Abstract
- Two-stage gasification is a novel system designed to pyrolyze biomass at the first stage and gasify the biochar at a later stage to decrease tar production as in conventional direct gasification systems. In biomass application, it is common to use several types of biomass to maintain a sufficient supply of biomass resources. In this research, the interaction of biomass and biochar of seaweed and apple tree branch during steam co-gasification in the later stage of the two-stage gasification system is investigated to observe the effect of alkali and alkali earth metal (AAEM) during pyrolysis and gasification. Gasification of combinations of an apple tree branch with seaweed char, seaweed with apple tree char, co-pyrolysis char of seaweed and apple tree branch, and mixed char of individually pyrolyzed biomass are compared. It is found that seaweed and apple tree branch have a positive interaction in the two-stage co-gasification system due to promoting effect of calcium and potassium contents in their ashes.
