications of biochar and their composites for use in zinc-air batteries, thermochemical storage, magnetic concentration cells, lithium-ion batteries, green energy storage systems, and supercapacitors are analytically scrutinized in this review. Furthermore, all the challenges associated with the practical utilization of this methodology, with a road map leading to future prospects that can be implemented in the near future for the scalability of these projects have been emphasized here. Pea, member of the plant family Leguminosae, play a pivotal role in global food security as essential legumes. However, their production faces challenges stemming from the detrimental impacts of abiotic stressors, leading to a concerning decline in output. Salinity stress is one of the major factors that limiting the growth and productivity of pea. However, biochar amendment in soil has a potential role in alleviating the oxidative damage caused by salinity stress. The purpose of the study was to evaluate the potential role of biochar amendment in soil that may mitigate the adverse effect of salinity stress on pea. The treatments of this study were, (a) Pea varieties; (i) V1 = Meteor and V2 = Green Grass, Salinity Stress, (b) Control (0 mM) and (ii) Salinity (80 mM) (c) Biochar applications; (i) Control, (ii) 8 g/kg soil (56 g) and (iii) 16 g/kg soil (112 g). Salinity stress demonstrated a considerable reduction in morphological parameters as Shoot and root length decreased by (29% and 47%), fresh weight and dry weight of shoot and root by (85, 63%) and (49, 68%), as well as area of leaf reduced by (71%) among both varieties. Photosynthetic pigments (chlorophyll a, b, and carotenoid contents decreased under 80 mM salinity up to (41, 63, 55 and 76%) in both varieties as compared to control. Exposure of pea plants to salinity stress increased the oxidative damage by enhancing hydrogen peroxide and malondialdehyde content by (79 and 89%), while amendment of biochar reduced their activities as, (56% and 59%) in both varieties. The activities of catalase (CAT), superoxide dismutase (SOD), and peroxidase (POD) were increased by biochar applications under salinity stress as, (49, 59, and 86%) as well as non-enzymatic antioxidants as, anthocyanin and flavonoids improved by (112 and 67%). Organic osmolytes such as total soluble proteins, sugars, and glycine betaine were increased up to (57, 83, and 140%) by biochar amendment. Among uptake of mineral ions, shoot and root Na+ uptake was greater (144 and 73%) in saline-stressed plants as compared to control, while shoot and root Ca2+ and K+ were greater up to (175, 119%) and (77, 146%) in biochar-treated plants. Overall findings revealed that 16 g/kg soil (112 g) biochar was found to be effective in reducing salinity toxicity by causing reduction in reactive oxygen species and root and shoot Na+ ions uptake and improving growth, physiological and anti-oxidative activities in pea plants (Fig. 1). Biochar, with its potential to enhance soil fertility, sequester carbon, boost crop yields and reduce greenhouse gas emissions, offers a solution. Addressing the challenges posed by climate change is crucial for food security and agriculture. However, its widespread adoption in agriculture remains in its infancy. This study assessed the effects of rice hull biochar on cabbage production and greenhouse gas emissions, especially nitrous oxide (N2O). A trial, employing a randomized block design in triplicate was conducted from September 13 to November 23, 2022, where "Cheongomabi" cabbage was cultivated with N-P2O5-K2O fertilization at 32 - 7.8 - 19.8 kg 10a−1. Additional fertilizer was applied twice post-sowing. The Biochar application rates were control = 0 ton ha−1, B1 = 1 ton ha−1, B3 = 3 ton ha−1, and B5 = 5 ton ha−1. The aboveground biomass of autumn cabbage harvested 82 days after sowing was 2.40–2.70 kg plant−1 in the control and biochar treatments (B1, B3, and B5), with no significant differences (p > 0.05). Cumulative CO2 emissions during cultivation varied across treatment groups, with initial and cumulative emissions of 10.40–17.94 g m−2 day−1 and 3.63–4.43 ton ha−1, respectively. N2O emissions decreased with higher biochar application: reductions of 2.9%, 25.4%, and 41.1% in the B1, B3, and B5 treatments, respectively, compared to the control. The biochar application had no significant impact on yield but curbed soil emissions, Net ecosystem carbon balance during cabbage cultivation ranged from 0.42 to 3.41 ton ha−1 for the B1, B3, and B5 treatments, respectively, compared to control. This study was conducted to investigate the effects of Ca(H2PO4)2 and MgSO4 on the bacterial community and nitrogen metabolism genes in the aerobic composting of pig manure. The experimental treatments were set up as control (C), 1% Ca(H2PO4)2 + 2% MgSO4 (CaPM1), and 1.5% Ca(H2PO4)2 + 3% MgSO4 (CaPM2), which were used at the end of composting for potting trials. The results showed that Ca(H2PO4)2 and MgSO4 played an excellent role in retaining nitrogen and increasing the alkali-hydrolyzed nitrogen (AN), available phosphorus (AP), and available potassium (AK) contents of the composts. Adding Ca(H2PO4)2 and MgSO4 changed the microbial community structure of the compost. The microorganisms associated with nitrogen retention were activated. The complexity of the microbial network was enhanced. Genetic prediction analysis showed that the addition of Ca(H2PO4)2 and MgSO4 reduced the accumulation of nitroso-nitrogen and the process of denitrification. At the same time, despite the reduction of genes related to nitrogen fixation, the conversion of ammonia to nitrogenous organic compounds was promoted and the stability of nitrogen was increased. Mantel test analysis showed that Ca(H2PO4)2 and MgSO4 can affect nitrogen transformation-related bacteria and thus indirectly affect nitrogen metabolism genes by influencing the temperature, pH, and organic matter (OM) of the compost and also directly affected nitrogen metabolism genes through PO43− and Mg2+. The pot experiment showed that composting with 1.5% Ca(H2PO4)2 + 3% MgSO4 produced the compost