Abstract: International audience; In this paper, we present a fully discrete second-order finite-difference scheme with fast evaluation of the convolution involved in the absorbing boundary conditions to solve the one-dimensional linearized Green-Naghdi system. The Padé expansion of the square-root function in the complex plane is used to implement the fast convolution. By introducing a constant damping parameter into the governing equations, the convergence analysis is developed when the damping term fulfills some conditions. In addition, the scheme is stable and leads to a highly reduced computational cost and low memory storage. A numerical example is provided to support the theoretical analysis and to illustrate the performance of the fast numerical scheme.

Abstract: International audience; The aim of this paper is to construct accurate absorbing boundary conditions (ABCs) for the two-dimensional peridynamics equation of motion which describes nonlocal phenomena arising in continuum mechanics based on integrodifferential equations. To this end, a full discretization of the system is used based on a Crank-Nicolson scheme in time and an asymptotically compatible scheme in space. Recursive relations for the Green's functions are then derived and numerically used to evaluate the nonlocal ABCs. In particular, these absorbing boundary conditions solve the corner reflection problem with high precision. The stability of the complete fully discretized scheme is stated and numerical examples are finally reported to demonstrate the validity of the resulting ABCs.

Abstract: Radical ring-opening copolymerization-induced self-assembly (rROPISA) was performed by copolymerizing benzyl methacrylate and cyclic ketene acetals (CKA), such as 2-methylene-4-phenyl-1,3-dioxolane or 5,6-benzo-2-methylene-1,3-dioxepane, in heptane at 90 °C by reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization from a poly(lauryl methacrylate) macro-RAFT agent. The chain lengths of both the solvophilic macro-RAFT agent and the solvophobic block, together with the initial amount of CKA, were independently varied to achieve various compositions. The amount of CKA in the copolymers ranged from 4 to ∼40 mol % by adjusting the monomer stoichiometry, leading to nearly complete degradation for CKA contents above ∼15 mol %. rROPISA led to stable nanoparticles in all cases, ranging from 40 to 500 nm in diameter, depending on the experimental conditions, as assessed by dynamic light scattering and transmission electron microscopy. Abstract: The construction of exact absorbing boundary conditions (ABCs) for the one-dimensional nonlocal fully-discrete Schrödinger equation is proposed. The computation of the Green's functions for the discrete nonlocal Schrödinger equation is stated and used to build the ABCs. Numerical error estimates are then proved for the case of a singular interaction kernel. The theory and numerical analysis is supported by numerical examples.

Abstract: International audience; A general method is proposed to build exact artificial boundary conditions for the one-dimensional nonlocal Schrödinger equation. To this end, we first consider the spatial semi-discretization of the nonlocal equation, and then develop an accurate numerical method for computing the Green's function of the semi-discrete nonlocal Schrödinger equation. These Green's functions are next used to build the exact boundary conditions corresponding to the semi-discrete model. Numerical results illustrate the accuracy of the boundary conditions. The methodology can also be applied to other nonlocal models and could be extended to higher dimensions.

Abstract: People's subjective response to any thermal environment is commonly investigated by using rating scales describing the degree of thermal sensation, comfort, and acceptability. Subsequent analyses of results collected in this way rely on the assumption that specific distances between verbal anchors placed on the scale exist and that relationships between verbal anchors from different dimensions that are assessed (e.g. thermal sensation and comfort) do not change. Another inherent assumption is that such scales are independent of the context in which they are used (climate zone, season, etc.). Despite their use worldwide, there is indication that contextual differences influence the way the scales are perceived and therefore question the reliability of the scales’ interpretation. To address this issue, a large international collaborative questionnaire study was conducted in 26 countries, using 21 different languages, which led to a dataset of 8225 questionnaires. Results, analysed by means of robust statistical techniques, revealed that only a subset of the responses are in accordance with the mentioned assumptions. Significant differences appeared between groups of participants in their perception of the scales, both in relation to distances of the anchors and relationships between scales. It was also found that respondents’ interpretations of scales changed with contextual factors, such as climate, season, and language. These findings highlight the need to carefully consider context-dependent factors in interpreting and reporting results from thermal comfort studies or post-occupancy evaluations, as well as to revisit the use of rating scales and the analysis methods used in thermal comfort studies to improve their reliability.My individual contribution: Runa T. Abstract: International audience; The aim of this paper is to design some accurate artificial boundary conditions for the semi-discretized linear Schrödinger and heat equations in rectangular domains. The Laplace transform in time and discrete Fourier transform in space are applied to get the Green's functions of the semi-discretized equations in unbounded domains with single-source. An algorithm is given to compute these Green's functions accurately through some recurrence relations. Furthermore, the finite-difference method is used to discretize the reduced problem with accurate boundary conditions. Numerical simulations are presented to illustrate the accuracy of our method in the case of the linear Schrödinger and heat equations. It is shown that the reflection at the corners is correctly eliminated.

