Execution of a marine operation (MO) requires coordinated actions of several vessels conducting simultaneous and sequential offshore activities. These activities have their operational limits given in terms of environmental parameters. Wave parameters are important because of their high energetic level. During the execution of a MO, forecast wave spectral parameters, i.e., significant wave height (Hs), peak period (Tp), and peak direction, are used to make an on-board decision. For critical operations, the use of forecasts can be complemented with buoy measurements. This paper proposes to use synthetic statistics of vessel dynamic responses to predict "real-time" wave spectral parameters using multi-output machine learning (ML) regression algorithms. For a case study of a vessel with no forward speed, it is observed that the random forest model predicts accurate Hs and Tp parameters. The prediction of wave direction is not very accurate but it can be corrected with on-board observations. The random forest model has good performance; it is efficient, useful for practical purposes, and comparable with other deep learning models reported in the scientific literature. Our institutional approach to performing periodic constancy checks on dose calculations for the Varian Eclipse treatment planning system is described, including details of how the Radformation ClearCheck software is leveraged for highly efficient results analysis. Photon- and electron-specific synthetic phantoms are created which allow all modality-specific fields to be spatially separated and calculated in a single plan, with field-specific structures encompassing individual irradiated volumes facilitating field-specific dose distribution evaluations. Plan comparison templates in ClearCheck allow for the near-instantaneous evaluation of 116 and 165 individual calculation metrics for photon and electron fields, respectively. The methodology is further applied to the Radformation ClearCalc finite-size pencil beam and electron algorithms for secondary algorithm validation. The total time required for constancy evaluations of 6 primary algorithms and 4 secondary algorithms is less than one hour, with much of that time used for passive dose calculation. Fragmentation, disconnection, or entrapment of an in-use microcatheter during neuro-endovascular procedures is a known risk. Often a benign entity, retained catheters are not infrequently observed, but severe complications including thrombus, thromboembolic events, pseudoaneurysm, and limb ischemia have been described, necessitating retrieval. This technical case report demonstrates the safe use of an external carotid artery (ECA) approach for ligation and removal of a retained microcatheter after middle meningeal artery (MMA) embolization. This article also demonstrates the use of live intraoperative fluoroscopy as a surgical adjunct to ensure that the catheter is fully removed without any injury, shearing, or breakage during removal. A 66-year-old male patient presented with bilateral subdural hematomas to an outside hospital. He subsequently underwent evacuation of the hematomas followed by a right-sided MMA embolization, complicated by Onyx (Medtronic, Minneapolis, MN) entrapment of the microcatheter in the MMA. The patient was asymptomatic, but there was significant concern about continuing antiplatelet/anticoagulation therapy in the presence of the subdural hematoma. We proceeded with an open surgical approach for catheter retrieval. As the catheter was withdrawn, intraoperative fluoroscopy demonstrated complete removal without any retained fragments. The patient recovered without event and was discharged on postoperative day 1. On follow-up the patient continued to do well without any complications from the fragment that remained in the external carotid circulation. This case and accompanying video demonstrates the effective use of open ECA surgical approach to retrieve the retained microcatheter after an MMA embolization. Noncontiguous 2-level cervical disc herniation (NCT-CDH) is a common condition that often requires surgical intervention. In this study, we developed a surgical approach for the treatment of NCT-CDH using anterior percutaneous full-endoscopic single incision through the vertebral body. We provide a brief overview of its safety, efficacy, and feasibility, along with a description of our relevant surgical experience. A retrospective study was conducted, involving 30 patients who were followed up for at least 12 months. Preoperative and postoperative visual analog scale, Japanese Orthopedic Association scores, Nurick scores, intervertebral disc height, and modified Macnab criteria were recorded. Patients underwent regular radiological evaluations throughout the follow-up period. Postoperative computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, and X-ray examinations revealed bone tunnel healing, intact drilled vertebral bodies without collapse, adequate decompression of the spinal canal, and normal cervical mobility. There was a significant improvement in postoperative visual analog scale, Japanese Orthopedic Association scores, Nurick scores, and modified Macnab criteria compared to the preoperative values (P < 0.05). Our study revealed that the anterior percutaneous full-endoscopic transcorporeal with single-incision treatment for NCT-CDH is a safe and feasible surgical method. Betulonic acid (B(O)A) is a pentacyclic lupane-type triterpenoid that widely exists in plants. There are scientific reports indicating anticancer activity of B(O)A, as well as the amides and esters of this triterpenoid. In the first step of the study, the synthesis of novel amide derivatives of B(O)A containing an acetylenic moiety was developed. Subsequently, the medium-soluble compounds (EB171 and EB173) and the parent compound, i.e., B(O)A, were investigated for potential cytotoxic activity against breast cancer (MCF-7 and MDA-MB-231) and melanoma (C32, COLO 829 and A375) cell lines, as well as normal human fibroblasts. Screening analysis using the WST-1 test was applied. Moreover, the lipophilicity and ADME parameters of the obtained derivatives were determined using experimental and in silico methods. The toxicity assay using zebrafish embryos and larvae was also performed. The study showed that the compound EB171 exhibited a significant cytotoxic effect on cancer cell lines: MCF-7, A-375 and COLO 829, while it did not affect the survival of normal cells. Moreover, studies on embryos and larvae showed no toxicity of EB171 in an animal model. Compared to EB171, the compound EB173 had a weaker effect on all tested cancer cell lines and produced less desirable effects against normal cells. The results of the WST-1 assay obtained for B(O)A revealed its strong cytotoxic activity on the examined cancer cell lines, but also on normal cells. In conclusion, this article describes new derivatives of betulonic acid—from synthesis to