Abstract

Chapter 6 in High-Luminosity Large Hadron Collider (HL-LHC) : Preliminary Design Report. The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) is one of the largest scientific instruments ever built. Since opening up a new energy frontier for exploration in 2010, it has gathered a global user community of about 7,000 scientists working in fundamental particle physics and the physics of hadronic matter at extreme temperature and density. To sustain and extend its discovery potential, the LHC will need a major upgrade in the 2020s. This will increase its luminosity (rate of collisions) by a factor of five beyond the original design value and the integrated luminosity (total collisions created) by a factor ten. The LHC is already a highly complex and exquisitely optimised machine so this upgrade must be carefully conceived and will require about ten years to implement. The new configuration, known as High Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC), will rely on a number of key innovations that push accelerator technology beyond its present limits. Among these are cutting-edge 11-12 tesla superconducting magnets, compact superconducting cavities for beam rotation with ultra-precise phase control, new technology and physical processes for beam collimation and 300 metre-long high-power superconducting links with negligible energy dissipation. The new configuration, known as High Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC), relies on a number of key innovations that push accelerator technology beyond its present limits. Among these are cutting-edge 11–12Tesla superconducting magnets, compact superconducting cavities for beam rotation with ultra-precise phase control, new technology and physical processes for beam collimation and 100 metre-long high-power superconducting links with negligible energy dissipation, all of which required several years of dedicated R&D; effort on a global international level. The present document describes the technologies and components that will be used to realise the projectand is intended to serve as the basis for the detailed engineering design of the HL-LHC.

30. Surface States and Effective Surface Area on Photoluminescent P-Type Porous Silicon

Abstract

The present study is motivated by the possibility of utilizing porous silicon for spectral sensors. Pulse measurements on the porous-Si/electrolyte system are employed to determine the surface effective area and the surface-state density at various stages of the anodization process used to produce the porous material. Such measurements were combined with studies of the photoluminescence spectra. These spectra were found to shift progressively to the blue as a function of anodization time. The luminescence intensity increases initially with anodization time, reaches a maximum and then decreases with further anodization. The surface state density, on the other hand, increases with anodization time from an initial value of about 2 x 10(exp 12)/sq cm surface to about 1013 sq cm for the anodized surface. This value is attained already after -2 min anodization and upon further anodization remains fairly constant. In parallel, the effective surface area increases by a factor of 10-30. This behavior is markedly different from the one observed previously for n-type porous Si.

36. MACARONI SIGN AND TAKAYASU ARTERITIS IN A PATIENT WITH TUBERCOLOSIS: AN EASY TOOL FOR DIAGNOSIS

Abstract

Takayasu arteritis (TKA) is a chronic systemic autoimmune disease characterised by inflammation of the aorta and major branch vessels. Carotid Artery (CA) lesions in TKA, known as the ‘macaroni sign’, are characterised by global thickening of the common CA wall and lumen narrowing. There has been speculation that there is a link between TKA and tuberculosis (TB). Both illnesses cause arterial wall changes. We describe a TKA case diagnosed based on the presence of the ‘macaroni sign’ on CU in a young Asian women 30 years old with a diagnosis of latent TB. She has not previous histiry of disease and visited the hospital with complaints dyspnoea and carotidynia. At admission, body temperature, blood pressure and heart rate were 36.8°C, 112/60mm Hg on her right arm (left, 84/60 mmHg) and 76 beats/min, respectively. The pulse in her left radial artery was not palpable. Physical examination revealed spontaneous pain and tenderness on both sides of the patient’s neck. Blood test results demonstrated an elevated inflammatory response C–reactive protein, 8.0 mg/dL (normal range: less than 0.5 mg/L); erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR), 120 mm/hour. ANA, ENA and ASMA profile were negative. Quantiferon TB gold was positive. We suspected TKA and performed a CU, which revealed marked thickening of the intima/media of the bilateral common CAs and a positive macaroni sign (figure 1, Panel A and B). After a detailed evaluation of the systemic vessels the patient was diagnosed with TKA Type I limited to Branches from the aortic arch. The FDG–PET/CT demonstrated an increase in the glucose uptake in thoracic aorta, subclavian and right CA (SUV 4.5). The patient was treated with oral steroids at a dose of 0.8mg/kg and Isoniazid. After 6 months she showed a disappearance of carotidynia and dyspnoea, with a reduction in C–reactive protein, 1.5 mg/ dL and ESR=39 mm/hour. The FDG–PET/CT demonstrated a reduction in the glucose uptake in thoracic aorta, subclavian and right CA (SUV 3.5). Although MRI is usually recommended for the definitive diagnosis, the ‘macaroni sign’ identified by CU is a low–cost, simple and non–invasive method that can be easily performed during initial hospital visits. In addition, a clear correlation between MRI and CT angiography findings and disease activity or progression has not been found for TKA yet. Therefore, methods using ultrasound in combination with ESR should be considered easy and useful for diagnosis and clinical follow–up.

