À Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia pelo financiamento concedido através do projeto de investigação NEURONS4 (2022.09196.PTDC) e dos projetos de cooperação bilateral em conjunto com a CAPES (Brasil) e PNAAE (Polónia) designados por MArTics (FCT/DRI/CAPES 2019.00277.CBM) e NEURONS ((FCT/DRI/PNAAE 2021.09608.CBM), respetivamente. Atualmente, o cancro representa uma das grandes ameaças para a saúde humana, sendo classificada como a segunda causa de morte a nível mundial, pelo que é necessário encontrar e desenvolver alternativas inovadoras para os regimes terapêuticos atualmente utilizados. Os efeitos secundários assim como a resistência evidenciada por alguns tipos de cancro às terapêuticas atuais, têm conduzido a uma procura crescente por soluções inovadoras. Nesta perspetiva, o ambiente marinho tem-se revelado uma fonte de novas moléculas, com estruturas químicas e mecanismos de ação inovadores. Assim, a presente dissertação teve como principal objetivo avaliar a atividade citotóxica do diterpeno eleganolone isolado da macroalga castanha Bifurcaria bifurcata, em diferentes linha celulares de origem maligna, entre eles o melanoma (SK-MEL-28), carcinoma da próstata (DU-145) e adenocarcinoma da mama (MCF-7). O eleganolone foi isolado com recurso a meios cromatográficos (cromatografia líquida de alta eficiência) e a sua identificação foi realizada pela técnica de ressonância magnética nuclear de protão. A citotoxicidade do composto (1 – 100 μM; 24 h) foi avaliada através dos métodos de MTT e da Calceína-AM e pela quantificação da enzima lactato desidrogenase (LDH). De forma a entender as vias de sinalização inerentes à citotoxicidade verificada, vários biomarcadores celulares foram estudados, nomeadamente a quantificação de espécies reativas de oxigénio (ERO) (10 – 100 μM; 6, 12 e 24 h), alterações do potencial da membrana mitocondrial (10 – 100 μM; 6, 12 e 24 h), a atividade da Caspase-9 (10 – 100 μM; 12 e 24 h) e as alterações morfológicas do ADN (10 – 100 μM; 12, 24, 48 e 72 h). A partir de uma fração do extrato de diclorometano da macroalga B. bifurcata, foi possível isolar o eleganolone. Para verificar a existência de seletividade por parte do composto foi avaliado o valor de IC50 relativo a cada linha celular, sendo estas expostas a cinco concentrações de eleganolone (1 – 100 μM), durante 24 horas. Os valores apresentados variaram entre 20,65 μM e >100 μM, sendo o menor valor registado na linha celular MCF-7 (20,65 μM), seguida da linha celular SK-MEL-28 (90,82 μM) e da linha celular DU-145 (>100 μM). O tratamento com eleganolone resultou num aumento do nível de espécies reativas de oxigénio, induziu mudanças no potencial de membrana da mitocôndria, aumentou a atividade da Caspase-9 e promoveu a condensação e/ou fragmentação do ADN. viii Em suma, o eleganolone apresenta atividade citotóxica contra as células do cancro da mama (MCF-7) e do melanoma (SK-MEL-28), e o seu efeito pode estar associado a estimulação de uma situação de stress oxidativo e consequente morte celular por apoptose. Apesar dos resultados aqui apresentados serem um forte indicativo do envolvimento destas vias de sinalização intracelulares, trata-se apenas de uma investigação inicial, pelo que são necessários mais estudos para confirmar o seu potencial terapêutico na área do cancro.

As macroalgas são organismos fotossintéticos, muito diversificados. A espécie Gracilaria gracilis, bem como o Codium tomentosum, são comestíveis e apresentam compostos bioativos de elevado interesse, com diversas aplicações em diferentes áreas (alimentar, cosmética, entre outras). Embora não sejam atualmente utilizadas de forma ampla na agricultura, as macroalgas são usadas há já muito anos como bioestimulantes de plantas. Recentemente, ressurgiu um novo interesse nas aplicações agrícolas das macroalgas, relacionado com a procura crescente de produtos que não prejudicam o ambiente e que tornam a produção vegetal mais rentável e sustentável. As macroalgas apresentam na sua constituição, polissacarídeos e hormonas vegetais, (tais como as auxinas, as citocininas, o etileno, as giberelinas e o ácido abscísico), substâncias conhecidas por desempenharem um papel relevante no desenvolvimento e fisiologia das plantas. São também ricas em proteínas, fibras, vitaminas e minerais. O principal objetivo deste trabalho foi a determinação do potencial bioestimulante de extratos de macroalgas, com especial ênfase no seu efeito sobre a germinação e o crescimento de plantas. Adicionalmente, foi testado o potencial aumento da resistência ao stress térmico e ao stress salino. O efeito bioestimulante foi testado em duas espécies agrícolas: alface (Lactuca sativa L.) e tomate (Solanum lycopersicum L.). Foi possível concluir que, na maioria dos ensaios, as sementes expostas aos extratos de macroalgas das espécies testadas (Gracilaria gracilis ou Codium tomentosum) apresentam uma germinação mais acelerada do que o controlo, traduzida por uma percentagem de germinação mais elevada, em cada dia, apresentando, ainda, um desenvolvimento superior das radículas e dos hipocótilos N, bem como uma percentagem de humidade mais elevada. Foi, ainda, possível constatar que as sementes expostas aos extratos de Gracilaria gracilis e de Codium tomentosum apresentam uma maior resistência ao stress salino e ao stress térmico. Macroalgae are widely known for being photosynthetic organisms. The species Gracilaria gracilis, as well as Codium tomentosum, are edible and present bioactive compounds of great interest, with various applications in different areas (food, cosmetics, among others). Although they are not currently widely used in agriculture, macroalgae have been used for many years as plant biostimulants. Recently, a new interest in the agricultural application of these macroalgae has emerged, related to the growing demand for products that do not harm the environment and that make plant production more profitable and sustainable. Macroalgae have in their constitution polysaccharides and plant hormones (such as auxins, cytokinin’s, ethylene, gibberellins, and abscisic acid), substances known to play a relevant role in plant development and physiology. They are also rich in protein, fiber, vitamins, and minerals. The main objective of this work was to determine the biostimulant potential of macroalgae extracts, with special emphasis on their effect on germination and plant growth. Additionally, the potential increase in resistance to heat and salt stress was tested. The biostimulant effect was tested on two agricultural species: lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) and tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.). It was possible to conclude that, in most trials, seeds exposed to macroalgae extracts of the species tested (Gracilaria gracilis or Codium tomentosum) show faster germination than the control, as well as a higher hypocotyl and root development and a higher moisture percentage. It was also possible to verify that the seeds exposed to extracts of Gracilaria gracilis or Codium tomentosum showed greater resistance to salt and heat stress.

O ambiente marinho apresenta uma grande diversidade de organismos e condições abióticas. Dentro dos organismos marinhos com maior distribuição e diversidade, encontram-se as algas. Estas apresentam diversas características que as tornam interessantes do ponto de vista económico, sendo tradicionalmente utilizadas como alimento, incorporadas em ração para animais e fertilizante. Estes usos tradicionais despertaram o interesse da comunidade científica que, cada vez mais se dedica ao estudo destes organismos. Dentro das algas, as algas vermelhas (Rhodophyta) apresentam um grande número de espécies e estão presentes em diversos tipos de ecossistemas sobretudo marinhos, sendo conhecidas por produzirem ficobiliproteínas responsáveis pela sua cor avermelhada. Dentro das Rhodophyta, o Sphaerococcus coronopifolius (ordem Gigartinales) e a Jania rubens (ordem Corallinales) são duas algas muito abundantes na costa portuguesa, cujo conhecimento é, ainda, relativamente limitado. Quanto à caracterização do seu perfil nutricional, o S. coronopifolius apresentou maior teor de humidade, proteína, matéria gorda e hidratos de carbono, e a J. rubens apresentou o maior conteúdo de cinzas, 79,79% peso seco (DW), em parte devido ao seu revestimento calcário. Neste campo é de destacar o baixo conteúdo em matéria gorda apresentado pelas duas espécies, assim como o elevado conteúdo em hidratos de carbono, 40,23 % DW do Sphaerococcus coronopifolius. Relativamente aos pigmentos, o S. coronopifolius, em geral, apresentou maior conteúdo em ficobilinas, sendo o melhor processo/solvente de extração variável consoante a espécie. Já no caso da clorofila a e dos carotenoides, o destaque positivo vai para a Jania rubens. Ambas as espécies apresentam diferentes rendimentos de extração para cada solvente, sendo que a extração aquosa apresentou o maior rendimento nos dois casos. Ao analisar as bioatividades dos extratos aquosos verificou-se um maior potencial de redução do radical DPPH pelo extrato de S. coronopifolius, contudo, o grande destaque vai para a Jania rubens com 99,65 % de inibição do radical ABTS. Já nos polifenóis totais, o estrato aquoso do S. coronopifolius apresentou maior quantidade (0,67 mg GAE.g−1). Foi detetado potencial antimicrobiano contra B. subtilis, no entanto, não houve atividade contra E. coli nem S. cerevisiae, para nenhuma das duas espécies. Os resultados conseguidos neste trabalho permitem melhorar o conhecimento destas espécies que ainda é escasso, especialmente quanto ao perfil nutricional. Pode ainda despertar o interesse de estudos mais aprofundados, e interesse industrial na aplicação destas espécies na área alimentar e farmacêutica. The marine environment presents a great diversity of organisms and abiotic conditions. Within the marine organisms with greater distribution and diversity are algae. These have several characteristics that make them interesting from the economic point of view, being traditionally used as food, incorporated into animal feed, and fertilizer. These traditional uses have aroused the interest of the scientific community, which is increasingly dedicated itself to the study of these organisms. Among the algae, the red seaweed (Rhodophyta) have a large number of species and are present in various types of ecosystems, being known for producing phycobiliproteins responsible for their reddish color. Within the Rhodophyta, Sphaerococcus coronopifolius (order Gigartinales) and Jania rubens (order Corallinales) are algae two very abundant on the Portuguese coast, whose knowledge is still relatively limited. As for the characterization of their nutritional profile, S. coronopifolius showed the highest content of moisture, protein, fat, and carbohydrates, and J. rubens showed the highest ash content, 79.79% DW, partly due to its calcareous coating. In this field, the low-fat content presented by the two species, as well as the high carbohydrate content, 40.23% DW of Sphaerococcus coronopifolius, should be highlighted. In terms of pigments, S. coronopifolius generally had a higher content in phycobilin, and it was not possible to identify the best solvent for both species. In the case of chlorophyll a and carotenoids, the positive highlight goes to Jania rubens. Both species present different extraction yields for each solvent, with the aqueous extraction presenting the highest yields in both cases. When analyzing the bioactivities of the aqueous extracts, it was verified a higher potential of the reduction of the DPPH radical, by the extract of S. coronopifolius, however, the great highlight goes to Jania rubens with 99.65% of inhibition of the ABTS radical. As for total phenols, the aqueous extract of S. coronopifolius showed the highest amount (0,67 mg GAE.g−1). Antimicrobial potential was detected against B. subtilis, however, there was no activity against E. coli and S. cerevisiae, for both species. The results obtained in this work allow us to improve the knowledge of these species, which is still scarce, especially regarding their nutritional profile. It may also awaken the interest of further studies, and industrial interest in the application of these species in the food and pharmaceutical areas.