biological properties. The novel DERIVO 2heal Embolisation Device (Acandis, Pforzheim, Germany) is a flexible, fully radiopaque flow-diverter with a fibrin-based nano-coating, which is supposed to make the device inert to the coagulation cascade. We report a case of pseudoaneurysm treatment with this device under single anti-platelet therapy (SAPT). A female patient underwent endoscopic surgery for chronic rhinosinusitis. During surgery, the lateral wall of the sphenoid wall and the adjacent internal carotid artery was injured, leading to massive hemorrhage, which was treated with compression and tamponades. Eleven days after the procedure, the patient developed a rapidly growing pseudoaneurysm at the injury site with a relevant risk of upcoming aneurysm rupture. The aneurysm was treated by implantation of a DERIVO 2heal. A SAPT regimen was chosen due to the recent massive hemorrhage and anticipating enhanced progressive aneurysm occlusion. There were no thromboembolic complications and there was no morbidity. After 5 days, the pseudoaneurysm was completely occluded. The MAJIS (Moons And Jupiter Imaging Spectrometer) instrument on board the ESA JUICE (JUpiter ICy moon Explorer) mission is an imaging spectrometer operating in the visible and near-infrared spectral range from 0.50 to 5.55 μm in two spectral channels with a boundary at 2.3 μm and spectral samplings for the VISNIR and IR channels better than 4 nm/band and 7 nm/band, respectively. The IFOV is 150 μrad over a total of 400 pixels. As already amply demonstrated by the past and present operative planetary space missions, an imaging spectrometer of this type can span a wide range of scientific objectives, from the surface through the atmosphere and exosphere. MAJIS is then perfectly suitable for a comprehensive study of the icy satellites, with particular emphasis on Ganymede, the Jupiter atmosphere, including its aurorae and the spectral characterization of the whole Jupiter system, including the ring system, small inner moons, and targets of opportunity whenever feasible. The accurate measurement of radiance from the different targets, in some case particularly faint due to strong absorption features, requires a very sensitive cryogenic instrument operating in a severe radiation environment. In this respect MAJIS is the state-of-the-art imaging spectrometer devoted to these objectives in the outer Solar System and its passive cooling system without cryocoolers makes it potentially robust for a long-life mission as JUICE is. In this paper we report the scientific objectives, discuss the design of the instrument including its complex on-board pipeline, highlight the achieved performance, and address the observation plan with the relevant instrument modes. Carbon ion radiotherapy (CIRT) has received attention for the treatment of locally recurrent rectal cancer. When the surrounding primary organs are close to the irradiation site, a spacer is required to ensure safe irradiation. This work describes a novel technique using a bioabsorbable polyglycolic acid spacer placed laparoscopically and presents a technical report with five case studies. The short‐term surgical outcomes were as follows: mean operating time 235 min with blood loss of 38 mL. CIRT was planned, and the patients underwent irradiation within 2 months of surgery. Introduction: Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) is one of the treatment methods in patients with sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSNHL). It is recommended as an elective treatment in patients undergoing steroid therapy. According to current scientific reports, HBOT should be implemented within two weeks after the first symptoms. However, as far as the profile of HBOT is concerned, there are no straightforward recommendations. Methods: The data obtained from the medical records of 218 patients undergoing HBOT for SSNHL at the Military Institute of Medicine—National Research Institute were analyzed statistically for the impact of the duration and the delay in implementing HBOT on the end results of pure-tone audiometry (PTA). Results: A statistically significant hearing improvement in patients undergoing more than 15 cycles of HBOT was detected at all frequencies except for 1500 Hz; in the group reporting for treatment with a delay of more than 10 days, hearing improvement was statistically unsignificant at frequencies of 1500, 3000, and 4000 Hz. This study provides a discussion using a database of historic masonry bell towers struck by past Italian earthquakes, which is the result of an extensive literature review on post-earthquake reconnaissance reports and scientific publications. The observed damage is analysed to give an insight into the seismic behaviour and vulnerability of this peculiar building typology. To this end, a macro-scale approach is adopted, two distinct damage mechanisms are identified and evaluated, and a damage index for each tower is computed. This enables to develop the damage probability matrices, providing the frequency of damage occurrence. Moreover, vulnerability and fragility curves are derived to help the prediction of future possible damage scenarios. The developed vulnerability and fragility curves are compared with the mean damage observed in the samples included in the database. This comparison allowed to check the robustness of rapid procedures today available in the field of seismic risk assessment for the specific case of historic masonry towers. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aim: Endodontic microsurgery (EMS) of maxillary molars may represent a complex challenge to the clinician due to the location of the roots and the proximity of the maxillary sinus floor. This report aimed to describe the simultaneous use of a computer‐assisted dynamic navigation (C‐ADN) system and piezoelectric bony‐window osteotomy for the transantral microsurgical approach of a maxillary left first molar with adequate root canal filling and symptomatic apical periodontitis. Summary: This case report highlights the importance of C‐ADN to carry out a minimally invasive buccal surgical access to palatal roots affected by apical periodontitis and provides a practical example to help clinicians make treatment decisions based on the available evidence. Clinical and tomographic evaluations were performed before the surgical procedure and at 24‐month follow‐up. This case was treated using a C‐ADN system fitted to a piezotome for the buccal approach of the buccal roots, maxillary sinus membrane lifting, and for transantral location, root‐end resection, cavity preparation, and filling of the palatal root. The navigation system allowed to achieve an accurate apical canal terminus location and root‐end filling of the three roots with a minimally invasive piezoelectric crypt approach. At the 24‐month follow‐up examination, the patient remains asymptomatic, with normal periapical structures, and regeneration