The super-ballistic temperature dependence of thermal conductivity, facilitated by collective phonons, has been widely studied. It has been claimed to be unambiguous evidence for hydrodynamic phonon transport in solids. Alternatively, hydrodynamic thermal conduction is predicted to be as strongly dependent on the width of the structure as is fluid flow, while its direct demonstration remains an unexplored challenge. In this work, we experimentally measured thermal conductivity in several graphite ribbon structures with different widths, from 300 nm to 1.2 µm, and studied its width dependence in a wide temperature range of 10–300 K. We observed enhanced width dependence of the thermal conductivity in the hydrodynamic window of 75 K compared to that in the ballistic limit, which provides indispensable evidence for phonon hydrodynamic transport from the perspective of peculiar width dependence. This will help to find the missing piece to complete the puzzle of phonon hydrodynamics, and guide future attempts at efficient heat dissipation in advanced electronic devices.

Mammalian circadian rhythms are driven by the transcriptional-translational feedback loop of clock genes in the hypothalamic suprachiasmatic nucleus. However, chronic methamphetamine treatment induces circadian activity rhythms in arrhythmic animals with suprachiasmatic nucleus lesions or clock gene deletions. Activation of dopaminergic neurotransmission by methamphetamine is considered to induce activity rhythms. Adenosine antagonizes the actions of dopamine at heteromers of dopamine and adenosine receptors (dopamine D1 and adenosine A1 receptors, dopamine D2 and adenosine A2A receptors). In this study, we considered that adenosine inhibition acts similarly to methamphetamine, and administered an antagonist of adenosine A1 and A2A receptors, caffeine, in drinking water. Chronic caffeine treatment extended the circadian activity period of wild-type mice under constant darkness. The circadian period extension continued for three weeks after the replacement of caffeine with water. Chronic caffeine treatment induced circasemidian (~12 h), circadian, and longer-period activity rhythms in clock gene deficient, cryptochrome (Cry) 1 and Cry 2 double knockout mice under constant darkness. These activity rhythms changed periods spontaneously over time and became arrhythmic upon caffeine withdrawal. In humans, rhythms with shorter or longer than 24 h periods are hypothesized to cause internal desynchronization of the sleep-wake rhythm from the ~ 24 h body temperature rhythm under temporal isolation. Circasemidian rhythms are hypothesized to cause afternoon sleepiness and nap. Caffeine-induced rhythms may help in understanding rhythms with not around 24 h periods in humans.

Our previous study found that 17β-estradiol (E2) suppresses primordial follicle activation and growth in cultured mouse ovaries. In this study, we administered tamoxifen, an estrogen receptor antagonist, into the abdominal cavity of mice to clarify the relationship between primordial follicle activation and the physiological concentration of E2 in mouse ovaries. The results showed that tamoxifen promoted primordial follicle activation. Administration of tamoxifen promoted degradation of the extracellular matrix surrounding primordial follicles in the ovaries. Furthermore, tamoxifen decreased the expression of stefin A, an inhibitor of cathepsins that digest some proteins and extracellular matrix, in the ovaries. Mechanical stress produced by the extracellular matrix reportedly suppresses the activation of primordial follicles. The collective results show that tamoxifen can promote primordial follicle activation through the degradation of the extracellular matrix surrounding primordial follicles. Our results indicate that E2 suppresses primordial follicle activation in vivo and that tamoxifen may be useful as a therapeutic agent against infertility. Graphical abstract

This study aimed to clarify the physiological mechanism regulating the growth of primordial follicles in mouse ovaries. In a previous study, we found that increasing the fetal bovine serum concentration in the culture medium promoted the growth of primordial follicles in cultured postnatal day 0 ovaries but not in cultured postnatal day 4 ovaries. Based on these results, we hypothesized that the regulatory system repressing the growth of primordial follicles is established in postnatal day 4 ovaries. To confirm this hypothesis, microarray analysis of postnatal day 0 and 4 ovaries was performed. The results revealed that the expression of mRNA of stefin A homologs increased in postnatal day 4 ovaries. Stefin A belonging to the type 1 cystatin superfamily is an inhibitor of cysteine cathepsins. Consistently, the inhibitor of cathepsins repressed the growth of primordial follicles in cultured postnatal day 0 ovaries. Furthermore, we found that 17β-estradiol promoted the expression of mRNA of stefin A homologs in cultured ovaries and repressed the growth of primordial follicles. Our results demonstrate that 17β-estradiol and cathepsins regulate the growth of primordial follicles in mouse ovaries.