As ataxias espinocerebelosas (SCAs) de poliglutamina são causadas por uma expansão de uma repetição CAG no respectivo gene e, a nível mundial, são consideradas doenças raras. A SCA3, ou doença de Machado-Joseph (MJD) é a SCA mais prevalente sendo de 1/2544 (ou 39/100 000) no Arquipélago dos Açores. O sintoma inicial mais reportado é a ataxia da marcha, que, em média, aparece na meia-idade. Atualmente, as escalas clínicas, que podem ser qualitativas/semi-quantitativas, são as medidas mais utilizadas para avaliar a progressão/severidade da doença; no entanto, estes biomarcadores convencionais apresentam várias limitações. Os testes funcionais, utilizados individualmente ou em conjunto, são instrumentos quantitativos e como tal podem ser mais informativos do que as escalas clínicas. Os mais utilizados são o Click teste (CLK-T) e o Nine Hole Pegboard teste (9HPB-T), que foram desenvolvidos para quantificar a coordenação dos membros superiores. Além disso, a sua utilidade nas SCAs, incluindo a DMJ, já foi demonstrada. No entanto, tanto as escalas de avaliação como os testes funcionais são de natureza episódica e são realizados num ambiente supervisionado. Assim, as identificações de biomarcadores digitais podem ser consideradas uma solução para as limitações das medidas em uso, uma vez que podem permitir a avaliação destas doenças durante a rotina diária dos doentes (em casa, sem supervisão). De forma a identificar um novo biomarcador digital capaz de quantificar objetivamente a severidade e progressão das SCAs, neste trabalho, foi desenvolvido um aplicativo para smartphone para avaliar a coordenação dos membros superiores tendo em consideração os dois testes funcionais: CLK-T e 9HPB-T. [...]. ABSTRACT: Spinocerebellar polyglutamine ataxias (SCAs) are caused by an expansion of a glutamineencoding CAG repeat in the respective gene and, worldwide, are rare disorders. SCA3, or Machado-Joseph disease (MJD) is the most prevalent SCA worldwide being of 1/2544 (or 39/100 000) in the Azores Archipelago. Usually, the initial observed complaint is gait ataxia, which appears around middle age. Currently, qualitative/semi-quantitative rating scales, are the most widely used outcome measures; however, such conventional biomarkers carry several limitations. Functional tests, individually or composed, as quantitative instruments can be more informative than rating scales. The most used ones are Click Test (CLK-T) and Nine Hole Pegboard Test (9HPB-T), which were developed to quantitatively measure upper limb’s function. Moreover, their utility in SCAs, including MJD, has already been demonstrated. However, rating scales and functional tests are of episodic nature and are carried out in an environment outside of patient’s daily routines. Digital biomarkers can help us to find a proper response to this demand as they can comprise disease assessments in a real-world environment. Aiming to identify a new digital biomarker to objectively measure severity and progression of SCAs, we developed a smartphone app to evaluate upper limb coordination taking into consideration the two physical functional tests: CLK-T and 9HPB-T. In an increasingly digital world, those who remain offline may face greater challenges across multiple contexts of everyday life. Besides being less likely to be internet users, older age groups go online less frequently and for fewer activities. Understanding which factors facilitate or prevent internet use in later life is therefore essential to minimize existing age-based digital inequalities. Based on the 2014 and 2017 waves of the German Ageing Survey, comprising 3,479 respondents aged 40 years and older, this study examined the longitudinal relationships of a wide range of often overlooked, yet potentially relevant factors related to functional ability, social support, and self-perceptions of aging with general internet use and seven specific online behaviors. As the only factors relating to general use and a considerable number of specific uses, cognitive functioning and competence-related self-perceptions of aging emerged as the most important correlates of internet use in middle and late adulthood. Better cognitive functioning preceded contacting friends, acquaintances, and relatives, searching for information, banking, and shopping more frequently 3 years later. In turn, competence self-perceptions of aging preceded contacting others, searching for new social contacts, seeking information, banking, engaging in online entertainment, and creating contents more frequently 3 years later. Reciprocal relationships were also found between each factor and general use, suggesting mutual influences. Additionally, physical functioning and received informational support preceded greater use for specific activities. These findings elucidate which factors to consider when developing effective strategies to promote general and specific internet use among middle-aged and older adults. This study is based on the conservation of resources theory and the recovery step model in order to further explore the furr-recovery method—a mechanism through which workers break their routine by taking micro-moments to interact with their “furry co-workers,” thus relieving their fatigue and tension or other negative affective states. Based on this, we argue that this method not only serves the purpose of restoring self-regulatory resources but also ameliorates mental health. Accordingly, this study aims to analyze how daily human–animal interactions during teleworking positively influence teleworkers’ mental health, via recovering their self-regulatory resources, at the within-person level. Full-time teleworkers completed multiple online surveys for 5 consecutive workdays (N = 211 × 5 = 1055 daily observations). Multilevel path analysis results showed that on days on which employees had more micro-moments to interact with their “furry co-workers” during the day, they experienced a higher self-regulatory capacity and felt better while working. In sum, the findings give support for the theoretical resource perspective of interacting with pets as an effective energy management strategy while at work. This research extends the theoretical understanding of regulatory resources as a cognitive mechanism that links HAIs to employee mental health. Moreover, the findings outlined here offer practical implications by highlighting the furr-recovery method, a method that teleworkers who own pets may use as a strategy during the working day to restore resources needed to be healthier.

OBJETIVO: Em todo o mundo, os enfermeiros enfrentaram a pandemia SARS-CoV-2 desde o final do ano 2019, o que levou a alterações significativas no trabalho destes profissionais. O presente estudo tem como objetivo principal avaliar os níveis de resiliência e os níveis de burnout pessoal, burnout relacionado com o trabalho, e burnout relacionado com o cliente. METODOLOGIA: Seguindo uma metodologia quantitativa, exploratória e correlacional, inquiriram-se enfermeiros a trabalhar na Região Autónoma dos Açores, através de um questionário sociodemográfico, versão portuguesa do Copenhagen Burnout Inventory (CBI) e versão portuguesa da Resilience Scale (RS), disponibilizados numa plataforma digital (Google Forms). RESULTADOS: Os participantes apresentaram uma idade media de 41.2 anos, em que a maioria desempenha as suas funções na ilha São Miguel, seguido da ilha Terceira e outras ilhas. O tempo medio de serviço dos participantes e de 18.99 anos e desempenham uma media de carga horaria de 40 horas semanais. Ambos os instrumentos apresentam fiabilidade elevada para a escala de burnout pessoal e resiliência, verificando-se fiabilidade moderada para as escalas burnout relacionado com o cliente e burnout relacionado com o trabalho. Os resultados revelam que 49.5% dos enfermeiros apresentam burnout pessoal moderado a severo, 54.8% apresentam nível moderado a elevado de burnout relacionado com o trabalho e 38.6% dos participantes apresentam nível moderado a elevado de burnout relacionado com o cliente. No respeitante a resiliência o estudo permitiu demonstrar que os participantes são resilientes. Verificaram-se correlações moderadas e negativas entre o burnout e a resiliência. A pontuação total na escala resiliência permitiu identificar que os participantes em estudo são resilientes (M = 122.59). A variável resiliência demonstrou ser uma possível variável mediadora ou preditora de burnout. CONCLUSÕES: A resiliência revela-se uma variável relevante na mediação dos níveis de burnout nos enfermeiros. Futuros estudos devem ser baseados na importância que esta variável tem na qualidade de vida e bem-estar destes profissionais. ABSTRACT: OBJECTIVE: Around the world, nurses face the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic since the year 2019, with significant changes to their work. The present study has as main objective to evaluate the levels of resilience and the levels of personal burnout, burnout related to work, and burnout related to the client. METHODOLOGY: A quantitative, exploratory, and correlational study was implemented. A total of 305 nurses working in the Autonomous Region of the Azores answered a sociodemographic questionnaire, the Portuguese version of the Copenhagen Burnout Inventory (CBI), and the Portuguese version of the Resilience Scale (RS), available on a digital platform (Google Forms). RESULTS: The average age of the participants is 41.72 years old and most of them work on the island of Sao Miguel, followed by the island of Terceira and other islands. The average length of service of the participants is 18.99 years and they work an average of 40 hours per week. Both instruments show high reliability for the personal burnout scale and resilience, with moderate reliability for the client-related burnout and work-related burnout scales. The results reveal that 49.5% of nurses have moderate to severe personal burnout, 54.8% moderate to high burnout related to work, and 38.6% moderate to high burnout related to the client. The total score on the Resilience scale made it possible to identify levels of resilience in the participants (M = 122.59). In the present study, it was possible to verify moderate and negative correlations between burnout and resilience. The Resilience variable proved to be a mediating variable or predictor of burnout. CONCLUSIONS: Resilience proves to be a relevant variable in the mediation of burnout levels in nurses. Future studies should focus on the importance of this variable in the quality of life and well-being of these professionals.

Dissertação de Mestrado apresentada no Ispa – Instituto Universitário para obtenção de grau de Mestre na especialidade de Biologia Marinha e Conservação A herbivoria é fundamental no controlo de algas marinhas invasoras. A enemy release hypothesis prevê a propagação de algas marinhas invasoras devido à falta de inimigos coevoluídos (ex., herbívoros) enquanto a biotic resistance hypothesis suporta que alguns podem ser capazes de consumir plantas invasoras e, portanto, controlar a sua propagação. Caulerpa prolifera é uma alga marinha verde que está a ter um comportamento invasor sem precedentes na Ria Formosa, estando a expandir-se rapidamente pela lagoa desde o ano 2015. Esta rápida expansão pode ter várias causas, sendo a falta de controlo top-down realizado por herbívoros uma causa muito provável, a qual permanece, em grande parte, inexplorada. Neste estudo, realizamos ensaios alimentares para caracterizar as interações entre macroherbívoros nativos, nomeadamente o ouriço-do-mar Paracentrotus lividus e o peixe Sarpa salpa, e a alga C. prolifera para compreender os mecanismos do controlo top-down face a sua expansão. Ambos herbívoros foram capazes de se alimentar de C. prolifera. Embora as taxas de consumo de P. lividus tenderam a ser maiores na alga nativa Ulva sp. do que na invasora C. prolifera, apenas S. salpa apresentou diferenças significativas, consumindo em média o dobro da quantidade de Ulva sp. do que C. prolifera. Além disso, S. salpa preferiu claramente a alga nativa Ulva sp. quando foi oferecida junto da invasora C. prolifera. Os nossos resultados fornecem evidências experimentais a favor da enemy release hypothesis sendo que os principais herbívoros presentes na Ria Formosa parecem estar a exercer um controlo top-down limitado sobre C. prolifera. Esta falta de controlo pode estar a favorecer a rápida expansão desta alga invasora pela lagoa. ABSTRACT: Herbivory plays an important role in controlling non-native seaweeds. The enemy release hypothesis predicts the success of invasive plants due of a lack of co-evolved enemies (i.e., herbivores), while the biotic resistance hypothesis states that some may be able to feed on invasive, controlling its spread. The opportunistic green seaweed Caulerpa prolifera is drastically and unprecedently spreading in the Ria Formosa since 2015. The quick spread of C. prolifera on the Ria Formosa may have several causes, among which the top-down control by native herbivores remains largely unexplored. In this study we performed a suite of feeding assays to characterize novel interactions between native macroherbivores, namely the sea urchin Paracentrotus lividus and the fish Sarpa salpa, and the invasive C. prolifera, in order to better understand the mechanisms behind the expansion of the seaweed across the lagoon. Both herbivores were able to feed on C. prolifera. Even though P. lividus consumption rates tended to be higher on native seaweed Ulva sp. than on C. prolifera, only S. salpa showed significant differences, consuming on average twice the amount of Ulva sp. than C. prolifera. Moreover, S. salpa clearly preferred the native seaweed Ulva sp. to C. prolifera. Our findings provide experimental evidence in favor of the enemy release hypothesis, as main herbivores appear to exert a limited top-down control in terms of consumption rate and feeding preference on C. prolifera in the Ria Formosa lagoon. This might be favoring the spread of this opportunistic seaweed across the lagoon.

Dissertação de Mestrado apresentada no Ispa – Instituto Universitário para obtenção de grau de Mestre na especialidade de Biologia Marinha e Conservação. A pesca comercial do Cavaco (Scyllarides latus) e da Lagosta (Palinurus elephas) tem vindo sempre a crescer devido ao seu alto valor comercial, no entanto, não há muito conhecimento sobre o estado destas duas espécies. Conhecer o estado das diferentes espécies através de estudos de avaliação dos “stocks” pesqueiros é essencial para a implementação de medidas de proteção mais eficazes, de forma a garantir uma exploração sustentável. Desde 1985 que se sabe que a maioria das capturas destas espécies são vendidas clandestinamente. O Cavaco está atualmente classificado como “Data Deficient” na Lista Vermelha da IUCN, comprovando que os estudos sobre esta espécie são escassos, e a Lagosta está classificada como “Vulnerável”. A determinação de um tamanho mínimo legal de captura para estas espécies provou não ser efetiva em 1998, contudo, nada foi alterado em termos de regulamentação desde essa data. Os últimos estudos realizados nos Açores para S. latus foram há quase 40 anos, e já passou uma década desde o último estudo sobre P. elephas. Com este estudo pretende-se contribuir com nova informação para esclarecer o estado das populações de S. latus e P. elephas nos Açores, comparando-o com os dados históricos. Para tanto, foram analisados: os padrões de migração vertical para S. latus; os tamanhos dos espécimes comparando profundidades e sexos; e os tamanhos médios das populações ao longo dos anos, comprovando que o tamanho médio de P. elephas diminuiu quase 1cm em 20 anos. Este conhecimento é essencial para alertar a população e o governo para criar melhores medidas de regulação, a fim de cessar a depleção destas espécies. ABSTRACT: The commercial fishing of the Slipper lobster (Scyllarides latus) and the Spiny lobster (Palinurus elephas) has always been increasing, due to these species’ high commercial value, however, there is not much knowledge about their status. Getting to know the status of different species through studies on the assessment of fish stocks is essential for the implementation of better protection measures, to ensure a sustainable exploitation. Since 1985 that it is known that most catches of these species are sold clandestinely. The S. latus is currently classified as “Data deficient” on the IUCN Red List, proving that the studies on this species are scarce, and the P. elephas is classified as “Vulnereble”. The determination of a minimum legal capture size for these species has proven not to be effective in 1998, however, nothing has been changed in terms of regulations since then. The last studies conducted in the Azores for S. latus were almost 40 years ago, and a decade has passed since the last study on P. elephas. This study pretends to contribute with new information to enlighten the recent S. latus and P. elephas populations’ status in the Azores, comparing them to the historical data. For that, it was analyzed: the vertical migration patterns for S. latus; the specimens sizes comparing depths and sexes; and that the populations’ mean sizes through the years, proving that the P. elephas mean size has almost decreased 1cm in 20 years. This knowledge is essential to alert the population and the government to create better regulation measures, in order to cease these species depletion.