Abstract: Functional grading is used to push the load capacity of parts to within the upper bound of what is theoretically possible. Using interpenetrating polymer networks (IPNs), a material system used to achieve grading during printing, the possibility of producing realistic grading of acrylate/epoxy IPNs is studied with the goal of increasing load capacity to within the limit of what is possible, and substantially beyond the load capacity possible with any uniform mixture of this IPN system. In the process, an upper bound of possible improvement is established for a plate with a circular hole in tensions, and the grading for this plate is adjusted to give an optimal load capacity near this upper bound. The optimal grading proposed is different from that shown in previous work due to the simultaneous consideration of both the effect of grading on elastic moduli and on the ultimate stress. A similar study was done for an L-shaped bracket indicating similar improvements over uniform brackets. Abstract: Thermal discomfort is one of the main triggers for occupants’ interactions with components of the built environment such as adjustments of thermostats and/or opening windows and strongly related to the energy use in buildings. Understanding causes for thermal (dis-)comfort is crucial for design and operation of any type of building. The assessment of human thermal perception through rating scales, for example in post-occupancy studies, has been applied for several decades; however, long-existing assumptions related to these rating scales had been questioned by several researchers. The aim of this study was to gain deeper knowledge on contextual influences on the interpretation of thermal perception scales and their verbal anchors by survey participants. A questionnaire was designed and consequently applied in 21 language versions. These surveys were conducted in 57 cities in 30 countries resulting in a dataset containing responses from 8225 participants. Abstract: Modelling and predicting soil reinforcement by roots is a central quest in eco-engineering to assess the effectiveness of vegetation in landslide or erosion mitigation. Several fibre bundle model algorithms (FBMs) have been successfully introduced for soil reinforcement estimation and have achieved satisfactory results. However, FBMs yield variable reinforcement estimates due to their different hypotheses on the progressive root failure mode in soil (e.g., failure driven by load, strength or strain of roots); thus, they lack consensus in mechanism and application. Herein, we proposed three new FBMs, namely, FBMs-W, in which the root failure mode is driven by energy (i.e., work), and compared them with others using ground truth data. These FBMs-W allow, to some extent, reconciliation of the previous assumptions in conflicts because both load and displacement of roots affect in root failure procedures. To measure soil reinforcement, we conducted in situ direct shear tests under both rooted and bare soil conditions and two soil moisture levels using living roots from four common tree or shrubby species (Robinia pseudoacacia L., Pinus tabulaeformis Carr., Syringa oblate Lindl., and Vitex negundo L. var. heterophylla (Franch.) Rehd.) on the Loess Plateau, China. The observed soil reinforcement was then compared with predicted ones using different FBMs for model assessment. All the FBMs overestimated the soil reinforcement compared with the observed values. Among the FBMs, the three FBMs-W showed fairly conservative predictions of root cohesion (cr) that were close to each other. FBMs-W gave the most stable soil reinforcement estimates with the smallest standard deviations. The above results were consistent among the four species. Our findings highlight the high disparities in soil reinforcement estimates and bias from the observed values due to the choice of model algorithms. Due to the conservativeness and stability of the soil reinforcement estimates and good coherence with the observed root failure order, we recommend that FBMs-W should be good candidates to choose by future modellers and practitioners when evaluating the likelihood of the stability of a vegetated slope.

Abstract: International audience; The pre-Cenozoic structural pattern of Asia has had a strong impact on the localization and propagation of the Cenozoic deformation that gave birth to the Tibetan Plateau. Northern Tibet represents a key area to decipher the structural and kinematic links between the Mesozoic and Cenozoic evolution of Tibet. Nonetheless, the Mesozoic tectonic setting of the North Tibet and the role that the Paleozoic inherited Altyn Tagh Fault (ATF) shearing zone played in controlling the regional tectonic pattern during the deposition of the Mesozoic strata remain controversial. This study is based on seismic reflections, isopach maps of the Mesozoic strata in the Qaidam Basin, and provenance analysis using detrital zircon geochronological and heavy mineral contents. Seismic reflections and isopach maps demonstrate that sustained strike-slip motion along the ATF during the Early to Late Jurassic induced transtensional basin formation. Further away from the main ATF (eastern parts of the Qilian Shan and the northern Qaidam Basin), transtension also occurred along major faults, although local transpression developed in relay zones. Rotation in the regional stress field induced compression and basin inversion during the Late Jurassic to Early Cretaceous. The Cenozoic sedimentary rocks in these regions display widespread growth strata and angular unconformities characteristic of compression. This is consistent with topographic changes marked by sediment source variation evidenced by detrital zircon geochronology and heavy mineral analysis. We propose that the mechanism driving the Jurassic extension/transtension in North Tibet could be related to far-field effects of subduction processes along the southern margins of the continent.

