Abstract

This paper reflects on the concept of English Medium Instruction, a growing activity at Spanish universities and a consequence of the European Higher Education Area, the internationalization of universities and the gradual interest in the different CLIL (Content and Language Integrated Learning) models. The forces behind CLIL are presented along with the benefits for institutions and practitioners involved. Special attention is given to methodological implications with the purpose of demystifying the belief that English language competence is the only requisite and benefit of bilingual programs. The paper offers an overview of the spread of this practice in Spanish Universities as well as references to sources for further information. Another section presents some of the aspects related to the implementation of bilingual programs, mainly those referring to planning. Teacher education, competences required and linguistic needs are dealt with in the final section. The main contribution of the article could be some indications for trainers or for those who may undertake autonomous training to teach through English. The paper points at three areas from which knowledge about the linguistic needs can be obtained. Abstract

The article presents a case study of a 32 year old woman with erythematopapular lesions in the perianal area and intergluteal folds, after several days application of Ruscus-Llorens ointment for haemorrhoids. According to the report, the patient received oral and intramuscular prednisolone, with improvement of her lesions in 20 days. Moreover, the patient suffered 3 similar previous episodes without known cause.

Abstract

A communication situation consists of a coalitional game and a graph, the nodes of the graph corresponding to the players of the game. To calculate the Myerson value for such situations, we obtain results which extend those well known for trees and cycle-complete graphs. On the other hand, in order to reduce the associated calculus for communication situations with a pure overhead game, the possibility of splitting the graph in several subgraphs is analyzed. Abstract

Researchers analyzed blood from 34 HIV-positive subjects (27 men and 7 women aged 21-40 years) to determine serum glucose chemistry profile total hemoglobin glycosylated hemoglobin and CD4+ count. The next day they obtained serum ferritin levels in a subgroup of 11 randomly selected patients. Findings were submitted to linear and multiple regression analysis and the relationships between glycosylated hemoglobin and CD4+ count and between the levels of glycosylated hemoglobin and ferritin were expressed using Pearsons correlation coefficient. Chi-square analysis was used to compare groups for proportions. None of the subjects had hyperglycemia diabetes iron-deficiency anemia or drug-induced hyperglycemia. In all cases fasting plasma glucose concentrations were normal. The mean total hemoglobin was 12.6 +or- 1.3 gm/dl; mean glycosylated hemoglobin concentrations were abnormally high corresponded negatively with CD4+ count (r = -0.4 p < 0.05) and were related to the clinical stage of AIDS (P = 0.02). The sub-group showed a positive correlation between serum ferritin levels and glycosylated hemoglobin concentration (r = 0.79 p < 0.01). In the absence of pathogenetic causes for increased glycosylation of hemoglobin in the HIV-infected patients this phenomenon may be caused by an unknown factor in the serum which increases the affinity of red blood cells to circulating normal glucose concentration. Further research is needed to determine if this factor is iron.

Abstract

Anisakis simplex, a parasite of fish and cephalopods, can induce IgE-mediated reactions. This study aimed to determine the etiologic role of A. simplex in patients affected by urticaria/angioedema (AE) or anaphylaxis. We studied 100 adult subjects suffering acute episodes of urticaria/AE, by anamnesis, prick tests with A. simplex and fish-mix extracts, and total and specific IgE to both A. simplex and cod. The following criteria of A. simplex allergy were considered: 1) urticaria/AE within 6 h after fish ingestion; 2) specific IgE to A. simplex; 3) positive prick test to A. simplex extract; 4) exclusion of other suspected causes. Double-blind, placebo-controlled food challenge was not carried out because ethical considerations forbid challenge with a parasite. Specific IgE to A. simplex (> 0.7 kU/l) was found in 22 subjects, but only eight were diagnosed as having A. simplex allergy. Other allergens were involved in 37 patients, and 55 cases were considered idiopathic. Specific IgE to fish (> 0.7 kU/l) was found in two patients, but only one was diagnosed as having fish allergy. We concluded that A. simplex is an important etiologic factor in acute urticaria. We suggest that it should be considered in cases of urticaria/AE or anaphylaxis, especially after fish ingestion. Abstract