product that improved the growth yield and nutrient content of cilantro and increased the fertility of the soil. In conclusion, Ca(H2PO4)2 and MgSO4 reduces the loss of nitrogen from compost, activates nitrogen-related bacteria and genes in the thermophilic phase of composting, and improves the fertilizer efficiency of compost products. Soil degradation has been accelerated by the use of chemical pesticides and poor agricultural practices, which has had an impact on crop productivity. Recently, there has been a lot of interest in the use of eco-friendly biochar applications to enhance soil quality and sequester carbon in sustainable agriculture. This study aimed to determine the individual and combined effects of Leaf Waste Biochar (LWB) and the bio-control agent Trichoderma harzianum (BCA) on the development of bacterial wilt in eggplants (Solanum melongena) caused by Ralstonia solanacearum (RS). The effects of LWB and BCA on eggplant physiology and defense-related biochemistry were comprehensively examined. Inoculated (+RS) and un-inoculated (-RS) eggplants were grown in potting mixtures containing 3% and 6% (v/v) LWB, both with and without BCA. The percentage disease index was considerably reduced (90%) in plants grown in the 6% LWB+ BCA amended treatments. Moreover, the plants grown in LWB and inoculated with BCA had higher phenolics, flavonoids and peroxidase contents compared to the non-amended control. The level of NPK was significantly increased (92.74% N, 76.47% P, 53.73% K) in the eggplants cultivated in the 6% LWB + BCA composition. This study has shown that the association of T. harzianum with biochar improved plant growth and reduced R. solanacearum induced wilt. Furthermore, the combined impact of biochar and T. harzianum was greater in terms of wilt suppression and increase in plant physiological measurements when the biochar concentration was 6%. The removal of toxic poly‐ and perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) as persistent pollutants from wastewater is imperative but challenging for water remediation. Many adsorbents including activated carbon, biochar, and clay minerals have been investigated for PFAS removal, but most of these materials are faced with high cost or/and low efficiency. The use of metal‐organic frameworks (MOFs) as sorbents is attractive for efficient removal of PFAS due to their tailor‐made structures and high surface areas. Herein, we synthesized, characterized a water stable Zr‐based porphyrinic MOF (PCN‐224) with cooperative adsorption domains, and demonstrated its excellent capture performance toward perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS), perfluorohexane sulfonate (PFHxS) and perfluorobutane sulfonate (PFBS). PCN‐224 has maximum uptake capacities of 963, 517, and 395 mg g−1 for PFOS, PFHxS, and PFBS, respectively, which are much higher than that of granular activated carbon. Moreover, coexistent anions (Cl−, SO42−) and humic acid have negligible effects on PFOS adsorption. The excellent adsorption performance of PCN‐224 toward PFOS is due to the orthogonal cationic channel pores with a diameter of 1.9 nm, the hydrophobic porphyrin units, and the Zr6 clusters with acidic sites. Cd contamination, especially in farmland soil, can pose serious threats to human health as well as ecological security. Stabilization is an important strategy for agricultural soil Cd remediation. In this study, a Cd-resistant strain (Cupriavidus B-7) was isolated and loaded onto cow manure (CDB), rice straw (RSB) and pine wood biochar (PB) to investigate its effects on Cd stabilization by a 60-day pot experiment. Results indicated that the Cupriavidus B-7-loaded biochar (labelled as CDBB, PBB and RSBB) reduced the CaCl2-extractable Cd by 43.06–59.78%, which was significantly superior to individual applications of Cupriavidus B-7 and biochar. Likewise, the soil physicochemical properties, urease, catalase and phosphatase activities were improved, indicating improved soil health. Consequently, dry weights of pakchoi's shoot and root were increased by 938.9–1230.9% and 149.1–281.2%, respectively, by applying CDBB, PBB and RSBB. Meanwhile, the Cd accumulation in pakchoi shoots decreased by 38.06–50.75%. Notably, the RSBB exhibited an optimal performance on pakchoi growth promotion and Cd accumulation alleviation. The structural equation model indicated the synergistic effect on pakchoi growth promotion and Cd accumulation decreased between biochar and Cupriavidus B-7. Our research provides some new insights into the development of strategies for green and sustainable remediation of Cd-contaminated soil. The use of saline water under drought conditions is critical for sustainable agricultural development in arid regions. Biochar is used as a soil amendment to enhance soil properties such as water-holding capacity and the source of nutrition elements of plants. Thus, the research was carried out to assess the impact of biochar treatment on the morphological and physiological characteristics and production of Solanum lycopersicum in greenhouses exposed to drought and saline stresses. The study was structured as a three-factorial in split-split-plot design. There were 16 treatments across three variables: (i) water quality, with freshwater and saline water, with electrical conductivities of 0.9 and 2.4 dS m− 1, respectively; (ii) irrigation level, with 40%, 60%, 80%, and 100% of total evapotranspiration (ETC); (iii) and biochar application, with the addition of biochar at a 3% dosage by (w/w) (BC3%), and a control (BC0%). The findings demonstrated that salt and water deficiency hurt physiological, morphological, and yield characteristics. Conversely, the biochar addition enhanced all characteristics. Growth-related parameters, such as plant height, stem diameter, leaf area, and dry and wet weight, and leaf gas exchange attributes, such rate of transpiration and photosynthesis, conductivity, as well as leaf relative water content were decreased by drought and salt stresses, especially when the irrigation was 60% ETc or 40% ETc. The biochar addition resulted in a substantial enhancement in