Abstract: International audience; A direct numerical simulation (DNS) code is developed to simulate immiscible two-phase flows based on the recently developed discrete unified gas-kinetic scheme (DUGKS). This scheme simulates hydrodynamic equations of the quasi-incompressible Cahn-Hilliard-Navier-Stokes system by the use of two mesoscopic distributions and the proper design of their equilibrium distributions and source terms. Several immiscible two-phase flows are used to validate the scheme in both 2D and 3D, including a stationary droplet in 2D and 3D, the Rayleigh-Taylor flows, and two-phase homogeneous isotropic decaying turbulence. The results obtained by DUGKS are compared carefully to these from the literature and the ARCHER code, i.e., a Coupled Level Set-Volume of Fluid (CLSVOF) method. The comparisons indicate that DUGKS is a promising scheme for direct numerical simulations of immiscible two-phase flows.

Abstract: International audience; The chaos phase modulation sequences consist of complex sequences with a constant envelope, which has recently been used for direct-sequence spread spectrum underwater acoustic communication. It is considered an ideal spreading code for its benefits in terms of large code resource quantity, nice correlation characteristics and high security. However, demodulating this underwater communication signal is a challenging job due to complex underwater environments. This paper addresses this problem as a target classification task and conceives a machine learning-based demodulation scheme. The proposed solution is implemented and optimized on a multi-core center processing unit (CPU) platform, then evaluated with replay simulation datasets. In the experiments, time variation, multi-path effect, propagation loss and random noise were considered as distortions. According to the results, compared to the reference algorithms, our method has greater reliability with better temporal efficiency performance.Keywords

Abstract: International audience; Conventional contact photoplethysmography (PPG) sensors are not suitable in situations of skin damage or when unconstrained movement is required. As a consequence, remote photoplethysmography (rPPG) has recently emerged because it provides remote physiological measurements without expensive hardware and improves comfort for long-term monitoring. RPPG estimation methods use the spatially averaged RGB values of pixels in a Region Of Interest (ROI) to generate a temporal RGB signal. The selection of ROI is a critical first step to obtain reliable pulse signals and must contain as many skin pixels as possible with a low percentage of non-skin pixels. In this paper, we experimentally compare seven ROI segmentation methods in the perspective of heart rate (HR) measurements with dedicated metrics. The algorithms are compared using our in-house database UBFC-RPPG, comprising of 53 videos specifically geared towards rPPG analysis.

Abstract: International audience; Material equation-of-state (EOS) models, generally providing the pressure and internal energy for a given density and temperature, are required to close the equations of hydrodynamics. As a result they are an essential piece of physics used to simulate inertial confinement fusion (ICF) implosions. Historically, EOS models based on different physical/chemical pictures of matter have been developed for ICF relevant materials such as the deuterium (D2) or deuterium-tritium (DT) fuel, as well as candidate ablator materials such as polystyrene (CH), glow-discharge polymer (GDP), beryllium (Be), carbon (C), and boron carbide (B4C). The accuracy of these EOS models can directly affect the reliability of ICF target design and understanding, as shock timing and material compressibility are essentially determined by what EOS models are used in ICF simulations. Systematic comparisons of current EOS models, benchmarking with experiments, not only help us to understand what the model differences are and why they occur, but also to identify the state-of-the-art EOS models for ICF target designers to use. For this purpose, the first Equation-of-State Workshop, supported by the US Department of Energy’s ICF program, was held at the Laboratory for Laser Energetics (LLE), University of Rochester on 31 May - 2nd June, 2017. This paper presents a detailed review on the findings from this workshop: (1) 5-10% model-model variations exist throughout the relevant parameter space, and can be much larger in regions where ionization and dissociation are occurring, (2) the D2 EOS is particularly uncertain, with no single model able to match the available experimental data, and this drives similar uncertainties in the CH EOS, and (3) new experimental capabilities such as Hugoniot measurements around 100 Mbar and high-quality temperature measurements are essential to reducing EOS uncertainty.