of maxillary sinus walls. It was concluded that the combination of dynamic navigation with piezoelectric bony‐window osteotomy offers enhanced accuracy, tissue preservation, diminished risk of iatrogenic complications, and could maximize success and survival rates in transantral EMS. Rhetorical figures of speech provide important analytical frames to chart how arguments operate within genres and within genre ecologies. Varieties of the figure prolepsis allow for the rendering of future time or fact in the present, which can be a powerful rhetorical inducement toward social and political action. In this article, we examine how anticipatory arguments drawn from complex data shape a key genre for public and policy-facing work on the climate crisis—the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change's Synthesis Report's (SYR) Statement for Policy Makers (SPM). We examine how the rhetorical figure of prolepsis operates within this genre to understand the anticipatory arguments and logics emerging from the synthesis of scientific findings and their reporting. Pairing figural studies and Rhetorical Genre Studies, we further offer an approach to investigate how these patterned operations of language might intersect in their rhetorical workings. Lunotriquetral coalitions are the most common form of carpal coalition wherein the cartilage between the lunate and triquetrum ossification centers failed to undergo apoptosis. This technical case report examines the arthrokinematics of bilateral lunotriquetral coalitions with dissimilar Minnaar types in one participant with one asymptomatic wrist and one wrist with suspected distal radioulnar joint injury. Static and dynamic (four-dimensional) CT images during pronosupination were captured using a photon-counting detector CT scanner. Interosseous proximity distributions were calculated between the lunotriquetral coalition and adjacent bones in both wrists to quantify arthrokinematics. Interosseous proximity distributions at joints adjacent to the lunotriquetral coalition demonstrate differences in median and minimum interosseous proximities between the asymptomatic and injured wrists during resisted pronosupination. Altered kinematics from lunotriquetral coalitions may be a source of ulnar-sided wrist pain and discomfort, limiting the functional range of motion. This case report highlights potential alterations to wrist arthrokinematics in the setting of lunotriquetral coalitions and possible associations with ulnar-sided wrist pain, highlighting anatomy to examine in radiographic follow-up. Furthermore, this case report demonstrates the technical feasibility of four-dimensional CT using photon-counting detector technology in assessing arthrokinematics in the setting of variant wrist anatomy. Poly(lactic acid) has great potential in sectors where degradability is an important advantage due to its polymer nature. The medical, pharmaceutical, and packaging industries have shown interest in using PLA. To overcome the limitations of stiffness and brittleness in the polymer, researchers have conducted numerous modifications to develop fibers with improved properties. One such modification involves using plasticizing modifiers that can provide additional and desired properties. The scientific reports indicate that low-molecular-weight esters (LME) (triethyl citrate and bis (2-ethylhexyl) adipate) affect the plasticization of PLA. However, the research is limited to flat structures, such as films, casts, and extruded shapes. A study was conducted to investigate the impact of esters on the process of forming, the properties, and the morphology of fibers formed through the melt-spinning method. It was found that the modified PLA required different spinning and drawing conditions compared to the unmodified polymer. DSC, FTIR, WAXD, and GPC/SEC analyses were performed for the modified fibers. Mechanical tests and morphology evaluations using SEM microscopy were also conducted. The applied plasticizers lowered the temperature of the spinning process by 40 °C, and allowed us to obtain a higher degree of crystallinity and a better tenacity at a lower draw ratio. GPC/SEC analysis confirmed that the polymer–plasticizer interaction is physical because the booth plasticizer peaks were separated in the chromatographic columns. The use of LME in fibers significantly reduces the temperature of the spinning process, which reduces production costs. Additives significantly change the production process and the structure of the fiber depending on their rate, which may affect the properties, e.g., the rate of degradation. We can master the degree of crystallinity through the variable amount of LME. The degree of crystallization of the polymers has a significant influence on polymer application. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Fluorinated imines (Schiff bases) and fluorinated hydrazones are of particular interest in medicinal chemistry due to their potential usefulness in treating opportunistic strains of bacteria that are resistant to commonly used antibacterial agents. The present review paper is focused on these fluorinated molecules revealing strong, moderate or weak in vitro antibacterial activities, which have been reported in the scientific papers during the last fifteen years. Fluorinated building blocks and reaction conditions used for the synthesis of imines and hydrazones are mentioned. The structural modifications, which have an influence on the antibacterial activity in all the reported classes of fluorinated small molecules, are highlighted, focusing mainly on the importance of specific substitutions. Background and Aim: Foot-and-mouth disease (FMD), a major transboundary animal ailment in Algeria, is a serious economic burden on the livestock sector. This study aimed to investigate the spatiotemporal distribution of FMD in Algeria and identifies the factors contributing to this phenomenon. Materials and Methods: Data on FMD cases occurring in Algeria from 2014 to 2022 were collected from various sources, including archives at the Ministry of Agriculture, peer-reviewed journal articles, conference proceedings, reference laboratory reports, and unpublished scientific reports. The data were compiled and analyzed using MS Office Excel® and SPSS® software. Results: A total of 22,690 FMD cases and 1,141 outbreaks were reported in Algeria between 2014 and 2022. The apex of infections occurred in 2014 (34.5%), followed by an increase in the number of infections in 2019 and 2017. The prevalence of FMD extended to 91.6% of the districts of the country, particularly in the north (center) and eastern regions. Cows were the most affected, with 654 outbreaks and more than 3,665 cases. Although FMD affected all four regions, there was a statistically significant long-term decline in the incidence. Conclusion: These spatial and temporal trends underscore the robust disease control methodologies implemented