vegetative growth-related parameters, physiological characteristics, efficiency of water use, yield, as well as reduced proline levels. Tomato yield enhanced by 4%, 16%, 8%, and 3% when irrigation with freshwater at different levels of water deficit (100% ETc, 80% ETc, 60% ETc, and 40% ETc) than control (BC0%). Machine learning algorithms investigate relationships in data to deliver useful outputs. However, past models required complete datasets as a prerequisite. In this study, rough set-based machine learning was applied using real-world incomplete datasets to generate a prediction model of biochar's adsorption capacity based on key attributes. The predictive model consists of if–then rules classifying properties by fulfilling certain conditions. The rules generated from both complete and incomplete datasets exhibit high certainty and coverage, along with scientific coherence. Based on the complete dataset model, optimal pyrolysis conditions, biomass characteristics and adsorption conditions were identified to maximize tetracycline adsorption capacity (> 200 mg/g) by biochar. This study demonstrates the capabilities of rough set-based machine learning using incomplete practical real-world data without compromising key features. The approach can generate valid predictive models even with missing values in datasets. Overall, the preliminary results show promise for applying rough set machine learning to real-world, incomplete data for generating biomass and biochar predictive models. Environmental stressors such as drought, salinity, and heavy metals pose significant obstacles to achieving sustainable food security, necessitating the development of universally applicable and cost-effective solutions to ameliorate soil under stress. Biochar, an eco-friendly material to increase crop yield, has been researched for almost two decades and has great potential for global use in enhancing stress resistance. However, there hasn't been comprehensive research on the impact of biochar application on soil properties, and root and crop growth. To optimize and promote biochar application in agriculture under stress, this study integrates over 100 peer-reviewed articles to explain how biochar promotes crop growth by enhancing soil resistance to stress. Biochar's distinctive properties, such as porous structure, alkaline nature, enriched surface functional groups, and nutrient content, are responsible for the following soil environment benefits: improved soil physiochemical properties, increased nutrient cycling, and boosted microbial growth. Moreover, the research emphasizes that the enhanced stress resistance of biochar optimizes nutrient absorption, alleviates soil pollutants, and thereby enhances overall crop productivity. The study discusses the roles and mechanisms of biochar on soil under stress, as well as the challenges linked to the sustainable and economical implementation of biochar in extreme soil conditions. Biochar is a nature-based green solution to lift soil carbon storage and mitigate carbon release. Here, we propose a novel concept of biochar carbon pump (BCP) that bridges microbial carbon pump (MCP) and mineral carbon pump (MnCP), facilitating effective carbon sequestration. The BCP functions to promote carbon storage by introducing biochar-derived persistent C into soil, enhancing negative priming effects, altering soil microbial communities, and reinforcing organo-organic and organo-mineral interactions. Introduction: Codonopsis pilosula is widely sought-after in China as a substitute for the more expensive ginseng. Continuous cropping of C. pilosula supports a vibrant health-supplement industry but requires significant inputs of fertilizers which increase production costs and degrade the environment. Methods: Here, three environmentally-friendly natural fertilizers, including biochar, bacterial fertilizer, and vermicompost, were used at different concentrations (undiluted, diluted 10 times, diluted 50 times) to determine their efficacy in seed germination and growth physiology of C. pilosula in continuous cropping. Results: The results showed that biochar, bacterial fertilizer, and vermicompost with different concentrations of leachate could all increase the germination rate, germination potential and germination index of C. pilosula seeds treated with inter-root soil leachate of continuous C. pilosula; increase the activity of antioxidant enzymes (superoxide dismutase and peroxidase) in C. pilosula seedlings under the stress of inter-root soil leachate of continuous C. pilosula, reduce the over-accumulation of malondialdehyde (MDA) content, and increase the resistance of C. pilosula seedlings. After transplanting, superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity increased by an average of 16.1%. Peroxidase (POD) levels showed an average increase of 16.4%. Additionally, there was a significant reduction in the MDA content, with an average decrease of 50%, and the content of osmoticregulating substances (free proline content and soluble protein content) exhibited a significant increase. Studies on the effect of biochar, manure and manure ash on soil nutrient kinetics are rare. Therefore, an incubation study was conducted to investigate nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and sulphur (S) kinetics in soils amended with biochar (B), B + cattle manure (BCM), B + goat and sheep manure (BGSM), B + poultry manure (BPM), farm yard manure (FYM), CM ash (CMA), GSMA, PMA, and wood ash (WA). Manure and manure ash were applied at 120 kg N ha−1; B was applied at 5 tha−1.Total mineral nitrogen (TMN), available P and S were determined at 2 weeks interval. Results revealed that soils treated with WA and PMA had the highest liming (pH 9.88) and salinity (820 μS m−1), respectively. The overall cumulative release of TMN, P and S in soil treated with PMA was 1, 7 and 16% higher than BPM amended soils, respectively. The least percentage of TMN, P and S mineralized was in soil treated with BCM (13.5%), BPM (12.3%) and WA (9.3%), respectively. The first order and power functions were able to capture the kinetic release of