Anaphylactic reactions after parasitized fish consumption are mediated by an IgE response. However, positive skin tests and specific IgE can also be found in many asymptomatic subjects who recognize a single medium-mol.-wt. antigen by IgE immunoblot. The study aimed to find out whether this unspecificity was due to the carbohydrate moieties of parasite antigens. Sixty-two patients with suspected parasite allergy, 51 blood donors, 18 bakers, and 38 atopic patients were studied by blotting. Parasite proteins were treated with periodate. Several selected sera were inhibited with a crude wheat extract and fungal amylase. Twelve patients (19%), eight donors (16%), six bakers (33%), and one atopic patient (3%) recognized a single medium-mol.-wt. band in blotting and should be considered false-positive. This band was periodate-sensitive, but specific IgE to this allergen could not be inhibited by a wheat extract nor by fungal amylase and was clinically irrelevant. Diagnosis of Anisakis simplex hypersensitivity by skin tests and/ or specific IgE values should always be confirmed by specific IgE immunoblotting in order to detect the presence of clinically unrelated antibodies directed to periodate-sensitive allergens. 172. Evaluation of gassolids mixing chamber through cross correlation and Hursts analysis

Abstract

Fast circulating fluidizedbed reactors are used for many applications, both in riser and downer modes. Typical resisdence times are in the order of a few hundreds of milliseconds. A good understanding of initial gassolids contact must be reached to realize the full potential of such reactors. Effective and stable gassolids mixing chambers were identified from the singals of simple and robust probes, which could be used in industrial and pilot plants. Criteria based on cross correlation or Hurst analysis provided consistent results. Although this study used simplified momentum probes, the criteria it developed can be applied to the signal of any fastresponse sensor which is affected by local hydrodynamics. Temperature, capacitance, ultrasonic, or γray absorption measurements could be used. Gas or liquidliquid mixing chambers could also be optimized with the same criteria.

Abstract

Our goal was to estimate the occurrence rate of the post-initial remission and its relation with HLA phenotype in type I diabetics (DMI). We studied 50 type I diabetics, 22 women and 28 men, with an average age at the onset of the disease to 15.8 +/- years (range 3-30 years). All patients were conventionally treated with insulin therapy, diet and regular exercise. Six (12%) of the diabetics presented a complete remission during 57.3 +/- 46 weeks, whereas fifteen (30%) patients presented partial remission during 20.1 +/- weeks. No significant differences were observed with regard to age at the onset of the disease, sex, BMI, initial ketoacidosis and stage of gonadal development between those diabetics presenting remission and those who did not presented so. We observed a higher incidence of the HLA-DR4 antigen among diabetics with remission (complete and partial, 61.9%), compared with patients without remission (20%, p less than 0.5). In conclusion, our results support the findings suggesting the presence of a clinical-immunological heterogenicity in DMI, genetically determined and linked to the HLA system.

Abstract

Cuando hablamos de Serious Games nos referimos a juegos cuyo objetivo va más allá del puro entretenimiento, entroncando con el ámbito de la formación y educación, ya que en algunos casos son diseñados para cambiar comportamientos inadecuados de los niños. Este es el caso del proyecto eConfidence (nr: 732420), financiado por la Unión europea y orientado a analizar los posibles beneficios de los Serious Games en el cambio de comportamiento y actitudes de alumnos adolescentes ante situaciones como el bullying o el uso seguro de Internet en los adolescentes. Para conocer la calidad de este tipo de juegos y valorar la incidencia de los mismos en el cambio de comportamientos se deben especificar y concretar los indicadores para su análisis. Nos enfrentamos a una tarea ardua y compleja en la que diseñadores informáticos y educadores deben acordar unas métricas específicas que sean capaces de aportar datos para concluir si los objetivos educativos del juego se cumplen, además de asegurar la retención de usuarios y la monetización para la empresa diseñadora del juego. En este texto se exponen las métricas que se han identificado en el proyecto eConfidence como ejemplo de diseño de métricas para futuros proyectos de investigación que utilicen los Serious Games como medio para alcanzar objetivos educativos.

Abstract

The benefits of incorporating digital games into the educational environment are not exclusively motivational. A school environment enriched with the features of games can allow students to develop their own pace through individual feedback, in addition to strengthening skills such as problem-solving, collaboration and communication. In order to contribute to the research in the field of Serious Games in education we are working on the eConfidence project. This project includes the analysis of the benefits of two serious games in the change of behavior and attitudes in teenagers, towards the safe use of the Internet and the dangers of bullying. eConfidence is a 24 months project that started in November 2016 and has received funding from the European Union's Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme (ref. No732420). In this paper, we will contextualize the project with a theoretical review about serious games, benefits of games, 181 experiments using serious games in education, and issues about bullying and the safe use of the Internet. Then, we will explain the features of the project and its possible contributions in the field of education.

With this purpose, eConfidence project is launched, funded by the European Union and whose objective is the analysis of the potential benefits of the use of Serious Games in learning, and behaviour changes in teenagers when they face different conflictive situations. In this chapter, our intention is to deepen in the quality and efficacy of this kind of games with an educative approach, developing, this way, a theoretical framework to the Serious Games in education. Subsequently, we will specify and concrete some of the metrics defined for one of the games in the eConfidence project.

