The authors would like to thank Luneau Technology Portugal for lending the Visionix VX120., Purpose: To study the effect of near-vision reading task on optical quality of the eye when performed on a computer monitor and on printed paper, and to identify which of the two results in greater changes. Methods: Two groups of subjects performed a 30-min reading task in two different conditions: on a computer monitor and on printed paper. Ocular, corneal, and internal wavefront aberrations (Zernike coefficients up to 6th order), root-mean-square of low- and high-order aberrations, spherical equivalent, vectoral components of ocular astigmatism ( J45 and J0), and the compensation factor between internal and corneal aberrations were measured before and after the tasks. Their changes were analyzed in each group and between groups. Results: Statistically significant changes in wavefront aberrations and in root mean square of low- and high-order aberrations were observed in both groups which was significantly greater when the task was performed on printed paper. Partial loss of compensation mechanism and variation in spherical equivalent in a negative direction occurred after both reading tasks; however, it was statistically significant only with printed paper reading task. The vectoral components of ocular astigmatism did not show statistically significant changes in either groups. We analyze the stability of a unique coexistence equilibrium point of a system of ordinary differential equations (ODE system) modelling the dynamics of a metapopulation, more specifically, a set of local populations inhabiting discrete habitat patches that are connected to one another through dispersal or migration. We assume that the inter-patch migrations are detailed balanced and that the patches are identical with intra-patch dynamics governed by a mean-field ODE system with a coexistence equilibrium. By making use of an appropriate Lyapunov function coupled with LaSalle’s invariance principle, we are able to show that the coexistence equilibrium point within each patch is locally asymptotically stable if the inter-patch dispersal network is heterogeneous, whereas it is neutrally stable in the case of a homogeneous network. These results provide a mathematical proof confirming the existing numerical simulations and broaden the range of networks for which they are valid.

Intracellular copper [Cu(I)] has been hypothesized to play role in the differentiation of the neurons. This necessitates understanding the role of Cu(I) not only in the neurons but also in the glia considering their anatomical proximity, contribution towards ion homeostasis, and neurodegeneration. In this study, we did a systematic investigation of the changes in the cellular copper homeostasis during neuronal and glial differentiation and the pathways triggered by them. Our study demonstrates increased mRNA for the plasma membrane copper transporter CTR1 leading to increased Cu(I) during the neuronal (PC-12) differentiation. ATP7A is retained in the trans-Golgi network (TGN) despite high Cu(I) demonstrating its utilization towards the neuronal differentiation. Intracellular copper triggers pathways essential for neurite generation and ERK1/2 activation during the neuronal differentiation. ERK1/2 activation also accompanies the differentiation of the foetal brain derived neuronal progenitor cells. The study demonstrates that ERK1/2 phosphorylation is essential for the viability of the neurons. In contrast, differentiated C-6 (glia) cells contain low intracellular copper and significant downregulation of the ERK1/2 phosphorylation demonstrating that ERK1/2 activation does not regulate the viability of the glia. But ATP7A shows vesicular localization despite low copper in the glia. In addition to the TGN, ATP7A localizes into RAB11 positive recycling endosomes in the glial neurites. Our study demonstrates the role of copper dependent ERK1/2 phosphorylation in the neuronal viability. Whereas glial differentiation largely involves sequestration of Cu(I) into the endosomes potentially (i) for ready release and (ii) rendering cytosolic copper unavailable for pathways like the ERK1/2 activation.

Real-time monitoring of neonicotinoid pesticide residues is of great significance for food security and sustainable development of the ecological environment. Herein, a paper-based surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) amplified approach was proposed by virtue of multilayered plasmonic coupling amplification. The unique plasmonic SERS multilayer was constructed using three-dimensional (3D) silver dendrite (SD)/electropolymerized molecular identifier (EMI)/silver nanoparticle (AgNP) sandwich hybrids with multiple hotspots and a strong electromagnetic field in nanogaps. Dendritelike 3D silver materials with remarkably high accessible surface areas and the lightning rod effect constituted the first-order enhancement of paper-based sensors. Molecular identifiers coated upon an SD layer as the interlayer were used for target capture and enrichment. Subsequently, AgNPs featuring rough surface and local plasma resonance decorated as the top layer formed the secondary enhancement of the amplification strategy. As the most brilliant part, dendritelike 3D silver coupled with AgNPs has established double Ag layers to accomplish a multistage enhancement of SERS signals based on the superposition of their electromagnetic fields. Owning to the distinctive design of the multiple coupling amplification strategy, the fabricated SERS paper chips demonstrated impressive specificity and ultrahigh sensitivity in the detection of imidacloprid (IMI), with a detection limit as low as 0.02811 ng mL-1. More importantly, the multiple SERS enhancement paper chip holds great potential for automated screening of a variety of contaminants.