Abstract: International audience; Multispectral image modalities can offer high accuracy performance to the biometric systems by improving the discrimination along the spectral dimension. However, its adoptions are usually challenged by low signal to noise ratio, inter band misalignment, high data volume and computational efficiency. This paper presents a fast multispectral palmprint biometric technique using partial least square regression model and score-level fusion, with which an embedded recognition and verification system is implemented for evaluation. Our experiments are conducted using the PolyU palmprint database, and the results demonstrate that the proposed method can achieve a higher accuracy and a lower running cost compared to the reference implementations dedicated to the real-time and/or embedded applications. Abstract: Strong static magnetic field (SSMF) is a unique way to regulate the microstructure and improve the properties of materials. FeCoNi(AlSi)0.2 alloy is a novel class of soft magnetic materials (SMMs) designed based on high-entropy alloy (HEA) concepts. In this study, a strong static magnetic field is introduced to tune the microstructure, mechanical, electrical and magnetic properties of FeCoNi(AlSi)0.2 high-entropy alloy. Results indicate that, with the increasing magnetic field intensity, the Vickers hardness and the saturation magnetization (Ms) increase firstly, and then decrease and reach the maximum at 5T, while the yield strength, the residual magnetization (Mr) and the coercivity (Hc) take the opposite trend. The resistivity values (ρ) are found to be enhanced by the increasing magnetic field intensity. The main reasons for the magnetic field on the above effects are interpreted by microstructure evolution (phase species and volume fraction), atomic-level structure and defects (vacancy and dislocation density).

Abstract: Locality 1, in the Lower Cave of the Zhoukoudian cave complex, China, is one of the most important Middle Pleistocene paleoanthropological and archaeological sites worldwide, with the remains of c. 45 Homo erectus individuals, 98 mammalian taxa, and thousands of lithic tools recovered. Most of the material collected before World War II was lost. However, besides two postcranial elements rediscovered in China in 1951, four human permanent teeth from the ‘Dragon Bone Hill,’ collected by O. Zdansky between 1921 and 1923, were at the time brought to the Paleontological Institute of Uppsala University, Sweden, where they are still stored. This small sample consists of an upper canine (PMU 25719), an upper third molar (PMU M3550), a lower third premolar crown (PMU M3549), and a lower fourth premolar (PMU M3887). Some researchers have noted the existence of morpho-dimensional differences between the Zhoukoudian and the H. erectus dental assemblage from Sangiran, Java. However, compared to its chrono-geographical distribution, the Early to Middle Pleistocene dental material currently forming the Chinese-Indonesian H. erectus hypodigm is quantitatively meager and still poorly characterized for the extent of its endostructural variation. We used micro-focus X-ray tomography techniques of virtual imaging coupled with geometric morphometrics for comparatively investigating the endostructural conformation (tissue proportions, enamel thickness distribution, enamel-dentine junction morphology, pulp cavity shape) of the four specimens stored in Uppsala, all previously reported for their outer features. The results suggest the existence of time-related differences between continental and insular Southeast Asian dental assemblages, the Middle Pleistocene Chinese teeth apparently retaining an inner signature closer to the likely primitive condition represented by the Early Pleistocene remains from Java, while the Indonesian stock evolved toward tooth structural simplification.

Abstract: International audience; This paper proposes a quadratic programming (QP)-based method for identification of finite impulse response (FIR) dynamic systems from quantized or binary data. The main idea of the proposed method is to reformulate this identification problem, usually viewed as a nonlinear estimation problem with discontinuous nonlinearities, in the form of a standard QP problem, which is a convex optimization problem and can be solved efficiently. The so-called complete input conditions to ensure the unique solution of the QP problem are developed, and the consistency of the estimated parameters is established under the complete input conditions. Numerical examples demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Abstract: International audience; The authors regret a mistake on the value of δ13C of methane for one of the investigated gas samples. This concerns sample MRS-DV3-PE03, taken as end member and for which the correct methane δ13C value is -41.9‰ and not -34‰. The sample was collected at in situ pressure ( 100 bars) from a CO2-rich seep, in a liquid state. The mistake likely results from a partial extraction (i.e. done by expansion of the sampler volume to allow vaporization) of the pressurized sample for subsampling. Additional analyses have been carried out from fully vaporized samples. This error has resulted in updating the geochemical diagrams used for the discussion, and revising both the gas origin for sample MRS-DV3-PE03 and the section entitled "Delineation of sources, reservoirs or migration pathways, and estimation of level of mixing". The conclusion of the manuscript is unchanged. The authors would like to apologize for any inconvenience caused.