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) patients are exposed to nighttime hypoxia during sleep by intermittent airway closure and feel daytime strong sleepiness. Strangely, insomnia co-occur in some OSA patients, which is called co-morbid insomnia and sleep apnea (COMISA). Here, we show activity responses to daytime hypoxia (DHx) in nocturnal mice were comparable to daytime sleepiness and co-occurring nighttime insomnia in COMISA. DHx reduced activity in active phase (AP) and increased following activity in activity ending phase (AEP). This down-and-up activity response (DUR) by DHx was also observed in molecular clock deficient Cry1 and Cry2 double knockout mice (CryDKO) expressing nighttime activity rise under light-dark cycle (LD) and not observed in arrhythmic CryDKO under constant darkness (DD). When daytime timing hypoxia was exposed at transition from LD to DD, about every 6 h down and up and down wavelike activity responses appeared in arrhythmic CryDKO. Results indicate this wavelike response and AP activity overlap and cause DUR in rhythmic mice. DHx increased plasma corticosterone and this increase antagonized AP activity reduction by DHx. DHx reduced forebrain adenosine and morning adenosine inhibition by caffeine induced DUR. Adenosine inhibition by caffeine or istradefylline at transition from LD to DD induced wavelike response in CryDKO. It is possible that wavelike response is damped oscillation because, interestingly, chronic caffeine treatment induced circasemidian and/or circadian activity rhythms in arrhythmic CryDKO. Evening caffeine attenuated DUR by DHx, which suggested adenosine inhibition chronotherapy may improve OSA/COMISA symptoms. Our animal model will be useful to understand COMISA.SignificanceObstructive sleep apnea patients (OSA) are exposed to nighttime hypoxia during sleep. OSA feels daytime strong sleepiness and increases risk of many diseases. Insomnia occurs in not a few OSA, which is called comorbid insomnia and sleep apnea (COMISA). We show here a mouse model of COMISA. In mice, daytime hypoxia exposure induced following down and up activity response (DUR), activity reduction in active phase and increase in activity ending phase, which corresponded to sleepiness and insomnia in COMISA. We found DUR was clock gene independent and might be driven by circasemidian system. Glucocorticoid and forebrain adenosine response were involved in DUR. Caffeine chronotherapy was effective in DUR. Our model may be useful to understand COMISA.

In recent times, the unique collective transport physics of phonon hydrodynamics motivates theoreticians and experimentalists to explore it in micro- and nanoscale and at elevated temperatures. Graphitic materials have been predicted to facilitate hydrodynamic heat transport with their intrinsically strong normal scattering. However, owing to the experimental difficulties and vague theoretical understanding, the observation of phonon Poiseuille flow in graphitic systems remains challenging. In this study, based on a microscale experimental platform and the pertinent occurrence criterion in anisotropic solids, we demonstrate the existence of the phonon Poiseuille flow in a 5.5 μm-wide, suspended and isotopically purified graphite ribbon up to a temperature of 90 K. Our observation is well supported by our theoretical model based on a kinetic theory with fully first-principles inputs. Thus, this study paves the way for deeper insight into phonon hydrodynamics and cutting-edge heat manipulating applications.

Light is an important cue for resetting the circadian clock. In mammals, light signals are thought to be transmitted to the cAMP response element (CRE) via a binding protein (CREB) to induce the expression of Per1 and Per2 genes in the mammalian circadian pacemaker, the suprachiasmatic nuclei (SCN). Several in vitro studies have suggested candidate CRE sites that contribute to the Per1 and Per2 induction by light, resulting in a phase shift of the circadian rhythm. However, it remains unclear whether the CREs are responsible for the light-induced Per1/2 induction. To address this question, we generated CRE-deleted mice in the Per1 and Per2 promoter regions. Deletion of a cAMP-responsive CRE in the Per1 promoter blunted light-induced Per1 expression in the SCN at night, while deletion of an ATF4 (CREB-2)-associated CRE in the Per2 promoter had no effect on its expression. These results suggested that the CRE in the Per1 promoter works for light induction but not CRE in the Per2 promoter. Behavioral rhythms observed under some light conditions were not affected by the CRE-deletion in Per1 promoter, suggesting that the attenuated Per1 induction did not affect the entrainment in some light conditions.

Hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) is a layered material that is generating interest in various fields owing to its fascinating properties. We present a multi-stranded analysis of carbon defects in h-BN using intentionally carbon (C)-doped h-BN crystals. Carbon defects were introduced into h-BN crystals synthesized under high-pressure and high-temperature (HPHT) conditions by a process of carbon annealing. We employ an innovative approach to explore impurity states in our C-doped h-BN by assembling it into van der Waals heterostructures with other 2D materials. Attaching graphene as a probe material to determine the impurity states in the h-BN bandgap, we locate an acceptor state above the Dirac point of graphene on C-doped h-BN, which causes anomalous bending in the Landau fan diagram. Furthermore, we adopt tungsten disulfide (WS2) as another probe material and assess the influence of C-doped h-BN on the emission spectrum of the WS2 monolayers. Our work reveals the nature of the carbon impurities in h-BN and also uncovers their effects on adjacent 2D materials.

We report the first cyclotron resonance study of monolayer graphene under double-moire potentials in which the crystal axis of graphene is nearly aligned to those of both the top and bottom hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) layers. Under mid-infrared light irradiation, we observe cyclotron resonance absorption with the following unique features: (1) cyclotron resonance magnetic field BCR is entirely different from that of nonaligned monolayer graphene, (2) BCR exhibits strong electron-hole asymmetry, and (3) splitting of BCR is observed for |ν| < 1, with the split maximum at |ν| = 1, resulting in eyeglass-shaped trajectories. These features are well explained by considering the large bandgap induced by the double moire potentials, the electron-hole asymmetry in the Fermi velocity, and the Fermi-level-dependent enhancement of spin gaps, which suggests a large electron-electron correlation contribution in this system.

Deep-learning algorithms enable precise image recognition based on high-dimensional hierarchical image features. Here, we report the development and implementation of a deep-learning-based image segmentation algorithm in an autonomous robotic system to search for two-dimensional (2D) materials. We trained the neural network based on Mask-RCNN on annotated optical microscope images of 2D materials (graphene, hBN, MoS2, and WTe2). The inference algorithm is run on a 1024 × 1024 px2 optical microscope images for 200 ms, enabling the real-time detection of 2D materials. The detection process is robust against changes in the microscopy conditions, such as illumination and color balance, which obviates the parameter-tuning process required for conventional rule-based detection algorithms. Integrating the algorithm with a motorized optical microscope enables the automated searching and cataloging of 2D materials. This development will allow researchers to utilize a large number of 2D materials simply by exfoliating and running the automated searching process. To facilitate research, we make the training codes, dataset, and model weights publicly available.

Intraocular pressure (IOP) is important in glaucoma development and depends on aqueous humor (AH) dynamics, involving inflow from the ciliary body and outflow through the trabecular meshwork (TM). IOP has a circadian rhythm entrained by sympathetic noradrenaline (NE) or adrenal glucocorticoids (GCs). Here, we investigated the involvement of GC and NE in AH outflow. Pharmacological prevention of inflow/outflow in mice indicated an AH outflow increase during day. Although TM phagocytosis can determine AH drainage, only NE showed a non-self-sustained inhibitory effect in phagocytosis of immortalized human TM cells. Pharmacological approach and RNA interference identified β1-adrenergic receptor (AR)-mediated cAMP-EPAC-SHIP1 signal activation by ablation of phosphatidylinositol triphosphate regulating phagocytic cup formation. Furthermore, pharmacological instillation in mice revealed the role of β1-AR-EPAC-SHIP1 pathway in nocturnal IOP rise. These suggest that IOP rhythm is partially regulated by this pathway. This first demonstration of TM phagocytosis suppression by NE could be useful in glaucoma management.