Thesis presented at Ispa – Instituto Universitário for the attainment of the degree of master’s in Marine Biology and Conservation ABSTRACT: In light of the intensifying threats to the marine environment, one of the most globally used tools is Marine Protected Areas (MPAs). There is a range of different types of MPAs, with different characteristics and levels of protection. To standardize MPA categories globally, the IUCN has created the IUCN Management Categories. However, its application in classifying MPAs is questionable since it works based on projected objectives, and these are not always reflected in the regulations applied. Incorrect classification of MPAs can lead to a false sense of protection and ultimately to failure in protecting the marine environment. In order to address these issues, two different classification systems have recently been developed, based on the regulations of uses within each zone/AMP. These are the Regulation Based Classification System (RBCS) and the MPA Guide. In this study, the three systems mentioned, IUCN, RBCS and MPA Guide, were used to classify and categorize the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park (GBRMP) in Australia. The results show that both the RBCS and the MPA Guide assign similar classifications, with 64% of the GBRMP areas being poorly protected, 36% moderately protected, and

A ocorrência de microplásticos já foi documentada em várias espécies marinhas, tanto selvagens quanto de aquacultura. Este estudo tem como objetivo analisar a presença de partículas (possivelmente microplásticos) no trato gastrointestinal de espécies com importância comercial (Dicentrarchus labrax, robalo; Sparus aurata, dourada e Diplodus sargus, sargo) na Ria Formosa (Portugal). Para além de investigar a ingestão em peixes salvagens, este estudo pretende ainda comparar a abundância de partículas entre os indivíduos selvagens e de aquacultura. Neste estudo foram analisados 100 indivíduos. O trato gastrointestinal dos mesmos foi digerido e posteriormente observado à lupa. Foram encontradas partículas em 32 dos 60 indivíduos selvagens e em 15 dos 40 indivíduos provenientes de aquacultura. Todas as espécies selvagens apresentaram uma percentagem de ingestão semelhante, enquanto que na aquacultura a S. aurata registou uma percentagem maior de ingestão de partículas, quando comparada com D. labrax. O número médio de partículas por peixe foi maior para os indivíduos selvagens, sendo superior a 1 em todas as espécies, enquanto o robalo e a dourada de aquacultura registaram uma média de 0,6 e de 0,45 partículas por peixe, respetivamente. O tipo de partículas predominante foi a fibra e a cor mais frequentemente observada foi o azul, tanto em indivíduos selvagens quanto em aquacultura. Como os potenciais riscos dos microplásticos para a saúde humana ainda são incertos, é imperativo comparar os seus níveis de ocorrência em espécies selvagens e de aquacultura. Esta tese é um contributo para a crescente literatura nesta temática ABSTRACT: The occurrence of microplastics has already been documented in several wild marine and aquaculture species. This study aims to analyze the presence of possible microplastic particles in the gastrointestinal tract of commercially important species (Dicentrarchus labrax, Sparus aurata and Diplodus sargus) from Ria Formosa (Portugal). It also intends to compare the abundance of particles between wild and aquaculture sea bass and seabream. A total of 100 GIT samples were visually inspected with a stereomicroscope after digestion. Particles were present in 32 out of 60 wild individuals and in 15 out of 40 aquaculture individuals. All 3 wild species had similar ingestion percentage, while in aquaculture S. aurata registered a higher percentage compared to D. labrax. The average number of particles per fish was higher for wild individuals. All wild species recorded values greater than 1 while aquaculture sea bass and gilthead seabream recorded 0.6 and 0.45 particles per fish, respectively. The most frequent type and color of particles were fibers and blue, both in wild and aquaculture individuals. Since microplastics potential risks to human health are still uncertain, it is imperative to assess its levels in wild and aquaculture species that are most consumed by humans.

O muco dos peixes teleósteos é, tal como o de muitos outros vertebrados, produzido pelas células epidérmicas e epiteliais. Existem diversas espécies de peixes cujo muco epidérmico parece apresentar propriedades bioativas e as espécies Halobatrachus didactylus e Callionymus lyra parecem também ser exemplos disso. Uma das hipóteses a testar é que o muco produzido abundantemente por ambas as espécies possua parecenças. Esta hipótese surge da observação de que estes peixes, quando em estado de stress, provocam a morte de outros que com eles partilhem um espaço confinado. A comparação dos perfis proteicos SDS-PAGE das duas espécies, de famílias distintas (Batrachoididae e Callionymidae), revelou algumas semelhanças. Seria o esperado caso o muco apresentasse funções semelhantes em ambas as espécies. Para explorar em detalhe a constituição do muco destas espécies foram ainda realizados perfis de HPLC-DAD. E, com vista a uma potencial aplicação biomédica foram realizados ensaios antimicrobianos e antioxidantes em C. lyra. Os perfis de HPLC-DAD demonstraram um pico cromatográfico com 887 Da, em ambas as espécies, podendo tratar-se do mesmo péptido. Relativamente aos ensaios, C. lyra apresentou atividade antimicrobiana contra a bactéria Staphylococcus aureus e uma atividade antioxidante significativa. Estes resultados preliminares são suficientemente promissores para justificar continuar a avaliar as aplicações potenciais do muco destas espécies. No futuro, seria interessante identificar os componentes mais promissores para diferentes aplicações em biomedicina ABSTRACT: ABSTRACT: Epidermal mucus is a fluid that covers the surface of the epidermis of fish, forming a barrier that separates the internal and external environment. Like many other vertebrates the mucus of teleost fish is produced by epidermal and epithelial cells. There are several fish species whose skin mucus presents bioactive properties and species like Halobatrachus didactylus and Callionymus lyra are not an exception. One of the hypotheses to be tested is that the epidermal mucus produced abundantly by both species presents a strong effect. This hypothesis arises from the observation that these fish, in stress conditions, are lethal for other fish species while captive in confined spaces. The comparison of the SDS-PAGE protein profiles of the two species, families Batrachoididae and Callionymidae, revealed some similarities. It would be expected if the mucus had similar functions in both species. To better explore the constitution of the mucus of these species HPLC-DAD profiles were also performed. And, with a view to a potential biomedical application, antimicrobial and antioxidant assays were performed on C. lyra. The HPLC-DAD profiles show a chromatographic peak with 887 Da in both species, which could represent the same peptide. When it comes to assays, C. lyra show antibacterial activity against gram-positive bacteria Staphylococcus aureus and a significant antioxidant activity. Preliminary results are promising enough to justify further research to explore the potential of the mucus produced by these species. In the future, it would be interesting to identify the most promising mucus components for different applications in biomedicine.

Dissertação de Mestrado apresentada no ISPA – Instituto Universitário para a obtenção de grau de Mestre na especialidade de Biologia Marinha e Conservação A ilha de Poilão, na Guiné-Bissau, alberga uma das seis maiores populações nidificantes de tartarugas-verdes Chelonia mydas do mundo. Face à ausência de conhecimento sobre o comportamento de mergulho das tartarugas desta população, foram colocados transmissores Fast GPS equipados com sensores de profundidade em treze fêmeas nidificantes em 2021. Os movimentos horizontais e as profundidades ocupadas pelos indivíduos foram analisados para três períodos do ciclo de vida – reprodução, migração e alimentação. Durante o período de reprodução, as tartarugas permaneceram próximas a Poilão, onde a média das profundidades máximas de mergulho foi 13,9 m (± 5,0 m). Durante a migração, as tartarugas estabeleceram duas rotas distintas. Nove indivíduos migraram para a Mauritânia e um indivíduo migrou para o Gana. A maioria das rotas foram costeiras, observando-se uma única rota oceânica. A média das profundidades máximas de mergulho durante a migração para a Mauritânia e para o Gana foi 21,8 m (± 13,9 m) e 29,4 m (± 9,5 m), respetivamente. Nas áreas de alimentação, a média das profundidades máximas de mergulho foi 9,9 m (± 5,7 m) na Mauritânia e de 26,1 m (± 9,3 m) no Gana. A ocupação de águas pouco profundas durante o período de reprodução sugere que as tartarugas repousam durante parte do tempo sob estruturas rochosas para contrabalançar a flutuabilidade positiva. As profundidades usadas pelas tartarugas durante as migrações costeiras foram idênticas às usadas por conspecíficos no Mediterrâneo. Na Mauritânia, a ocupação frequente de profundidades para além do limite de crescimento de ervas marinhas e algas marinhas sugere que durante o inverno as tartarugas apresentam atividade alimentar reduzida. Por sua vez, as profundidades usadas no Gana podem sugerir que a tartaruga que frequentou esta zona terá tido uma dieta omnívora. Este estudo, para além de aumentar o conhecimento sobre a ecologia e o comportamento de mergulho das tartarugas-verdes de Poilão, contém dados que podem informar os regulamentos zonais da atividade pesqueira e os regulamentos sobre o uso de artes de pesca, de forma a reduzir as capturas acessórias de tartarugas desta população ao longo da costa oeste africana. Poilão Island, in Guinea-Bissau, hosts a green turtle Chelonia mydas nesting population among the top six worldwide. Due to the lack of knowledge about the diving behaviour of the turtles of this population, Argos linked FastGPS tags equipped with depth sensors were placed in thirteen nesting females in 2021. The horizontal movements and the depths occupied by the turtles were analysed for three periods of the life cycle – breeding, migration and foraging. During the breeding period turtles remained close to Poilão, where the average maximum dive depths was 13.9 m (± 5.0 m). During migration, turtles established two distinct routes. Nine turtles travelled to Mauritania and one travelled to Ghana. Turtles followed coastal routes and a single oceanic route was observed. The average maximum dive depths during the migration to Mauritania and Ghana were 21.8 m (± 13.9 m) and 29.4 m (± 9.5 m), respectively. On foraging grounds, the average maximum dive depths were 9.9 m (± 5.7 m) in Mauritania and 26.1 m (± 9.3 m) in Ghana. The occupation of shallow waters during the breeding season suggests that turtles may rest part of the time under rocky structures to counterbalance positive buoyancy. The depths used by turtles during coastal migrations were identical to those used by conspecifics in the Mediterranean. In Mauritania, the frequent occupation of depths beyond the limits of seagrass and algal growth suggests that during the winter turtles have reduced feeding activity. In turn, the depths used in Ghana may suggest that this particular turtle had an omnivorous diet. This study, in addition to increasing knowledge about the ecology and diving behavior of the green turtles of Poilão, contains data that can inform zonal fishing regulations and regulations on gear-use to reduce bycatch of turtles from this population along the West African coast.

A libertação de CO2 para a atmosfera desde a Revolução Industrial levou à aceleração das alterações climáticas, aumentando a temperatura da atmosfera e dos oceanos. Para os organismos ectotérmicos, como os peixes, a temperatura é um fator determinante para vários processos comportamentais, fisiológicos, e metabólicos, que são otimizados dentro de uma gama limitada de temperaturas. A compreensão de como o aquecimento dos oceanos terá impacto nestas espécies é, portanto, da maior relevância para fins de gestão e conservação. O objetivo deste trabalho consistiu em avaliar os efeitos do aquecimento no crescimento, taxas de ingestão e comportamento do cavalo-marinho, Hippocampus guttulatus. Os indivíduos foram recolhidos antes da época de reprodução, no estuário do Sado, e expostos durante um período de 8 semanas a três temperaturas diferentes: 17ºC, 20ºC e 24ºC. Três vezes por semana, foram realizadas observações comportamentais. A taxa de ingestão foi contabilizada diariamente e os indivíduos pesados uma vez por semana. Os resultados do presente estudo indicam diferenças nas respostas comportamentais e fisiológicas dos cavalos-marinhos expostos a condições de aquecimento durante um período de longa duração (8 semanas). Em condições de temperatura extrema (24 ºC), os peixes estavam mais ativos, alimentavam-se mais, mas este aumento de energia através da alimentação não se traduziu num aumento de peso. No conjunto, estes dados podem indicar que esta população de cavalos-marinhos pode vir a estar sob stress térmico quando expostos, por um longo período, a condições de aquecimento que se esperam no final do século The oceans provide inestimable services to the planet. The continuous CO2 release to the atmosphere since the Industrial Revolution, have led to the acceleration of climate change, with emphasis on the increase of the atmosphere and oceans’ temperature. Ocean warming will impact marine organisms at several levels. For ectotherms, such as fish, temperature is a determinant cue for several behavioural, physiological, and metabolic processes, which are optimized to take place within a limited temperature range. Understanding of how ocean warming will impact species is, therefore, of utmost relevance for management and conservation purposes. Here, we aimed to assess the effects of ocean warming on growth, feed intake, and behavioural patterns, including courtship and reproduction, of the long-snouted seahorse, Hippocampus guttulatus. Fish were collected, prior the breeding season, in the Sado estuary, and subsequently exposed for an 8-week period to three different temperatures: 17ºC, 20ºC and 24ºC. Three times a week, behavioural observations were performed. Feed intake was measured every day and individuals weighted once a week. Results from the present study indicate differences in behavioural and physiological responses in seahorses exposed to increasingly warming conditions. Under extreme temperature conditions (24 ºC), fish were more active, fed more, but this increment of energy through feeding did not translate into increased growth in weight. Altogether, these data may indicate that Sado’s wild population of long-snouted seahorse may become under thermal stress when exposed, for a long term, to warming conditions that are expected to occur in the end of the century.

Os incêndios urbanos são definidos como sendo um processo de combustão, sem limitação da sua extensão no espaço e no tempo, dos materiais combustíveis existentes em edifícios, incluindo os constituintes dos elementos do construção e respetivos revestimentos. Este tipo de incêndios ocorre com muito frequência em todo o mundo, sendo os edifícios mais frequentemente afetados os destinados a habitação familiar e multifamiliar. A Segurança Contra Incêndios em Edifícios (SCIE) tem por objetivo garantir a manutenção das condições de segurança, definidas no projeto, ao longo da vida dos edifícios. Um dos instrumentos mais utilizados em SCIE, a par de um bom projeto de execução, são as Medidas de Autoproteção (MAP), as quais garantem não só as condições para o combate a incêndios, bem como a definição de procedimentos de atuação em caso de emergência, como são os casos do alarme, alerta ou da evacuação. Em Portugal, a SCIE é regulamentada pelo Decreto-Lei n.º 220/2008, de 12 de novembro, na sua redação atual, a qual estabelece o Regime Jurídico da Segurança Contra Incêndios em Edifícios (RJSCIE) e pela Portaria n.º 135/2020, de 2 de junho, que altera o Regulamento Técnico de Segurança Contra Incêndios em Edifícios (RTSCIE), aprovado pela Portaria n.º 1532/2008, de 29 de dezembro. Estes instrumentos regulamentadores visam abranger todos os cenários de possível ocorrência de incêndio em edifícios, prevenindo a sua ocorrência. No entanto, existem situações em que a legislação não obriga a implementação de medidas de prevenção, proteção e combate a incêndios. Exemplo destas situações são os edifícios de habitação familiar e multifamiliar (Utilização-tipo I (UT-I)), das primeira e segunda categorias de risco, para os quais não existe obrigação de implementação de MAP. Dada a ocorrência de incêndios urbanos em edifícios de habitação, os quais afetam diretamente a segurança de pessoas e animais, o presente trabalho visa propor um conjunto de boas práticas de segurança contra incêndios em edifícios de habitação, promovendo a segurança e reduzindo os riscos. ABSTRACT: Urban fires are defined as a combustion process, without limitation of its extension in space and time, of combustible materials existing in buildings, including the constituents of construction elements and respective coatings. This type of fire occurs very frequently throughout the world, with the buildings most frequently affected being buildings intended for family and multi-family housing. The Safety Against Fire in Buildings aims to guarantee the maintenance of the safety conditions, defined in the project, throughout the life of the buildings. One of the most used instruments in the safety against fire in buildings, along with a good execution project, are the Self-Protection Measures, which guarantee not only the conditions for fighting fires, as well the definition of procedures for action in emergency, such as cases of alarm, alert or evacuation. In Portugal, the safety against fire in buildings is regulated by Decree-Law n.220/2008, of November 12th November in its current wording, which establishes the Legal Regime for Fire Safety in Buildings and by Decree-Law n. 135/2020, of June 2nd, which amends the Technical Regulation on Fire Safety in Buildings, approved by Decree-Law n. 1532/2008, of December 29th. These regulatory tools aim to cover all scenarios of possible fire occurrence in buildings, preventing its occurrence. However, there are situations that the legislation does not require the implementation of fire prevention, protection and fighting measures. Examples of these situations are family and multifamily housing buildings (Use-type I (UT-I)), in the first and second risk categories, where it is not mandatory to implement a Self-Protection Measures. Given the occurrence of urban fires in residential buildings, which directly affect the safety of people and animals, the present work aims to propose a set of good fire safety practices in residential buildings, promoting safety and reducing risks.