Rising concern about the use of non-permitted colourants, in common food items such as dals and green vegetables sold in Indian markets, have led to a demand for low-cost point-of-use chemical analysis tools. Conventional food-analysis techniques involving tedious sample preparation protocols are not suited for in-field applications. Surface Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy (SERS) is an analytical technique that is well-suited for point-of-use chemical analysis with molecular level detection capability, which can also serve as a quality assurance tool for businesses. Effective and rapid signal collection from a large-area sample within a field-setting using disposable, low-cost SERS substrates is a key challenge in implementing such a solution. Herein, we demonstrate the use of inkjet-printed thin films comprising of robust nanostructured-silver as flexible, paper-based SERS (P-SERS) swabs for the direct detection of Metanil Yellow (MY) from toor dal (yellow split pigeon peas) samples and Malachite Green (MG) from green peas and green chillies. The macroscopic uniformity of these thin-films in combination with a portable Raman spectrometer equipped with orbital raster scanning (ORS™) technology for signal collection results in an unprecedented precision (RSD ∼ 1.6%) upon characterizing samples saturated with Rhodamine-6G (R6G), a standard Raman probe. As several food-cleansing products have appeared in the marketplace, the adulterant removal efficacy of some commercially available ‘washes’ as well as products such as ‘ozoniser’, which was determined by SERS characterization of swabs before and after use, is also reported.

The presence of rattlers complicates the analysis of the energy landscape due to extra zero-frequency normal modes. By employing a long-range Gaussian tail modification, we remove the rattlers without changing the structure and the dynamics of the system, and successfully describe the potential energy landscape in terms of minima and transition states. This coarse-grained description of the landscape and the dynamical properties of the modified potential exhibit characteristic signatures of glass-forming liquids. However, we show that despite having qualitatively similar behaviour, the modified WCA potential is less frustrated compared to its attractive counterpart.

Significance Prostate cancer is the most common cancer among men. An accurate diagnosis of its severity at detection plays a major role in improving their survival. Recently, machine learning models using biomarkers identified from Raman micro-spectroscopy discriminated intraductal carcinoma of the prostate (IDC-P) from cancer tissue with a ≥85 % detection accuracy and differentiated high-grade prostatic intraepithelial neoplasia (HGPIN) from IDC-P with a ≥97.8 % accuracy. Aim To improve the classification performance of machine learning models identifying different types of prostate cancer tissue using a new dimensional reduction technique. Approach A radial basis function (RBF) kernel support vector machine (SVM) model was trained on Raman spectra of prostate tissue from a 272-patient cohort (Centre hospitalier de l'Universite de Montreal, CHUM) and tested on two independent cohorts of 76 patients [University Health Network (UHN)] and 135 patients (Centre hospitalier universitaire de Quebec-Universite Laval, CHUQc-UL). Two types of engineered features were used. Individual intensity features, i.e., Raman signal intensity measured at particular wavelengths and novel Raman spectra fitted peak features consisting of peak heights and widths. Results Combining engineered features improved classification performance for the three aforementioned classification tasks. The improvements for IDC-P/cancer classification for the UHN and CHUQc-UL testing sets in accuracy, sensitivity, specificity, and area under the curve (AUC) are (numbers in parenthesis are associated with the CHUQc-UL testing set): +4 % (+8 % ), +7 % (+9 % ), +2 % (6%), +9 (+9) with respect to the current best models. Discrimination between HGPIN and IDC-P was also improved in both testing cohorts: +2.2 % (+1.7 % ), +4.5 % (+3.6 % ), +0 % (+0 % ), +2.3 (+0). While no global improvements were obtained for the normal versus cancer classification task [+0 % (-2 % ), +0 % (-3 % ), +2 % (-2 % ), +4 (+3)], the AUC was improved in both testing sets. Conclusions Combining individual intensity features and novel Raman fitted peak features, improved the classification performance on two independent and multicenter testing sets in comparison to using only individual intensity features.

