1. Long-term effect of repeated application of pig slurry digestate on microbial communities in arable soils

Abstract

Anaerobic digestion represents an opportunity for converting organic waste (OW) into valuable products: renewable energy (biogas) and a fertilizer (digestate). However, the long-term effects of digestates on soil biota, especially microorganisms, need to be better documented to understand the impact of digestate on soil ecosystem functioning and resilience. This study assessed the cumulative effect of repeated pig slurry digestate applications on soil microbial communities over a decade, using an in-situ approach to compare digested feedstock with undigested feedstock and other fertilization treatments. Conducted from 2012 to 2022 at an experimental field site in France, the study involved plots with identical agricultural soil management practices, differing only in fertilization treatments: mineral fertilizer, three different OW (cattle manure, pig slurry, pig slurry digestate), and a control with no organic or mineral fertilizer input. Changes in soil microbial communities were analyzed through molecular microbial biomass and diversity assessments using high-throughput sequencing targeting 16S and 18S ribosomal RNA genes. DNA extraction and molecular analyses were performed on soil samples collected at the start of the trial in 2012 and subsequently in 2017 and 2022. The long-term effects of annual digestate application over a decade include a higher soil microbial diversity in digestate-treated plots than in pig slurry-treated plots, and changes in the soil's microbial community structure and taxonomic composition resembling those observed with mineral fertilizer. Differential abundance analysis at the phylum level revealed few significant differences between digestate- and mineral fertilizer-treated plots for both prokaryotic and fungal communities. Only plots amended with cattle manure exhibited higher soil organic carbon content. Agricultural practices, along with climatic and environmental fluctuations, can significantly influence the response of soil microbial communities, thereby buffering the effects of fertilization treatments. Further research is needed to better understand the effects on soil microbial communities, considering the interactions between repeated digestate applications, different pedological contexts, and agricultural practices.

Abstract

A network of 137 cultivated fields covering the wide diversity of soils, crop rotations and cropping practices throughout the region of Brittany (France) was monitored to collect data on soil organic nitrogen (SON) mineralization and to identify the factors that explain the observed variability. The dataset presented in this article contains all of the information about the soils, which were subjected to pedological description and in-depth analysis of their topsoil properties. The topsoil (0–30 cm) was sampled by mixing 30 samples to obtain one composite per field, which was divided into one sub-sample sieved at 5 mm to analyze soil microbial biomass (SMB) and SON mineralization via anaerobic incubation, and one subsample dried at 40 °C and sieved at 2 mm. The physico-chemical analyses included the particle-size distribution of five fractions; organic matter (OM); organic C; organic N; pH (water); pH KCl; CEC (Metson); CEC (hexamminecobalt); exchangeable Al, Ca, Fe, K, Mg, Mn and Na (hexamminecobalt); Olsen P; Dyer P; and total Al, Ca, Fe, K, Mg, Mn, Na and P. Physical OM fractionation was used to characterize the 200–2000 µm and 50–200 µm fractions of particulate organic matter (POM). Finally, three chemical methods were used to determine extractable organic nitrogen (EON): hot KCl, hot water and phosphate buffer tests. This dataset covers a wide range of pedological situations and cropping systems, and is of great interest to scientists searching for soil properties that can explain SON mineralization. It provides original data on EON indices, SMB and multiple forms of P. This paper supports and supplements information presented in a previous article [1].

Abstract

Improving the assessment and prediction of soil organic nitrogen (N) mineralization is essential: it contributes significantly to the N nutrition of crops and remains a major economic and environmental challenge. Consequently, a network of 137 fields was established in Brittany, France, to represent the wide diversity of soils and cultivation practices in this region. The experimental design was developed to measure net N mineralization for three consecutive years, in order to improve the accuracy of measuring it. Net N mineralization was quantified by the mineral N mass balance, which was estimated from March to October for a maize crop with no N fertilization. The effect of climate on mineralization was considered by calculating normalized time (ndays) and, then, calculating the N mineralization rate (Vn) as the ratio of the mineral N mass balance to normalized time. Strict screening of the experimental data, using agronomic and statistical criteria, resulted in the selection of a subset of 67 fields for data analysis. Mean Vn was relatively high (0.99 kg N ha−1 nday−1) over the period and varied greatly, from 0.62 to 1.46 kg N ha−1 nday−1 for the 10th and 90th percentiles, respectively. The upper soil layer (0–30 cm) was sampled to estimate its physical and chemical properties, particulate organic matter carbon and N fractions (POM-C and POM-N, respectively), soil microbial biomass (SMB), and extractable organic N (EON) determined in a phosphate borate extractant. The strongest correlations between Vn and these variables were observed with EON (r = 0.47), SMB (r = 0.45), POM-N (r = 0.43), and, to a lesser extent, the soil N stock (r = 0.31). Vn was also strongly correlated with a cropping system indicator (r = 0.39). A modeling approach, using generalized additive models, was used to identify and rank the variables with the greatest ability to predict net N mineralization.