by the Algerian government, such as the strategic immunization of livestock to fortify their viral resistance, stringent constraints on animal mobility, and enlightenment of farmers regarding the hazards associated with unrestricted livestock movement to effectively curb FMD dissemination. People with epilepsy frequently express concern about the burden of memory problems in their everyday lives. Self-report memory questionnaires may provide valuable insight into individuals' perceptions of their everyday memory performance and changes over time. Yet, despite their potential utility, the measurement properties of self-report memory questionnaires have not been evaluated in epilepsy. This systematic review aimed to provide a critical appraisal of the measurement properties of self-report memory questionnaires for adults with epilepsy. Following protocol registration (PROSPERO CRD42020210967), a systematic search of PubMed, EMBASE, Web of Science, CINAHL, and PsychInfo from database inception until 27 May 2021 was conducted. Eligible studies were published in English-language peer-reviewed journals, recruited adults with epilepsy, and reported on the development or evaluation of the measurement properties of a self-report memory questionnaire. The COnsensus-based Standards for the selection of health Measurement INstruments (COSMIN) methodology was used to evaluate each study of a measurement property, and results were qualitatively synthesised. In total, 80 articles and one test manual were located containing 153 studies of measurement properties pertinent to 23 self-report memory questionnaires. Overall, no scale could be recommended outright for the evaluation of subjective memory symptoms in adults with epilepsy. This was due to the near absence of dedicated content validation studies relevant to this population and shortcomings in the methodology and scientific reporting of available studies of structural validity. The manuscript provides an overview of recent scientific reports on the properties and range of health-promoting effects of acerola (Malpighia emarginata DC) fruits and leaves. Acerola is a natural raw material that, in its unprocessed form, is known to be a rich source of vitamin C and polyphenolic compounds. For this reason, the consumption of acerola may provide a number of health-promoting benefits, particularly related to its strong anti-free radical effects. The review discusses anti-inflammatory and anticancer effects of acerola fruit and leaves as well as its therapeutic effects on selected physiological processes in the human system. Their biochemical mechanisms are also explained. Recommendations for the consumption of acerola in the prevention of inflammatory and free radical diseases are presented. The part of the article devoted to anticancer effects of acerola describes the possibilities of using the edible parts of this raw material to obtain products and preparations of potential use in cancer prevention and therapy. Artificial intelligence (AI) has emerged as a promising tool in the field of healthcare, with an increasing number of research articles evaluating its applications in the domain of kidney disease. To comprehend the evolving landscape of AI research in kidney disease, a bibliometric analysis is essential. The purposes of this study are to systematically analyze and quantify the scientific output, research trends, and collaborative networks in the application of AI to kidney disease. This study collected AI-related articles published between 2012 and 20 November 2023 from the Web of Science. Descriptive analyses of research trends in the application of AI in kidney disease were used to determine the growth rate of publications by authors, journals, institutions, and countries. Visualization network maps of country collaborations and author-provided keyword co-occurrences were generated to show the hotspots and research trends in AI research on kidney disease. The initial search yielded 673 articles, of which 631 were included in the analyses. Our findings reveal a noteworthy exponential growth trend in the annual publications of AI applications in kidney disease. Nephrology Dialysis Transplantation emerged as the leading publisher, accounting for 4.12% (26 out of 631 papers), followed by the American Journal of Transplantation at 3.01% (19/631) and Scientific Reports at 2.69% (17/631). The primary contributors were predominantly from the United States (n = 164, 25.99%), followed by China (n = 156, 24.72%) and India (n = 62, 9.83%). In terms of institutions, Mayo Clinic led with 27 contributions (4.27%), while Harvard University (n = 19, 3.01%) and Sun Yat-Sen University (n = 16, 2.53%) secured the second and third positions, respectively. This study summarized AI research trends in the field of kidney disease through statistical analysis and network visualization. The findings show that the field of AI in kidney disease is dynamic and rapidly progressing and provides valuable information for recognizing emerging patterns, technological shifts, and interdisciplinary collaborations that contribute to the advancement of knowledge in this critical domain. Background: Physical inactivity and a sedentary lifestyle are common among people with heart failure (HF), which may lead to worse prognosis. On an already existing mHealth platform, we developed a novel tool called the Activity coach, aimed at increasing physical activity. The aim of this study was to evaluate the usability of the Activity coach and assess feasibility of outcome measures for a future efficacy trial. Methods: A mixed-methods design was used to collect data. People with a HF diagnosis were recruited to use the Activity coach for four weeks. The Activity coach educates the user about physical activity, provides means of registering daily physical activity and helps the user to set goals for the next week. The usability was assessed by analysing system user logs for adherence, reported technical issues and by interviews about user experiences. Outcome measures assessed for feasibility were objective physical activity as measured by an accelerometer, and subjective goal attainment. Progression criteria for the usability assessment and for the proposed outcomes, were described prospectively. Results: Ten people with HF were recruited, aged 56 to 78 with median age 72. Data from nine of the ten study participants were included in the analyses. Usability: The Activity coach was used 61% of the time and during the first week two study participants called to seek technical support. The Activity coach was found to be intuitive and easy to use by all study participants. An increased motivation to be more physically active was reported by six of the nine study participants. However, in spite of feeling motivated, four reported that their habits or behaviours had not been affected by the Activity coach. Feasibility: Data was successfully stored in