The article discusses a study by Omer C. Stewart, an anthropologist, on the ecological importance of the use of fire on vegetation by Aboriginal community in Canada. Topics include the challenges in understanding ancient fires' role on vegetation, the conflict between religion and science, and ecologists' failure to use ethnographic studies about rejection of folklore.

The role of Indigenous methodologies has become increasingly common among scholars. In Anishnawbe societies, the term adisokan is used to describe the role of storytelling. Traditional storytellers would travel between communities and pass along vital information through songs and stories. Consider the role of the scholar as an adisokan, sharing critical knowledge between communities on issues that affect those communities. Nanabush storytelling is one such way of sharing. Nanabush is a celebrated figure in Anishnawbe culture and folklore, a trickster figure who is, according to Anishnawbe legal scholar John Borrows, part of a tradition of intellect that teaches us about partial and incomplete ideas. This paper explores how a Nanabush story was used, in the tradition of an adisokan, as a culturally-specific and community-relevant analytic tool for the communities on Manitoulin Island. This article explores the myth of origin of Newfoundland in the novel "Gaff Topsails" by Patrick Kavanagh. The novel illustrates a myth of origin for the inhabitants of a small, fictional Catholic parish in Newfoundland. It also reconfigures the colonial moment as a myth of indigenous birth. The author believes that the myth is an attempt of Kavanagh to write a national narrative of Newfoundland and serves to distance Newfoundlanders both from colonial exploiters and from the Canadian identity. Kavanagh uses mythical images to put his characters in a different narrative mode from historical accounts of later colonial exploration and discovery.

The article features Edith Fowke, researcher of Canadian folk songs and folklore, and examines her paradoxical relation to Canadian folklore/ethnology studies. Fowke as born in 1913 in Lumsden, Saskatchewan. The author cites instances wherein Fowke reveals seeming contradictions in her beliefs and actions including her allegedly being radical in political beliefs but generally conservative in her academic studies.

The article discusses the highlights of the 2002 Canadian Society for Traditional Music (CSTM) Conference, which was held in St. John's, Newfoundland, Canada from November 2 to 3, 2002. Marcel Bénéteau discussed a brief presentation on the Centre franco-ontarien de folklore in Suddbury, which was followed by the traditional music making session during the Saturday night of the event. The second day of the event saw the annual general meeting of the society in which it passed several motions and elected a new set of officers and directors.

The article highlights the Memorial University of Newfoundland Folklore and Language Archive, which has the largest collection of recorded and collected items of Newfoundland and Labrador folklore in Canada. The archive has a collection of some 40,000 audio recordings, 16,000 manuscripts and 4,000 commercial discs and other cultural artifacts and media, which are mostly concentrated to song and music. The archive also houses national and international pieces, which includes studies from Prince Edward Island and recordings from Yugoslavia.

The article discusses the highlights of the annual conference of the Folklore Studies Association of Canada held at the Laurentian University in May 2002. The Friday night banquet had an open mike, hosted by Marcel Bénéteau who opened and closed the program with the vieilles chansons du Détroit. Some of the presentations include Anita Best who sang a Newfoundland song "Tickle Cove Pond," Shelly Posent accompanied by Neil Rosenberg's mandolin and Mike Ballantyne's performance of "To Be A Farmer's Boy."