37. A CASE OF A HUGE AORTIC PSEUDO–ANEURYSM FOLLOWING AORTIC BIO PROSTHETIC ENDOCARDITIS: KEY ROLE OF 3D ECHOCARDIOGRAPHY

Abstract

Complications of infective endocarditis (IE) are associated with increased mortality and morbidity and therefore guidelines recommend early surgery [. Although two–dimensional echocardiography (2D) is the first line investigation, three–dimensional (3D) imaging provides incremental diagnostic information by allowing visualisation of structures in multiple planes. We present a cases which demonstrate how 3D imaging provides better morphological assessment of valve leaflets and associated structures, allows greater accuracy in identifying complications of IE. A 47 year old male with previous meccanic prosthetic aortic valve replacement was admitted to our department for evaluation of pyrexia. Lab–work was notable for leukocytosis with a white blood cell count of 13.000/mm3 and a hemoglobin level of 10.8 gr/dl. Blood cultures grew Staphylococcus Epidermidis. A transesophageal echocardiogram was performed showing a pulsatile perivalvular echo free–space with colour Doppler flow inside suggestive of an aortic pseudoaneurysm . 3D–TEE imaging provides better morphological assessment of aortic pseudoaneurysm. 3D TEE clearly demarcates an irregularly shaped of perivalvular cavity and through multiplanar reconstruction allowed a correct evaluation of the area and circumference. Conclusione: Decision making in IE is complex. The most common indications for early surgery are development of heart failure, uncontrolled infection or risk of embolism. In particular uncontrolled infection is commonly due to perivalvular abscess formation. 3D–TOE allows rapid, accurate, unique assessment of IE complication through unlimited multiplanar reconstructions, volume–rendered real–time imaging and colour full–volume regurgitation assessment which may not always possible on 2D–TTE or 2D–TOE. This case demonstrate how traditional 2D TEE may provide incomplete anatomical information. 3D imaging improved identification and characterisation of the complications of IE. The complementary data provided aids in decision making with regard to both requirements for timing and planning of surgery.

Abstract

Described herein is the incorporation of nanocrystalline silicon nc-Si from porous silicon (PSi) in a silica matrix fabricated by the sol-gel technique that yields highly photoluminescent (PL) and optically transparent monoliths with uniformly distributed nc-Si inclusions or nanoclusters. The sample monoliths were prepared with PSi-derived nanoclusters (PSi-n) with average diameters of 14–45 nm. Concentrated samples of PSi-n-exhibited blueshifted orange emission bands with maximum peaks between 600 and 750 nm with PL emission intensities ten times stronger than those of the original PSi, while diluted samples exhibited UV to blue (350–450 nm) emission bands. The PL quantum yield of the typical PSi-n monoliths was 44% higher than the native PSi. Light absorption measurements showed a linear response to laser powers before the saturation threshold at 80 mW. PL bleaching following 3 h of constant laser power exposure resulted in 90% reduction of the maximum initial PL. Mechanical and thermal stability properties of nc-Si were greatly improved within the silica matrix, demonstrating that PSi-n monoliths’ are more manageable materials that enable the fabrication of samples with high densities of nc-Si for semiconducting and optoelectronic purposes. No special chemical passivation of the nc-Si surfaces was used in the preparation of the PSi-n monoliths. Chapter 15 in High-Luminosity Large Hadron Collider (HL-LHC) : Preliminary Design Report. The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) is one of the largest scientific instruments ever built. Since opening up a new energy frontier for exploration in 2010, it has gathered a global user community of about 7,000 scientists working in fundamental particle physics and the physics of hadronic matter at extreme temperature and density. To sustain and extend its discovery potential, the LHC will need a major upgrade in the 2020s. This will increase its luminosity (rate of collisions) by a factor of five beyond the original design value and the integrated luminosity (total collisions created) by a factor ten. The LHC is already a highly complex and exquisitely optimised machine so this upgrade must be carefully conceived and will require about ten years to implement. The new configuration, known as High Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC), will rely on a number of key innovations that push accelerator technology beyond its present limits. Among these are cutting-edge 11-12 tesla superconducting magnets, compact superconducting cavities for beam rotation with ultra-precise phase control, new technology and physical processes for beam collimation and 300 metre-long high-power superconducting links with negligible energy dissipation. The present document describes the technologies and components that will be used to realise the project and is intended to serve as the basis for the detailed engineering design of HL-LHC.