the deployed hardware as intended and the accelerometers were used enough, for the data to be analysable. One finding was that the subjective outcome goal attainment, was challenging to collect. A proposed mitigator for this is to use pre-defined goals in future studies, as opposed to having the study participants be completely free to formulate the goals themselves. Conclusions: It was confirmed that the Activity coach was easy to use. Furthermore, it might stimulate increased physical activity in a population of people with HF, who are physically inactive. In the context of the European Commission's proposal for the harmonization of front-of-pack nutrition labels (FoPLs) across the European Union scheduled for 2023, Portugal's position on the preferred format to be adopted remains unclear. Our study aims to (1) describe the context of the political decision regarding FoPL's implementation in Portugal, (2) identify and characterize the actors involved in the debate and (3) evaluate their influence in the decision-making process and their position on the various formats of FoPLs considered. A document review complemented by a qualitative study with eight experts revealed the actors involved in the implementation of FoPLs in Portugal. The stakeholder theory was used to qualify their level of influence on the decision. To complement the experts' analysis, the views of 1014 Portuguese consumers on stakeholders' influence were collected via an online questionnaire. The results show a strong mobilization of the Portuguese Ministry of Health on the issue through the production of several technical and scientific reports. The background of the political decision related to FoPLs in Portugal highlights the commitment of some influential stakeholders in favour of the traffic light format, including one of the major Portuguese retailers, Continente. Nevertheless, in the face of public support for the Nutri-Score from a growing number of actors, Portugal has not yet adopted a specific format, partly due to some resistance from the agricultural sector. Portugal, by lack of consensus and agenda setting, is now awaiting formal harmonization of FoPLs by the European Commission. The article presents the results of the -scattering simulation at the total energy up to 27 GeV for the SPD Technical Design Report version of the Beam–Beam Counter. Purpose: Full-endoscopic lumbar interbody fusion (FELIF) is a new-generation treatment for spondylolisthesis. However, owing to their unique characteristics, the two main endoscopic fusion trajectories, the trans-Kambin and posterolateral approaches, have important limitations. Herein, we aimed to introduce a new technique called Kambin Torpedo FELIF (KT-FELIF). Methods: The KT-FELIF technique is based on the trans-Kambin approach. It additionally completes ipsilateral total facetectomy and contralateral direct decompression. Thus, this novel technique combines the advantages of the trans-Kambin and posterolateral approaches. Results: We reported on the indications and technical steps of KT-FELIF and provided intraoperative and animated videos to clarify the procedure. Short-term follow-up based on 3-month postoperative computed tomography and plain films images taken at least 3 months after surgery showed adequate bony decompression, a large bone graft contact area, and good intervertebral trabecular bone growth without radiolucent lines between the graft, cage, and end plate. The clinical results, such as ipsilateral and contralateral visual analog scale and Oswestry disability index values, gradually improved at 1 and 3 months postoperatively. No complications were observed. Conclusions: KT-FELIF is a promising FELIF technique for achieving bilateral direct decompression through a unilateral approach while accomplishing thorough discectomy and endplate preparation. Twisted bilayer graphene (TBG) has emerged as a fascinating research frontier in condensed matter physics and materials science. This review article comprehensively overviews recent advances and future perspectives in studying TBG. The challenges associated with fabricating and characterizing TBG structures, including precise control of the twist angle and accurate determination of electronic properties, are discussed. Furthermore, the intriguing phenomena observed in TBG, such as superconductivity, insulating phases, and correlated electron states, shedding light on their underlying mechanisms, are explored. Scalability and device integration of TBG are explored, along with potential engineering strategies to tailor its properties for specific applications. Although neuroanatomical and physiological understanding of the cerebellum has evolved over recent decades and continues to develop, there is much that remains to be expounded upon, especially with regard to nonmotor roles. Neurocognitive and language processing is one area where involvement of the cerebellum is no longer in question, but the extent and mechanism of this relationship have yet to be defined. For example, which of the cerebellar hemispheres is involved continues to be debated. We present a case wherein a thrombus in the basilar artery led to bihemispheric cerebellar strokes with profound mixed effects on the patient's language and cognition. To the authors' knowledge, this is the first reported case of bilateral cerebellar strokes resulting in a mixed aphasia reported in scientific literature. Magnetoencephalography (MEG) recordings are often contaminated by interference that can exceed the amplitude of physiological brain activity by several orders of magnitude. Furthermore, the activity of interference sources may spatially extend (known as source leakage) into the activity of brain signals of interest, resulting in source estimation inaccuracies. This problem is particularly apparent when using MEG to interrogate the effects of brain stimulation on large‐scale cortical networks. In this technical report, we develop a novel denoising approach for suppressing the leakage of interference source activity into the activity representing a brain region of interest. This approach leverages spatial and temporal domain projectors for signal arising from prespecified anatomical regions of interest. We apply this denoising approach to reconstruct simulated evoked response topographies to deep brain stimulation (DBS) in a phantom recording. We highlight the advantages of our approach compared to the benchmark—spatiotemporal signal space separation—and show that it can more accurately reveal brain stimulation‐evoked response topographies. Finally, we apply our method to MEG recordings from a single patient with Parkinson's disease, to reveal early cortical‐evoked responses to DBS of the subthalamic nucleus. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Aneurysmal bone cyst is composed of variable -sized cystic blood-filled spaces separated by connective tissue septae. First-line surgical resection of spinal aneurysmal bone cyst in a child with limited total blood volume can lead to massive intraoperative bleeding, thus limiting extent of resection. Our Centre's has good experience of using absolute alcohol as an effective immediate devascularizing agent during vertebral hemangioma surgery in children. Material and methods: We report the first case of pediatric lumbar primary aneurysmal bone cyst in which completely blood-less piecemeal total resection of the lesion was performed after intraoperative absolute alcohol intralesional sclerotherapy. Results: Completely blood-less piecemeal total resection of the lumbar aneurysmal bone cyst was performed after intraoperative absolute alcohol intralesional sclerotherapy. Conclusion: Intraoperative absolute alcohol intralesional sclerotherapy is a very effective devascularizing adjunct for complete piecemeal resection of spinal aneurysmal bone cyst in children with limited blood volume. Pyogenic spinal infections (PSIs) are severe conditions with high morbidity and mortality. If medical treatment fails, patients may require surgery, but there is no consensus regarding the definition of medical treatment failure. To determine criteria for defining failure of medical treatment in PSI through an international consensus of experts. A two-round basic Delphi method study. One hundred and fifty experts from 22 countries (authors or co-authors of clinical guidelines or indexed publications on the topic) were invited to participate; 33 answered both rounds defining the criteria. A scale of 1 to 9 (1: no relevance; 9: highly relevant) applied to each criterion. We created an online survey with 10 criteria reported in the literature to define the failure of medical treatment in PSIs. We sent this survey via email to the experts. Agreement among the participants on relevant criteria (score ≥7) was determined. One month later, the second round of evaluations was sent. An extra criterion suggested by six responders in the first round was incorporated. The final version was reached with the criteria considered relevant and with high agreement. The consensus definition is: (1) There is an uncontrolled sepsis despite broad spectrum antibiotic treatment, and (2) There is an infection relapse, following a six-week period of antibiotics with clinical and laboratory improvement. Our definition of failure following nonsurgical treatment of PSI can offer a standardized approach to guide clinical decision-making. Objectives: The purpose of our study was to determine the order in which science and health researchers read scientific papers, their reasons for doing so and the perceived difficulty and perceived importance of each section. Study design and setting: An online survey open to science and health academics and researchers distributed via existing research networks, X (formerly Twitter), and LinkedIn. Results: Almost 90% of respondents self-declared to be experienced in reading research papers. 98.6% of the sample read the abstract first because it provides an overview of the paper and facilitates a decision on continuing to read on or not. Seventy-five percent perceived it to be the easiest to read and 62.4% perceived it to be very important (highest rank on a 5-point Likert scale). The majority of respondents did not read a paper in the IMRAD (Introduction, Methods, Results And Discussion) format. Perceived difficulty and perceived importance influenced reading order. Conclusion: Science and health researchers do not typically read scientific and health research papers in IMRAD format. The more important a respondent perceives a section to be, the more likely they are to read it. The easier a section is perceived, the more likely it will be read. Background: The Fuegian fox (Lycalopex culpaeus) is a rare inhabitant of the Tierra del Fuego Archipelago on account of: (a) It is the southernmost Canid in the world. (b) It is the second largest, heaviest, and tallest native Canid in South America. (c) It is currently scarce in northern Tierra del Fuego. (d) It may have been tamed by the Selk'nam natives. Methods and results: Based on chronicles and scientific reports we document the timeline since discovery of the distinctive and island-confined Fuegian fox. We pay attention to its patchwork distribution within the Fuegian archipelago, with populations spread on the large Tierra del Fuego Island (Fuegia) and on two smaller ones, Hoste and Gable. This fox seems to have disappeared recently from the latter and historic records from Navarino Island are dubious. We provide new distributional records and unpublished photographs. Among the socio-ecological aspects studied, we highlight the relationships of this fox with two local indigenous people: The Yahgan and the Selk´nam. Discussion: The introduction of sheep Ovis aries in 1885 and the ensuing persecution of its putative predators apparently caused the fox decline from the northern half of Fuegia. The introduction of the continental Chilla fox Lycalopex griseus in 1951 further impacted the Fuegian fox, apparently by competition for food but perhaps also by diseases. It is currently concentrated in the southern half of Tierra del Fuego Island. The possibility that the Selk'nam introduced this fox from the mainland and that they tamed it, is also discussed. Background: Meningiomas are common intradural extramedullary spinal tumors, which arise from arachnoid cap cells in the leptomeninges surrounding the brain or spinal cord. Sensory and motor dysfunction as well as pain were the most common presenting symptoms. Surgical resection remains the primary treatment for spinal intradural extramedullary meningiomas. Traditionally, spinal meningiomas excision requires longer skin incision, bilateral subperiosteal muscle stripping, and total laminectomy. We report a new technique for the treatment of thoracic spinal intradural extramedullary meningioma, which involves the use of unilateral biportal endoscopy (UBE) technique to resect the tumor, and reviewed and analyzed relevant literature. Case presentation: A 69-year-old female patient presented with back pain accompanied by slowly progressive lower limb paresis, and severe pain in the right lower limb. Magnetic resonance imaging suggests a thoracic spinal intradural extramedullary meningioma. She underwent meningioma resection using UBE technique with complete recovery at the follow-up examination 3 months after surgery. BioGlue is one of the best-known substances used as a tissue adhesive during surgical procedures, especially in cardiac surgery. Inappropriate use of BioGlue can result in inflammation in both the heart and adjacent tissues after its intraoperative application. Inflammation caused by BioGlue in cardiac surgery is a topic that has been discussed by numerous authors in scientific studies, meta-analyses and evaluations of this tissue adhesive. However, there is a lack of collected knowledge on this