Con este proyecto se busca comprobar una metodología de desarrollo de serious games para promover el cambio de comportamiento en el usuario, probándolo específicamente con el desarrollo de dos serious games, uno sobre uso seguro de Internet y otro sobre bullying, dirigidos a adolescentes. Para su desarrollo, los educadores participan en varias fases, como la revisión de literatura sobre los contenidos de los juegos, definición de métricas educativas o aplicación de prueba piloto en centros escolares. En el texto se presenta un marco teórico sobre ambos constructos (bullying y uso seguro de Internet) y sobre videojuegos y serious games en educación. Posteriormente, se indican los objetivos, las cuestiones metodológicas, los procesos que se están llevando a cabo, los instrumentos, y los participantes y fuentes de información utilizados. Finalmente, se señalan algunos de los resultados generados hasta el momento y conclusiones a las que se ha llegado en base a la situación actual del proyecto, todo ello desde el punto de vista educativo.

193. Whole-exome sequencing identifies novel compound heterozygous mutations in USH2A in Spanish patients with autosomal recessive retinitis pigmentosa

Abstract

Purpose: Retinitis pigmentosa (RP) is an inherited retinal dystrophy characterized by extreme genetic and clinical heterogeneity. Thus, the diagnosis is not always easily performed due to phenotypic and genetic overlap. Current clinical practices have focused on the systematic evaluation of a set of known genes for each phenotype, but this approach may fail in patients with inaccurate diagnosis or infrequent genetic cause. In the present study, we investigated the genetic cause of autosomal recessive RP (arRP) in a Spanish family in which the causal mutation has not yet been identified with primer extension technology and resequencing. Methods: We designed a whole-exome sequencing (WES)-based approach using NimbleGen SeqCap EZ Exome V3 sample preparation kit and the SOLiD 5500x1 next-generation sequencing platform. We sequenced the exomes of both unaffected parents and two affected siblings. Exome analysis resulted in the identification of 43,204 variants in the index patient. All variants passing filter criteria were validated with Sanger sequencing to confirm familial segregation and absence in the control population. In silico prediction tools were used to determine mutational impact on protein function and the structure of the identified variants. Results: Novel Usher syndrome type 2A (USH2A) compound heterozygous mutations, c.4325T>C (p. F1442S) and c.15188T>G (p.L5063R), located in exons 20 and 70, respectively, were identified as probable causative mutations for RP in this family. Family segregation of the variants showed the presence of both mutations in all affected members and in two siblings who were apparently asymptomatic at the time of family ascertainment. Clinical reassessment confirmed the diagnosis of RP in these patients. Conclusions: Using WES, we identified two heterozygous novel mutations in USH2A as the most likely disease-causing variants in a Spanish family diagnosed with arRP in which the cause of the disease had not yet been identified with commonly used techniques. Our data reinforce the clinical role of WES in the molecular diagnosis of highly heterogeneous genetic diseases where conventional genetic approaches have previously failed in achieving a proper diagnosis.

Abstract

With the advent of two-photon polymerization direct laser writing (TPP-DLW) the generation of high resolution three-dimensional (3D) microstructures with arbitrary shapes has increased dramatically. However, the fabrication of stimuli-responsive photoresists, essentially creating four-dimensional (4D) microstructures, remains a significant challenge. Herein, we present a supramolecular cholesteric liquid crystalline (CLC) photonic-photoresist for the fabrication of 4D photonic micro-actuators with sub-micron resolution. These structures display structural color and shape changes which are triggered by variation of humidity and/or temperature. These results embody the advantages of merging self-ordering systems with TPP-DLW to fabricate novel dual-responsive microstructures which hold potential for the development of micro-robots or as sensing elements in microfluidic devices.

Abstract

The article reports on a case of allergic contact dermatitis from a beeswax nipple-protective. A 32-year-old housewife, without atopic history, was breast-feeding her 1-month-old baby, when the application of a nipple-protective, made of beeswax, was recommended. Erythema, swelling and micropapules, with burning and itching appeared on her nipples and adjacent skin after 2 weeks of such application. Inspite of not using the protective any longer, the lesions increased due to the persistence of small quantities of wax adherent in the creases.

Abstract

The article presents information on allergic contact dermatitis from Verbena officinalis L. After identifying the plant as Verbena officinalis L., patch tests were carried out with parts of the fresh plant, and with aqueous and ether extracts of the whole plant. The flower, leaf and ether extract elicited positive (+ +) reactions at 4 days, while no reaction was observed to the stem or the aqueous extract. Patch tests with the fresh plant were negative in 10 controls. No cases have been observed by the authors, in spite of the frequent use of this plant among the population of this area, and the peculiar way of application with skin maceration induced by the above-mentioned verbena omelette.