Abstract: International audience; Several design parameters of flail chopper were studied under a wide range of field and crop conditions to improve chopper performance. However, the effects of parameters on the internal straw flow characteristics that influence straw chopping and spreading performance are still unknown. In this paper, Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) were used to analyze the influence of three operating parameters (rotor speed, forward speed and hood clearance) and two structural parameters (fan blade number and flail tip clearance) on the flow characteristic in the tractor powered flail chopper. The pressure contours, maximum negative pressure and flow rate at the machine inlet were considered in the analysis of feeding performance. Velocity at 21 sampling points, area weighted and maximum velocities at the outlet were also considered for straw spreading performance. Streamlines from three sampling sections were analyzed for straw flow-ability.

In conventional detection systems, hand-craaed acoustic features are usually fed into a discriminative classiier (e. g., Support Vector Machines); however it is well known that the accuracy and robustness of such a system is limited by the size of the associated training data. is paper explores, for the rst time, the use of feature representations learnt using a deep Genera-tive Adversarial Network (GAN) for classifying children's speech aaected by developmental disorders. A comparative evaluation of our proposed system with diierent acoustic feature sets is performed on the Child Pathological and Emotional Speech database. Key experimental results presented demonstrate that GAN based methods exhibit competitive performance with the conventional paradigms in terms of the unweighted average recall metric.

Abstract: International audience; In this paper, eggplant young seedlings infected by root knot nematodes were identified using near infrared spectroscopy. The main research on MSC and SG pretreatment method and PCA principal component extraction method with the combination of effects on model for classification. Results show: The best classification process is to do the first MSC after SG smoothing pretreatment, after using PCA extracted as the main component of the SIMCA input variables for classification, and achieved a classification average accuracy higher than 90%. It is an effective method to classify the degree of infection of the root knot nematodes by using the visible and near infrared spectral characteristics of the eggplant leaves.

Abstract: International audience; The newly introduced Kubelka-Munk Genetic Algorithm (KMGA) is a promising technique for the assessment of skin lesions from multi-spectral images. Using five skin parameter maps such as concentration or epidermis/dermis thickness, this method combines the Kubelka-Munk Light-Tissue interaction model and Genetic Algorithm optimization process to produce a quantitative measure of cutaneous tissue. Up to the present, variant improved KMGA implementations have been successfully realized using the recent parallel computing techniques. However, all these achievements are based on the multi-core CPUs. This results in a quite high cost and low practicability for the hardware equipment of the clinical system. Fortunately, Embedded Systems (ES) applications have made great progress in recent years, and many highly effective image processing devices, such as DSPs (Digital Signal Processor) and FPGAs (Field Programmable Gate Array), have been made available to engineers at a very convenient price. Nevertheless, today's embedded devices have as well the advantages of high speed, high embedability, low power consumption, more flexibility, etc. Thus, we focus our researches on the embedded KMGA application development. In this paper, we realize the CPU-to-FPGA transplantation of KMGA within a special High-Level Synthesis (HLS) SW/HW Co-design framework. Moreover, several optimizations are made on the algorithm and source code to improve the performances of the final implementation. Compared with CPUs, intensive experiments demonstrate that the proposed approaches can effectively improve the performances of KMGA method both in terms of efficiency and accuracy. Abstract: International audience; The study in this paper is motivated by the modeling of control valves with significant stiction. By assuming linear dynamics of the controlled process, the joint characterization of the control valve and of the controlled process is formulated as the identification of an extended Hammerstein system. A point-slope-based hysteresis model is used to describe the input hysteresis nonlinearity of the control valve. An iterative algorithm is proposed to solve the identification problem. The basic idea is to separate the ascent and descent paths of the input hysteresis nonlinearity subject to oscillatory excitations. Some identifiability analysis is performed: the proposed extended Hammerstein model structure is identifiable, and given the true input nonlinearity, the oscillatory signals in feedback control loops are shown to be informative by exploiting the cyclo-stationarity of these oscillatory signals. Industrial examples are provided to verify the effectiveness of the proposed identification algorithm in characterizing complicated characteristics of control valve stiction in practice.