Landau levels (LLs) of ABA-stacked trilayer graphene (TLG) are described as the combination of monolayer graphene-like LLs and bilayer graphene-like LLs. They are extremely sensitive to the applied perpendicular electric displacement field D. Here, we demonstrate the electrical control of cyclotron resonance (CR) in a dual-gated ABA-stacked TLG. Under the irradiation of mid-infrared light, we observed the photovoltage induced by the CR absorption through the photothermoelectric effect. The resonant magnetic field in CR is changed by applying D while keeping the carrier density constant. Numerical simulations based on the tight-binding model complement the experimental observations. We believe that the present study provides a boost to graphene-based photodetectors and photoemitters with an electrically tunable wavelength in mid-infrared to terahertz spectral ranges.

Hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) crystals grown under ultrahigh pressures and ultrahigh temperatures exhibit a high crystallinity and are used throughout the world as ideal substrates and insulating layers in van der Waals heterostructures. However, in their central region, these crystals have domains which contain a significant density of carbon impurities. In this study, we utilized cathodoluminescence and far-ultraviolet photoluminescence to reveal that the carbon (C)-rich domain can exist even after exfoliation. Then, we studied the carrier transport of graphene in h-BN/graphene/h-BN van der Waals heterostructures, precisely arranging the graphene to straddle the border of the C-rich domain in h-BN. We found that the carrier mobility of graphene on the C-rich h-BN domain was significantly suppressed. In addition, characteristic bending of the Landau fan diagram was observed on the electron-doped side. These results suggest that the C-rich domain in h-BN forms an impurity level and induces extrinsic carrier scattering into adjacent graphene.

We demonstrate the dry release transfer of single-layer and bi-layer graphene and few-layer h-BN by utilizing poly(propylene) carbonate (PPC) films. Because of the strong adhesion between PPC and 2D materials around room temperature, we demonstrate that single-layer to few-layer graphene, as well as few-layer h-BN can be fabricated on a spin-coated PPC film/SiO2/Si substrate via the mechanical exfoliation method. In addition, we show that these single-layer to few-layer crystals are clearly distinguishable using an optical microscope with the help of optical interference. Because of the thermoplastic properties of PPC film, the adhesion between the 2D materials and PPC significantly decreases at about 70 °C. Therefore, by tuning the temperature, the graphene and h-BN flakes on PPC can be easily dry-transferred onto another h-BN substrate. We demonstrate the fabrication of encapsulated h-BN/graphene/h-BN devices and graphene/few-layer h-BN/graphene vertical-tunnel-junction devices using this method. Our finding provides a simple method for constructing high-quality graphene and h-BN-based van der Waals heterostructures with a minimum amount of polymer contamination.

We report the demonstration of defect-assisted tunneling spectroscopy of the electronic band structure in twisted bilayer graphene (tBLG)/hexagonal boron nitride ( h-BN) moiré superlattices in which the moiré period between the two graphene layers is close to that between the graphene and h-BN layers. We measured both the in-plane and vertical carrier transport in the tBLG/ h-BN van der Waals (vdW) tunneling device. The moiré periods were determined from the in-plane carrier transport measurements. The observed vertical tunneling transport characteristics indicated that resonant tunneling occurs from the graphite electrode to tBLG through localized defect states in the h-BN tunnel barrier. We observed multiple defect-assisted resonant tunneling trajectories, from which we derived the density of states (DOS) for tBLG. The obtained DOS has broad flatband features, in qualitative agreement with the theoretical predictions. Furthermore, we obtained three types of DOS, suggesting that we probed local band structures corresponding to AA, AB/BA, and domain wall sites in tBLG. Thus, defect-assisted tunneling spectroscopy has potential as a tool to determine the local band structures in twisted 2D vdW materials.