Significance : Optical microscopy is characterized by the ability to get high resolution, below 1 μm, high contrast, functional and quantitative images. The use of shaped illumination, such as with lightsheet microscopy, has led to greater three-dimensional isotropic resolution with low phototoxicity. However, in most complex samples and tissues, optical imaging is limited by scattering. Many solutions to this issue have been proposed, from using passive approaches such as Bessel beam illumination to active methods incorporating aberration correction, but making fair comparisons between different approaches has proven to be challenging. Aim : We present a phase-encoded Monte Carlo radiation transfer algorithm (φMC) capable of comparing the merits of different illumination strategies or predicting the performance of an individual approach. Approach : We show that φMC is capable of modeling interference phenomena such as Gaussian or Bessel beams and compare the model with experiment. Results : Using this verified model, we show that, for a sample with homogeneously distributed scatterers, there is no inherent advantage to illuminating a sample with a conical wave (Bessel beam) instead of a spherical wave (Gaussian beam), except for maintaining a greater depth of focus. Conclusion : φMC is adaptable to any illumination geometry, sample property, or beam type (such as fractal or layered scatterer distribution) and as such provides a powerful predictive tool for optical imaging in thick samples. BackgroundMental health policy makers require evidence-based information to optimise effective care provision based on local need, but tools are unavailable.AimsTo develop and validate a population-level prediction model for need for early intervention in psychosis (EIP) care for first-episode psychosis (FEP) in England up to 2025, based on epidemiological evidence and demographic projections.MethodWe used Bayesian Poisson regression to model small-area-level variation in FEP incidence for people aged 16–64 years. We compared six candidate models, validated against observed National Health Service FEP data in 2017. Our best-fitting model predicted annual incidence case-loads for EIP services in England up to 2025, for probable FEP, treatment in EIP services, initial assessment by EIP services and referral to EIP services for ‘suspected psychosis’. Forecasts were stratified by gender, age and ethnicity, at national and Clinical Commissioning Group levels.ResultsA model with age, gender, ethnicity, small-area-level deprivation, social fragmentation and regional cannabis use provided best fit to observed new FEP cases at national and Clinical Commissioning Group levels in 2017 (predicted 8112, 95% CI 7623–8597; observed 8038, difference of 74 [0.92%]). By 2025, the model forecasted 11 067 new treated cases per annum (95% CI 10 383–11 740). For every 10 new treated cases, 21 and 23 people would be assessed by and referred to EIP services for suspected psychosis, respectively.ConclusionsOur evidence-based methodology provides an accurate, validated tool to inform clinical provision of EIP services about future population need for care, based on local variation of major social determinants of psychosis.

Significance: Hyperspectral and multispectral imaging (HMSI) in medical applications provides information about the physiology, morphology, and composition of tissues and organs. The use of these technologies enables the evaluation of biological objects and can potentially be applied as an objective assessment tool for medical professionals. Aim: Our study investigates HMSI systems for their usability in medical applications. Approach: Four HMSI systems (one hyperspectral pushbroom camera and three multispectral snapshot cameras) were examined and a spectrometer was used as a reference system, which was initially validated with a standardized color chart. The spectral accuracy of the cameras reproducing chemical properties of different biological objects (porcine blood, physiological porcine tissue, and pathological porcine tissue) was analyzed using the Pearson correlation coefficient. Results: All the HMSI cameras examined were able to provide the characteristic spectral properties of blood and tissues. A pushbroom camera and two snapshot systems achieve Pearson coefficients of at least 0.97 compared to the ground truth, indicating a very high positive correlation. Only one snapshot camera performs moderately to high positive correlation (0.59 to 0.85). Conclusion: The knowledge of the suitability of HMSI cameras for accurate measurement of chemical properties of biological objects offers a good opportunity for the selection of the optimal imaging tool for specific medical applications, such as organ transplantation.

Significance: Diffuse light is ubiquitous in biomedical optics and imaging. Understanding the process of migration of an initial photon population entering tissue to a completely randomized, diffusely scattered population provides valuable insight to the interpretation and design of optical measurements. Aim: The goal of this perspective is to present a brief, unifying analytical framework to describe how properties of light transition from an initial state to a distributed state as light diffusion occurs. Approach: First, measurement parameters of light are introduced, and Monte Carlo simulations along with a simple analytical expression are used to explore how these individual parameters might exhibit diffusive behavior. Second, techniques to perform optical measurements are considered, highlighting how various measurement parameters can be leveraged to subsample photon populations. Results: Simulation results reinforce the fact that light undergoes a transition from a non-diffuse population to one that is first subdiffuse and then fully diffuse. Myriad experimental methods exist to isolate subpopulations of photons, which can be broadly categorized as source- and/or detector-encoded techniques, as well as methods of tagging the tissue of interest. Conclusions: Characteristic properties of light progressing to diffusion can be described by some form of Gaussian distribution that grows in space, time, angle, wavelength, polarization, and coherence. In some cases, these features can be approximated by simpler exponential behavior. Experimental methods to subsample features of the photon distribution can be achieved or theoretical methods can be used to better interpret the data with this framework.