A numerical algorithm is proposed in this paper, in which the impulsive differential equation is discretized with respect to the primary impulse corresponding to the contact with the highest potential energy, and the integration step size is estimated at the momentum level. This algorithm respects the energetic constraints and avoids the stiff ordinary differential equation problem arising by directly using the compliant model. Abstract: In energy harvesters using arrays of nanowires (NWs), a larger density of NWs should imply higher performance, but in reality the efficiency of the cells is always deteriorated due to NW collision. Impeding the formation of NW clusters in highly populated arrays is essential to ensure effective NW movement and provide a high surface area. Here we present a cost-effective methodology to avoid NW clustering in highly populated arrays of nanowires. First, a flexible polymer is intercalated between the NWs by spin coating, and then its height is tuned by controlled oxygen plasma etching. The resulting optimized energy harvesters show an enhancement in the piezoelectric effect by a factor of 80, as well as a notable improvement in the photoelectric response. The relationship between the height of the intercalated polymer and the piezo potential produced by the nanowires is simulated by the finite element method calculations, which support the experimental observations.

Abstract: Low-melting point metals such as bismuth (Bi) and tin (Sn) are ideal choices for mediating a low temperature growth of silicon nanowires (SiNWs) for radial junction thin film solar cells. The incorporation of Bi catalyst atoms leads to sufficient n-type doping in the SiNWs core that exempts the use of hazardous dopant gases, while an easy morphology control with pure Bi catalyst has never been demonstrated so far. We here propose a Bi-Sn alloy catalyst strategy to achieve both a beneficial catalyst-doping and an ideal SiNW morphology control. In addition to a potential of further growth temperature reduction, we show that the alloy catalyst can remain quite stable during a vapor-liquid-solid growth, while providing still sufficient n-type catalyst-doping to the SiNWs. Radial junction solar cells constructed over the alloy-catalyzed SiNWs have demonstrated a strongly enhanced photocurrent generation, thanks to optimized nanowire morphology, and largely improved performance compared to the reference samples based on the pure Bi or Sn-catalyzed SiNWs.

Abstract: Silicon (Si)-based light emitting thin film has been a key ingredient for all-Si-based optoelectronics. Besides material engineering, adopting a novel 3D photonic architecture represents an effective strategy to boost light excitation and extraction from Si-based thin film material. We here explore the use of a nanowires (NW) framework, grown via vapor-liquid-solid mode, to achieve strongly enhanced yellow-green luminescence from SiN(x)O(y)/NW core-shell structure, with an order of magnitude enhancement compared to co-deposited planar references. We found that choosing geometrically-identical but different NW cores (Si or SiO(2)) can lead to profound influence on the overall light emission performance. Combining parametric investigation and theoretical modeling, we have been able to evaluate the key contributions arising from different mechanisms that include near-field enhancement, 3D light trapping and enhanced light extraction. These new findings indicate a new and effective strategy for strong Si-based thin film light emitting source, while being generic enough to be applicable in a wide variety of other thin film materials.

Abstract: International audience; This paper introduces Preisach model to describe hysteretic input nonlinearities of extended Hammerstein systems. Preisach model is proved to be an effective model to cover most of hysteretic input nonlinearities studied in the existing literatures on identification of extended Hammerstein systems. That is, Preisach model encloses the backlash-type nonlinearities and the hysteresis-relay nonlinearities as special cases, but excludes the switch-type nonlinearities. Hence, the usage of Preisach model is able to resolve an issue that types of hysteretic input nonlinearities are often inaccessible in practice, but most of existing identification methods have to know the type of input hysteretic nonlinearity a priori. For identification of extended Hammerstein systems with input nonlinearity described by Presiach model, the persistently exciting (PE) condition of input is established and the consistency of estimated model parameters is proved. In particular, the requirement on inputs to meet with the PE condition covers a wide class of signals, which resolves another issue in the existing studies that specially designed inputs are usually required. Numerical and industrial examples are provided to illustrate the obtained results.

Abstract: International audience; In this paper, continuum multiscale models are proposed to describe the size-dependent mechanical properties of two kinds of heterogeneous nanostructures: radially-heterogeneous nanowires and longitudinally-heterogeneous nanolaminates. In both cases, the continuum models involve additional surface/interface energies which allow capturing size effects. Several models of imperfect interface models, like coherent and spring-layer ones, are shown to respectively capture the size effects which are reported by first-principle calculations performed on heterogeneous nanostructures. In each case, a procedure is proposed to identify the parameters of the surface/interface model in the continuum framework, based on first-principles calculations performed on slab systems. The obtained continuum models allow avoiding full computations on atomistic models which are not affordable for large sizes (diameters, layer thickness). An increase of the overall stiffness for both kinds of heterogeneous AlN/GaNnanostructures with the decrease of the dimensions is evidenced. The continuum models are then compared with full first principles calculations to demonstrate their accuracy and their ability to capture size effects.