N, P and S in the soil and amendments. TMN had significant correlation with nitrate–N (r = 0.925, p ≤ 0.001) ammonium-N (r = 0.737, p ≤ 0.01), sulphate (r = 0.823, p ≤ 0.01) and phosphate (r = 0.702, p ≤ 0.01). The study concluded that the application of manure ash or manure with biochar encourages the timely release of TMN, P and S as well as improving the salinity and pH of the soil. The work objective was to assess the ecological state of soils by changing the residual oil content and restoring catalase activity after remediation. The soils were selected in various ecosystems: a steppe of the Rostov Region (Haplic Chernozem), beech-hornbeam forests in the Republic of Adygea (Haplic Cambisols), and semi-desert of the Caspian province of the Republic of Kalmykia (Eutric Cambisols). Soil samples were polluted with oil at a concentration of 5% of the soil mass. After that, ameliorants (biochar, nitroammophoska, sodium humate, and Baikal EM-1) were introduced into the oil-contaminated soil. The catalase activity of Haplic Cambisols was stimulated only with the introduction of D2 biochar by 11% relative to the control, and in Haplic Chernozem, catalase was most stimulated with the addition of nitroammophoska D0.5 and D1 by 65% and 57% of the control, respectively. Nitroammophoska in all doses significantly stimulated the enzymatic activity, in Eutric Cambisols by four to six times compared to the control. The range of soil stability determined by catalase activity: Eutric Cambisols > Haplic Chernozem > Haplic Cambisols. Thus, it is most effective to apply biochar in doses of D and D2 and D0.5 and D nitroammophoska during the remediation of oil-contaminated Haplic Chernozem. For the remediation of Haplic Cambisols, it is effective to introduce biochar in dose of D2, and Eutric Cambisols—biochar and sodium humate in dose of D0.5 and nitroammophoska (all doses). Efficient energy storage systems are crucial for the optimal utilization of renewable energy. Sodium‐ion batteries (SIBs) are considered potential substitutes for next‐generation low‐cost energy storage systems due to the low cost and abundance of sodium resources. However, the industrialization of SIBs faces a great challenge in terms of the anode. Hard carbon could be a promising anode material due to its high capacity and low cost which originates from biomass. This study used pre‐treatment and template carbonization methods to extract a hard carbon material from a large amount of discarded biomass in bamboo powder waste. This material has a good initial Coulombic efficiency of 78.6 % and good cycling stability when applied to sodium ion batteries.Typically, the optimal hard carbon material is used as the anode to prepare sodium ion battery prototypes to demonstrate their potential applications. The anode exhibited excellent sodium storage performance with a reversible capacity of 303 mAh ⋅ g−1 at 1 C rate and good cycling performance, retaining 92.0 % of its capacity after 100 cycles. These results demonstrate that BPPHC is a promising candidate for anode material in sodium‐ion batteries. This work suggests that bamboo powder could be a low‐cost anode material for SIBs. For the serious situation of heavy metal pollution, the use of cheap, clean, and efficient biochar to immobilize heavy metals is a good treatment method. In this paper, SA@ZIF-8/BC was prepared for the adsorption of Pb2+ in solution using sodium alginate (SA) and zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) modified corn cob biochar. The results showed that the specific surface area of modified biochar was greatly improved, with good adsorption capacity for Pb2+, strong anti-interference ability, and good economy. At the optimal adsorption pH of 5, the adsorption model of Pb2+ by SA@ZIF-8/BC was more consistent with the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and Langmuir isotherm model. This indicates that the adsorption of Pb2+ by SA@ZIF-8/BC is chemisorption and monolayer adsorption. The maximum adsorption of modified biochar was 300 mg g−1, which was 2.38 times higher than that of before modified BC (126 mg g−1). The shift in binding energy of functional groups before and after adsorption of SA@ZIF-8/BC was studied by XPS, and it was found that hydroxyl and carboxyl groups played an important role in the adsorption of Pb2+. Despite policies to restrict the mixing of organic waste with other general waste and improve its separation at source, municipal solid waste still contains a high proportion of organic waste. The residual organic waste is generated as a by-product of the mechanical treatment of municipal solid waste (MSW) and is mainly disposed in landfills after composting. Its reuse and recovery status varies across European countries. Most countries restrict the use of biostabilised residual waste (BSRW) to landfill cover, whereas others have regulated it as marketable compost. Crucially, BSRW is set to lose its "recycled" status under the revised European Union waste framework, with probably tighter restrictions and increased costs imposed for the landfilling of organic waste. Our research aimed to investigate pyrolysis as an alternative technology to treat the 10–40 mm fraction of BSRW (representing 50% of BSRW generated). Pyrolysis at 700 °C was carried out and feedstock and pyrolysis products were characterized. Mass and energy balances showed that pyrolysis produced hot vapour/gas whose combustion may render the pyrolysis process energetically sustainable. Biochar comprises 30–50% of BRSW mass after removal of glass, metal and stones. Our results indicate that pyrolysis has the potential to create options for contributing to reduce the landfilling of BSRW; however, the presence of residual impurities may limit biochar applications. Fatty acids and essential oils (EOs) are the primary variables that influence the quality of fennel (Foeniculum vulgare Mill.). Soil toxicity to cadmium (Cd) is the main environmental issue facing fennel, and priming methods like soil amendments and nanoparticles (NPs) are commonly utilized to deal with it. The goal of the current study was to examine