subject in a single concise article. The purpose of this paper is to review the current medical knowledge on the use of BioGlue in cardiac surgery versus the induction of an inflammatory response. This technical report illustrates the technique to perform computed tomography (CT)-guided bone biopsies in the body and dens of the axis (C2 vertebra) through a posterior transpedicular approach with the use of preoperative contrast-enhanced scans to highlight the course of the vertebral artery. The technique is presented through two exemplification cases: a pediatric patient with osteoblastoma and secondary aneurysmal bone cyst and one adult patient with melanoma metastasis. This case highlights the potential of the CT-guided posterolateral/transpedicular approach for performing safe and effective biopsies in the body and dens of C2, even in pediatric patients. This Brief Guide reintroduces readers to the main concepts and technical tools used for the evaluation and expression of measurement uncertainty, including both classical and Bayesian statistical methods. The general approach is the same that was adopted by the Guide to the Expression of Uncertainty in Measurement (GUM): quantities whose values are surrounded by uncertainty are modeled as random variables, which enables the application of a wide range of techniques from probability and statistics to the evaluation of measurement uncertainty. All the methods presented are illustrated with examples involving real measurement results from a wide range of fields of chemistry and related sciences, ranging from classical analytical chemistry as practiced at the beginning to the 20th century, to contemporary studies of isotopic compositions of the elements and clinical trials. Carotenoids are naturally occurring compounds that are abundant and possess synergistic properties, contributing to their potential health benefits. This review provides an analysis of synergistic relationships among carotenoid compounds. The concept of synergy is of utmost importance due to the ongoing emphasis on consumer safety issues related to botanical natural products. To date, there is a lack of scientific reports specifically investigating the experimental evidence of synergistic effects associated with carotenoids. The carotenoid compounds purported to exhibit synergistic actions have demonstrated significant efficacy in combating oxidation, neurological diseases, peptic ulcers, tumors, and various other ailments. Furthermore, there have been reports of cancer prevention through apoptosis and the presence of antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and estrogenic properties. In addition to the observed combined benefits of carotenoids, this review elucidates the various health advantages associated with carotenoids. Among carotenoids, a substantial amount of data has been reported concerning lycopene. This review also examined the clinical status of the concurrent utilization of carotenoids with other bioactive molecules. Pancreatic tumor enucleation is a procedure that can preserve pancreatic function and is sometimes performed using a minimally invasive approach. Recently, a single‐port robotic platform called da Vinci SP has been developed. However, the technical details of pancreatic tumor enucleation using da Vinci SP have not been reported to date. We report a male patient in his 70s who underwent robotic SP pancreatic tumor enucleation for a pancreatic neuroendocrine tumor. The dissection between the tumor and pancreatic parenchyma was performed using the double bipolar technique. The operative time was 139 min, and the estimated blood loss was 4 mL. The patient had an uneventful recovery and was discharged on the sixth day after the surgery. This study aims to understand how ideologies become embedded in political projects through strategies of legitimation aimed at justifying specific ideas, beliefs, and emotions. By using the political negotiation between the Justice and Development Party (AKP) and the Republican People's Party (CHP) concerning the Canal Istanbul Project as an illustrative example from Turkey to 'ideology in action', this article shows how various rhetorical combinations appeal to an analysis of 'ideology at work'. Our analysis is based on 20 in-depth interviews with both opponents and supporters of the project, in addition to a comparison of two official websites providing scientific evidence from each party's perspective. The results show that the two poles of the dispute aim to recruit more people as their political supporters by using their own scientific reports with claims that they are 'objective' and aspire for the benefit of Istanbul. Background: Gastric cancer (GC), a significant health burden worldwide, is typically diagnosed in the advanced stages due to its non-specific symptoms and complex morphological features. Deep learning (DL) has shown potential for improving and standardizing early GC detection. This systematic review aims to evaluate the current status of DL in pre-malignant, early-stage, and gastric neoplasia analysis. Methods: A comprehensive literature search was conducted in PubMed/MEDLINE for original studies implementing DL algorithms for gastric neoplasia detection using endoscopic images. We adhered to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. The focus was on studies providing quantitative diagnostic performance measures and those comparing AI performance with human endoscopists. Results: Our review encompasses 42 studies that utilize a variety of DL techniques. The findings demonstrate the utility of DL in GC classification, detection, tumor invasion depth assessment, cancer margin delineation, lesion segmentation, and detection of early-stage and pre-malignant lesions. Notably, DL models frequently matched or outperformed human endoscopists in diagnostic accuracy. However, heterogeneity in DL algorithms, imaging techniques, and study designs precluded a definitive conclusion about the best algorithmic approach. Conclusions: The promise of artificial intelligence in improving and standardizing gastric neoplasia detection, diagnosis, and segmentation is significant. This review is limited by predominantly single-center studies and undisclosed datasets used in AI training, impacting generalizability and demographic representation. Further, retrospective algorithm training may not reflect actual clinical performance, and a lack of model details hinders replication efforts. More research is needed to substantiate these findings, including larger-scale multi-center studies, prospective clinical trials, and comprehensive technical reporting of DL algorithms and datasets, particularly regarding the heterogeneity in DL algorithms and study designs. The capability of R to do symbolic mathematics is enhanced by the reticulate and caracas packages. The workhorse behind these packages is the Python computer algebra library SymPy. Via reticulate, the