Significance: In neurosurgery, it is essential to differentiate between tumor and healthy brain regions to maximize tumor resection while minimizing damage to vital healthy brain tissue. However, conventional intraoperative imaging tools used to guide neurosurgery are often unable to distinguish tumor margins, particularly in infiltrative tumor regions and low-grade gliomas. Aim: The aim of this work is to assess the feasibility of a label-free molecular imaging tool called stimulated Raman scattering-spectroscopic optical coherence tomography (SRS-SOCT) to differentiate between healthy brain tissue and tumor based on (1) structural biomarkers derived from the decay rate of signals as a function of depth and (2) molecular biomarkers based on relative differences in lipid and protein composition extracted from the SRS signals. Approach: SRS-SOCT combines the molecular sensitivity of SRS (based on vibrational spectroscopy) with the spatial and spectral multiplexing capabilities of SOCT to enable fast, spatially and spectrally resolved molecular imaging. SRS-SOCT is applied to image a 9L gliosarcoma rat tumor model, a well-characterized model that recapitulates human high-grade gliomas, including high proliferative capability, high vascularization, and infiltration at the margin. Structural and biochemical signatures acquired from SRS-SOCT are extracted to identify healthy and tumor tissues. Results: Data show that SRS-SOCT provides light-scattering-based signatures that correlate with the presence of tumors, similar to conventional OCT. Further, nonlinear phase changes from the SRS interaction, as measured with SRS-SOCT, provide an additional measure to clearly separate tumor tissue from healthy brain regions. We also show that the nonlinear phase signals in SRS-SOCT provide a signal-to-noise advantage over the nonlinear amplitude signals for identifying tumors. Conclusions: SRS-SOCT can distinguish both spatial and spectral features that identify tumor regions in the 9L gliosarcoma rat model. This tool provides fast, label-free, nondestructive, and spatially resolved molecular information that, with future development, can potentially assist in identifying tumor margins in neurosurgery.

We propose an atomistic model for correlated particle dynamics in liquids and glasses predicting both slow stretched-exponential relaxation (SER) and fast compressed-exponential relaxation (CER). The model is based on the key concept of elastically interacting local relaxation events. SER is related to slowing down of dynamics of local relaxation events as a result of this interaction, whereas CER is related to the avalanche-like dynamics in the low-temperature glass state. The model predicts temperature dependence of SER and CER seen experimentally and recovers the simple, Debye, exponential decay at high temperature. Finally, we reproduce SER to CER crossover across the glass transition recently observed in metallic glasses.

Significance: Coherent Raman scattering (CRS) microscopy is an optical imaging technique with capabilities that could benefit a broad range of biomedical research studies. Aim: We reflect on the birth, rapid rise, and inescapable growing pains of the technique and look back on nearly four decades of developments to examine where the CRS imaging approach might be headed in the next decade to come. Approach: We provide a brief historical account of CRS microscopy, followed by a discussion of the challenges to disseminate the technique to a larger audience. We then highlight recent progress in expanding the capabilities of the CRS microscope and assess its current appeal as a practical imaging tool. Results: New developments in Raman tagging have improved the specificity and sensitivity of the CRS technique. In addition, technical advances have led to CRS microscopes that can capture hyperspectral data cubes at practical acquisition times. These improvements have broadened the application space of the technique. Conclusion: The technical performance of the CRS microscope has improved dramatically since its inception, but these advances have not yet translated into a substantial user base beyond a strong core of enthusiasts. Nonetheless, new developments are poised to move the unique capabilities of the technique into the hands of more users.

Significance: Beer–Lambert law (BLL) is a widely used tool for contact and remote determination of absorber concentration in various media, including living tissues. Originally proposed in the 18th century as a simple exponential expression, it has survived numerous modifications and updates. The basic assumptions of this law may not be fulfilled in real measurement conditions. This can lead to mistaken or misinterpreted results. In particular, the effects to be additionally taken into account in the tissue measurements include anisotropy, scattering, fluorescence, chemical equilibria, interference, dichroism, spectral bandwidth disagreements, stray radiation, and instrumental effects. Aim: We review the current state of the art and the main limitations of remote tissue diagnostics using the BLL. Historical development of updating this law by taking into account specific additional factors such as light scattering and photon pathlengths in diffuse reflectance is described, along with highlighting the main risks to be considered by interpreting the measured data. Approach: Literature data related to extension and modification of the BLL related to tissue assessment and concentration estimation of specific tissue molecules are collected and analyzed. The main emphasis here is put on the optical measurements of living tissue chromophore concentrations and estimation of physiological parameters, e.g., blood oxygen saturation. Results: Modified expressions of the BLL suitable for several specific cases of living tissue characterization are presented and discussed. Conclusions: Applications of updated/modified Beer–Lambert law (MBLL) with respect to particular measurement conditions are helpful for obtaining more reliable data on the target tissue physiological state and biochemical content. MBLL accounting for the role of scattering in several ways appears to be a successful approach. Extended MBLL and BLL in the time domain form could provide more accurate results, but this requires more time resources to be spent.