Abstract

The goal of the European Nitrate Directive 91/676/CEE is to mitigate or prevent water pollution associated with the nitrogen (N) cascade. Vegetable crops have a high risk of nitrate leaching during autumn and winter. Information about the fate of N from artichoke (Cynara cardunculus L. var. scolymus (L.)) residues is reviewed and then supplemented with a three-year study with 15N-labelled residues in an artichoke-cauliflower (Brassica oleracea L. cv. botrytis) rotation in six lysimeters. After three years, 6% of N in artichoke residues was leached, 8% was exported by crops, while 86% remained in the lysimeter. Summed over the rotation, 16% of artichoke-residue N was absorbed by artichoke and 14% by cauliflower. Total aboveground N uptake by all crops during the entire rotation ranged from 370 to 534 kg N ha−1, of which 207–311 kg N ha−1 returned to the soil as residues. Increasing N-recycling efficiency and reducing the risk of N leaching while conserving crop productivity requires capturing N mineralized from soil organic N. Cauliflower performs this capture effectively during the drainage period. A break crop should be introduced after the first and second harvests of artichoke to further synchronize N mineralization and uptake and reduce leaching risk during the rotation.

Abstract

Organic waste products (OWPs) from livestock have a high fertilizer value (N, P, K), but can also lead to environmental problems when applied in excessive quantities. Because their composition varies greatly, it is important to develop fast, reliable and inexpensive methods for determining their chemical contents. Near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) offers the possibility of rapid analysis of samples and requires little sample preparation, and previous studies have demonstrated that NIRS could be able to determine the most important compositional parameters of solid animal manure. The recent development of low-cost miniaturized spectrometers even enables manure-spreading equipment to be equipped with sensors to measure the composition in real time, and some applications are already being commercialized for the spreading of liquid OWPs. In-situ analysis of these very heterogeneous products (roughness, humidity) is a challenge for such applications, because spectral acquisition must be performed on raw samples with no preparation. To evaluate the accuracy with which NIRS estimates dry matter content, organic matter, total and ammonium nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, calcium and magnesium contents, we created a large calibration database representative of raw solid animal manures encountered in Brittany. A total of 490 samples of solid OWPs from livestock farms were collected in the early spring from 270 farms in Brittany (western France), in 2 campaigns conducted in 2018 and 2019. The sampling was designed to capture the large diversity of animal species (mainly cattle, pigs and poultry), type of farming and storage modes. Compositional parameters were analyzed according to analysis methods certified by the French standards organization (AFNOR). Samples were scanned using a Q-interline AgriQuant B8 equipped with a patented spiral sampler, which aggregates the heterogeneity of the sample. NIRS measurements were made in triplicate. Because the dataset covers a wide range of variability in the composition of solid animal manure, these data are of great interest to chemometrics experts and agronomists in search of references on the fertilizing value of products.

Land application of organic waste products (OWPs), catch crops and reduced soil tillage are accepted as sustainable management practices in agriculture. They can optimize resources by supplying nutrients to plants and helping to maintain soil fertility. They also can influence soil functions in agricultural production systems. Soil microorganisms can feed on fresh organic matter by producing extracellular enzymes. Enzyme production responds to resource availability and soil C:N:P ratios, which could limit biogeochemical cycling. Allocating resources to produce nutrient-acquiring enzymes requires a large amount of energy to achieve optimal growth. In this context, studying the use of OWPs is important, as alternatives to long-term use of mineral fertilizers, to understand the dynamics of response and how the OWPs influence production of extracellular enzymes in the soil. Effects of OWPs on soil enzymatic activities have been studied widely, but long-term effects remain poorly understood, and no information is available about differences in dynamics among systems for each biogeochemical cycle. The data described here were collected during two trials from an initial state, and they allow assessment of long-term effects of OWP application, mineral nitrogen fertilization, tillage and vegetation cover on soil enzymatic activities. Data are presented for the activities of five soil enzymes measured from 2012 to 2019: β-glucosidase, phosphatase, urease, arylamidase and arylsulfatase. Five additional enzymes were included in 2019 to supplement the analysis of biogeochemical cycles: alkaline phosphatase, phosphodiesterase, α-glucosidase, β-galactosidase and n-acetyl-glucosaminidase. These activities were measured in two trials at the EFELE study site: PROs (five OWPs applied to a corn-wheat rotation) and TS/MO (four treatments that examine interactions between OWP and type of tillage). These data can be used as a reference for future studies of soil enzymes in France and other regions (e.g. for developing reduced-tillage systems and organic or inorganic amendments, and to assess dynamics of the systems).

SON mineralization is a function of soil properties, land use and climate, which led us to monitor a network of 137 cultivated fields covering the wide diversity of soils, crop rotations and cropping practices throughout Brittany (France). SON mineralization was quantified by the mineral N balance calculated for a maize crop not fertilized with N; it was determined by measuring soil mineral N (SMN) in the 0-90 cm soil profile in March (Ni) and October (Nf) and N uptake by the maize crop, and predicting nitrate leaching (Nleached) using the STICS model. SMN and plant N uptake were measured in triplicate. To predict Nleached, STICS was initialized at the date of Ni measurement. In addition, the experimental design was based on estimating SON for three consecutive years (2012-2014) to improve the accuracy of measuring mineralization. An indicator of the cropping system (I_Sys) was developed that integrated well the effects of crop rotation and the frequency of manure application; it can be considered a good index of effects of the cropping system on SON mineralization. This dataset may be used for a variety of applications, such as analysing effects of soil properties, cropping history and climatic conditions on SON mineralization, or evaluating the accuracy of soil-plant models (e.g. STICS, CERES).