Football performance behaviour relies on the individual and collective perceptual attunement to the opportunities for action (affordances) available in a given competitive environment. Such perception–action coupling is constrained by players’ spatial dominance. Aiming to understand the influence of team formation and players’ roles in their dynamic interaction (interpersonal linkages), Voronoi diagrams were used to assess the differences in players’ spatial dominance resulting from their interactions according to ball-possession status in high-performance football. Notational (i.e., team formation, players’ role, and ball-possession status) and positional data (from optical sensors) from ten matches of the men’s French main football league were analysed. Voronoi diagrams were computed from players’ positional data for both teams. Probability density functions of the players’ Voronoi cell areas were then computed and compared, using the Kolmogorov–Smirnov test, for the different variables (i.e., team formation, player role, and ball-possession status) and their classes. For these variables, the players’ Voronoi cell areas presented statistical differences, which were sensitive to team formation classes (i.e., defenders, midfielders, and forwards) and relative pitch location (interior or exterior in the effective play space). Differences were also found between players with similar roles when in different team formations. Our results showed that team formation and players’ roles constrain their interpersonal linkages, resulting in different spatial dominance patterns. Using positional data captured by optical sensors, Voronoi diagrams can be computed into compound variables, which are meaningful for understanding the match and thus offer information to the design representative training tasks.

The burden of large and rare copy number genetic variants (CNVs) as well as certain specific CNVs increase the risk of developing schizophrenia. Several cognitive measures are purported schizophrenia endophenotypes and may represent an intermediate point between genetics and the illness. This paper investigates the influence of CNVs on cognition. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of the literature exploring the effect of CNV burden on general intelligence. We included ten primary studies with a total of 18,847 participants and found no evidence of association. In a new psychosis family study, we investigated the effects of CNVs on specific cognitive abilities. Porpitidae é uma família de hidrozoários neustónicos pouco investigados geneticamente, onde a maioria das publicações menciona somente a sua ocorrência. Para estudar a diversidade desta família nos Açores, foram recolhidos 277 indivíduos em praias de duas ilhas (Faial e São Miguel) e morfologicamente identificados como Velella velella ou Porpita porpita. Para confirmar a identificação das espécies e investigar a sua diversidade genética, associações filogeográficas e a estrutura da população, as amostras foram sequenciadas utilizando três marcadores moleculares diferentes: COI, 16S e ITS. O dispositivo MinION (Oxford Nanopore Technologies) foi utilizado, proporcionando uma sequenciação de leitura longa e rápida em tempo real. Foram construídas redes de haplótipos e árvores filogenéticas. A análise das sequências revelou diversidade genética dos Porpitidae nos Açores. No entanto, a variabilidade intra-género foi praticamente nula no gene nuclear (ITS) quando comparada com os genes mitocondriais (COI e 16S). Comparando com sequências disponíveis nas bases de dados, foi possível verificar uma maior semelhança com os indivíduos amostrados em locais mais próximos dos Açores (Mediterrâneo e Mar dos Sargassos). Nos genes com elevada diversidade genética, também foi possível distinguir dois indivíduos do género Porpita que exibiam uma distância genética significativa quando comparados com outros do mesmo local. Apesar da análise da delimitação das espécies ter apresentado resultados diferentes para ambos os métodos, o resultado sugeriu que podem existir duas a dezasseis espécies, mas há uma maior possibilidade de haver apenas duas espécies. Este estudo forneceu informações importantes ao nível taxonómico da família Porpitidae. Através deste trabalho foi conhecida uma boa representação da diversidade genética dos Porpitidae. Embora o número de indivíduos amostrados seja bastante grande, a baixa representação geográfica das amostras relativamente à distribuição dos géneros pode condicionar os resultados. Seria importante investigar indivíduos de outros locais e utilizar outros marcadores para providenciar informações mais completas. ABSTRACT: Porpitidae is a family of neustonic hydrozoans scarcely investigated genetically, with most scientific publications mentioning solely their occurrence. In order to study the diversity of this family in the Azores, a total of 277 individuals were analysed. These animals were collected on beach areas of two islands (Faial and São Miguel) and morphologically identified as Velella velella or Porpita porpita. To confirm species identification and to investigate their genetic diversity, phylogeographic associations and population structure, the samples were sequenced using three different molecular markers: COI, 16S and ITS. The MinION (Oxford Nanopore Technologies) sequencing device was utilized, providing long and fast reading sequencing in real-time. Haplotype networks and phylogenetic trees were built. The analysis of the sequences revealed genetic diversity in the Porpitidae in the Azores. However, the intra-genus nucleotidic variability was practically null in the nuclear gene (ITS) when compared to mitochondrial genes (COI and 16S). When confronting with other sequences available in the databases, it was possible to verify a greater similarity with individuals sampled in locations closer to the Azores (Mediterranean and Sargasso Sea). In the genes with high genetic diversity, it was also possible to distinguish two sampled Porpita individuals, which exhibited a high genetic distance compared to the others. Although the species delimitation analysis exhibited different results in both methods, the outcome suggested that there may exist two to sixteen species, but there is a higher possibility that there are only two species. This study provided important information at the taxonomic level of the Porpitidae family. Through this work, a good representation of the genetic diversity of Porpitidae was known. Although the number of individuals sampled was quite large, the low geographical representation of the samples in relation to the distribution of the genera may condition the results. It would be important to investigate individuals from other locations as well as to use other molecular markers in order to provide more complete information.

Good musical abilities are typically considered to be a consequence of music training, such that they are studied in samples of formally trained individuals. Here, we asked what predicts musical abilities in the absence of music training. Participants with no formal music training (N = 190) completed the Goldsmiths Musical Sophistication Index, measures of personality and cognitive ability, and the Musical Ear Test (MET). The MET is an objective test of musical abilities that provides a Total score and separate scores for its two subtests (Melody and Rhythm), which require listeners to determine whether standard and comparison auditory sequences are identical. MET scores had no associations with personality traits. They correlated positively, however, with informal musical experience and cognitive abilities. Informal musical experience was a better predictor of Melody than of Rhythm scores. Some participants (12%) had Total scores higher than the mean from a sample of musically trained individuals (⩾6 years of formal training), tested previously by Correia et al. Untrained participants with particularly good musical abilities (top 25%, n = 51) scored higher than trained participants on the Rhythm subtest and similarly on the Melody subtest. High-ability untrained participants were also similar to trained ones in cognitive ability, but lower in the personality trait openness-to-experience. These results imply that formal music training is not required to achieve musician-like performance on tests of musical and cognitive abilities. Several generalist species have been increasingly colonizing urban areas as a response of the degradation of their original habitats combined with the increase of predictable food resources and desirable breeding conditions in urban areas. Gulls started to nest in rooftops around 1890s and after that several gull species have been increasingly breeding at rooftops in several countries around the globe. The breeding and foraging behaviour associated with this colonization has been causing a variety of conflicts with the human population, not only by increasing disturbance levels through direct human-gull interactions, but also by the concerning role of gulls as reservoirs of pathogens. However, urban areas present a variety of challenges when it comes to studying these birds, and the foraging and breeding ecology of urban gulls is not yet fully understood, it is also not clear if urban areas represent an ecological trap with immediate benefits but with longer-term health detrimental consequences. Thus, this thesis addresses several parameters of urban gulls’ life to understand the trade-offs that they face when moving to this novel urban environment; what triggers and encourage gulls to keep using the cities, and how they interact with humans. In summary, this thesis includes the study of diet, general health, breeding success, urban habitat-use and behaviour of urban Yellow-legged gulls (Larus michahellis) in the city of Porto. The major findings highlight: (1) the importance of human activities to create desirable conditions for the establishment of new urban gull colonies, while at the same time contributing for the deterioration of conditions in traditional natural colonies; and the importance of conducting long-term monitoring studies that capture the long-term establishment of urban gull populations; (2) the importance that marine prey still have in the diet of urban gulls, particularly for younger chicks; (3) the trade-offs that breeding urban gulls face between the advantages of breeding in urban colonies with lower nest density, where the transmission of diseases is less likely to occur, and the disadvantages linked to a lower quality ‘anthropogenic-derived’ diet; and lastly, (4) the importance of the winter season in the use of urban habitats by gulls and the occurrence of human-gull interactions, which tend to increase during this season in city-squares, and are mostly triggered by humans feeding birds. The implementation of measures that aim to reduce major sources of predictable anthropogenic subsidies, the availability of suitable urban nesting grounds and the urban gulls’ breeding output, combined with major environmental education and social awareness campaigns, should improve the efficiency of managing human-gull conflicts, by targeting this problem in a holistic manner. Várias espécies generalistas têm vindo a colonizar áreas urbanas como resultado da degradação dos seus habitats originais em combinação com o aumento de recursos alimentares previsíveis e das condições de reprodução em áreas urbanas. As gaivotas começaram a construir ninhos nos telhados de zonas urbanas por volta de 1890, e desde essa altura cada vez mais espécies de gaivotas têm vindo a reproduzir-se em edifícios localizados em vários países do mundo. O comportamento de reprodução e de procura de alimento associado com a colonização de ambientes urbanos tem causado diversos conflitos com a população humana, não só pelos distúrbios resultantes de interações entre humanos e gaivotas, mas também por estas serem reservatórios de agentes patogénicos. No entanto as áreas urbanas estão associadas a uma variedade de desafios no que toca a estudar estas aves, pelo que a ecologia de reprodução e alimentação das gaivotas urbanas ainda não é totalmente compreendida, e ainda não é claro se as áreas urbanas representam uma armadilha ecológica, com benefícios imediatos mas com possíveis consequências para a saúde dos indivíduos a longo termo. Portanto, no âmbito desta tese, vários parâmetros da vida das gaivotas urbanas foram caracterizados e avaliados para compreender quais são as vantagens e desvantagens que as gaivotas enfrentam quando colonizam novos ambientes urbanos; quais os fatores que despoletam e encorajam as gaivotas a usarem as cidades e como interagem com a sociedade humana. Em suma, esta tese inclui o estudo da dieta, estado de saúde, sucesso reprodutor, uso do habitat urbano e comportamento da Gaivota-de-patas-amarelas (Larus michahellis), na cidade do Porto. Os principais resultados realçam: (1) a importância das atividades humanas ao criar condições desejáveis para o estabelecimento de novas colónias de gaivotas urbanas, contribuindo ao mesmo tempo para a deterioração das condições nas colónias tradicionais naturais, e a importância de realizar estudos de monitorização de longa duração que capturem a evolução das populações de gaivotas urbanas; (2) a importância que as presas marinhas ainda têm na dieta das gaivotas urbanas, particularmente na dieta das crias mais novas; (3) os compromissos que as gaivotas urbanas enfrentam entre as vantagens da reprodução em colónias urbanas de menor densidade populacional, onde a transmissão de doenças é menos provável de ocorrer, com as desvantagens de ter uma dieta antropogénica de menor qualidade; e por último, (4) a importância da temporada de inverno no uso de habitat urbano e na ocorrência de interações entre humanos e gaivotas nas praças da cidade, que tendem a aumentar durante esta época e que são sobretudo desencadeadas pela alimentação de aves pelo homem. A implementação de medidas que visem à redução de grandes fontes de alimento previsível, de áreas adequadas à nidificação urbana e à redução do sucesso reprodutor, em combinação com grandes campanhas de educação ambiental e de sensibilização, deverá melhorar a eficácia da gestão de conflitos entre humanos e gaivotas, ao abordar este problema de uma forma holística.