Significance: Personalized medicine requires the tracking of an individual’s metabolite levels over time to detect anomalies and evaluate the body’s response to medications. Implanted sensors offer effective means to continuously monitor specific metabolite levels, provided they are accurate, stable over long time periods, and do no harm. Aim: Four types of hydrogel embedded with pH-sensitive sensors were evaluated for their accuracy, sensitivity, reversibility, longevity, dynamic response, and consistency in static versus dynamic conditions and long-term storage. Approach: Raman spectroscopy was first used to calibrate the intensity of pH-sensitive peaks of the Raman-active hydrogel sensors in a static pH environment. The dynamic response was then assessed for hydrogels exposed to changing pH conditions within a flow cell. Finally, the static pH response after 5 months of storage was determined. Results: All four types of hydrogels allowed the surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) sensors to respond to the pH level of the local environment without introducing interfering signals, resulting in consistent calibration curves. When the pH level changed, the probes in the gels were slow to reach steady-state, requiring several hours, and response times were found to vary among hydrogels. Only one type, poly(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate) (pHEMA), lasted five months without significant degradation of dynamic range. Conclusions: While all hydrogels appear to be viable candidates as biocompatible hosts for the SERS sensing chemistry, pHEMA was found to be most functionally stable over the long interval tested. Poly(ethylene glycol) hydrogels exhibit the most rapid response to changing pH. Since these two gel types are covalently cross-linked and do not generally degrade, they both offer advantages over sodium alginate for use as implants.

In view of its application in optoelectronic devices, understanding transient photo-induced effects is crucial. Here, we investigate by time- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy BP in its pristine state and in the presence of Stark splitting, chemically induced by Cs ad-sorption. We show that photo-injected carriers trigger bandgap renormalization, and a concurrent valence band flattening caused by Pauli blocking. In biased samples, photo-excitation leads to a long-lived (ns) surface photovoltage of few hundreds mV that counterbalances the Cs-induced surface band bending. This allows us to disentangle bulk from surface electronic states, and to clarify the mechanism underlying the band inversion observed in bulk samples.

Removing benzene from indoor space plays an important role in indoor air purification. A novel filter with vegetal fiber paper (VFP) as matrix hosting silica gel is proposed in this paper for benzene removal. In order to investigate the feasibility and performance of this idea, firstly, three pieces of VFP samples impregnated with different amounts of silica gel are fabricated and their benzene adsorption quantities are tested. The results show that three times is recommended as the optimal number for impregnating. The VFP sample impregnated with silica gel after the third impregnating exhibits commendable coating stability and good benzene adsorption performance. Additionally, at low relative pressure (Pb /Ps ≤ 0.05), the experimental data of benzene adsorption isotherms fit well with the Langmuir model with R2 greater than 0.97. Then, two actual filters made of VFP impregnated with silica gel after the third impregnating were fabricated. It is found that the pressure drop of the actual filter is only 1200 Pa/m when the air velocity is 2 m/s. Besides, the one-pass efficiency of the filter can reach to 19.44%. It is expected that the silica gel coated on the filter can be modified to improve the purification performance of the filter.

Food safety issues, especially those related to drug residues, have caused concern in recent years. Malachite green (MG), which is frequently used as ectoparasiticide, fungicide, and antiseptic in fish farming, is poisonous and carcinogenic. Several technologies and methods have been developed to accurately detect MG, but they can be time-consuming and expensive. Herein, we prepared a glass fiber paper as a surface-enhanced Raman scattering substrate for rapid and convenient detection of MG residues in fish. Uniform silver nanoparticles were deposited on the glass fiber paper by two in situ reduction steps of silver nitrate. The Raman signal of MG was detected and recorded using a portable Raman spectrometer in 10 s. There was a good linear relationship between the surface-enhanced Raman scattering signal intensity and the concentration of MG between 1 × 10−7 and 1 × 10−5 mol/L and the limit of detection was 5 × 10−10 mol/L. Residual MG in fish samples was extracted and detected with a recovery rate range of 98.9–119.4%. This method provides a novel way to detect MG in fish.

Minimally invasive devices to detect molecules in dermal interstitial fluid (ISF) are desirable for point-of-care diagnostic and monitoring applications. In this study, we developed a microneedle (MN) patch that collects ISF for on-patch biomarker analysis by surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS). The micrometer-scale MNs create micropores in the skin surface, through which microliter quantities of ISF are collected onto plasmonic paper on the patch backing. The plasmonic paper was prepared by immobilizing poly(styrenesulfonate) (PSS) coated gold nanorods (AuNRs) on a thin strip of filter paper using plasmonic calligraphy. Negatively charged PSS was used to bind positively charged rhodamine 6G (R6G), which served as a model compound, and thereby localize R6G on AuNR surface. R6G bound on the AuNR surface was detected and quantified by acquiring SERS spectra from the plasmonic paper MN patch. This approach was used to measure pharmacokinetic profiles of R6G in ISF and serum from rats in vivo. This proof-of-concept study indicates that a plasmonic paper MN patch has the potential to enable on-patch measurement of molecules in ISF for research and future medical applications.