Combined with multivariate calibration methods, near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy is a non-destructive, rapid, precise and inexpensive analytical method to predict chemical contents of organic products. Nevertheless, one practical limitation of this approach is that performance of the calibration model may decrease when the data are acquired with different spectrometers. To overcome this limitation, standardization methods exist, such as the piecewise direct standardization (PDS) algorithm.The dataset presented in this article consists of 332 manure samples from poultry and cattle, sampled from farms located in major regions of livestock production in mainland France and Reunion Island. The samples were analysed for seven chemical properties following conventional laboratory methods. NIR spectra were acquired with three spectrometers from fresh homogenized and dried ground samples and then standardized using the PDS algorithm. This important dataset can be used to train and test chemometric models and is of particular interest to NIR spectroscopists and agronomists who assess the agronomic value of animal waste.

Abstract

This article presents a dataset on nitrate, nitrite and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) losses measured for 4 years using lysimeters at the EFELE long-term experimental site (Le Rheu, France). This ongoing long-term study was designed to provide information on effects of organic waste product (OWP) application and soil tillage on crop production, soil properties, biodiversity, greenhouse gas emissions and water quality. Forty wick-fiber lysimeters were installed at depths of 40 and 90 cm to document effects of organic and/or mineral fertilization, vegetation cover and weather conditions on dynamics of nitrate, nitrite and DOC concentrations of water collected during the drainage season (winter). These data help analyze the effects of winter plant cover (wheat vs. mustard catch crop) on these dynamics and fill a knowledge gap on effects of organic waste product supply on DOC losses. These dynamic data over several years are also of great interest for calibrating and evaluating models (e.g. STICS, APSIM, CERES).

International audience; Dans un environnement se caractérisant par des mutations numériques profondes, objets connectées, big data, plateformes, etc., la blockchain laisse entrevoir un potentiel de changements dans le pilotage des chaines logistiques. Se pose donc la question des potentialités d’une telle technologie innovante sur la logistique et plus globalement le Supply Chain Management (SCM) et ses principes de pilotage des flux et des processus. Cet article se propose donc de faire un point prospectif sur les usages de cette technologie pour la logistique et le SCM en mobilisant le modèle du SCM proposé par Mentzer et al. (2001). Plus précisément, ce modèle nous a offert la possibilité d’étudier les conséquences de la blockchain sur les six axes définis par Mentzer et al. (2001) : les flux « produits », les flux « services », la gestion de l’information, la gestion des ressources financières, la gestion des stocks et la coordination intra et inter-entreprises. Nos résultats mettent en avant (i) la nécessaire interopérabilité des blockchains en vue d’une traçabilité complète, (ii) les questions de pouvoir qu’impliquent l’interconnexion des flux de service et (iii) la modification des frontières de l’entreprise dans une vision plus large d’entreprise étendue.

12. Modeling N2O emissions of complex cropland management in Western Europe using DayCent: Performance and scope for improvement

Abstract

Under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), industrialized countries and countries with economies in transition (so called Annex 1 countries) are encouraged to move towards more sophisticated approaches for national greenhouse gas reporting. To develop a model-based approach for estimating nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions from agricultural soils, model calibration is one of the first important steps. Extensive multisite field observations are necessary for this purpose, as agricultural management in Western Europe is complex (e.g., diverse crop rotations, different types of fertilizer and soil tillage). In the present study, we used ca. 24,000 daily N2O flux observations from six cropland sites, two in France and four in Switzerland, to conduct an automatic data-driven calibration of the biogeochemical model DayCent. This model is planned to be used for greenhouse gas reporting in the entire European Union as well as in Switzerland. After a site-specific calibration, a leave-one-out (LOO) cross-evaluation was conducted to assess the model’s ability to predict N2O emissions for sites it was not calibrated for. Mean observed N2O fluxes for 54 interactions of crop cycles, field studies and treatments were used to evaluate the model. The LOO cross-evaluation resulted in a R2 of 0.63 for the prediction of mean N2O fluxes per crop cycle, compared to an R2 of 0.51 obtained with default parameterization. Our results showed that the improvement in N2O predictions was associated with the adjustment of only seven parameters controlling the N cycle in soil (e.g., the maximum daily nitrification amount and the inflection point for the effect of water-filled pore space on denitrification) out of several hundred parameters. These parameters showed a wide range of values between sites, revealing an important challenge for calibration-based improvement of N2O simulations. Despite the remaining uncertainty, our model-based estimates of N2O emission per crop cycle (2.64 kg N ha-1) were clearly closer to measurements (2.67 kg N ha-1) than commonly used emission factor approaches (1.60–1.71 kg N ha-1). Based on extensive field observations, our results suggest that, after data-driven calibration of only few N cycle parameters, DayCent simulations are useful for reporting N2O emissions of complex cropland management. These model based-estimates were more accurate, because they consider key drivers that are disregarded by simpler approaches. Abstract