Few-layer transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) exhibit out-of-plane wave function confinement with subband quantization. This phenomenon is totally absent in monolayer crystals and is regarded as resulting from a naturally existing van der Waals quantum-well state. Because the energy separation between the subbands corresponds to the infrared wavelength range, few-layer TMDs are attractive for their potential to facilitate the application of TMD semiconductors as infrared photodetectors and emitters. The luminescence yield of transition metal dichalcogenide monolayers frequently suffers from the formation of long-lived dark states, which include excitons with intervalley charge carriers, spin-forbidden transitions, and a large center-of-mass momentum located outside the light cone of dispersion relations. Efficient relaxation from bright exciton states to dark states suppresses the quantum yield of photon emission. In addition, the radiative recombination of excitons is heavily influenced by Auger-type exciton-exciton scattering, which yields another nonradiative relaxation channel at room temperature. Here, we show that Auger-type scattering is promoted not only between (bright) excitons but also between excitons and long-lived dark states. We studied the luminescence dynamics of monolayer ${\mathrm{WS}}_{2}$ capped with hexagonal BN over broad time ranges of picoseconds to milliseconds using carefully designed pump-and-probe techniques. We observed that luminescence quenching associated with Auger-type scattering occurs on 1--100-$\ensuremath{\mu}\mathrm{s}$ timescales, which thus correspond to the lifetimes of the relevant dark states. The broad distribution of the measured lifetimes implies the impact of various types of long-lived states on the exciton annihilation process.

We demonstrate twist-controlled resonant tunneling in a monolayer graphene (MLG)/hexagonal boron nitride ( h-BN)/ABA-stacked trilayer graphene (TLG) van der Waals (vdW) junction, in which MLG and TLG flakes are aligned with a small twist angle θ of ∼1.05° between their crystallographic orientations through a thin h-BN barrier. Owing to the small interlayer twist, resonant tunneling attributed to the conservation of momentum and energy was observed between the single linear band of MLG and multiple subbands of TLG. We show that different subbands of TLG—bilayer-graphene-like subbands and a MLG-like subband—exhibit distinctly different resonant tunneling behaviors. Therefore, we demonstrate subband-resolved resonant tunneling. This technique provides a method to determine band parameters (Slonczewski–Weiss–McClure parameters) and probes the band dispersion of different two-dimensional materials by utilizing a MLG electrode.

Bloch electrons lacking inversion symmetry exhibit orbital magnetic moments owing to the rotation around their center of mass; this moment induces a valley splitting in a magnetic field. For the graphene/h-BN moiré superlattice, inversion symmetry is broken by the h-BN. The superlattice potential generates a series of Dirac points (DPs) and van Hove singularities (vHSs) within an experimentally accessible low energy state, providing a platform to study orbital moments with respect to band structure. In this work, theoretical calculations and magnetothermoelectric measurements are combined to reveal the emergence of an orbital magnetic moment at vHSs in graphene/h-BN moiré superlattices. The thermoelectric signal for the vHS at the low energy side of the hole-side secondary DP exhibited significant magnetic field-induced valley splitting with an effective g-factor of approximately 130; splitting for other vHSs was negligible. This was attributed to the emergence of an orbital magnetic moment at the second vHS at the hole-side., An orbital magnetic moment emerges as a result of inversion symmetry broken at the graphene/h-BN moiré superlattice. Here, Moriya et al. report thermoelectric evidence of magnetic field induced valley splitting for a van Hove singularity in this superlattice, suggesting the emergence of an orbital magnetic moment.

We demonstrate 3D mechanical manipulations, such as sliding, rotating, folding, flipping, and exfoliating, of 2D materials using a microdome polymer (MDP) via in situ real-time observation with an optical microscope. A dimethylpolysiloxane (PDMS)-based MDP is covered with a poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) adhesion layer. This PVC-MDP structure enables us to achieve small and adjustable contact areas between the PVC-MDP and a 2D-material flake, which is typically between ∼10 and ∼100 μm in diameter. The adhesion between the PVC polymer and 2D materials is fully tunable with temperature: Strong adhesion at ∼70 °C allows pick-up of the 2D material, and release occurs at ∼130 °C when the adhesion is weak. Thus the PVC-MDP functions as a point-of-contact manipulator for 2D materials, permitting the 3D manipulation of 2D-material flakes. Our method could facilitate the expansion of van der Waals heterostructure fabrication technology and the development of preparation techniques for more complex 3D structures.