A theorem of Weyl tells us that the Lorentz (and parity) invariant polynomials in the momenta of $n$ particles are generated by the dot products. We extend this result to include the action of an arbitrary permutation group $P \subset S_n$ on the particles, to take account of the quantum-field-theoretic fact that particles can be indistinguishable. Doing so provides a convenient set of variables for describing scattering processes involving identical particles, such as $pp \to jjj$, for which we provide an explicit set of Lorentz and permutation invariant generators., Comment: 18 pages, 3 Tables

Significance: Large space-bandwidth product is highly desirable in many biomedical imaging. Fourier ptychographic microscopy (FPM) is a computational imaging technique that can significantly increase the space-bandwidth product of a standard microscope. The illuminator of a Fourier ptychographic microscope is not flexible at present, and it is inconvenient to meet different imaging needs. Aim: An illuminator based on a two-axis motorized rotation stage was presented to provide a more flexible illuminating way with the goal of meeting different imaging needs. Approach: The illuminator adopts a concentric illuminating method to provide coherent illumination in any direction on the sample plane. The sampling pattern can be freely designed and changed according to the parameters of the imaging system. A dither removing algorithm was proposed to remove the potential dither influence introduced in the image acquisition process. Results: The illuminator could be conveniently integrated into different imaging systems. The feasibility and flexibility were demonstrated by applying it to imaging systems with numerical aperture of 0.045 and 0.01. The resolution gain is about 4- and 13-fold, respectively. The effectiveness of the dither removing algorithm was validated in both simulation and experiment. Conclusions: A more flexible illuminator for FPM was presented to meet different imaging needs. A dither removing algorithm was proposed to remove dither influence.

Significance: Fourier ptychography (FP) is a computational imaging approach that achieves high-resolution reconstruction. Inspired by neural networks, many deep-learning-based methods are proposed to solve FP problems. However, the performance of FP still suffers from optical aberration, which needs to be considered. Aim: We present a neural network model for FP reconstructions that can make proper estimation toward aberration and achieve artifact-free reconstruction. Approach: Inspired by the iterative reconstruction of FP, we design a neural network model that mimics the forward imaging process of FP via TensorFlow. The sample and aberration are considered as learnable weights and optimized through back-propagation. Especially, we employ the Zernike terms instead of aberration to decrease the optimization freedom of pupil recovery and perform a high-accuracy estimation. Owing to the auto-differentiation capabilities of the neural network, we additionally utilize total variation regularization to improve the visual quality. Results: We validate the performance of the reported method via both simulation and experiment. Our method exhibits higher robustness against sophisticated optical aberrations and achieves better image quality by reducing artifacts. Conclusions: The forward neural network model can jointly recover the high-resolution sample and optical aberration in iterative FP reconstruction. We hope our method that can provide a neural-network perspective to solve iterative-based coherent or incoherent imaging problems.

We introduce and explore an approach for constructing force fields for small molecules, which combines intuitive low body order empirical force field terms with the concepts of data driven statistical fits of recent machine learned potentials. We bring these two key ideas together to bridge the gap between established empirical force fields that have a high degree of transferability on the one hand, and the machine learned potentials that are systematically improvable and can converge to very high accuracy, on the other. Our framework extends the atomic permutationally invariant polynomials (aPIP) developed for elemental materials in (2019 Mach. Learn.: Sci. Technol. 1 015004) to molecular systems. The body order decomposition allows us to keep the dimensionality of each term low, while the use of an iterative fitting scheme as well as regularisation procedures improve the extrapolation outside the training set. We investigate aPIP force fields with up to generalised 4-body terms, and examine the performance on a set of small organic molecules. We achieve a high level of accuracy when fitting individual molecules, comparable to those of the many-body machine learned force fields. Fitted to a combined training set of short linear alkanes, the accuracy of the aPIP force field still significantly exceeds what can be expected from classical empirical force fields, while retaining reasonable transferability to both configurations far from the training set and to new molecules.