Zwitterionic, cationic, and anionic per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are increasingly reported in terrestrial and aquatic environments, but their inputs to agricultural lands are not fully understood. Here, we characterized PFAS in 47 organic waste products (OWP) applied in agricultural fields of France, including historical and recent materials. Overall, 160 PFAS from 42 classes were detected from target screening and homologue-based nontarget screening. Target PFAS were low in agriculture-derived wastes such as pig slurry, poultry manure, or dairy cattle manure (median ∑46PFAS: 0.66 μg/kg dry matter). Higher PFAS levels were reported in urban and industrial wastes, paper mill sludge, sewage sludge, or residual household waste composts (median ∑46PFAS: 220 μg/kg). Historical municipal biosolids and composts (1976–1998) were dominated by perfluorooctanesulfonate (PFOS), N-ethyl perfluorooctanesulfonamido acetic acid (EtFOSAA), and cationic and zwitterionic electrochemical fluorination precursors to PFOS. Contemporaneous urban OWP (2009–2017) were rather dominated by zwitterionic fluorotelomers, which represented on average 55% of ∑160PFAS (max: 97%). The fluorotelomer sulfonamidopropyl betaines (X:2 FTSA-PrB, median: 110 μg/kg, max: 1300 μg/kg) were the emerging class with the highest occurrence and prevalence in contemporary urban OWP. They were also detected as early as 1985. The study informs for the first time that urban sludges and composts can be a significant repository of zwitterionic and cationic PFAS.

Abstract

Determining the chemical composition of animal manure rapidly is essential to manage fertilisation and decrease environmental pollution. Near infrared (NIR) spectroscopy is a non-destructive, inexpensive and rapid method to determine several components of manure simultaneously. This study investigated the ability of NIR spectroscopy to analyse the dry matter, total and ammonium nitrogen, phosphorus, calcium, potassium and magnesium contents in a database of heterogeneous cattle and poultry solid manures. The accuracy of calibration models obtained from different sample preparation methods (dried ground vs. fresh homogenized) and multivariate regression methods (partial least squares vs. local regression) were compared. The results showed that using local regression with NIR spectra of fresh homogenized manure could predict dry matter (R2=0.99, RMSEV = 1.64%, RPD = 13.31), total (R2=0.98, RMSEV = 0.16%, RPD = 7.11) and ammonium nitrogen (R2=0.97, RMSEV = 0.042%, RPD = 5.57) and phosphorus (R2=0.95, RMSEV = 0.10%, RPD = 5.56) contents accurately.

Abstract

International audience; While click and collect (C&C) is a growing omni-channel grocery shopping model spreading out in Europe and in the US, little attention has been paid to the design of convenience measure in this setting is under researched. In particular the role of the digital feature and its impact on consumer response. We explore the impact of C&C on consumer response through the customer's perception, from his digital to his physical trip. This paper studies customers' behaviors toward their usual retailer and their relationship with them toward the theory of services and more precisely the Service dominant logic (S-D-L). Cconsumers response is analyzed through the prism of convenience, especially by transposing usual measures: access, functional, process, relational to the C&C setting and providing a new one: digital convenience. The conceptual model has been tested empirically on a sample of 1078 consumers and responses are analyzed and decomposed by using Path-PLS structural equation modeling. Our evidence also suggests, that in a whole, each feature of convenience positively influence consumer response with different intensity levels. These findings provide specific recommendations for each C&C system. Thus, functional convenience has the strongest contribution of the model and explains 31.4% of customer response. Further segmented approaches of the causal model prove that fulfillment of C&C has a moderating effect on the relationship between convenience and consumer response. Access convenience remains a prerequisite for C&C in a whole, but somewhat surprisingly our results make evidence that it has a negative impact in a drive-in system. We show that digital convenience is clearly discriminant according the type of C&C.

L’objectif de cet article est d’etudier la perception du degre de satisfaction ainsi que les attentes des consommateurs vis-a-vis du parcours client, et des mix marketing et logistique deployes par une nouvelle formule de service en grande distribution, en complement des formules deja existantes (hypermarche, supermarche, etc.). Plus precisement, nous avons souhaite determiner les elements de differenciation susceptibles de faire notamment emerger de nouveaux axes a privilegier pour des enseignes souhaitant faire evoluer leur formule drive. Pour ce faire, nous avons mene une enquete empirique aupres de 1078 individus residant en region Bretagne et en Loire Atlantique. Nos travaux revelent les points d’amelioration suivants, sources de differenciation : le design du site internet de l’enseigne, les informations transmises a l’utilisateur, l’assortiment propose, les services complementaires plus personnalises.

Abstract

International audience; The potential contributions of exogenous organic matters (EOMs) to soil organic C and mineral N supply depend on their C and N mineralization, which can be assessed in laboratory incubations. Such incubations are essential to calibrate decomposition models, because not all EOMs can be tested in the field. However, EOM incubations are resource-intensive. Therefore, easily measurable EOM characteristics that can be useful to predict EOM behaviour are needed. We quantified C and N mineralization during the incubation of 663 EOMs from five groups (animal manures, composts, sewage sludges, digestates and others). This represents one of the largest and diversified set of EOM incubations. The C and N mineralization varied widely between and within EOM subgroups. We simulated C and N mineralization with a simple generic decomposition model. Three calibration methods were compared. Individual EOM calibration of the model yielded good model performances, while the use of a unique parameter set per EOM subgroup decreased the model performance, and the use of two EOM characteristics to estimate model parameters gave an intermediate model performance (average RMSE-C values of 32, 99 and 65 mg C g(-1) added C and average RMSE-N values of 50, 126 and 110 mg N g(-1) added N, respectively). Because of the EOM variability, individual EOM calibration based on incubation remains the recommended method for predicting most accurately the C and N mineralization of EOMs. However, the two alternative calibration methods are sufficient for the simulation of EOMs without incubation data to obtain reasonable model performances.