Thesis presented in fulfilment of the degree of PhD in Behavioural Biology presented at ISPA - Instituto Universitário in the year of 2022. O impacto humano no ambiente marinho é substancial e crescente, causando uma preocupação pelo futuro de várias espécies marinhas. É necessário um leque de medidas para reduzir os impactos negativos, incluindo a implementação de áreas protegidas e a regulação das actividades humanas no mar. No entanto, para que os esforços sejam eficazes, precisamos de uma melhor compreensão da ecologia da biodiversidade marinha. O seguimento com recurso a dispositivos electrónicos revolucionou o estudo do comportamento e da ecologia dos animais marinhos, melhorando a capacidade de conservar os seus habitats. O foco central desta tese é a aplicação do seguimento de animais à ecologia e à conservação marinha. Apresentamos uma revisão bibliográfica, uma ferramenta de software, e análises espaciais para ilustrar as formas como os dados de seguimento têm e podem ser utilizados em estudos de conservação de espécies marinhas. Para demonstrar como o seguimento de animais contribuiu na progressão do conhecimento sobre o comportamento e a ecologia das espécies marinhas, apresentamos exemplos da literatura relativos a avanços na compreensão da migração, da procura de alimento e seleção de habitat, e da navegação em megafauna marinha, desde aves marinhas a cetáceos. Desenvolvemos uma ferramenta de software acessível, "track2KBA", na linguagem de programação R, que facilita a análise de dados de seguimento para identificar locais importantes para a conservação. Ilustrámos os passos de análise do software e fornecemos exemplos de como a ferramenta pode ser útil para analisar dados de seguimento de uma grande variedade de espécies, tanto no ambiente marinho como terrestre. Analisámos dados GPS de 23 espécies de aves marinhas para avaliar a importância do seguimento de populações ao longo dos anos com o objetivo de identificar sítios de importância para essas espécies. Descobrimos que, quando um número suficiente de indivíduos é seguido, a amostra de dados recolhidos num único ano fornece frequentemente estimativas robustas da distribuição das populações. Ao analisar os movimentos de 40 tartarugas-verdes fêmeas (Chelonia mydas) de uma população (importante ao nível global) na Guiné-Bissau, África Ocidental, avaliámos a qualidade de uma rede regional de áreas marinhas protegidas para a conservação de tartarugas ao longo das estações,em vários países. Verificámos que as tartarugas são espacialmente bem protegidas entre eventos de desova, menos protegidas durante a migração, e que a protecção dos locais de alimentação dependia do país para onde migravam. Analisámos dados de seguimento de 39 espécies de albatrozes e espécies semelhantes (cagarras e pardelas) para quantificar, pela primeira vez, as áreas sob diferentes jurisdições, e a ligação entre elas, de que dependem estas aves marinhas severamente ameaçadas. Verificámos que estas aves passam 39% do seu tempo em áreas do alto-mar para além de jurisdições nacionais, e que através dos seus movimentos elas unem as jurisdições de numerosos países em todo o mundo, indicando a necessidade de uma cooperação internacional para que a sua conservação seja eficaz. As análises de dados de seguimento de espécies individuais e de grupos de espécies apresentadas nesta tese representam aplicações inovadoras à escala local, regional e global. Este trabalho contribui directamente para a identificação de locais importantes para a biodiversidade, tais como as “marine Key Biodiverisity Areas”, e para o desenvolvimento de colaborações internacionais para a conservação da biodiversidade marinha tanto em águas nacionais como em alto mar. The human footprint on the ocean environment is substantial and growing, causing widespread concern for the future of numerous marine species. Different measures are needed to reduce negative impacts, from establishing protected areas to regulating human activities at sea. For such efforts to be effective however, a sound understanding of the underlying ecology of marine biodiversity is needed. The tracking of animals using electronic devices has revolutionized our understanding of the behavior and ecology of marine animals and thereby improved our ability to effectively conserve them and their habitats. The central focus of this thesis is the application of animal tracking to marine ecology and conservation. Herein, we present a literature review, a software tool, and data analyses to illustrate ways in which tracking data have and can be used to inform the study and conservation of marine wildlife. To demonstrate how animal tracking has helped advance our knowledge of the behavior and ecology of marine species, we present examples from the literature regarding the study of migration, foraging and habitat use, and navigation in marine megafauna, from seabirds to cetaceans. We developed an accessible software tool, “track2KBA”, in the programming language R, which facilitates analyzing tracking data to identify important sites for conservation. We illustrate the package workflow, and provide examples of how the tool can be useful for analyzing tracking data from a wide variety of species and contexts, both in the marine and terrestrial realm. We analyzed GPS tracking data from 23 species of seabirds to assess the relevance of tracking populations across years when identifying sites of importance. We found that, when enough individuals are tracked, tracking datasets collected in a single year often provide robust pictures of population distributions. By analyzing the tracks of 40 female Green Turtles (Chelonia mydas) from a globally important nesting population in Guinea-Bissau, West Africa, we quantified how well a regional marine protected area network covers the turtles across seasons and countries. We found that turtles are spatially well-protected during the interesting period, less so during migration, and that protected area coverage at post-nesting foraging sites depended on the country turtles migrated to. We analyzed tracking data from 39 species of albatrosses and large petrels to quantify, for the first time, the political areas and links between jurisdictions that these highly threatened seabirds depend on. We found that these birds spend 39% of their time in areas beyond national jurisdiction, and connect the jurisdictions of numerous countries around the world, necessitating international cooperation for their effective conservation. The analyses of tracking data presented in this thesis represent novel applications at local, regional and global scales, concerning single species and groups of species. This work contributes directly to the identification of important sites for biodiversity, such as marine Key Biodiversity Areas, and to the development of international collaborations to conserve marine biodiversity in national waters and beyond. INTRODUÇÃO: A emergência e disseminação global de Enterobacteriaceae resistentes aos carbapenemes (CRE) constituem ameaças à saúde pública, estando associadas a um aumento das taxas de morbilidade e mortalidade, com particular relevância em doentes imunodeprimidos ou portadores de múltiplas patologias. Testes de sensibilidade aos antimicrobianos evidenciam um incremento de resistências destas bactérias, em virtude da variedade de mecanismos de resistência adquiridos. Em Portugal destaca-se Klebsiella pneumoniae da família das Enterobacteriaceae, associada maioritariamente a infeções urinárias. […]. RESULTADOS: Foram detetados 80 doentes, apresentando uma média de idade de 67,8 anos com ligeiro predomínio do género masculino, a maioria apresentando múltiplas patologias. Os casos foram maioritariamente associados a infeções urinárias (33,8%), mas incluindo igualmente colonizações (38,8%). Klebsiella pneumoniae foi detetada em 56,3% dos casos. Os antibióticos mais utilizados no tratamento destas infeções foram a ciprofloxacina (12,5%) e o meropenem (12,5%), tendo sido atribuída a designação de CRE a estas infeções sobretudo por resistência ao ertapenem (90%). O envelhecimento da pele é essencialmente causado pela formação contínua de espécies reativas de oxigénio e por uma exposição excessiva à radiação ultravioleta, provocando alterações na matriz extracelular (ECM) devido ao aumento de atividade das enzimas colagenase, elastase, hialuronidase e tirosinase. A pesquisa de produtos naturais com potencial antienvelhecimento tem sido, nos últimos anos, foco de investigação a nível mundial, demonstrando que as plantas são uma fonte relevante de compostos biologicamente ativos para a proteção da pele. Laurus azorica é uma espécie pouco estudada relativamente às suas atividades biológicas e aos seus constituintes químicos. O estudo desenvolvido nesta dissertação permitiu, pela primeira vez, aprofundar o conhecimento relativo à composição química e ao potencial antienvelhecimento do extrato etanólico, frações e compostos puros isolados de Laurus azorica. A fração MBP-22.1 foi analisada por CG-MS e revelou a presença de 56 compostos, entre eles alguns identificados pela primeira vez no género Laurus. A partir da mesma fração foram isoladas pela primeira vez em Laurus azorica, e caracterizadas estruturalmente usando técnicas espetroscópicas, três lactonas sesquiterpénicas, costunolide, 11,13-desidrosantonina e reinosina. Relativamente à atividade antienvelhecimento, os resultados obtidos mostraram que a fração MBP-22.2 apresentou maior poder antioxidante nos ensaios do DPPH e ABTS (IC50 = 34,67 ± 1,24 μg/mL e IC50 = 4,03 ± 0,47 μg/mL, respetivamente), cerca do dobro dos valores de IC50 obtidos para o padrão trolox, e uma excelente atividade de inibição da tirosinase (IC50 = 1,28 ± 0,35 μg/mL, comparável com o padrão ácido kójico, com IC50=1,82 ± 0,13 μg/mL). No ensaio do branqueamento do β-caroteno, o costunolide mostrou ser o mais ativo, seguido da fração MBP-22.3 (IC50 = 4,08 ± 0,76 μg/mL e 4,98 ± 0,36 μg/mL, respetivamente, cerca de 3,5 vezes e 2,92 vezes mais ativos do que o padrão ácido gálico, que apresentou IC50 = 14,56 ± 0,13 μg/mL). Entre as frações analisadas, a MBP-22.2 é, assim, a que apresenta maior potencial antienvelhecimento. ABSTRACT: Skin aging is essentially caused by the continuous formation of reactive oxygen species and excessive exposure to ultraviolet radiation, causing changes in the extracellular matrix (ECM) due to the increased activity of collagenase, elastase, hyaluronidase and tyrosinase enzymes. The search for natural products with anti-aging potential has been the focus of research worldwide in the past few years, demonstrating that plants are a relevant source of biologically active compounds for skin protection. Laurus azorica is a barely studied species regarding its biological activities and its chemical constituents. The study developed in this dissertation allowed for the first time to increase the knowledge regarding the chemical composition and antiaging potential of the ethanol extract, fractions and pure compounds isolated from Laurus azorica. The MBP-22.1 fraction was analyzed by GC-MS and revealed the presence of 56 compounds, them some of which were identified for the first time in the Laurus genus. Three sesquiterpenic lactones, costunolide, 11,13-dehydrosantonin and reinosin, were isolated for the first time in Laurus azorica from the same fraction, and structurally characterized using spectroscopic techniques. Regarding the antiaging activity, the results obtained showed that the MBP-22.2 fraction presented greater antioxidant power in the DPPH and ABTS assays (IC50 = 34.67 ± 1.24 μg/mL and IC50 = 4.03 ± 0.47 μg/ mL, respectively), about twice the IC50 values obtained for the trolox standard, and an excellent tyrosinase inhibition activity (IC50 = 1.28 ± 0.35 μg/mL, comparable to the kojic acid standard, with IC50 = 1.82 ± 0.13 μg/ml). In the β-carotene bleaching assay, costunolide was shown to be the most active, followed by the MBP-22.3 fraction (IC50 = 4.08 ± 0.76 μg/mL and 4.98 ± 0.36 μg/mL, respectively, about 3.5 times and 2.92 times more active than the standard gallic acid, which presented IC50 = 14.56 ± 0.13 μg/mL). Among the analysed fractions, MBP-22.2 is, therefore, the one with the greatest antiaging potential.

In Europe, salmonellosis has been ranked as the second leading cause of hospitalization and death due to the consumption of contaminated food. Information about consumers’ food safety perception, knowledge and practices in the domestic environment is lacking in order to define the main intervention opportunities to obtain a significant reduction in the occurrence of foodborne salmonellosis. We conducted an on-line survey of the Portuguese population on self-reported domestic egg handling and occurrence of illness from egg consumption, which were analysed in a Critical Consumer Handling (CCH) framework. Respondents (N = 927) reported behaviours associated with high risk of Salmonella infection, namely the frequent consumption of eggs from non-controlled sources (43%) and of dishes prepared with uncooked or lightly cooked eggs. Other risk related practices, from egg storage until consumption, were also found to be common. However, when buying eggs respondents value safety-related criteria above others – use-by date (highly valued by 72.8%), lack of cracks (72.2%) and cleanliness (48%). Association of eggs with Salmonella contamination was recognized by 65.8% of the respondents; 72.2% declared to have never been sick after eating eggs. In addition to global egg safety awareness messages, future campaigns should prioritize shifting consumers towards eggs with low probability of being contaminated and encouraging the use of pasteurized eggs, in particular when used in recipes that are not fully heat treated. Os cilios e flagelos são projeções celulares encontradas nas células eucariotas, são altamente conservados entre espécies e envolvidos na locomoção e movimentação de fluídos. A Discinésia Ciliar Primária (DCP) é uma doenca genética autossómica recessiva dos cílios móveis, que tem como consequência várias manifestações clínicas. Estima-se que a DCP afete ~1 em cada 10.000 pessoas, mas é mais prevalente em grupos com marcada consanguinidade. A DCP está associada até à data a mais de 40 genes causadores de doença. O diagnóstico da DCP envolve a combinação de vários testes, entre eles a microscopia electrónica (ME), teste determinante na classificação de anomalias ciliares. Neste trabalho foquei-me nos cílios móveis e em como se classificam as derivações à estrutura considerada normal. Este estudo levou ao desenvolvimento de feramentas e diretrizes que tornam o diagnóstico de DCP por EM mais estandardizado, informativo e fidedigno. A DCP necessita de ser modelada em organismos vertebrados como o ratinho, a rã e o peixe-zebra (PZ) para melhor conhecimento dos seus mecanismos moleculares. O PZ é um bom modelo de DCP porque apresenta diversos órgãos ciliados durante os estados larvares (cílios moveis e imoveis) e tem, até agora, homólogos de todos os genes causadores da doença humana. Desta forma a utilização de peixes mutantes tem sido um bom contributo para compreender esta doença humana. Neste trabalho investiguei por ME dois tipos de cílios móveis do PZ concluindo que estes apresentam semelhanças estruturais conservadas com os cílios móveis das vias aéreas do ser humano saudável e com DCP. Cilia and flagella are cellular protrusions found in eucaryotic cells, highly conserved between species and found in almost every cell type. Motile cilia are known for their motility properties and are involved in propelling and moving fluids. Primary ciliary dyskinesia (PCD) is an inherited autosomal-recessive disorder of motile cilia that results in several clinical manifestations. The estimated prevalence of PCD is ∼1 per 10,000 births, but it is more prevalent in populations where consanguinity is common, it is currently associated with mutations in more than 40 genes. To diagnose PCD it involves a combination of tests, in particular, electron microscopy (EM) that is essential for determining the type of ciliary ultrastructural defect. In this work I have focused on motile cilia ultrastructure and how the differences in cilia can be identified and classified, through the development of tools and guidelines to make the quantification and analysis of cilia more reliable and informative. The differential diagnosis of PCD is complex but crucial, and the development of new potential targeted treatments is essential. For better investigating the molecular mechanisms underlying PCD, it has been modelled in several organisms like mice, frogs and Zebrafish (ZF). ZF is a teleost vertebrate used in many areas of research, and a well-known animal model. ZF embryos develop quickly and allow unique advantages for research studies owing to their transparency during larval stages. ZF has many ciliated organs and presents primary cilia as well as motile cilia together with homologs for all the disease causing genes. The use of mutant zebrafish has been contributing to the better understanding of PCD molecular aetiology. Here, I investigated whether zebrafish cilia are ultrastructurally suitable for the study of PCD and concluded that the motile cilia of zebrafish resemble the cilia in the human airway in healthy conditions and in PCD.