Significance: Raman spectroscopy has been developed for surgical guidance applications interrogating live tissue during tumor resection procedures to detect molecular contrast consistent with cancer pathophysiological changes. To date, the vibrational spectroscopy systems developed for medical applications include single-point measurement probes and intraoperative microscopes. There is a need to develop systems with larger fields of view (FOVs) for rapid intraoperative cancer margin detection during surgery. Aim: We design a handheld macroscopic Raman imaging system for in vivo tissue margin characterization and test its performance in a model system. Approach: The system is made of a sterilizable line scanner employing a coherent fiber bundle for relaying excitation light from a 785-nm laser to the tissue. A second coherent fiber bundle is used for hyperspectral detection of the fingerprint Raman signal over an area of 1 cm2. Machine learning classifiers were trained and validated on porcine adipose and muscle tissue. Results: Porcine adipose versus muscle margin detection was validated ex vivo with an accuracy of 99% over the FOV of 95 mm2 in ∼3 min using a support vector machine. Conclusions: This system is the first large FOV Raman imaging system designed to be integrated in the workflow of surgical cancer resection. It will be further improved with the aim of discriminating brain cancer in a clinically acceptable timeframe during glioma surgery.

Paper-TiO2-Ag2O floating photocatalysts were produced under mild condition and their photocatalytic activity for the degradation of aromatic amine under sunlight stimulant was investigated. Characterizations by Raman, XRD, XPS, DRS and PL confirmed the presence of TiO2 and Ag2O, and the morphology of the appended TiO2/Ag2O layer was probed by FE-SEM. The photocatalytic activity of the prepared samples was investigated by the degradation of aniline (AN) in water under simulated sun-light illumination and constrained conditions, i.e. non-stirring and non-oxygenation. The presence of Ag2O combined with TiO2 was shown to improve the resistance of paper to bacteria attack, thus increasing the durability of the photocatalyst. Thanks to its hydrophobic character, the paper-TiO2-Ag2O NPs can be employed as useful floating photocatalyst and can be reused in continuous cycles.

Conventional paper lateral flow assays have low sensitivity and suffer from severe interference from complex human fluid sample matrices, which prevents their practical application in the testing of whole blood samples in the point-of-care settings. To solve this problem, gold nanostar@Raman reporter@silica-sandwiched nanoparticles have been developed as the surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) probes for sensing transduction; and a functionalized filter membrane assembly has been designed and constructed in the paper-based lateral flow strip (PLFS) as a built-in plasma separation unit. In this "on-strip" plasma separation unit, three layers of filter membranes are stacked and surface-modified to maximize the separation efficiency and the plasma yield. As a result, the integrated PLFS has been successfully used for the detection of carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) in 30 μL of whole blood with the assistance of a portable Raman reader, achieving a limit of detection of 1.0 ng mL-1. In short, this report presents an inexpensive, disposable, portable, and field-deployable paper-based device as a general point-of-care testing tool for protein biomarker detection in a drop of whole blood.

We study the effective field theory (including operators up to dimension five) of models in which dark matter is composite, consisting of either an electroweak doublet Dirac fermion (`higgsino-like dark matter') or an electroweak triplet Majorana fermion (`wino-like dark matter'). Some of the dimension-five operators in the former case cause mass splittings between the neutralino and chargino states, leading to a depleted rate of coannihilations and viable thermal relic dark matter with masses of the order of tens to hundreds of GeV rather than the usual pure higgsino thermal relic mass of 1 TeV. No such effects are found in the latter case (where the usual thermal relic mass is 3 TeV). Other operators, present for both wino- and higgsino-like dark matter, correspond to inelastic electromagnetic dipole moment interactions and annihilation through these can lead to viable models with dark matter masses up by an order of magnitude compared to the usual values., 23 pages, 5 figures

Significance: Management of skin cancer worldwide is often a challenge of scale, in that the number of potential cases presented outweighs the resources available to detect and treat skin cancer. Aim: This project aims to develop a polarimetry probe to create an accessible skin cancer detection tool. Approach: An optical probe was developed to perform bulk tissue Stokes polarimetry, a technique in which a laser of known polarization illuminates a target, and the altered polarization state of the backscattered light is measured. Typically, measuring a polarization state requires four sequential measurements with different orientations of polarization filters; however, this probe contains four spatially separated detectors to take four measurements in one shot. The probe was designed to perform at a lower cost and higher speed than conventional polarimetry methods. The probe uses photodiodes and linear and circular film polarizing filters as detectors, and a low-coherence laser diode as its illumination source. The probe design takes advantage of the statistical uniformity of the polarization speckle field formed at the detection area. Results: Tests of each probe component, and the complete system put together, were performed to evaluate error and confirm the probe’s performance despite its low-cost components. This probe’s potential is demonstrated in a pilot clinical study on 71 skin lesions. The degree of polarization was found to be a factor by which malignant melanoma could be separated from other types of skin lesions.

