Abstract

ErSi1.7 layers with high crystalline quality were produced by 90 keV Er ion implantation employing channeled implantation. The perpendicular and parallel elastic strain of the heteroepitaxial erbium silicide layers were obtained with symmetric and asymmetric x-ray reflections utilizing a double-crystal x-ray diffractometer. The quasipseudomorphic growth of the epilayer and the stiffness along a and c axes of epilayer were deduced from the x-ray diffraction.

Abstract

The changes in brain function that perpetuate opiate addiction are unclear. In our studies of human narcolepsy, a disease caused by loss of immunohistochemically detected hypocretin (orexin) neurons, we encountered a control brain (from an apparently neurologically normal individual) with 50% more hypocretin neurons than other control human brains that we had studied. We discovered that this individual was a heroin addict. Studying five postmortem brains from heroin addicts, we report that the brain tissue had, on average, 54% more immunohistochemically detected neurons producing hypocretin than did control brains from neurologically normal subjects. Similar increases in hypocretin-producing cells could be induced in wild-type mice by long-term (but not short-term) administration of morphine. The increased number of detected hypocretin neurons was not due to neurogenesis and outlasted morphine administration by several weeks. The number of neurons containing melanin-concentrating hormone, which are in the same hypothalamic region as hypocretin-producing cells, did not change in response to morphine administration. Morphine administration restored the population of detected hypocretin cells to normal numbers in transgenic mice in which these neurons had been partially depleted. Morphine administration also decreased cataplexy in mice made narcoleptic by the depletion of hypocretin neurons. These findings suggest that opiate agonists may have a role in the treatment of narcolepsy, a disorder caused by hypocretin neuron loss, and that increased numbers of hypocretin-producing cells may play a role in maintaining opiate addiction.

Abstract

Heteroepitaxial ternary Co(sub x)Y(sub 1-x)Si(sub 1.7) silicide (x > 0.27) were constructed by Co implantation into YSi1.7/Si(111). Rutherford backscattering (RBS)/channeling was able to confirm that this silicide is hexagonal and that its azimuthal orientation is CoYSi1.7(0001)//Si(111) and CoYSi1.7(1120)//Si(110). Also, the lattice constants of the ternary silicide were determined by RBS/channeling and x-ray diffraction.

Abstract

By injecting cryogenic deuterium pellets into H-mode plasmas with edge localized modes (ELMs) from the low-field side (LFS) on EAST tokamak, the impact of these pellets on the edge plasma can be investigated. In some cases of pellet injection (PI), the intermediate phase (I-phase), i.e, the dithering-like cycles, have been observed. Experiments show that during one dithering-like cycle, three phases can be distinguished, which are closely related to the variations in the pedestal density profiles and density gradient after PI. Phase 1 is characterized by rapid particle loss and a density pedestal crash, phase 2 has a relatively low density gradient and enhanced edge density fluctuation and phase 3 corresponds to the relatively fast recovery of the density pedestal and reduced edge density fluctuation. Through an experimental analysis, it is shown that the plasma will enter the I-phase when the edge line-averaged density increases beyond a certain threshold value after PI. H-I-H transitions are more likely to be observed when the edge line-averaged density is greater than the core line-averaged density. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Ion beam is used to synthesize heteroepitaxial Co(x)Ni(1-x)Si2 layers with good crystalline quality. A ternary silicide layer with an x value of 0.66 exhibits a 11% type B and 89% type A orientation. Transmission electron microscope reveals that the Type B component is found at the interfaces and with a thickness consisting of a few monolayers. The unique distribution of the type B component in the epilayer is attributed to its small strain size, as observed from X-ray diffraction studies.

Item does not contain fulltext, OBJECTIVES: To understand the additional benefits of HAL compared with conventional cystoscopy at the patient level and to explore relationships of urine cytology and CIS. METHODS: We reanalyzed pooled data from 3 phase III studies comparing hexaminolevulinate (HAL, Hexvix) fluorescence cystoscopy with white light (WL) cystoscopy for detecting CIS. RESULTS: Of 551 patients, 174 had at least one CIS lesion detected by HAL, WL, or random biopsy. The CIS detection rate of HAL was 0.87 vs. 0.75 for WL (P = 0.006). By multivariate Poisson regression, female patients had fewer CIS lesions (P < 0.0001) while older patients (>/= 65) had a higher number of CIS lesions detected by HAL (P = 0.04). HAL was less likely to detect CIS in patients previously treated with chemotherapy or BCG (P = 0.01 and 0.03, respectively), after adjusting for age. CIS was unifocal in 44% and multifocal in 56%. Multifocal CIS was associated with positive cytology more frequently than unifocal (65% vs. 45%; P = 0.016) whereas a negative cytology was more frequently associated with unifocal CIS. Patients with positive urine cytology had twice as many CIS lesions detected by HAL as patients with negative urine cytology (P = 0.02). CONCLUSIONS: HAL cystoscopy had a higher CIS detection rate than WL cystoscopy. The average number of CIS lesions detected was associated with baseline clinical characteristics. Cytology was positive more frequently in multifocal CIS suggesting that HAL may be particularly useful in this setting to optimize detection of the extent of CIS.