Purpose Elevated IOP can cause the development of glaucoma. The circadian rhythm of IOP depends on the dynamics of the aqueous humor and is synchronized with the circadian rhythm pacemaker, that is, the suprachiasmatic nucleus. The suprachiasmatic nucleus resets peripheral clocks via sympathetic nerves or adrenal glucocorticoids. However, the detailed mechanisms underlying IOP rhythmicity remain unclear. The purpose of this study was to verify this regulatory pathway. Methods Adrenalectomy and/or superior cervical ganglionectomy were performed in C57BL/6J mice. Their IOP rhythms were measured under light/dark cycle and constant dark conditions. Ocular administration of corticosterone or norepinephrine was also performed. Localization of adrenergic receptors, glucocorticoid receptors, and clock proteins Bmal1 and Per1 were analyzed using immunohistochemistry. Period2::luciferase rhythms in the cultured iris/ciliary bodies of adrenalectomized and/or superior cervical ganglionectomized mice were monitored to evaluate the effect of the procedures on the local clock. The IOP rhythm of retina and ciliary epithelium-specific Bmal1 knockout mice were measured to determine the significance of the local clock. Results Adrenalectomy and superior cervical ganglionectomy disrupted IOP rhythms and the circadian clock in the iris/ciliary body cultures. Instillation of corticosterone and norepinephrine restored the IOP rhythm. β2-Adrenergic receptors, glucocorticoid receptors, and clock proteins were strongly expressed within the nonpigmented epithelia of the ciliary body. However, tissue-specific Bmal1 knock-out mice maintained their IOP rhythm. Conclusions These findings suggest direct driving of the IOP rhythm by the suprachiasmatic nucleus, via the dual corticosterone and norepinephrine pathway, but not the ciliary clock, which may be useful for chronotherapy of glaucoma.

Hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) synthesized under high pressure and high temperature (HPHT) has been used worldwide in two-dimensional (2D) materials research as an essential material for constructing van der Waals heterostructures. Here, we study h-BN synthesized with another method, i.e., via synthesis at atmospheric pressure and high temperature (APHT) using a metal alloy solvent. First, we examine the APHT h-BN in a bulk crystal form using cathodoluminescence and find that it does not have carbon-rich domains that inevitably exist in a core region of all the HPHT h-BN crystals. Next, we statistically compare the size of the crystal flakes exfoliated on a SiO2/Si substrate from APHT and HPHT h-BN crystals by employing our automated 2D material searching system. Finally, we provide direct evidence that APHT h-BN can serve as a high-quality substrate for 2D materials by demonstrating high carrier mobility, ballistic transport, and Hofstadter butterfly in graphene and photoluminescence in WS2.

Proper development and maturation of oocytes requires interaction with granulosa cells. Previous reports have indicated that mammalian oocytes connect with cumulus cells through gap junctions at the tip of transzonal projections that extend from the cells. Although the gap junctions between oocytes and transzonal projections provide a pathway through which small molecules (1 kDa are transported between the oocytes and cumulus cells. In this study, we presented new connections between oocytes and granulosa cells. The green fluorescein protein Aequorea coerulescens green fluorescein protein (AcGFP1) localizing in oocyte cell membrane, 1,1'-dioctadecyl-3,3,3',3'-tetramethylindocarbocyanine perchlorate and dextran conjugates (10,000 MW) injected into the oocytes, which were unable to pass through gap junctions, were diffused from the oocytes into the surrounding granulosa cells through these connections. These connect an oocyte to the surrounding cumulus and granulosa cells by fusing with the cell membranes and forming a large complex during follicle development. Furthermore, we show two characteristics of these connections during follicle development—the localization of growth and differentiation factor-9 within the connections and the dynamics of the connections at ovulation. This article presents for the first time that mammalian oocytes directly connect to granulosa cells by fusing with the cell membrane, similar to that in Drosophila.

