This paper will describe the development and testing of a new ARM© Cortex©-M based microcontroller for high temperature electronic systems. High temperature and electrical overstresses can cause latch-up in CMOS devices that will interfere with normal device operation or destroy the device. For reliable operation in the downhole drilling environment it was necessary to immunize this device against latch-up using an innovation processing technique. HARDSIL® technology that allows reliable latch-up free operation at extreme temperatures will be described. Details on the qualification and testing of the product to ensure that it meets the challenging environment will also be discussed. This includes electrical testing and temperature cycling testing to ensure that the different package options for the silicon device are mechanically sound in a high temperature environment that exposes the silicon and packaging materials to thermal cycling. The ecosystem for the microcontroller will also be discussed – hardware and software development tools are required to optimize the use of the device in extreme temperature embedded systems. An ecosystem of components is also required to operate with the microcontroller in the high temperature harsh environment.

Lithium-ion cells currently power almost all electronic devices and power tools; they are a key enabling technology for electric vehicles and are increasingly considered to be the technology of choice for grid storage. In line with this increased applicability, there is also an increase in the development of new commercial lithium-ion cell technologies that incorporate innovative functional components (electrode material compositions and electrolyte formulations) and designs, leading to a diverse range of performance characteristics. The uniqueness of each technology in-turn gives rise to unique evolutions of cell performance as the cell degrades because of usage. Non-destructively measuring and subsequently tracking the evolution of lithium-ion cell characteristics is valuable for both industrial engineers and academic researchers. To proceed in this regard, stakeholders have often devised their own procedures for characterising lithium-ion cells, typically without considering unification, comparability or compatibility. This makes the comparison of technologies complicated. This comprehensive review for the first time has analysed and discusses the various international standards and regulations for the characterisation and electrical testing of lithium-ion cells, specifically for high-power automotive and grid applications.

This paper will present natural ester transformer operating data with liquid test results from the units since installation. Various facts and experiences from transformers of two Olympic cities will be shared. The results of physical-chemical and electrical testing including dissolved gas analysis will provide the performance history in the field of a group of power transformers of 138 kV design and of unique designed submersible 10 kV distribution units filled with natural ester fluid, some in service for more than 4 years.

Engineered Cementitious Composites (ECC) is regarded as a multifunctional smart material due to its intrinsic autogenous self-healing and self-sensing attributes. Here, recent findings related to the utilization of electrical measurements in analyzing combined effectiveness of autogenous self-healing and self-sensing attributes in ECC are discussed. It is concluded that electrical testing which are already widely used for self-sensing, can also be used successfully in estimating the autogenous self-healing efficiency in ECC. It is believed that further research into developing/understanding methods to rapidly and accurately characterize the multifunctional properties of such smart materials will significantly fasten their development and wider practical adoption. © 2019, Associated Cement Companies Ltd.. According to the design structure and working characteristics of the whole vehicle electrical system of new energy vehicle, combined with the deep application of computer in PLC programming and sensor, this paper studies the detection target, detection principle, detection method and some instruments of electrical insulation performance and electrical working performance, in order to provide some reference for the development and progress of new energy vehicle electrical system.

CuO@ZnO core–shell cubes with controlled shell thickness were synthesized using a facile and environment-benign two-step solution route. A bending behavior was observed when electrical testing was conducted on the CuO@ZnO core–shell heterostructure coating, demonstrating formation of heterojunction barrier. Moreover, the CuO@ZnO appears to be a superior material for p-type sensor applications, it offers 2.6 times higher response, faster recovery rate and better selectivity comparing to the pristine CuO sensor. The enhanced gas sensing performance can be attributed to the coating of ZnO shell and improvement of the effectively electrical contacts between heterojunction materials.

Electromagnetic non-destructive testing/evaluation is an important means for assessment of the performance of chairlift ropes in a mining installation. The visual method produces the possibility of inadequate inspection due to its subjectivity. Magnetic flaw detectors, which measure loss of metallic area (LMA) and detect local faults (LF), such as broken wires and other faults of the ropes, are used to determine rope wear. Regular non-destructive evaluation/testing (NDE/NDT) inspections provide a powerful tool for monitoring the rate of degradation of a rope. The effective technology for these devices depends on the magnetic properties of the steel wire rope. An attempt has been made in this paper to evaluate the performance of ropes in two chairlift man-riding systems in an incline coal mine in India.