Abstract: This paper quantifies the interplay between the non-arbitrage notion of No-Unbounded-Profit-with-Bounded-Risk (NUPBR hereafter) and additional information generated by a random time. This study complements the one of Aksamit/Choulli/Deng/Jeanblanc [1] in which the authors studied similar topics for the case of stopping at the random time instead, while herein we are concerned with the part after the occurrence of the random time. Given that all the literature -up to our knowledge- proves that the NUPBR notion is always violated after honest times that avoid stopping times in a continuous filtration, herein we propose a new class of honest times for which the NUPBR notion can be preserved for some models. For this family of honest times, we elaborate two principal results. The first main result characterizes the pairs of initial market and honest time for which the resulting model preserves the NUPBR property, while the second main result characterizes the honest times that preserve the NUPBR property for any quasi-left continuous model. Abstract: International audience; The study in this paper is motivated by the detection of control valves with asymmetric stiction resulting in oscillations in feedback control loops. The joint characterization of the control valve and the controlled process is formulated as the identification of a class of extended Hammerstein systems. The input nonlinearity is described by a point-slope-based hysteretic model with two possibly asymmetric ascent and descent paths. An iterative identification method is proposed, based on the idea of separating the ascent and descent paths subject to the oscillatory input and output. The structure of the formulated extended Hammerstein system is shown to be identifiable, and the oscillatory signals in feedback control loops are proved to be informative by exploiting the cyclo-stationarity of these oscillatory signals. Numerical, experimental and industrial examples are provided to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed identification method.

Abstract: International audience; The atypical cadherins Fat (Ft) and Dachsous (Ds) control tissue growth through the Salvador–Warts–Hippo (SWH) pathway, and also regulate planar cell polarity and morphogenesis. Ft and Ds engage in reciprocal signalling as both proteins can serve as receptor and ligand for each other. The intracellular domains (ICDs) of Ft and Ds regulate the activity of the key SWH pathway transcriptional co-activator protein Yorkie (Yki). Signalling from the FtICD is well characterized and controls tissue growth by regulating the abundance of the Yki-repressive kinase Warts (Wts). Here we identify two regulators of the Drosophila melanogaster SWH pathway that function downstream of the DsICD: the WD40 repeat protein Riquiqui (Riq) and the DYRK-family kinase Minibrain (Mnb). Ds physically interacts with Riq, which binds to both Mnb and Wts. Riq and Mnb promote Yki-dependent tissue growth by stimulating phosphorylation-dependent inhibition of Wts. Thus, we describe a previously unknown branch of the SWH pathway that controls tissue growth downstream of Ds.

An extended Hammerstein system with discretized Preisach model as the input nonlinearity is proposed to capture hysteretic dynamic behaviors of cascading systems consisting of control valves followed by linear dynamic subsystems. An iterative method is p- resented to identify the extended Hammerstein systems. An informative input needs to have multiple local extreme values in order to ensure the discretized Preisach model identifiable. However, if only a single hysteresis loop of the discretized Preisach model is in active, then an oscillatory input with only two extreme values is shown to be persistently excited for identification. Hence, the proposed identification method for extended Hammerstein systems is applicable to general types of input- s as well as oscillatory ones. Two industrial examples are provided to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed identification method for extended Hammerstein systems.

For this non-arbitrage notion, we obtain two principal results. The first result lies in describing the pairs of market model and random time for which the resulting stopped model fulfills NUPBR condition. The second main result characterises the random time models that preserve the NUPBR property after stopping for any market model. These results are elaborated in a very general market model, and we also pay attention to some particular and practical models. The analysis that drives these results is based on new stochastic developments in semimartingale theory with progressive enlargement. We analyse the effects of the rank constraint on the three steps of a unifying framework for SIMs: the rank constraint has no effect on the first two steps, but does so on the third step. If the rank constraint is ignored, as in the existing over-parametrised method (OPM) for Hammerstein system identification, the optimality of the resulting estimate can still be established. Even so, the OPM may suffer from the dimension problem resulting in a low numerical efficiency. To resolve the dimension problem, we propose a new subspace-based method, named as the least-parametrised method (LPM), for identification of Hammerstein systems with non-coupling input nonlinearities. Simulation results are provided to demonstrate the effectiveness of the LPM, and show the necessity of considering the rank constraint to improve the numerical efficiency.