Abstract

The measurement of aggregate stability is an important indicator of soil quality and is widely used for monitoring soil condition. The SLAKES mobile app is an alternative tool to laboratory-based methods to measure soil aggregate stability. It provides aggregate stability measurements through Slaking Index (SI) with SI close to 0 suggesting high stability and values above 7 suggesting minimum stability. As the duration of this low-cost experiment is only 10 minutes, SLAKES is very attractive for scientists and no-scientists. SLAKES was implemented in Australia and has proven its efficiency in several studies.This study was conducted to determine whether the SLAKES mobile app could be adapted to French soils and then could be an alternative to the Mean Weight Diameter (MWD) method, normalized in France (ISO 10390). More specifically, the three main objectives were: (i) determining whether the aggregate stability measurements depend on the phones used for the experiment, (ii) estimating the number of measurements necessary to get reliable results, (iii) determining whether the app has the ability to detect the effect of contrasting soil managements previously shown using the MWD method.The study was performed on silty loam soils from EFELE (Effluents d’Elevage et Environnement) experimental site at le Rheu (Brittany, France) which is part of the French “Organic Residues” research observatory (SOERE PRO). The experimental design combines two different tillage practices (conventional tillage and shallow tillage) with two fertilizer treatments (mineral and organic (cattle manure)) randomly replicated three times. Soil samples were collected in March 2017 at both 0-15 cm and 15-25 cm depth from the 12 plots. The SI was measured on three aggregates simultaneously and this measurement was repeated 15 times for each sample which provided 45 SI per sample. Outliers above SI=11 were removed before statistical treatments. Four different phones of the same brand and generation were used to measure SI.An analysis of variance showed that the effect of the smartphone on SI measurements was not significant (p-value = 0.73, 0.88, 0.067 for 3 different samples). The SLAKES results showed comparable significant separation of means (p < 0.0001) between each soil management than the MWD method. According to the results of an analysis of variance, SI was significantly lower in reduced tillage than in conventional tillage condition (p-value = 2.10-16). These results indicate a higher soil stability in reduced tillage. Yet, the analysis of variance did not underline any effect of fertilization on the SI (p-value = 0.28), as previously found with the MWD method.This study proved that a relatively simple mobile app can detect the effect of soil management practices on aggregate stability with a similar performance than the MWD method. This conclusion was reinforced by the existing correlation between the SI and the MWD index (p-value = 0.00059, R2 = 0.39). We recommend to perform similar experiments on other sampling campaigns or in other pedological and soil management contexts taking at least 15 measures per sample.

Abstract

International audience; L’initiative « 4 pour 1 000 : les sols pour la sécurité alimentaire et le climat » propose d’augmenter chaque année d’un quatre millième le stock de carbone présent dans tous les sols du monde. À la demande de l’Ademe et du ministère de l’Agriculture et de l’Alimentation, l’Inra (devenu aujourd’hui INRAE) a conduit une étude, centrée sur la France métropolitaine, visant à estimer le potentiel de stockage de carbone des sols agricoles et forestiers et, in fine, à mesurer la contribution potentielle de ce levier à l’objectif de réduction des émissions nettes de gaz à effet de serre. Diverses pratiques candidates (cultures intermédiaires, apport de nouvelles ressources organiques, gestion des prairies, agroforesterie …) ont été évaluées. Les résultats obtenus ont montré une forte variabilité du stockage additionnel de carbone. L’étude a également permis d’estimer le coût supplémentaire, pour les agriculteurs, de mise en œuvre de ces pratiques de stockage, puis une allocation de l’effort de stockage entre les pratiques et les régions a été effectuée. Ces données permettront aux différents acteurs concernés de faire les meilleurs choix pour stocker davantage de carbone dans les sols. Cet ouvrage s’adresse aux décideurs chargés de l’élaboration des politiques publiques climatiques dans le domaine agricole, aux responsables territoriaux, aux aménageurs, aux ingénieurs et techniciens, aux agriculteurs et à l’ensemble des citoyens intéressés par la problématique de l’agriculture et du changement climatique.

Abstract

International audience; Combined with multivariate calibration methods, near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy is a non-destructive, rapid, precise and inexpensive analytical method to predict chemical contents of organic products. Nevertheless, one practical limitation of this approach is that performance of the calibration model may decrease when the data are acquired with different spectrometers. To overcome this limitation, standardization methods exist, such as the piecewise direct standardization (PDS) algorithm.The dataset presented in this article consists of 332 manure samples from poultry and cattle, sampled from farms located in major regions of livestock production in mainland France and Reunion Island. The samples were analysed for seven chemical properties following conventional laboratory methods. NIR spectra were acquired with three spectrometers from fresh homogenized and dried ground samples and then standardized using the PDS algorithm. This important dataset can be used to train and test chemometric models and is of particular interest to NIR spectroscopists and agronomists who assess the agronomic value of animal waste. Abstract

International audience; This article presents a dataset on nitrate, nitrite and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) losses measured for 4 years using lysimeters at the EFELE long-term experimental site (Le Rheu, France). This ongoing long-term study was designed to provide information on effects of organic waste product (OWP) application and soil tillage on crop production, soil properties, biodiversity, greenhouse gas emissions and water quality. Forty wick-fiber lysimeters were installed at depths of 40 and 90 cm to document effects of organic and/or mineral fertilization, vegetation cover and weather conditions on dynamics of nitrate, nitrite and DOC concentrations of water collected during the drainage season (winter). These data help analyze the effects of winter plant cover (wheat vs. mustard catch crop) on these dynamics and fill a knowledge gap on effects of organic waste product supply on DOC losses. These dynamic data over several years are also of great interest for calibrating and evaluating models (e.g. STICS, APSIM, CERES).