The paper provides a technical solution and methodology for conducting automated electrical and functional testing of small series samples of multi-chip assemblies. The results of multi-chip assembly samples testing combining Wire Bond and Flip-Chip technologies are presented. Based on the test results, defects that occur during the packaging process are localized and the assembly stages at which these defects occur are determined.

This paper addresses the issue of designing testing platform with 1200V/600A IGBT P.M type power module and integrates lots of testing items such as static, dynamic and capacitance into one platform. The most challenge things are to overcome the interference between different testing items, high power protection and reduce implementing time. Therefore, we invent some methods to make our testing flow more quickly, protectable and easy to aim at the requirements of high efficiency, high reliability in testing all of the electrical properties during the small period of time.

Scaling of high-performance logic devices is essentially driven by two requirements: Low leakage and high drive current. Here we investigate select issues and solutions: (i) Diffusion in nano-structures; (ii) SD/E doping requirements and their implications for doping solutions; (iii) Wrap-Around-Contact integration challenges. We do this by using a "virtual" fab, i.e. by employing Technology Computer Aided Design tools to mimic closely the processing and electrical testing in a real, physical fab, in particular explicitly modeling the doping processes such as implant and diffusion.

Electrical testing laboratory is full of hidden hazards. Although there are various safety policies required by legislation or international standards, the accidents in electrical testing laboratory happened frequently. To eliminate the probability of these hazards and accidents, an automatic and comprehensive system is required on top of the safety policies and guidance. In this paper, the current status of hazardous areas in various electrical and electronic testing laboratories was analyzed via a survey in the testing and certification industry. Based on the analytical results, a wireless sensor network combined with various detectors and wireless technology was built to construct a targeted, automatic and convenience wireless sensor system according to the known potential hazards. The effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed wireless sensor network were evaluated in the real electrical testing laboratory.

Silks from Nephila pilipes spiders native to Taiwan, obtained from the major ampullate gland, display novel piezoelectric properties that have been exploited in the preparation of energy harvesters. An energy harvester incorporating approximately 100 pieces of spider silk, each approximately 10 mm long, produced a voltage output of 13.4 mV when vibrated at 4 Hz. A repolarization process enhanced the piezoelectric properties of the spider silks significantly, notably increasing the output voltage to 40.7 mV at 4 Hz. Electrical testing indicated that the output voltages of the energy harvesters incorporating the repolarized silks were 3- to 4-fold higher than those of the harvesters containing the nonpolarized silks. The maximum output power (59.5 pW) was generated by the energy harvester incorporating the repolarized silks when connected to an external load resistor of 8.2 MΩ. Acknowledging that standards defined requirements for polymeric cutout performance are necessary and wise and that these standards provide some powerful evaluation tools, the standards raise some concerns in their approach to the electrical testing of polymer cutout insulators. In order for polymer cutout testing to possess optimum utility, it should recognize that the traditional use of voltage classes provides end users with a means of comparing cutouts produced by different manufacturers. Any standardized polymer cutout testing should respect the use of voltage classes and material properties if it is to provide objective data with maximum applicability.

Future transport systems will be powered more and more electrically. Generally the energy is stored in batteries. To reduce system weight and volume, multifunctional materials could be the answer. Therefore materials with the capability to store electric energy and to bear mechanical loads, need to be investigated to understand the effect of mechanical load on such structural integrated energy storage devices. In this work a thin film-supercapacitor is build up and integrated within a composite structure. The capacitor is developed to withstand the manufacturing process of a glass-fibre reinforced polymer and to carry mechanical loads, while simultaneously storing electrical energy. By using a supercapacitor housing, which is compatible to epoxy resin, a strong bonding is achieved, leading to a mechanical robust multifunctional composite. An electrolyte with large temperature window, low vapour pressure and the compatibility to a carbon based electrodes is chosen, to meet the requirement regarding the manufacturing process of the supercapacitor itself and the fibre reinforced composite. The composites with integrated thin film-supercapacitor as well as a set of reference samples are mechanically characterised in tensile and four-point bending test. In situ measurements are performed to investigate the influence of mechanical load on the electrical performance.

In this IP session, there will be 3 presentations focusing on how to increase the in-field quality level of A/MS devices. The 1st presentation will discuss using optical inspection data with electrical test data such that the combined data can be used to further screen out potentially bad devices that would have normally passed electrical testing. The 2nd presentation discuses using a top level fault injection method to determine the ASIL levels in the ISO26262 standard. The 3rd presentation will discuss the current progress of the P2427 Standardized Analogue Test Coverage Working Group and how this standard can be used to increase quality levels of A/MS devices.