47. Planar dynamics of a rigid body system with frictional impacts. II Qualitative analysis and numerical simulations

Abstract: The objective of this paper is to implement and test the theory presented in a companion paper for the non-smooth dynamics exhibited in a bouncing dimer. Our approach revolves around the use of rigid body dynamics theory combined with constraint equations from the Coulomb's frictional law and the complementarity condition to identify the contact status of each contacting point. A set of impulsive differential equations based on Darboux–Keller shock dynamics is established that can deal with the complex behaviours involved in multiple collisions, such as the frictional effects, the local dissipation of energy at each contact point, and the dispersion of energy among various contact points. The paper will revisit the experimental phenomena found in Dorbolo et al . ( Dorbolo et al . 2005 Phys. Rev. Lett. 95 , 044101), and then present a qualitative analysis based on the theory proposed in part I. The value of the static coefficient of friction between the plate and the dimer is successfully estimated, and found to be responsible for the formation of the drift motion of the bouncing dimer. Plenty of numerical simulations are carried out, and precise agreements are obtained by the comparisons with the experimental results.

48. Dual cross-linked magnetic gelatin/carboxymethyl cellulose cryogels for enhanced Congo red adsorption: Experimental studies and machine learning modelling.

Abstract: To achieve highly efficient and environmentally degradable adsorbents for Congo red (CR) removal, we synthesized a dual-network nanocomposite cryogel composed of gelatin/carboxymethyl cellulose, loaded with Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles. Gelatin and sodium carboxymethylcellulose were cross-linked using transglutaminase and calcium chloride, respectively. The cross-linking process enhanced the thermal stability of the composite cryogels. The CR adsorption process exhibited a better fit to the pseudo-second-order model and Langmuir model, with maximum adsorption capacity of 698.19 mg/g at pH of 7, temperature of 318 K, and initial CR concentration of 500 mg/L. Thermodynamic results indicated that the CR adsorption process was both spontaneous and endothermic. The performance of machine learning model showed that the Extreme Gradient Boosting model had the highest test determination coefficient (R 2 = 0.9862) and the lowest root mean square error (RMSE = 10.3901 mg/g) among the 6 models. Feature importance analysis using SHapley Additive exPlanations (SHAP) revealed that the initial concentration had the greatest influence on the model's prediction of adsorption capacity. Density functional theory calculations indicated that there were active sites on the CR molecule that can undergo electrostatic interactions with the adsorbent. 49. From micropores to mechanical strength: Fabrication and characterization of edible corn starch-sodium alginate double network hydrogels with Ca2+ cross-linking.

Abstract: This study explores the fabrication and characterization of corn starch‑sodium alginate double network hydrogels using two distinct calcium ion cross-linking methods: the gluconolactone immersed method (GIM) and the calcium chloride immersed method (CCIM). We investigated the ionic cross-linking mechanism of these hydrogels and compared their microstructure and mechanical properties. Our results highlight significant differences between GIM and CCIM hydrogels, with the CCIM method producing a more uniform and compact network. At the same calcium ion concentration, CCIM hydrogel exhibited higher mechanical strength and viscoelasticity properties compared to GIM hydrogel. The rapid release of Ca 2+ in CCIM allowed for complete cross-linking with sodium alginate, forming a uniform 3D network structure. In contrast, the slow released Ca 2+ in GIM resulted in a heterogeneous structure with a tough outer shell and incomplete internal cross-linking. Specifically, the CCIM hydrogel showed a compact network structure and the highest mechanical strength at a calcium chloride concentration of 1.6% (w/v). This study demonstrates that the Ca 2+ release rate significantly impacts the microstructure and mechanical properties of double network hydrogels prepared by the immersion method. 50. Effect of microwave-assisted hot air drying on drying kinetics, water migration, dielectric properties, and microstructure of corn.

Abstract: This study investigates the effectiveness of microwave-assisted hot air drying (MAHD) on corn drying process, water migration, dielectric properties, microstructure, and quality attributes. The research compares MAHD with conventional hot air drying (HAD), employing various microwave powers (1.2-3.6 kW) and hot air temperatures (35-55 °C). The results demonstrate that MAHD significantly reduces the drying time (by 30.95-64.29%) compared to HAD. Two-term model accurately describes the drying kinetics of corn. Microwave facilitated the transformation and more uniform distribution of water within the corn, observed through LF-NMR/MRI. Additionally, MAHD was effective in preserving the color and carotenoids, while reducing fat acidity, indicating better quality retention. Microstructure analysis revealed that MAHD increases microporosity and cracks in corn, which correlates with the observed enhancement in drying efficiency.