24. Influences of repeated application of organic waste products on soil organic carbon content and stability assessed using Rock-Eval 6® thermal analysis

Abstract

The term Organic Waste Products (OWPs) encompasses a wide range of byproducts such as manure, sewage sludge or green waste compost. The use of OWPs impacts soil quality and functioning, agricultural yields, carbon (C) sequestration, biogeochemical cycles of nutrients like nitrogen (N) or phosphorus, and organic matter (OM) dynamics. These impacts likely depend on the considered OWP.Taking advantage of 3 mid to long-term experimental trials (6 to 20 years) located in the Northern part of France (Paris region; Brittany; Alsace), we investigated the impact of 16 different OWPs on C content and stability. To do so, surface soil samples from replicated plots amended with the different OWPs used either alone or in addition with mineral N fertilization and appropriated control treatments were analyzed using Rock-Eval 6® thermal analyses. Samples taken up at the onset of the experiment and after 6, 18 and 20 years for the 3 sites respectively were analyzed. It resulted in the analyses of 248 different samples whose Rock-Eval 6® (RE6) signature can be used as a proxy for soil organic carbon (SOC) biogeochemical stability. In particular, we determined 2 RE6 parameters that were related to SOC biogeochemical stability in previous studies (e.g. Barré et al., 2016): HI (the amount of hydrogen-rich effluents formed during the pyrolysis phase of RE6; mgCH.g-1 SOC), and T50 CO2 oxidation (the temperature at which 50% of the residual organic C was oxidized to CO2 during the RE6 oxidation phase; °C). We also computed the amount of centennially stable SOC from RE6 parameters using the model developed in Cécillon et al. (2018). Our results showed that no clear effect of OWPs addition can be established for the youngest site (6 years). On the contrary, OWPs amendments had a clear effect on SOC quantity and quality at the sites having experienced 18 and 20 years of OWPs addition. For these sites, OWPs amendments increased SOC content, decreased SOC thermal stability (T50 CO2 oxidation) and increased the Rock-Eval 6® Hydrogen Index (HI) compared to control plots. OWPs amendments tended to increase slightly the amount of centennially stable SOC at the sites having experienced 20 years of repeated OWPs application. Our results suggest that if OWPs addition does increase SOC content, at least in the long run, the majority of this additional SOC is labile and may be quickly lost if OWPs additions are stopped. Abstract

Traditionally, soil quality has been assessed through physical, chemical and biological properties without paying attention to soil biota and the different associated ecosystem services provided (Tyler, 2019). To fill that gap, the european BiodivERsA “SoilMan” project (Ecosystem services driven by the diversity of soil biota – understanding and management in agriculture) is focused on the relations among soil management, soil biodiversity, and ecosystem services, at seven different management gradients in agricultural long term observations (LTO’s) trials across Europe (France “SOERE-PROs EFELE” and “SOERE-ACBB Lusigan”, Romania “Turda”, Sweden “Angermanland” and “Säby-Uppland”, Germany “Garte Süd” and Spain “La Hampa”). Management gradients covered different tillage regimes (zero, minimum and conventional) and different crop rotations (crop types and duration).In the present study, we characterised the bacterial and fungal communities of soils from the different countries and agricultural managements in arable land. The samplings were carried out following the same methodology in all the countries during 2017-2018 when wheat was sown in the LTO’s. The soil DNA was extracted and subjected to metabarcoding analysis of 16S and Internal Transcribed Spacer (ITS) ribosomal RNA (rRNA) for bacterial and fungal community analysis, respectively.Different alpha diversity metrics, including number of OTUs, Simpsons and Shannon indexes, as well as beta diversity distances (weighted and unweighted UNIFRAC, Jaccard and Bray-Curtis) were calculated. Multidimensional Scaling ordination plots (PCoA) were used to visualize the existence of community gradients among locations and soil managements. All the statistical data procedure was analysed using the vegan R package (Oksanen, 2011).In general terms, results show that alpha diversity for both bacteria and fungi, clearly differs among countries while soil management effects are less defined among and within countries. Concerning the beta diversity indexes, communities tend to cluster more according to the spatial location than due to the soil management regimen. This is especially true for fungal communities. Abstract