the effects of biochar (BC) and selenium nanoparticles (Se NPs) on fennel plants in Cd-contaminated soils. The pot experiment was conducted with Cd stress at 0, 10, and 20 mg kg−1 soil, BC at 5% (v/v), and foliar-spraying Se NPs at 40 mg L−1 as a factorial completely randomized design (CRD) at a greenhouse condition in 2022. The findings demonstrated that Cd toxicity significantly decreased plant performance, while BC and Se NPs enhanced it. Without BC and Se NPs, Cd toxicity at 20 mg kg−1 soil decreased biological yield (39%), seed yield (37%), EO yield (32%), and monounsaturated fatty acids (14%), while increased saturated fatty acid (26%) and polyunsaturated fatty acids (40%) of fennel. The main EO profile was anethole (65.32–73.25%), followed by limonene (16.12–22.07%), fenchone (5.57–6.83%), and estragole (2.25–3.65%), which mainly were oxygenated monoterpenes. The combined application of BC and Se NPs improved the yield, EO production, and fatty acid profile of fennel plants under Cd stress, increasing the plants' resistance to Cd toxicity. To improve the removal capacity of rice straw biochar for heavy metals in acidic mine wastewater, magnesium-modified rice straw biochar (MBC) was prepared by impregnation-pyrolysis method. The effects of impregnation ratio, solution pH,adsorption time,and initial concentration on the removal of Cd(II) and Pb(II) from acid mine wastewater by MBC were investigated through batch adsorption experiments, and the features of MBC before and after adsorption were analyzed by characterisation techniques to explore the potential adsorption mechanisms. The results showed that the MBC prepared by impregnation-pyrolysis possessed a well-developed pore structure. The adsorption experiments showed that the removal efficiency for 10 mg/L of Pb(II) and Cd(II) by MBC reached the optimum values of 93. 58% and 97. 95% at impregnation ratio 2 : 1 and solution pH 5. 0 respectively. The removal process of Cd( II) and Pb(II) by MBC was consistent with the pseudo second order kinetic model and Langmuir adsorption isotherm model. According to the Langmuir model,the maximum adsorption capacities of MBC for Cd(II) and Pb(II) were 90. 45 mg/g and 138. 50 mg/g, respectively. FTIR and XRD analyses showed that the removal mechanism of Cd (II) and Pb (II) by MBC contained complexation, co-precipitation, ion exchange, and electrostatic interaction. After five regenerations, the removal efficiency of Cd(II) and Pb(II) by MBC was maintained at 85. 62% and 80. 16%, respectively. In this study, TiO2/P, K-containing grapefruit peel biochar (TiO2/P, K-PC) composites were synthesized in situ biomimetically using grapefruit peel as the bio-template and carbon source and tetrabutyl titanate as the titanium source. This was achieved using the two-step rotary impregnation–calcination method. Adjusting the calcination temperature of the sample in an air atmosphere could regulate the mass ratio of TiO2 to carbon. The prepared samples were subjected to an analysis of their compositions, structures, morphologies, and properties. It demonstrated that the prepared samples were complexes of anatase TiO2 and P, K-containing carbon, with the presence of graphitic carbon. They possessed a unique morphological structure with abundant pores and a large surface area. The grapefruit peel powder played a crucial role in the induction and assembly of TiO2/P, K-PC composites. The sample PCT-400-550 had the best photocatalytic activity, with the degradation rate of RhB, MO, and MB dye solutions reaching more than 99% within 30 min, with satisfactory cyclic stability. One-step carbonization was explored to prepare biochar using the residue of a traditional Chinese herbal medicine, Atropa belladonna L. (ABL), as the raw material. The resulting biochar, known as ABLB4, was evaluated for its potential as a sustainable material for norfloxacin (NOR) adsorption in water. Subsequently, a comprehensive analysis of adsorption isotherms, kinetics, and thermodynamics was conducted through batch adsorption experiments. The maximum calculated NOR adsorption capacity was 252.0 mg/g at 298 K, and the spontaneous and exothermic adsorption of NOR on ABLB4 could be better suited to a pseudo-first-order kinetic model and Langmuir model. The adsorption process observed is influenced by pore diffusion, π–π interaction, electrostatic interaction, and hydrogen bonding between ABLB4 and NOR molecules. Moreover, the utilization of response surface modeling (RSM) facilitated the optimization of the removal efficiency of NOR, yielding a maximum removal rate of 97.4% at a temperature of 304.8 K, an initial concentration of 67.1 mg/L, and a pH of 7.4. Furthermore, the biochar demonstrated favorable economic advantages, with a payback of 852.5 USD/t. More importantly, even after undergoing five cycles, ABLB4 exhibited a consistently high NOR removal rate, indicating its significant potential for application in NOR adsorption. Biochar and beneficial microorganisms have been widely used in ecological agriculture. However, the impact of biochar loaded with microbes (BM) on plant growth remains to be understood. In this study, BM was produced by incubating pecan biochar with the bacterial strain N33, and the effects of BM on pecan growth and the microbial community in the rhizosphere were explored. BM application significantly enhanced the biomass and height of pecan plants. Meanwhile, BM treatment improved nutrient uptake in plants and significantly increased the chlorophyll, soluble sugars, and soluble proteins of plants. Furthermore, BM treatment improved the soil texture and environment. Finally, BM application substantially enhanced the diversity of soil fungi and bacteria as well as the relative abundances of the phyla Firmicutes and Chloroflexi, and families Bacillaceae and Paenibacillaceae, as shown by high-throughput sequencing. Drought stress is the prime obstacle for worldwide agricultural production and necessitates innovative strategies for enhancing crop resilience. This study explores the efficacy of plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) and biochar (BC) as sustainable amendments for mitigating the effects of drought on wheat growth. Multiple experiments were carried out on isolated strains to assess their drought tolerance potential and multiple plant growth-promoting attributes. Experiments in the laboratory and natural environment were conducted to assess the impact of plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria, biochar, and their synergistic application on various growth parameters of wheat. The results revealed that the drought-tolerant PGPR strains (Bacillus subtilis and Bacillus tequilensis), alongside biochar (rice husk), alleviated the phytotoxic impact of drought by increasing the root length from 17.0% to 70.0% and shoot length from 30.0% to 82.0% as compared to un-inoculated stressed controls. The total chlorophyll and carotenoid contents of the plants were substantially increased to 477% and 423%, respectively, when biochar and PGPR were applied synergistically. Significant enhancements in membrane stability index, relative water content, proline, and sugar level were achieved by combining biochar and bacterial strains, resulting in increases of 19.5%, 37.9%, 219%, and 300%, respectively. The yield of wheat in terms of plant height, spike length, number of spikelets per spike, and number of grains per spike was enhanced from 26.7% to 44.6%, 23.5% to 62.7%, 91.5% to 154%, and 137% to 182%, respectively. It was concluded that the biochar-based application of PGPR induced drought tolerance in wheat under water deficit conditions, ultimately improving the production and yield of wheat. Environmental restoration and sustainable energy solutions require effective management and utilization of agricultural crop residues to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Biowastes are a valuable resource that can be converted into biofuels and their byproducts, solving the energy crisis and reducing environmental impact. In this study, teff husk, primarily generated in Ethiopia during the production of teff within the agro-industrial sector, is used as a feedstock for slow pyrolysis. Ethiopia generates an estimated annual production of over 1.75 million tons of teff husk, a significant portion of which is incinerated, resulting in significant pollution of the environment. This study focuses on assessing teff husk as a potential material for slow pyrolysis, a crucial stage in biochar production, to tap into its biochar-producing potential. To identify the composition of biomass, the teff husk underwent an initial analysis using thermogravimetry. The significant presence of fixed carbon indicates that teff husk is a viable candidate for pyrolytic conversion into biochar particles. The process of slow pyrolysis took place at three temperatures—specifically, 400, 450, and 500 °C. The maximum biochar yield was achieved by optimizing slow pyrolysis parameters including reaction time, temperature, and heating rate. The optimized reaction time, temperature, and heating rate of 120 min, 400 °C, and 4.2 °C/min, respectively, resulted in the highest biochar yield of 43.4 wt.%. Furthermore, biochar's physicochemical, SEM-EDX, FTIR, and TGA characterization were performed. As the temperature of biochar increases, its carbon content and thermal stability increases as well. There has been an ongoing discussion about whether using functionalized biochar nanoparticles for pollutant removal is practical. The existing uncertainty surrounding functionalized biochar nanoparticles raises questions regarding their effectiveness in unraveling this problem. In this study, functionalized biochar nanoparticles were produced from corn (Zea mays L.) residues and Conocarpus erectus L. wood at 400°C and 700°C using the H2SO4/HNO3 treatment. The synthesized nanoparticles were used to explore their sorption properties for Pb2+. Various adsorption kinetic and isotherm models were evaluated using linear and nonlinear regression techniques. The functionalized biochar nanoparticles originated from wood at 400°C had the largest (80.74 mg g−1) Pb2+ adsorption capacity due to their highest O/C and the most negative zeta potential. In comparison, nanoparticles fabricated from corn residues at 700°C showed the lowest (70.47 mg g−1) Pb2+ adsorption capacity. Pyrolysis temperature affected the sorption process. Functionalized biochar nanoparticles produced at 400°C were more successful in sorbing the pollutant than those fabricated at 700°C. Linear and nonlinear pseudo‐second‐order kinetic models described Pb2+ adsorption kinetics well, indicating the rate‐controlling step. The nonlinear Freundlich model described the equilibrium relationship between adsorbate concentration and capacity, elucidating adsorption site heterogeneity and biochar nanoparticles' affinity for Pb2+. Our study shows that functionalized biochar nanoparticles could help develop procedures for remediating polluted environments. Manganese (Mn) oxide‐coated sand has been suggested as an amendment for scrubbing metals in water filtration beds and also as a less concentrated medium for uniformly amending soils with Mn oxides in mesocosm scale studies. Earlier work at the lab bench scale, using potassium permanganate (KMnO4) solutions that were reduced with sodium (Na) lactate, resulted in sands coated with about 0.13% Mn. The goal of this project was to increase the amount of Mn oxide that could be coated on sand to make it a more useful amendment and also to attempt to scale up the procedure to produce larger (kg) quantities of coated sand. Titration experiments examined the effects of (1) varying the molar ratio of Na lactate to KMnO4, (2) varying the rate at which the titration was accomplished, and (3) varying the concentration (molarity) of the original KMnO4 solution. The results of this work led to an optimal approach utilizing 0.32 M KMnO4 solution that was titrated to a final lactate:permanganate ratio of ∼1.1 with 10% of the lactate being added every 10 min while the suspension was being stirred. The proportion of sand to an initial solution was also increased 5–20 fold to between 50 and 200 g per 100 mL of solution. Applying