BAT has been adapted for several countries, revealing promising validity evidence. This paper aims to present the psychometric properties of the Brazilian and Portuguese versions of the BAT in both the 23-item and 12-item versions. BAT’s validity evidence based on the internal structure (dimensionality, reliability, and measurement invariance) and validity evidence based on the relations to other variables are the focus of research. A cross-sectional study was conducted with two non-probabilistic convenience samples from two countries (N = 3103) one from Brazil (nBrazil = 2217) and one from Portugal (nPortugal= 886). BAT’s original structure was confirmed, and it achieved measurement invariance across countries. Using both classic test theory and item response theory as frameworks, the BAT presented good validity evidence based on the internal structure. Furthermore, the BAT showed good convergent evidence (i.e., work engagement, co-worker support, role clarity, work overload, and negative change). O regime jurídico da qualidade do ar e proteção da atmosfera dos Açores prevê a necessidade de encontrar soluções no sentido de harmonizar o desenvolvimento socioeconómico humano com a preservação dos padrões de excelência da qualidade do ar. Embora historicamente tenha sido um problema incipiente, os desafios contemporâneos colocados pela intensificação das atividades antropogénicas ou alterações climáticas requerem esforços adicionais dedicados à prevenção da declínio da qualidade do ar, por via do aumento das emissões de poluentes atmosféricos, conduzindo à degradação do património natural dos Açores e efeitos adversos sobre a saúde pública. Além disso, devido à origem vulcânica do arquipélago, emissões vulcanogénicas decorrem continuamente durante períodos de atividade quiescente, afetando particularmente as populações cronicamente expostas na proximidade de vulcões ativos. Assim, através do uso de líquenes como biomonitores, o objetivo geral desta tese foi afinar um conjunto de ferramentas para biomonitorizar a poluição do ar em cenários ambientais característicos da ilha de São Miguel (SMG), abrangendo tanto as emissões atmosféricas antropogénicas como vulcanogénicas originadas, respetivamente, pela intensificação sem precedentes das atividades humanas e pelas incessantes manifestações de vulcanismo ativo. O perfil elemental de largo espectro de líquenes foliosos nativos (de ocorrência natural) do género Parmotrema, amostrados ao longo do gradiente de uso do solo de SMG, revelou um padrão transversal de enriquecimento elemental em áreas agrícolas e sobretudo áreas artificiais em comparação com o fundo pristino de áreas florestais, refletindo a contaminação ambiental causada por emissões atmosféricas e exibindo o impacto da intensificação das atividades agrícolas e urbanas, particularmente no contexto da acrescida vulnerabilidade ambiental inerente aos ecossistemas de pequenas ilhas oceânicas. ABSTRACT: The legal regime concerning air quality and protection of the atmosphere in the Azores upholds the necessity of striving towards harmonizing human socioeconomic development with the preservation of excellent standards of air quality. Though historically a relatively incipient issue, contemporary challenges posed by intensifying anthropogenic activities or climate change require further efforts to address and prevent the decline of air quality, through increasing emissions of atmospheric pollutants, entailing the degradation of the natural patrimony of the Azores and adverse effects upon public health. Furthermore, owing to archipelago’s volcanic background, volcanogenic emissions continually occur during periods of quiescent activity, particularly affecting the populations chronically exposed in the proximity of active volcanoes. Hence, using lichens as biomonitors, the general aim of this thesis was to refine a set of tools to biomonitor air pollution in selected environmental scenarios of São Miguel island (SMG), addressing both anthropogenic and volcanogenic airborne emissions originating, respectively, from the unprecedented intensification of human activities as well as ongoing manifestations of active volcanism. The broad-spectrum elemental profile of naturally occurring (native) foliose Parmotrema lichens, sampled across the land use gradient of SMG, revealed a transversal pattern of significant elemental enrichment at agricultural and even more at artificial areas compared with the more pristine-like background of forest areas, thus tracing environmental contamination, through airborne emissions, displaying the impact of intensifying agricultural and urban activities, particularly in the context of the greater environmental vulnerability inherent to small oceanic island ecosystems. People across the world and throughout history have gone to great lengths to enhance their physical appearance. Evolutionary psychologists and ethologists have largely attempted to explain this phenomenon via mating preferences and strategies. Here, we test one of the most popular evolutionary hypotheses for beauty-enhancing behaviors, drawn from mating market and parasite stress perspectives, in a large cross-cultural sample. We also test hypotheses drawn from other influential and non-mutually exclusive theoretical frameworks, from biosocial role theory to a cultural media perspective. Survey data from 93,158 human participants across 93 countries provide evidence that behaviors such as applying makeup or using other cosmetics, hair grooming, clothing style, caring for body hygiene, and exercising or following a specific diet for the specific purpose of improving ones physical attractiveness, are universal. Indeed, 99% of participants reported spending >10 min a day performing beauty-enhancing behaviors. The results largely support evolutionary hypotheses: more time was spent enhancing beauty by women (almost 4 h a day, on average) than by men (3.6 h a day), by the youngest participants (and contrary to predictions, also the oldest), by those with a relatively more severe history of infectious diseases, and by participants currently dating compared to those in established relationships. The strongest predictor of attractiveness-enhancing behaviors was social media usage. Other predictors, in order of effect size, included adhering to traditional gender roles, residing in countries with less gender equality, considering oneself as highly attractive or, conversely, highly unattractive, TV watching time, higher socioeconomic status, right-wing political beliefs, a lower level of education, and personal individualistic attitudes. Planetary and human health depend on Westerners' ability to reduce meat consumption. Meat production degrades the environment while excessive meat intake is associated with cancer and cardiovascular disease, among others. Effective reasons and motivations are needed for consumers to change their diet. The fact that modern animal agriculture inflicts a great deal of pain on animals from their birth to their slaughter, animal welfare/suffering may drive consumers to meat curtailment. This systematic review examined a total of 92 papers to ascertain consumers’ awareness of the pain animals experience in animal agriculture, as well as consumer attitudes towards meat reduction due to animal welfare. Results show consumers have low awareness of animal agriculture. Awareness of animal agricultural practices and animal sentience is associated with increased negative attitudes towards animal suffering. Animal suffering due to farming practices, transportation, slaughter, and animal sentience is appealing for reducing meat consumption, and even dietary change in the short term. There is also evidence that animal suffering may be a more compelling motivation for consumers' willingness to change their diet than for health or environmental reasons. Therefore, increasing consumers’ awareness of animal suffering in meat production is paramount to contributing to reduced pressure on the environment and improved human health. info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersion

As áreas marinhas protegidas (MPAs) são ferramentas de conservação mundial utilizadas para reduzir actividades humanas com impacto no meio marinho. No entanto, desenvolvimentos recentes colocam a sua validade em causa. A necessidade de avaliar a sua eficácia requer novas abordagens. Aqui, eu utilizo comparações dentro:fora de actividades que apresentam impacto potencial sobre a biodiversidade (pesca, aquacultura, exploração do fundo e actividades de recreio). As actividades foram recolhidas recorrendo às regulamentações em vigor em cada zona. Proponho relacionar cada redução de usos observada com o nível de proteção atribuído à MPA; e pela primeira vez, classificar o nível de proteção das zonas imediatamente fora usando um sistema de classificação baseado nos regulamentos para as MPAs. Todas as MPAs portuguesas efectivamente reduziram actividades extractivas e não-extractivas; enquanto, algumas MPAs não providenciaram proteção extra do exterior. Apenas áreas totalmente protegidas e áreas altamente protegidas reduziram/restringiram actividades extractivas. No geral, as MPAs portuguesas mostraram reduções de usos semelhantes com áreas moderamente protegidas; das quais 17 não aumentaram o nível de proteção observado. Novas medidas de gestão e conservação são urgentemente necessárias. Marine protected areas (MPAs) are world conservation tools to reduce human activities impacting the marine environment. However, recent developments place its validity in check. The need to assess their effectiveness calls for new approaches. Here, I use inside:outside comparisons of activities that have a potential impact on biodiversity (fishing, aquaculture, bottom exploitation, and recreational uses). The activities were collected using the regulations in force in each zone. I propose to relate each reduction of uses to the level of protection assigned; and, for the first time to evaluate the level of protection of outside zones, using a recent regulation-based classification system for MPAs. All Portuguese MPAs effectively reduce non-extractive and extractive activities, whereas some MPAs do not provide extra protection from outside. Only fully protected areas and highly protected areas reduce/restrict extractive uses. Overall, Portuguese MPAs show a similar reduction to moderately protected areas; of which 17 did not increase the protection level observed outside. New management and conservation measures are urgently needed.

Com a sobre-exploração de populações selvagens de peixes ornamentais para alimentar o mercado da aquariofilia, as mesmas correm o risco de entrar em extinção. Instituições como o Oceanário de Lisboa têm investido em estudos que tentam recolher o máximo e informação sobre o ciclo de vida de peixes ornamentais, de modo a que se possam estabelecer protocolos de reprodução. Deste modo, com a criação em cativeiro de peixes ornamentais, evita-se o impacto negativo nas populações de peixe selvagem. Este estudo visa testar o uso de três tipos de alimento vivo, Rotíferos, Artémia e Copépodes, relacionando estes com a taxa de sobrevivência das larvas de Lythrypnus dalli, baseando-se no protocolo de reprodução criado anteriormente por Archembeault. A espécie de copépode usada foi diferente, sendo esta Acartia tonsa, podendo resultar em dados diferentes do trabalho referido. Foram também realizados registos fotográficos do desenvolvimento embrionário e larval, o que permitiu concluir que os mesmos resultados estavam a ser obtidos. Dos tipos de alimento usado, os copépodes mostraram ter um efeito significativo, que com o trabalho de Archembeault mais os registos fotográficos realizados, se confirma ser o melhor tipo de alimento vivo a usar para esta espécie. Palavras With the overexploitation of wild populations of ornamental fish to feed the aquarium market, they are in danger of becoming extinct. Institutions such as the Oceanário de Lisboa have invested in studies that try to collect as much information as possible about the life cycle of ornamental fish, so that reproduction protocols can be established. In this way, by having captive creations of ornamental fish, the negative impact on wild fish populations is avoided. This study aims to test the use of three types of live food, Rotifers, Brineshrimp and Copepods, relating these to the survival rate of Lythrypnus dalli larvae, based on the reproduction protocol previously created by Archembeault. The species of copepod used was different, these being Acartia tonsa, which may result in different data from the based work. Photographic records of embryonic and larval development were also carried out, in order to realize that the same results were being obtained. Of the types of food used, copepods were shown to have a significant effect, which after reviewing the work of Archembeault, plus the photographic records carried out, confirmed that copepods are the best type of live food to use for this species.

Dissertação de Mestrado apresentada no ISPA – Instituto Universitário para obtenção de grau de Mestre na especialidade de Biologia Marinha e Conservação A corvina (Argyrosumus regius) é um peixe vocal que utiliza o Estuário do Tejo, área com tráfego marinho intenso, como zona reprodutiva. Procurámos estudar o efeito da exposição a ruído de barco na sobrevivência e desenvolvimento de larvas, e no comportamento – nomeadamente aproximação e perseguição – de juvenis de corvina. Para tal, expusemos ovos e larvas a tratamentos de ruído (playback de ruído de barco) ou de controlo (bobines produzindo um campo eletromagnético semelhante ao gerado pelas colunas) e analisámos as suas características morfométricas à eclosão e dois dias depois da eclosão (dph). Os resultados mostraram que existe impacto do ruído na gestão das reservas energéticas das larvas, que aumentaram o consumo da gota lipídica sob este stressor. Verificou-se, ainda, um condicionamento do desenvolvimento das larvas apresentando, aos 2dph, uma altura máxima de corpo inferior quando expostas a ruído de embarcação. Expusemos, ainda, juvenis a condições de tratamento e de controlo semelhantes, durante 2 ou 7 dias, analisando o seu comportamento antes e depois da alimentação. O rácio de aproximação pós/pré alimentação diminuiu do dia 2 ao 7 no grupo de ruído, mas aumentou no controlo, sugerindo uma influência negativa do ruído na sua estimulação social. Implicações destes resultados em estádios mais avançados ainda não foram investigados. Importa salientar que estes peixes provêm de ambiente de aquacultura onde o ruído é superior ao do ambiente natural. Estudos complementares com corvina selvagem podem contribuir para aprofundar o conhecimento atual, ajudando a compreender o impacto do ruído antropogénico nos estádios inicias da corvina. Meagre (Argyrosumus regius) is a vocal fish that uses the Tagus estuary, an area with intense marine traffic, as breeding grounds. Here, we studied the effects of boat noise exposure on the development and survival of larvae, and on the behaviour – namely approach and pursuit – of meagre juveniles . We exposed eggs and larvae to either noise (boat noise playback) or control treatments (coils producing a similar electric field to the speakers) and analysed their morphometric characteristics at hatching and 2 days-post-hatching (dph). Our results showed an impact of boat noise playback on the management of energy reserves by meagre larvae, which increased their lipid droplet consumption when under this stressor. There was also a conditioning of their development illustrated by the smaller body depth achieved by larvae exposed to boat noise at 2 dph. We further exposed juveniles to similar treatment and control conditions and recorded their pre- and post-feeding behaviour after 2 and 7 days of exposure. Post/pre-feeding approach ratio decreased from day 2 to day 7 in the noise group but increased in the control, suggesting that the arousal or search behaviour with feeding is being affected by prolonged noise exposure. Whether these results have implications in later stages remains to be investigated. Also, tested fish were reared in an aquaculture facility, i.e. in a much noisier environment than the natural one. Further studies with wild meagre could help deepen this knowledge and give us a better understanding of how anthropogenic noise can impact meagre early stages.