SymPy library can be accessed from within R. This, however, requires some knowledge of SymPy, Python and reticulate. The caracas package, on the other hand, provides access to SymPy (via reticulate) but by using R syntax, and this is the main contribution of caracas. We show examples of how to use the SymPy library from R via reticulate and caracas. Using caracas, we demonstrate how mathematics and statistics can benefit from bridging computer algebra and data via R. The caracas package integrates well with Rmarkdown and Quarto, and as such supports creation of teaching material and scientific reports. Objective: To introduce a technique of laminotomy using a common trephine to enlarge the interlaminar space at L4/5 segment for interlaminar endoscopic lumbar discectomy (IELD) and report the anatomical basis of this procedure, technical details, as well as primary clinical outcomes of a consecutive patient cohort with L4/5 lumbar disc herniation (LDH). Methods: On anteroposterior fluoroscopy, the intersection of the medial edge of the inferior articular process and the inferior endplate of L4 vertebra was taken as the target. Using a common trephine, laminotomy was performed to remove a big portion of the posterior wall of the canal under the guidance of endoscopy. From June 2018 to December 2021, the consecutive patients who underwent L4/5 IELD were prospectively studied. Clinical outcomes were assessed at the day before surgery, 1 day, 1 month, 3 months, 12 months after surgery, and the last follow-up. Numerical Rating Scale, Roland-Morris Disability Questionnaire (RMDQ), and MacNab criteria were used to evaluate back and leg pain, the quality of life, and clinical efficacy, respectively. Results: There were 64 men and 44 women, with an age of 50.3 ± 14.9 years. The operating time was 74.54 ± 17.42 minutes. The mean follow-up time was 32.7 ± 18.6 months (range, 12-64 months). The complications of IELD included numbness, neck pain, and recurrence. Both leg pain (6.2 ± 1.9 vs. 1.8 ± 0.8, p < 0.001) and back pain (3.1 ± 2.3 vs. 1.7 ± 0.9, p < 0.001) quickly improved after this procedure and maintained (1.1 ± 1.5, 1.1 ± 1.3) at final follow-up. Physical disability due to back pain, as assessed using RMDQ, was improved remarkably after surgery (15.0 ± 5.8 vs. 2.9 ± 4.1, p < 0.001). In addition, MacNab outcome grade was evaluated as good-to-excellent in 96 cases (88.9%). Conclusion: A convenient technique of laminotomy using a common trephine was proposed for the L4/5 IELD. It can efficiently enlarge the interlaminar entry to perform endoscopic discectomy. Introduction: Hemivertebrae are a common defect of vertebral formation, potentially resulting in debilitating congenital scoliosis and necessitating highly traumatic surgery. Virtual surgical planning (VSP) and 3D-printed patient-specific implants (PSIs) have increasingly been applied to complex spinal surgery, and offer a range of potential benefits. Research Question: We report the use of 3D-printed PSIs and VSP as part of a two-level anterior lumbar interbody fusion (ALIF) for the management of lateral hemivertebra and congenital scoliosis. Material and Methods: A 53-year-old male with chronic low-back pain, due to L4 hemivertebra and mild congenital scoliosis, presented with new-onset leg pain. CT revealed L4/5 and L5/S1 degeneration and foraminal stenosis. Given the complex anatomy and extensive multi-level osteophytosis, 3D-printed PSIs were designed, manufactured, and implanted as part of a two-level ALIF. Results: Excellent implant fit was achieved intraoperatively, confirmed via postoperative imaging. VSP assisted with navigating challenging bony and vascular anatomy. Three-month postoperative imaging demonstrated construct stability, early signs of bony fusion, with implant placement, spinal curvature, and disc height corrections closely matching the VSP. Clinically, the patient’s pain and functional impairment had effectively resolved by nine-month follow up, as demonstrated through subjective and objective measures. Discussion and Conclusions: Virtual surgical planning and 3D-printed PSIs can be useful surgical aids in the management of the often-complex cases involving hemivertebrae and congenital scoliosis. This case of congenital pathology adds to the growing reports of PSI application to a variety of complex spinal pathologies, with analyses showing a close match of the postoperative construct to the preoperative VSP. This scientific report provides an update of the Xylella spp. host plant database, aiming to provide information and scientific support to risk assessors, risk managers and researchers dealing with Xylella spp. Upon a mandate of the European Commission, EFSA created and regularly updates a database of host plant species of Xylella spp. The current mandate covers the period 2021–2026. This report is related to the ninth version of the database published in Zenodo in the EFSA Knowledge Junction community, covering literature published from 1 January 2023 up to 30 June 2023, and recent Europhyt outbreak notifications. Informative data have been extracted from 47 selected publications. Seven new host plants were identified and added to the database. These plant species were naturally infected by X. fastidiosa subsp. multiplex in France, Spain and the United States. No additional data were retrieved for X. taiwanensis, and no additional multilocus sequence tipes (STs) were identified worldwide. New information on the tolerant/resistant response of plant species to X. fastidiosa infection were added to the database. The Xylella spp. host plant species were listed in different categories based on the number and type of detection methods applied for each finding. The overall number of Xylella spp. host plants determined with at least two different detection methods or positive with one method (between sequencing and pure culture isolation (category A), reaches now 439 plant species, 200 genera and 69 families. In the past decade, extracellular vesicles (EVs) have attracted substantial interest in biomedicine. With progress in the field, we have an increasing understanding of cellular responses to EVs. In this Technical Report, we describe the direct nanoinjection of EVs into the cytoplasm of single cells of different cell lines. By using robotic fluidic force microscopy (robotic FluidFM), nanoinjection of GFP positive EVs and EV‐like particles into single live HeLa, H9c2, MDA‐MB‐231 and LCLC‐103H cells proved to be feasible. This injection platform offered the advantage of high cell selectivity and efficiency. The nanoinjected EVs were initially localized in concentrated spot‐like regions within the cytoplasm. Later, they were transported towards the periphery of the cells. Based on our proof‐of‐principle data, robotic FluidFM is suitable for targeting single living cells by EVs and may lead to information about intracellular EV cargo delivery at a single‐cell level.