this method and using a large 20‐ to 30‐L reaction vessel yields sands coated with up to 0.7% Mn in batches 5–10 kg is size, which could be useful as an amendment in mesocosm scale studies, or as a component of treatment filter beds. The examination of various size fractions of the coated sands demonstrated that more Mn was coated on finer sand fractions, which appears to be a function of the particle surface area available for the coating of Mn oxides, and at a rate of 0.3–0.5 µg Mn mm−2 of the particle surface. Water scarcity presents a formidable challenge to agriculture, particularly in arid, semiarid, and rainfed settings. In agricultural contexts, hydrogels serve as granular agents for water retention, undergoing considerable expansion upon water exposure. They assume versatile roles encompassing soil‐water retention, the dispensation of nutrients and pesticides, seed encapsulation, erosion mitigation, and even food supplementation. This study's objective involves the examination of biochar‐infused hydrogels, fashioned by incorporating vine pruning waste‐derived biochars, and the assessment of swelling behaviors in various aqueous environments encompassing deionized, tap, and saline water at concentrations of 0.5–1%. Characterizations of the vine‐biochars‐VB and biochar‐incorporated hydrogels‐VBHG are executed, with particular attention to their swelling properties across diverse media. As an initial step toward appraising their agricultural relevance, these hydrogels are introduced to a germination medium featuring wheat seeds to discern potential influences on germination dynamics. The maximum swelling capacity of VBHG is recorded in deionized water, tap water at pH 7.0, tap water at pH 9.0, saline water at 0.5%, and saline water at 1%, reaching 352%, 207%, 230%, 522%, and 549%, respectively. Remarkably, the 0.5% VBHG treatment exhibits the most pronounced root elongation. The use of biodegradable polymers as matrices in composites gives a wide range of applications, especially in niche areas. The assessment of the effect of the filler content on the change of mechanical properties makes it possible to optimize the composition for specific needs. Biochar was used as a filler in the studied composites with two different biodegradable blends as a matrix. Poly(1,4-butylene adipate-co-1,4-butylene terephthalate)/polylactide/biochar (PBAT/PLA/BC) and polylactide/poly[(R)-3-hydroxybutyrate-co-4-hydroxybutyrate]/biochar (PLA/P(3HB-co-4HB)/BC) composites with 0, 10, 15, 20 and 30 wt% of biochar underwent mechanical tests. The test results revealed a change in the properties of the composites related to the filler content. The results of the tensile test showed that increasing the biochar content increased the tensile modulus values by up to 100% for composites with 30 wt% of biochar, compared to unfilled matrices, and decreased the elongation associated with the breaking of PBAT/PLA and PLA/P(3HB-co-4HB) matrix composites. The elongation values at break of PBAT/PLA and PLA/(3HB-co-4HB) composites with 30 wt% biochar were reduced by 50% and 65%, respectively, compared to the unfilled matrices. PLA/P(3HB-co-4HB) matrix composites, in contrast to PBAT/PLA/BC, showed a decrease in tensile strength with the increases in filler content from 35.6 MPa for unfilled matrix to 27.1 MPa for PLA/P(3HB-co-4HB)/BC30 composites. An increase in filler content increased the brittleness of the composites regardless of the matrix used, as determined under the Charpy impact-test. This phenomenon was observed for all tested PLA/P(3HB-co-4HB) composites, for which the impact strength decreased from 4.47 kJ/m2 for the matrix to 1.61 kJ/m2 for the composite containing 30 wt% biochar. PBAT/PLA-based composites with 10 wt% of biochar showed slightly lower impact strength compared to the unfilled matrix, but composites with 30 wt% biochar showed 30% lower impact strength than PBAT/PLA. The complex viscosity value increased with increased filler content. For all composites tested on both polyester matrices, the viscosity decreased with increasing angular frequency. This work aimed to describe the adsorption behavior of Congo red (CR) onto activated biochar material prepared from Haematoxylum campechianum waste (ABHC). The carbon precursor was soaked with phosphoric acid, followed by pyrolysis to convert the precursor into activated biochar. The surface morphology of the adsorbent (before and after dye adsorption) was characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM/EDS), BET method, X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and, lastly, pHpzc was also determined. Batch studies were carried out in the following intervals of pH = 4–10, temperature = 300.15–330.15 K, the dose of adsorbent = 1–10 g/L, and isotherms evaluated the adsorption process to determine the maximum adsorption capacity (Qmax, mg/g). Kinetic studies were performed starting from two different initial concentrations (25 and 50 mg/L) and at a maximum contact time of 48 h. The reusability potential of activated biochar was evaluated by adsorption–desorption cycles. The maximum adsorption capacity obtained with the Langmuir adsorption isotherm model was 114.8 mg/g at 300.15 K, pH = 5.4, and a dose of activated biochar of 1.0 g/L. This study also highlights the application of advanced machine learning techniques to optimize a chemical removal process. Leveraging a comprehensive dataset, a Gradient Boosting regression model was developed and fine-tuned using Bayesian optimization within a Python programming environment. The optimization algorithm efficiently navigated the input space to maximize the removal percentage, resulting in a predicted efficiency of approximately 90.47% under optimal conditions. These findings offer promising insights for enhancing efficiency in similar removal processes, showcasing the potential of machine learning in process optimization and environmental remediation. Due to a large number of harmful chemicals flowing into the water source in production and life, the water quality deteriorates, and the use value of water is reduced or lost. Biochar has a