Using organic waste products (OWP) in agriculture has been reported to impact both the activity and composition of soil microbial communities. However, little information is available on how the response of a soil microbial community to a given OWP may depend on the physicochemical and microbial properties of the soil receiving the input. Here, we performed a microcosm experiment to compare the effect of 2 different OWPs (GWS: co-compost of Green Wastes and Sewage sludge or FYM: FarmYard Manure), each applied to 5 different soils, on the activity, abundance and diversity of the soil microbial communities. Soils were selected to represent a range of physicochemical and climatic characteristics. CO2 and N2O emissions, microbial biomass and taxonomic diversity were monitored for 28 days following OWP input. The five soils presented different prokaryotic and fungal communities structures before OWP application. During the 28 days of incubation, those control soils (without OWP) harboring the highest organic matter contents released the greatest CO2 and N2O emissions, and had the highest soil microbial biomass. The impact of organic amendments on soil activity and microbial diversity differed with the nature of the OWP. FYM application increased CO2 emissions 2-fold and delayed N2O emissions compared to GWS. Major changes in prokaryotic genetic structures were also observed when GWS was applied. The effect of OWPs was dependent on soil type and the five soils exhibited distinct patterns of CO2 and N2O emission after a given input. This accorded with the fact that the structure and composition of the microbial communities harbored by each soil type responded differently to a given OWP application. To conclude, our results show that different soil types, harboring distinct microbial community structures, responded differently to OWP application, leading to different patterns and rates of greenhouse gas emissions. This response was also OWP-dependent.

PSLs have become essential players in the food industry logistics chain through their ability to offer a service formula that meets the logistics concerns of manufacturers (transport costs, traceability, supply chain performance). Also, the article addresses the issue of positioning the PSL within the strategic triangle of services to determine the strategies implemented (costs - customization - variety). Our analysis is based on an empirical study carried out at the level of a territory: Brittany. We wanted to compare the results obtained with the regions bordering Brittany: Loire Atlantique and Lower Normandy, in order to possibly bring out regional specificities with regard to the service formulas built by the PSLs.

Abstract

International audience; Soil organic matter (SOM) content drives the physical, chemical, and biological processes taking place in soils because it affects microbial activity. In this study, we asked the following question: in agroecosystems, what are the effects of certain agricultural practices on SOM and the activity of soil microbes? Experiments carried out at six different research facilities were used to explore the impacts of potential agricultural practices used in mixed crop-livestock systems on SOM and the activity of soil microbes. The results show that the agricultural practices studied here (i.e., use of livestock effluent, incorporation of temporary grasslands, reduction in soil preparation) can increase SOM content and significantly boost the activity of certain microbial enzymes that help break down SOM. As a result, these practices reinforce the ability of soils to provide minerals that plants can exploit with a view to limiting the use of synthetic inputs in forage systems.; Les matières organiques du sol (MOS) sont le pilier de fonctions physiques, chimiques et biologiques des sols. Les micro-organismes du sol sont des acteurs majeurs de la dynamique des MOS. Dans les agroécosystèmes, quel est l’effet de certaines pratiques agricoles sur cette dynamique et sur le fonctionnement microbien des sols ? Six dispositifs expérimentaux (de moyenne à longue durée), situés dans différents contextes pédoclimatiques, ont permis d’étudier les effets, sur la teneur en MOS et sur le fonctionnement microbien du sol, de pratiques agricoles pouvant être mises en œuvre dans les systèmes de polyculture-élevage. Les résultats obtenus montrent que les pratiques agricoles étudiées (apports d’effluents d’élevage, intégration de prairies temporaires, réduction du travail du sol) peuvent augmenter la teneur en MOS et stimuler significativement certaines activités enzymatiques microbiennes intervenant dans la décomposition des MOS. Ainsi, ces pratiques peuvent renforcer la capacité des sols à fournir des éléments minéraux utilisables par les plantes, dans un contexte de limitation des intrants de synthèse dans les systèmes fourragers.

International audience; Logistics service providers (LSPs) have become one of the main players in the supply chain thanks to the quality and the price of service packages they offer to the food industry. This article discusses the adequacy of service packages developped by LSPs in the context of a permanent conflict between industry and distributors. This analysis is based on an empirical study in three geographical areas: Brittany, Normandy and the Loire-Atlantique region. Our aim is to determine what type of service packages the food industry will eventually favour.; Par la qualité et le prix des formules de services qu’ils proposent aux industriels des filières agroalimentaires, les PSL sont devenus des acteurs incontournables au sein des chaînes logistiques. Par conséquent, se pose la question de la justesse de cette formule de service au regard d’un contexte de conflit permanent autour de la seule variable prix entre les industriels et les distributeurs. Abstract

The logistical concerns of the agrifood industries underline the central role played by Logistics Service Providers (LSPs) in the coordination of logistics chains. Therefore to differentiate itself and perpetuate a competitive advantage, the PSL builds, maintains and develops logistics services backed by ubiquitous information systems and mainly geared towards covering shippers' requirements. Also, the article aims to study the positioning of the information system and more particularly that of traceability within the service formula proposed by the PSL. The analysis is based on two empirical studies carried out in 2010 and 2011 on a specific territory, Brittany. The results obtained highlight the positioning of the information system in the service formula proposed by the service provider and they make it possible to reconsider the operational function of the information system from the point of view of the managerial implications of the PSLs.