Follicle growth in the mammalian ovary is coordinately controlled by multiple factors to sustain periodic ovulation. In this study, we investigated the role of progesterone on follicle growth in the mouse ovary. As the concentration of progesterone changes during the estrus cycle, we cultured the sliced mouse ovary in a medium containing 10 ng/ml, 100 ng/ml, and 1 μg/ml progesterone. Progesterone promoted the growth of primordial to primary follicles at 100 ng/ml, while it suppressed the growth of secondary follicles at 1 μg/ml. Follicles at other developmental stages in the cultured ovary were unaffected with different concentrations of progesterone. The number of ovulated oocytes increased in the medium containing 100 ng/ml progesterone but decreased in the presence of 1 μg/ml progesterone. Follicles expressed two types of progesterone receptors, progesterone receptor (PGR) and PGR membrane component 1 (PGRMC1). While PGR shows transient expression on granulosa cells of Graafian follicles, PGRMC1 expresses in granulosa cells of developing follicles. These results suggest that progesterone controls the growth of developing follicles through PGRMC1. Our study shows that the effect of progesterone on ovulation and follicle growth in mouse ovary is dependent on the concentration of progesterone and the follicle stage.

The number of ovulated oocytes is different among mammals but does not vary much within the same species. In order to sustain periodic ovulation, follicular development must be coordinated at the tissue level. Elucidating the regulatory mechanisms of follicular development is difficult because the ovary has a complicated structure and it takes a long time for primordial follicles to develop into Graafian follicles. Therefore, it is not possible to observe follicular development by conventional experiments. The authors previously developed a new ovarian tissue culture method that enabled the observation of follicular development from the early follicle stage. These findings indicated that follicular interactions are important in regulating follicular development and ovulation. This review describes the current methods of observing follicular development in the ovary and the regulatory mechanisms of follicular development.

ST8 alpha-N-acetyl-neuraminide alpha-2,8-sialyltransferase 2 (ST8SIA2) synthesizes polysialic acid (PSA), which is essential for brain development. Although previous studies reported that St8sia2-deficient mice that have a mixed 129 and C57BL/6 (B6) genetic background showed mild and variable phenotypes, the reasons for this remain unknown. We hypothesized that this phenotypic difference is caused by diversity in the expression or function of flanking genes of St8sia2. A genomic polymorphism and gene expression analysis in the flanking region revealed reduced expression of insulin-like growth factor 1 receptor (Igf1r) on the B6 background than on that of the 129 strain. This observation, along with the finding that administration of an IGF1R agonist during pregnancy increased litter size, suggests that the decreased expression of Igf1r associated with ST8SIA2 deficiency caused lethality. This study demonstrates the importance of gene expression level in the flanking regions of a targeted null allele having an effect on phenotype.

Landau Levels (LLs) of ABA-stacked trilayer graphene (TLG) is highly sensitive to the applied transverse electric field ( $E_{\perp}$ ). The energy shifts of LLs can be probed by studying cyclotron resonance (CR) in graphene. Here we demonstrate electrical gate control of CR signals in TLG using dual-gated TLG device. Tuning $E_{\perp}$ while keeping carrier density $n_{\mathrm{e}}$ constant, we observed that the resonance magnetic field of CR signals in TLG were greatly dependent on $E_{\perp}$ . In addition, the experimental data shows transitions between monolayer graphene (MLG)-like LLs and a bilayer graphene (BLG)-like LLs originate from a mixing of those LLs, which is allowed only in the presence of $E_{\perp}$ . The position and its shift of each transition is well reproduced by numerical calculation using tight-binding model, indicating that our data directly reflects the $E_{\perp}$ tunability of the band structure of TLG. ABA-stacked TLG has a great potential for future application as photovoltaic devices capable of external controlling of wavelength.

We demonstrate the detection of cyclotron resonance in graphene by using a photo-induced thermionic emission mechanism at the graphene/MoS2 van der Waals (vdW) Schottky junction. At cyclotron resonance in Landau-quantized graphene, the infrared light is absorbed and an electron-hole pair is generated. When the energy of a photoexcited electron exceeds the band offset energy at the graphene/MoS2 interface, the electron transfer occurs from graphene to the conduction band of MoS2, and the hole remains in graphene. This creates an electron-hole separation at the graphene/MoS2 interface at cyclotron resonance and a photovoltage is generated. The proposed method is an infrared photodetection technique through out-of-plane transport at the vdW junction, which is distinct from the previously reported methods that use in-plane transport in graphene for electronic detection of the cyclotron resonance. Despite the simple structure of our device with a single-vdW junction, our method exhibits a very high sensitivity of about 10^6 V/W, which shows an improvement of three orders of magnitude over the previously reported values.