strong physical adsorption effect, but it can only separate pollutants from water and cannot eliminate pollutants fundamentally. Photocatalytic degradation technology using photocatalysts uses chemical methods to degrade or mineralize organic pollutants, but it is difficult to recover and reuse. Woody biomass has the advantages of huge reserves, convenient access and a low price. Processing woody biomass into biochar and then combining it with photocatalysts has played a complementary role. In this paper, the shortcomings of a photocatalyst and biochar in water treatment are introduced, respectively, and the advantages of a woody biochar-based photocatalyst made by combining them are summarized. The preparation and assembly methods of the woody biochar-based photocatalyst starting from the preparation of biochar are listed, and the water treatment efficiency of the woody biochar-based photocatalyst using different photocatalysts is listed. Electrocatalytic and photocatalytic water splitting are effective pathways for energy conversion to overcome from the reliance on the depletion fossil fuels and preclude the severe degradation of global climate. The review begins with the basic principle and mechanisms involved in both electro/photocatalysis of water splitting. Graphitic carbon nitride (g‐C3N4) is an interesting catalyst for water splitting due to its layered conjugated metal free semiconductor, owing to its unique physicochemical characteristics. However to improve some of the features of g‐C3N4 including long term stability, large active sites, electronic band structure, low recombination rate of photogenerated charges, and many more, interface engineering with different materials have been introduced to improve the catalytic activity. The review emphasizes the basics of g‐C3N4 with its interesting properties such as chemical and thermal stability, large surface area, unique optoelectronic properties, exfoliated layered structure, and tunable surface functional groups. The various strategies that have been used to modulate catalytic activity of this material are discussed, including morphology modulation, elemental doping, interface engineering with metals, and semiconductors. Metal‐loaded biochar (BC) catalytic systems are widely used for the removal of organic pollutants. However, there is still a lack of relevant research on the impact of different preparation conditions on the performance of synthetic materials. In the present research, CuO and Fe2O3 were loaded on the surface of Ginkgo biloba BC by a hydrothermal method and a chemical co‐precipitation method to prepare carbon‐based metal catalytic materials. Bisphenol A (BPA) was selected as the target pollutant to study the activation effect of the metal‐loaded BC to persulfate (PS). The results showed that the catalytic performance of the CuO/BC materials was better than that of Fe2O3/BC and Fe2O3/CuO/BC. By exploring the influence of the preparation process on the catalytic performance, it can be obtained that the optimal calcination temperature was 350°C and the optimal loading ratio was 2.5:1(w/w) for CuO/BC materials. The CuO/BC prepared under this condition could remove 81.5% of BPA within 60 min. Removing hydrogen sulphide (H2S) from decentralized biogas plants by local upgrading techniques may prove to be an economical option for biogas purification, particularly in rural regions. In the present study, readily available biomass viz. bamboo and banana peel were used to prepare biochar and employed for H2S removal from raw biogas produced via a 3 m3 Deenbandhu model biogas plant. The physical and chemical properties of fresh and used biochars were compared using several analytical techniques such as pH, EDX, FESEM, FT-IR, and XRD. The highest, 89.2% and 87.7% of H2S were removed from the raw biogas using banana peel and bamboo biochar utilizing the packed bed system. Four kinetic models viz. pseudo-first-order, pseudo-second-order, intraparticle diffusion, and Elovich models were fitted to evaluate the kinetics of H2S adsorption on bamboo and banana peel biochar. Kinetic study exhibited that the H2S adsorption for both the biochars followed the pseudo-second-order kinetic model with R2 = 0.99. The high potential of the adsorbents for H2S removal, the ease of availability of raw materials, the simplicity of fabrication and utilization method of the adsorbents renders it as a potential candidate for biogas desulphurization in small scale biogas plants installed at rural areas. The global agriculture industry is facing never before faced issues in the form of soil degradation, water scarcity, rising greenhouse gas emissions, and climate change. Among the possible remedies, applying biochar to the soil has drawn interest as a viable strategy. Although a great deal of literature has been written about the benefits and drawbacks of applying biochar initially, there is still a significant amount of research on the effects of using biochar repeatedly. This study seeks to address this gap by examining the varied effects of both the initial application (at rates of 0 t.ha−1, 10 t.ha−1, and 20 t.ha−1) and the reapplication of biochar (at rates of 0, 10, and 20 t.ha−1), especially when combined with different levels of nitrogen fertilizer (0, 108, and 162 kg.ha−1). The investigation focuses on soil properties and CO2 emissions from Haplic Luvisol in the temperate climate zone (Slovakia). The results showed that biochar generally improved soil properties, such as soil pH (KCl) (p <0.05), shifting it from acidic towards moderately acidic, and generally led to a decrease in ammonium (NH4+) and nitrate (NO3-) content. The second level of fertilization, combined with different biochar treatments, yielded the most efficient results in physical properties such as soil temperature, bulk density (BD), and soil water content (SWC) compared to control treatments without biochar. Biochar application contributed to the reduction of both average daily CO2 emissions and cumulative CO2 emissions during the study period (April – October) in 2022 compared to the control without biochar application.