Abstract

The impacts of tillage and organic fertilization on soil organic matter (SOM) are highly variable and still unpredictable, and their interactions need to be investigated under various soil, climate and cropping system conditions. Our work examined the effect of reduced tillage and animal manure on SOM stocks and quality in the 0―40 cm layer of a loamy soil under mixed cropping system and humid temperate climate. The soil organic carbon (SOC) and N stocks, particulate organic matter (POM), and C and N mineralization potential (301 days at 15 °C) were measured in a 8-yr-old split-plot field trial, including three tillage treatments [mouldboard ploughing (MP), shallow tillage (ST), no tillage (NT)] and two fertilization treatments [mineral (M), poultry manure 2.2 t/ha/yr C (O)]. No statistically significant interactive effects of tillage and fertilization were measured except on C mineralization. NT and ST showed greater SOC stocks (41.2 and 39.7 t/ha C) than MP (37.1 t/ha C) in the 0-15 cm increment, while no statistical differences were observed at a greater depth. N stocks exhibited similar distribution patterns with regard to tillage effect. Animal manure, applied at a rate representative of typical field application rates, had a smaller impact on SOC and N stocks than tillage. The mean SOC and N stocks were higher under O than M, but the differences were statistically significant only in the 0―5 cm increment. MP showed lower C-POM stocks than NT and ST in the 0-5 cm increment, whereas greater C-POM stocks were measured under MP than under NT or under ST in the 20-25 cm increment. Organic fertilization had no impact on C-POM or N-POM stocks. In the 0-25 cm increment, NT showed a lower C and N mineralization potential than MP. Our work shows that the sensitivity of SOM to reduced tillage for the whole soil profile can be relatively small in a loamy soil, under humid-temperate climate. However, POM was particularly sensitive to the differential effects of tillage practices with depth, and indicative of differentiation in total SOM distribution in the soil profile.

The fate of pig (Sus scrofa) slurry labeled with 15 N was investigated when applied on a day soil (fine, mixed, frigid, Typic Humaquept) and a sandy loam (loamy, mixed, frigid, Typic Dystrochrept) cropped to maize (Zea mays L.) in 2000 and to barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) in 200L The slurry was applied in spring 2000, and plant and soil samples were collected at 6 h (Day 1) and at Days 14, 42, 96, and 413 after application. The samples were analyzed for 15 N content in plant, in whole soil, and in soil NH + 4-N, NO - 3-N, organic N, and clay-fixed N pools. Percentage 15 N recovery was >93% in both soils at Day 1 and decreased slowly thereafter. Rapid day fixation of slurry 15 N occurred at Day 1, and was greater in the day soil (34% of applied 15 N) than in the sandy loam (11%). At Day 96, less of the applied slurry 15 N was recovered in maize grown on the clay soil (29%), as compared with the sandy loam (50%). At the same period, the residual soil 15 N was mostly present as organic N and NO - 3-N in the sandy loam, and as organic and clay-fixed N in the day soil. At Day 413, N recovery in barley was about 3% of the initially applied N in both soils. The 15 N recovery was generally higher in the day soil than in the sandy loam, but total 15 N recovery from the soil-plant system was similar for both soils. We conclude that soil type had little influence on the total 15 N recovery from the soil-plant system, but significantly influenced the fate of slurry N in the various soil pools and plant N uptake on the year of application.

Abstract

Isotopic labelling can help improve our knowledge of the fate of manure N in agroecosystems. Our objective was to investigate the labelling dynamics of excreta N by feeding a pig with a 15N-enriched diet (2.808 atom % 15N) and to establish the implications of using the labelled excreta for N cycling studies. Pig urine and feces were collected and pooled each day for 20 d following the start of 15N-feeding. Each of the 20 excreta samples were analyzed for pH, dry matter content, C and N contents, and 15N distribution between the mineral and organic N pools. Sub-samples of each excreta sample were incubated for 84 d, and the 15N abundance of N mineralized after 7, 21 and 84 d of incubation was determined. The 15N concentration in pig excreta increased sharply during the first 3 d of 15N-feeding and slowly thereafter. The 15N concentration in excreta decreased rapidly when an unlabelled feed was served after 12 d of 15N-feeding. On the first day and after 9 d of 15N-feeding, the mineral and the organic N pools of the collected excreta had similar 15N content. However, from day 2 to 9 of 15N-feeding, the 15N abundance of excreta mineral N was 0.1 to 0.3 atom % lower than in the organic N pool. During incubation of the excreta samples, the 15N content of the mineralized N was 0.1 to 0.4 atom % lower after 84 d than after 21 d of incubation, indicating a heterogeneous distribution of 15N between the rapidly and the slowly mineralizable N pools of pig excreta. Despite some heterogeneity, the measured differences in 15N enrichment among the various excreta N pools were generally less than 15% for the first 9 d of 15N-feeding, and less than 5% afterwards. The labelled excreta were thus considered appropriate for short-term studies on the fate of manure N in the soil-plant system, especially for excreta collected after 9 d of 15N-feeding. Abstract

Réduire les pertes, rétablir les équilibres; The nitrogen efficiency is the ratio between the output of nitrogen in the animal products and the input required for the livestock production. This ratio is a driver of the economic profitability and can be calculated at various levels of the production system: animal, field or farm. Calculated at the scale of the animal, it is generally low with less than half-ingested nitrogen remaining in the milk, the eggs or the meat in the form of proteins; the major part of the nitrogen being rejected in the environment. Significant gains were achieved in the past via the genetic improvement and the adjustment of feed supply. At the farm level, the efficiency increases to 45% to 50%, thanks to the recycling of animal excreta as fertilisers. From excretion to land application of manure, the losses of nitrogen are very variable depending on the animal species and the manure management system. Considering the risks of pollution swapping, all management and handling steps need to be considered. Collective initiatives or local rules on agricultural practices allow new opportunities to restore nitrogen balances on local territory.