The creation of the Landing Obligation (LO) was an important law introduced in the management and control of European fisheries, by aiming for more sustainable fisheries and promoting the bycatch reduction of species managed by quotas. Yet, a stock can be exempted from the LO if scientific studies support a high survivability to a given fishing gear. This means that with this exemption, based on high survivability, the bycatch of a stock if discarded can be delivered alive to the sea, promoting the recuperation of the stock. Currently, there is already a provisional exemption by high survival for most skate and ray species (Rajiformes) caught in European waters, yet the European Commission will only grant a definitive exemption of member states provide sufficient scientific evidence to support it. Therefore, the present study aims to gather scientific information on the survivability after capture of Rajiformes species caught in the polyvalent fleet operating with trammel nets off Peniche, central Portugal, which are the main fishing gears and area where Rajiformes are caught in mainland Portugal. For this study a holding tank with 1000 L was prepared for the individuals and weekly they were tested with CVA – Categorical Vitality Assessments, RAMP tests and lesion coverage. The results were utilized to evaluate discard survival for this two species, using a non-parametric Kaplan-Meier it was observed that R. brachyura species had 76% survival probability and R. montagui species had 54% survival probability, also it was observed that their vitality status influence the survival probability. As capturas assessorias ou by-catch são hoje um grande problema, afetando as populações marinhas que não são o objetivo foco da pesca mundial. A criação da Obrigação de Desembarque (LO) foi uma lei importante introduzida na gestão e controlo das pescas europeias, visando uma pescaria mais sustentável e promovendo a redução da pesca das espécies geridas por quotas. No entanto, uma população pode ser isenta da LO se os estudos científicos apoiarem uma elevada sobrevivência a uma determinada arte de pesca. Isto significa que com esta isenção de elevada sobrevivência os stocks capturados por by-catch e que apresentem elevada sobrevivencia, possam ser devolvidos ao mar vivos, permitindo uma recuperação deste mesmo stock. Atualmente, existe já uma isenção provisória por elevada sobrevivência para a maioria das espécies de raias (Rajiformes) capturadas em águas europeias, mas a Comissão Europeia apenas concederá uma isenção definitiva aos Estados-Membros se estes suportarem com evidências cientificas que justifiquem a mesma. Por isso, o presente estudo visa recolher informações científicas sobre a sobrevivência após a captura de espécies rajiformes capturadas pela frota polivalente que opera com redes de tresmalho ao largo de Peniche, no centro de Portugal, tanto a arte de pesca como a área portuguesa são os dois fatores que influenciam uma maior captura de Rajiformes em Portugal continental. Para este estudo, um tanque com 1000 L foi preparado para manter os indivíduos e semanalmente foram testados com CVA – Avaliações Categóricas de Vitalidade, testes RAMP e cobertura de lesões. Os resultados foram utilizados para avaliar a sobrevivência para esta duas espécies, usando uma teste não-parametrico Kaplan-Meier, foi possivel observar que as espécies de R. brachyura tinham 76% de probabilidade de sobrevivência e os individuos R. montagui tinham 54% de probabilidade de sobrevivência, também se observou que o seu estado de vitalidade influencia a probabilidade de sobrevivência.

O sucesso nesta fase é, então, modelado pela capacidade de escapar a predadores. A literatura sugere que o aumento da temperatura pode afetar a resposta de fuga e metabolismo, contudo poucos estudos têm focado na resposta aguda e potencial de aclimatação, através da plasticidade de desenvolvimento. Aqui, pretendemos avaliar os efeitos da exposição aguda e de longo prazo a temperaturas elevadas na resposta de fuga e taxas metabólicas padrão (SMR), nas fases iniciais de Diplodus sargus. Adicionalmente, como a disponibilidade alimentar pode modelar a resposta ao aquecimento, testámos os efeitos da exposição a temperatura elevada e indisponibilidade de alimento, como fatores individuais e em interação, na resposta de fuga e SMR. Os tratamentos de temperatura foram ajustados à temperatura ambiente (19°C) e elevada (22°C). Os tratamentos de alimentação foram estabelecidos como ad libitum e alimentação reduzida (50% do ad libitum). A resposta de fuga e SMR foram medidos após a temperatura elevada ser atingida (exposição aguda) e após 4 semanas (exposição a longo prazo). O aquecimento agudo teve um efeito significativo na resposta de fuga e aumentou ligeiramente a SMR. Contudo, a longo prazo, parece existir uma aclimatação da resposta de fuga e SMR. A indisponibilidade de alimento, ao interagir com a temperatura elevada, levou a um aumento da latência e redução da SMR, sugerindo que os peixes regulam as taxas metabólicas em função da disponibilidade alimentar. The end of the pelagic larval stage is a critical period in the life of fish, subject to high mortality rates, mostly due to predation. Success at this stage is then modulated by the ability to escape from predators. The literature suggests that an increase in temperature can affect escape response and fish metabolism, however few studies have focused on the acute sensitivity responses and the potential for acclimation through developmental plasticity. Here, we aimed at evaluating the acute and long-term effects of exposure to warming conditions on the escape response and Standard Metabolic Rates (SMR) of early life stages of the white seabream, Diplodus sargus. Additionally, as food availability may modulate the response to warming, we further tested the effects of long-term exposure to high temperature and food shortage, as individual and interacting drivers, on escape response and SMR. Temperature treatments were adjusted to ambient temperature (19°C), and a high temperature (22°C). Feeding treatments were established as ad libitum and short fed (50% of ad libitum). Escape response and SMR were measured after the high temperature was reached (acute exposure), and after 4-weeks (long-term exposure). Acute warming had a significant effect on escape response, and slightly increased SMR. In the long-term, however, there seems to be an acclimation of the escape response and SMR. Food shortage, interacting with high temperature, led to an increase in latency response and a significant reduction in SMR, which suggests that fish might regulate metabolic rates as a function of food availability.

A poluição marinha constitui um dos maiores problemas ambientais atuais que afeta principalmente os predadores de topo. A Pterodroma cahow é uma ave pelágica outrora considerada extinta. A monitorização populacional a longo prazo revelou, no passado, a suscetibilidade da freira-das-Bermudas à contaminação por poluentes orgânicos (p,p’-DDT e metabolitos) e, mais recentemente, o insucesso de eclosão entre os casais reprodutores. O presente estudo visa avaliar o impacto da variação das dimensões dos ovos, de macro e oligoelementos (essenciais e não essenciais) no sucesso de eclosão e averiguar a possível influência da exposição a poluentes orgânicos persistentes, através da sua relação à ecologia trófica e características individuais. Durante a época de reprodução de 2019, foram recolhidas 36 cascas de ovos e amostras de sangue de 25% de indivíduos reprodutores. O estudo consta que cerca de 27% dos ovos não eclodidos pode dever-se à exposição de contaminantes. A variabilidade observada nas dimensões dos ovos não sugere qualquer relação com a probabilidade de eclosão. Observou-se a mobilização do macroelemento potássio e do oligoelemento essencial ferro das cascas de ovos durante o desenvolvimento embrionário, sugerindo que as mesmas podem funcionar como reserva. Os indivíduos com maior massa corporal apresentaram menores concentrações de p,p’-DDE, ΣPCBs e ΣOCPs, sugerindo o efeito de diluição. Houve uma relação negativa entre as concentrações de ΣPCBs e os níveis de δ15N. Apesar das concentrações de p,p’-DDE, ΣPCBs e ΣOCPs terem sido relativamente baixas, indivíduos com maiores concentrações estão suscetíveis a um menor sucesso reprodutor, sendo a probabilidade de eclosão menor. Marine pollution is among the biggest environmental problems of today that mostly affects marine top-predators. The Pterodroma cahow is a pelagic seabird once considered extinct. The long-term population monitoring revealed, in the past, the Bermuda petrel’s susceptibility to contamination by organic pollutants (p,p’-DDT and metabolites) while, more recently, it reported the hatching failure of a consistent number of breeding pairs. This study aims at evaluating the impact of variation in egg size, as well as macro- and trace element concentrations (essential and non-essential) on the hatching success and to investigate the possible exposure to persistent organic pollutants, through its relationship with the trophic ecology and individual characteristics. During the breeding season 2019, 36 eggshells and blood samples from 25% of breeding birds were collected and analyzed. The findings showed that the fate of 27% of failed eggs could be related to the exposure to contaminants. The variability observed in egg characteristics do not suggest any relationship with the hatching success. Mobilization from the eggshells of the macro elements potassium and essential trace element iron during the embryonic development suggested that the eggshell can represent a reserve of elements for the embryo. The negative relationship between individual body mass and p,p’-DDE, ΣPCBs and ΣOCPs concentrations suggest the occurrence of a dilution effect. There was a negative relationship between ΣPCBs concentrations and δ15N levels. Although the concentrations of p,p’-DDE, ΣPCBs and ΣOCPs were relatively low, individuals with higher contaminant burden showed a lower reproductive success, being the hatchability of their eggs lower.

O enriquecimento ambiental tem sido muito utilizado em zoos com o intuito de melhorar as condições de bem-estar animal, fornecendo estímulos que respondem às necessidades dos animais, permitindo comportamentos típicos da espécie. Neste estudo é abordado o efeito da implementação de diferentes tipos de enriquecimento num grupo de íbis-escarlate do Zoomarine, Algarve. Para tal, seguiu-se o desenho experimental do tipo ABA, consistindo numa primeira fase de baseline (apenas estudo comportamental), seguida de uma fase de estudo comportamental com enriquecimento (aplicando 4 tipos de enriquecimentos, físico, alimentar, sensorial e táctil, individualmente), e um pós-enriquecimento (estudo comportamental sem enriquecimento). No final procedeu-se a um estudo do comportamento com todos os enriquecimentos em simultâneo (pós-enriquecimento com enriquecimento). A comparação entre contextos revelou que, dos comportamentos analisados, existiu uma semelhança de 50% nos comportamentos exibidos no baseline e no pós-enriquecimento sem enriquecimento, o que sugere que após retirados os enriquecimentos os animais voltam aos seus comportamentos iniciais. Verificou-se ainda que cada tipo de enriquecimento teve um efeito diferente no tipo de comportamentos observados. O enriquecimento físico teve maior influência no preening, exploration e foraging; o nutricional na maintenance e manipulation/play; o sensorial no attentive behaviour e resting; e o enriquecimento táctil no resting, exploration e stationary. O comportamento exploratório surgiu associado à presença de enriquecimento físico, nutricional e táctil, sendo despertado apenas quando aplicado um estímulo novo. No entanto, devido à curta duração do estudo, torna-se também importante verificar se as conclusões obtidas não resultam apenas de um “efeito novidade”. Environmental enrichment has been increasingly used in zoos to improve animal welfare conditions, providing stimuli that respond to the needs of animals, allowing typical behaviours of a species. This study addresses the effect of implementing different types of enrichment in a group of scarlet ibises from Zoomarine, Algarve. For this purpose, the study followed an ABA-type behavioural experimental design, consisting of a first baseline phase (just behavioural study), followed by a phase with enrichment (applying 4 types of enrichment, physical, nutritional, sensory and tactile, individually), and a phase post-enrichment (without enrichment). In the end, a behavioural study with all enrichments simultaneously was also performed (post enrichment with enrichment). The comparison between contexts revealed that of the behaviours analysed, there was a 50% similarity in the behaviours exhibited in the baseline and in post-enrichment without enrichment, suggesting that after the enrichments removal, the animals returned to their initial behaviours. It was also found that each type of enrichment seemed to have a different effect on the type of behaviour observed. Physical enrichment had the greatest influence on preening, exploration and foraging; nutritional enrichment in maintenance and manipulation/play; sensory enrichment in attentive behaviour and resting; and tactile enrichment in resting, exploration and stationary. Exploratory behaviour was only associated with the presence of enrichment (physical, nutritional and tactile), being triggered when a new stimulus is applied. However, due to the short duration of the study, it is also important to verify whether the conclusions obtained are not just the result of a “novelty effect”.

Tornou-se numa excelente espécie modelo para vários estudos por possuir grande variação na utilização de recursos e a nível morfológico dentro das mesmas populações e entre populações. O esgana-gata é uma espécies que evolui rapidamente e por isso é de esperar que as populações destes organismos respondam rapidamente às alterações climáticas. O estudo da sua morfologia poderá ser um fator essencial para a sua conservação no sentido de entender como estas espécies estão a responder às alterações no seus habitas. Analisámos as variações morfológicas de populações de esgana-gata de vários lagos em 4 países distintos, Escócia, Islândia, Canadá e Alasca, que apresentam características ambientais diferentes com o intuito de entender qual o grau de variabilidade morfológica do esgana-gata ao longo da sua área de distribuição e se esta é maior a nível regional (entre países), ou local (entre os lagos). Analisou-se um total de 2763 indivíduos relativamente à forma do corpo e analisaram-se 9 variáveis morfométricas para os mesmos indivíduos. Identificaram-se dois tipos morfológicos pertencentes ao continente americano e ao continente europeu. Encontraram-se mais diferenças relacionadas com a morfometria dos indivíduos do que relacionas com a sua forma do corpo sobretudo entre países. Em termos de análises entre lagos, dentro de cada país, verificou-se uma grande variabilidade das variáveis complementares e praticamente não se obteve diferenças relativas à forma do corpo. Deste modo, os nossos resultados sugerem que a forma global do corpo de esgana-gata poderá estar a responder de forma mais acentuada a variações de larga escala, ao longo da sua distribuição e menos às características especificas do habitat. Three-spined Stickleback is a species whose global distribution occurs throughout the northern hemisphere. It has become an excellent model species for several studies as it has great variation in resource use and morphology within and between populations. The stickleback is a species that evolves quickly and therefore it is expected that populations of these organisms respond quickly to climate change. The study of their morphology can be an essential factor for their conservation in the sense of how these species are responding to changes in their habitats. We analyzed the morphological variations of stickleback populations from several lakes in 4 different countries, Scotland, Iceland, Canada and Alaska, which have different environmental characteristics in order to sense the degree of morphological variability of the stickleback throughout its distribution area and whether this is the highest regional (among countries) or local (among lakes) level. A total of 2,763 were analyzed regarding body shape and 9 morphometric variables were analyzed for the same individuals. Two morphological types belonging to the American continent and the European continent were identified. More differences were found related to the morphometry of the necessary than related to their body shape, especially between countries. In terms of analyzes between lakes, within each country, there was great variability in the complementary variables and practically no difference was obtained regarding the shape of the body. Thus, our results obtained that an overall shape of the stickleback body may be responding more strongly to large-scale variations, along its distribution and less to the specific characteristics of the habitat.

Esta técnica é usada de forma que possam ser recolhidas amostras de tecidos orgânicos que são posteriormente utilizados em análises genéticas. Estas análises fornecem um ponto de vista muito valioso em termos de conservação de espécies uma vez que permitem obter conhecimento de dinâmica de populações. O peixe-zebra (Danio rerio) é um pequeno teleósteo comummente usado num número considerável de laboratórios um pouco por todo o mundo. É usado principalmente como uma espécie modelo em áreas ligadas à biologia como as ciências biomédicas, a genética e a biologia do desenvolvimento. O objetivo do presente trabalho é a utilização do peixe zebra de forma a estudar os possíveis impactos que o corte da barbatana possa ter nos padrões de movimento e natação dos peixes. Para isso foram cortadas quatro barbatanas, a dorsal, peitoral direita, caudal superior e caudal inferior, uma em cada contexto. Foi criado um algoritmo em MATLAB de forma a poder ser realizado video-tracking em vídeos pré (baseline) e pós corte. Os dados obtidos foram depois analisados com o auxílio do SPSS. Os resultados indicam que houve diferenças significativas em três pares distintos: pré e pós controlo (onde nenhuma barbatana foi cortada), pré e pós barbatana peitoral direita e pré e pós barbatana caudal superior. O presente trabalho demonstrou que o peixe-zebra, uma espécie modelo muito reconhecida, pode ser uma ferramenta valiosa para a biologia da conservação. Sendo assim, podem ser desenvolvidos e aplicados protocolos em contexto laboratorial antes de serem aplicados in situ. Isto permitiria que os resultados de estudos futuros fossem mais robustos e que espécies em risco de extinção fossem protegidas. Fin clipping is a widely used technique used to collect biological samples that are valuable in various contexts like conservation biology. It makes it possible to extract samples of tissue which are then used in genetic sampling. These analyses allow for a more thorough understanding of certain population dynamics concepts. The zebrafish (Danio rerio) is a small cyprinoid teleost that is extensively used in laboratories around the world as a model organism in various fields of biology, like genetics, biomedical sciences and developmental biology. The objective of the present work is to use the zebrafish as a model organism in an effort to gain some insight into what impacts fin clipping might have on movement and swimming patterns. Four different fins were cut, one in each context: Dorsal fin; Right pectoral fin; Superior caudal fin; and inferior caudal fin. A MATLAB algorithm was created so that video-trackingcould be performed in videos recorded before and after each fin was cut. Gathered data was then analysed using SPSS. The results indicate that there were significant differences between three of the studied pairs: pre and post control (no fin was cut), pre and post right pectoral fin cut, and pre and post superior caudal fin cut. The present work showed that zebrafish, a widely recognized biological model species in other areas, can be a valuable asset to conservation biology. This means that protocols may be created and applied in a laboratory setting using Danio rerio before applied in situ, thus bettering the outcome of future studies and experiments, while also protecting endangered species.

Sponges (Phylum Porifera) are grouped into four classes with Demospongiae being the largest and most diverse. The habitats composed of deep-sea sponges are considered biodiversity hotspots, being part of the benthic communities where they play a very important role in the ecosystem. These are, however, considered vulnerable marine ecosystems (VMEs) of conservation priority. This study aimed to identify, by means of DNA barcoding, deep-sea sponges collected in an understudied area of the Northeast Atlantic, Selvagens Islands. Eighteen specimens collected in the EMEPC/M@rBis/Selvagens2010 campaign were analyzed. Of these, eight specimens were identified and assigned to five genera - Axinella, Topsentia, Characella, Petrosia and Calyx - representing five families (Axinellidae, Halichondriidae, Pachastrellidae, Petrosiidae, Phloeodictyidae) on the basis of their COI mtDNA and 28S rRNA barcodes. We further discuss the phylogenetic and biogeographic affinities of the identified taxa in light of the sponge fauna of the Northeast Atlantic and Mediterranean. The data generated will be further complemented with morphological characterization to allow accurate species-level identifications. This integrative approach is fundamental to understand the diversity and distribution of deep-sea species and contribute to their conservation. As esponjas (Filo Porifera) estão agrupadas em quatro classes, sendo a Demospongiae a maior e mais diversificada. Os habitats compostos por esponjas de profundidade são considerados hotspots de biodiversidade, sendo parte das comunidades bentónicas onde desempenham um papel muito importante no ecossistema. Estes são, no entanto, considerados ecossistemas marinhos vulneráveis (VMEs) de prioridade de conservação. O objetivo neste trabalho foi identificar, através de códigos de barras de ADN, esponjas de profundidade recolhidas numa área sub estudada do Atlântico Nordeste, as Ilhas Selvagens. Foram analisados dezoito espécimes recolhidos na campanha EMEPC/M@rBis/Selvagens2010. Destes, oito espécimes foram identificados e atribuídos a cinco géneros - Axinella, Topsentia, Characella, Petrosia e Calyx - representando cinco famílias (Axinellidae, Halichondriidae, Pachastrellidae, Petrosiidae, Phloeodictyidae) com base nos seus códigos de barras COI mtDNA e 28S rRNA. Discutimos ainda as afinidades filogenéticas e biogeográficas dos taxa identificados, à luz da fauna de esponjas do Atlântico Nordeste e do Mediterrâneo. Os dados gerados serão ainda complementados com a caracterização morfológica para permitir identificações precisas ao nível das espécies. Esta abordagem integrativa é fundamental para compreender a diversidade e distribuição das espécies de águas profundas e contribuir para a sua conservação.

Although there is evidence that pets may help individuals who are facing significant daily stressors, little is known about the benefits of pet-friendly practices for their owners’ well-being. Based on the social exchange theory and on the Rusbult investment model, we argue that organizational pet-friendly practices will be viewed as a source of support from an organization that increases workers’ organizational identification, which in turn will lead to higher levels of psychological well-being and life satisfaction. For this study, 208 working adults answered an online questionnaire. Results from the study showed that the more pet-friendly practices the higher the workers’ organizational identification, which led to higher indices of psychological well-being and life satisfaction. This study contributes to a better understanding of the human–animal interaction and how pets can function as a resource for individuals’ well-being at work. info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersion

Mestrado (Trabalho de Projeto), Ambiente, Saúde e Segurança, 2 de dezembro de 2021, Universidade dos Açores. Anualmente, chegam aos oceanos de todo o mundo cerca de 6,4 milhões de toneladas de lixo. Os sectores do turismo e das pescas, têm vindo a manifestar uma preocupação crescente perante esta problemática, promovendo algumas ações no sentido de minimizar o lixo marinho, os Açores não são exceção. Neste sentido, este projeto tem como finalidade a elaboração de um guia de boas práticas na Região Autónoma dos Açores, direcionado a atividades marítimas realizadas em embarcações de pequeno calado na região. A conceção deste guia teve por base uma consulta prévia dos seus potenciais utilizadores através de um inquérito respondido online. Modelado para guia de bolso, este manual está dividido em essencialmente duas secções, a pesca artesanal e as atividades marítimo-turísticas. O guia aborda o impacto do lixo marinho nos oceanos, através de informação fornecida sob a forma de texto, imagens e frases impactantes sobre o mesmo, alertando para os perigos para a biodiversidade marinha, para a saúde humana e ambiental. Acresce ainda de recomendações gerais para a população com a finalidade de reciclar e minimizar o lixo produzido. Neste sentido, o objetivo passa por alertar os setores alvos das consequências do lixo marinho, sensibilizando-os para a implementação de boas práticas aquando da utilização do mar. ABSTRACT: Every year, about 6.4 million tons of rubbish reach the world's oceans. The tourism and fisheries sectors have been showing a growing concern about this problem, promoting some actions to minimize the marine litter, the Azores are no exception. In this sense, this project aims to elaborate a guide of good practices in the Autonomous Region of the Azores, directed to maritime activities carried out in small boats in the region. The conception of this guide was based on a previous consultation of its potential users through a survey answered online. Designed as a pocket guide, this manual is essentially divided into two sections, artisanal fisheries, and maritime-tourism activities. The guide addresses the impacts of marine litter in the oceans, through information provided in the form of text, images and impactful phrases about it, warning of the dangers to marine biodiversity, human and environmental health. It also provides general recommendations for the population to recycle and minimize the waste produced. In this sense, the aim is to alert the target sectors to the consequences of marine litter, making them aware of the implementation of good practices when using the ocean.

However, research examining sex ratio and human mating is limited in scope. Prior work has examined the relationship between sex ratio and desire for short-term, uncommitted mating as well as outcomes such as marriage and divorce rates. Less empirical attention has been directed towards the relationship between sex ratio and mate preferences, despite the importance of mate preferences in the human mating literature. To address this gap, we examined sex ratio’s relationship to the variation in preferences for attractiveness, resources, kindness, intelligence and health in a long-term mate across 45 countries (n = 14 487). We predicted that mate preferences would vary according to relative power of choice on the mating market, with increased power derived from having relatively few competitors and numerous potential mates. We found that each sex tended to report more demanding preferences for attractiveness and resources where the opposite sex was abundant, compared to where the opposite sex was scarce. Na Região Autónoma dos Açores, a Direção Regional dos Recursos Florestais é responsável pela produção em massa de plantas endémicas da Macaronésia com a finalidade de restaurar habitats naturais. No entanto, as plantas produzidas nos viveiros florestais são negativamente impactadas pela presença de afídeos. Os afídeos (Hemiptera: Aphididae) são, do ponto de vista fitossanitário, dos mais importantes problemas, dado que são capazes de afetar sistemas florestais e agrícolas, pois vivem em colónias de elevadas densidades, infligindo aos seus hospedeiros diversos efeitos, quer diretos quer indiretos. Com este estudo pretendemos contribuir, para o controlo biológico daquelas populações, avaliaando até que ponto as interações bióticas entre Scymnus nubilus (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) e Aphidius colemani Viereck (Hymenoptera: Braconidae), numa estratégia de largadas multiespecíficas, poderão gerar impacto positivos, ou negativos, no controlo de populações de afídeos, em particular sobre Myzus persicae Sulzer como modelo biológico. Assim, foram realizados trabalhos laboratoriais para avaliar (i) o efeito das interações bióticas entre fêmeas adultas de A. colemani e o 4º instar larvar de S. nubilus e (ii) a preferência alimentar do 4º instar larvar de S. nubilus entre afídeos parasitados vs não parasitados. Os nossos resultados indicam que S. nubilus poder-se-á constituir como um eficiente agente de controlo biológico, especialmente em tratamentos conspecíficos, dado que a larva consome em média 50 ninfas de M. persicae em 24h. Nos testes interespecíficos verificou-se que S. nubilus interfere com o nível de parasitismo e demonstrou consumir afídeos parasitados e/ou interferência na atividade parasitária. Nos testes de preferência alimentar de S. nubilus, este demonstrou uma preferência tendencial por afídeos parasitados, o que pode dever-se à menor mobilidade e capacidade de defesa dos afídeos parasitados. Será importante num futuro próximo estudar estas interações em condições de campo. ABSTRACT: In the Azores, the Regional Directorate for Forestry Resources is responsible for the mass production of Macaronesia endemic plants in nurseries conditions, which are later, used in restoration programs of native forestery habitats. However, almost of the plants species in the nurseries are heavily infested by aphid species affecting negatively their hosts. The aphids (Hemiptera: Aphididae), from the phytosanitary point of view, major problem, capable of affecting forest and agricultural systems because they live in colonies densely populated, inflicting direct and direct and indirect damages on their hosts. With this study, we intend to explore the extent to which it is possible to implement a program of biological control to control aphid’s populations under a multi-specific release of two biological control agents, and using Myzus persicae Sulzer as target model. To this purpose, we evaluate the effects of biotic interactions between Scymnus nubilus (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) and Aphidius colemani Viereck (Hymenoptera: Braconidae). This study has two major objectives; to assess (i) the effect of biotic interactions in intraspecific and interspecific treatments with 4th larval stage of S. nubilus and females of A. colemani and (ii) feeding preference of parasitized and non-parasitized aphids of M. persicae by 4th larval instar S. nubilus. Our results indicate that S. nubilus may be a suitable biological control agent, especially in conspecific treatments with two predators and a prey density of 80 aphis per larvae, once they consumed on average 50 nymph of M. persicae in 24h. In heterospecific tests, it was found that S. nubilus interferes with the level of parasitism and has shown to consume parasitized aphids and / or interfere with parasitic activity. In the food preference tests of S. nubilus, we showed a tendency towards parasitized aphids, which may be due to the lesser mobility and defense capacity of the parasitized aphids.