Significance: Mid-infrared (IR) imaging based on the vibrational transition of biomolecules provides good chemical-specific contrast in label-free imaging of biology tissues, making it a popular tool in both biomedical studies and clinical applications. However, the current technology typically requires thin and dried or extremely flat samples, whose complicated processing limits this technology’s broader translation. Aim: To address this issue, we report mid-IR photoacoustic microscopy (PAM), which can readily work with fresh and thick tissue samples, even when they have rough surfaces. Approach: We developed a transmission-mode mid-IR PAM system employing an optical parametric oscillation laser operating in the wavelength range from 2.5 to 12 μm. Due to its high sensitivity to optical absorption and the low ultrasonic attenuation of tissue, our PAM achieved greater probing depth than Fourier transform IR spectroscopy, thus enabling imaging fresh and thick tissue samples with rough surfaces. Results: In our spectroscopy study, the CH2 symmetric stretching at 2850 cm−1 (3508 nm) was found to be an excellent source of endogenous contrast for lipids. At this wavenumber, we demonstrated label-free imaging of the lipid composition in fresh, manually cut, and unprocessed tissue sections of up to 3-mm thickness. Conclusions: Our technology requires no time-consuming sample preparation procedure and has great potential in both fast clinical histological analysis and fundamental biological studies.

Significance: Raman spectroscopy (RS) applied to surgical guidance is attracting attention among scientists in biomedical optics. Offering a computational platform for studying depth-resolved RS and probing molecular specificity of different tissue layers is of crucial importance to increase the precision of these techniques and facilitate their clinical adoption. Aim: The aim of this work was to present a rigorous analysis of inelastic scattering depth sampling and elucidate the relationship between sensing depth of the Raman effect and optical properties of the tissue under interrogation. Approach: A new Monte Carlo (MC) package was developed to simulate absorption, fluorescence, elastic, and inelastic scattering of light in tissue. The validity of the MC algorithm was demonstrated by comparison with experimental Raman spectra in phantoms of known optical properties using nylon and polydimethylsiloxane as Raman-active compounds. A series of MC simulations were performed to study the effects of optical properties on Raman sensing depth for an imaging geometry consistent with single-point detection using a handheld fiber optics probe system. Results: The MC code was used to estimate the Raman sensing depth of a handheld fiber optics system. For absorption and reduced scattering coefficients of 0.001 and 1 mm − 1, the sensing depth varied from 105 to 225 μm for a range of Raman probabilities from 10 − 6 to 10 − 3. Further, for a realistic Raman probability of 10 − 6, the sensing depth ranged between 10 and 600 μm for the range of absorption coefficients 0.001 to 1.4 mm − 1 and reduced scattering coefficients of 0.5 to 30 mm − 1. Conclusions: A spectroscopic MC light transport simulation platform was developed and validated against experimental measurements in tissue phantoms and used to predict depth sensing in tissue. It is hoped that the current package and reported results provide the research community with an effective simulating tool to improve the development of clinical applications of RS.

Significance: Cardiac troponin I (cTnI) is a primary biomarker for diagnosis of myocardial infarction (MI). In contrast to central laboratory tests for cTnI, point-of-care (POC) testing has the advantage of providing results when the patient is first encountered, which helps high-risk patients to be treated more rapidly and low-risk patients to be released in a timely fashion. A paper fluidic platform is good for POC testing because the paper is abundant, low cost, and disposable. However, current cTnI assays on paper platforms use antibodies as the recognition element, which has limitations due to the high cost of production and antibody stability issues at the POC. Aim: To develop an aptamer-based assay on a paper strip using surface-enhanced resonance Raman spectroscopy (SERRS) for detection of cTnI in the clinically relevant range at the POC. Approach: Gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) were functionalized with a Raman reporter molecule, malachite green isothiocyanate. The functionalized AuNPs were encapsulated in a silica shell and provided a SERRS signal using a handheld Raman system with a 638-nm excitation wavelength. A primary aptamer and a secondary aptamer of cTnI were used in a sandwich assay format to bind the cTnI on a test line of a paper fluidic platform. By measuring the SERRS signal from the test line, the concentration of cTnI was quantitatively determined. Results: The aptamer-based SERRS assay on a paper strip had a detection range of 0.016 to 0.1 ng/ml for cTnI, had good selectivity for cTnI compared to three other markers, had good stability over 10 days, and had good performance in the more complex serum sample matrix. Conclusions: The aptamer-based SERRS assay on a paper strip has the potential to provide a sensitive, selective, stable, repeatable, and cost-effective platform for the detection of cTnI toward eventual use in diagnosis of MI at the POC.

For the preparation of activated carbon papers (APCs) as supercapacitor electrodes, impurity substances were removed from rice husks, before carbonization and various activation temperature treatments, to optimize electro chemical efficiency. The porosities and electrochemical performances of the ACPs depended strongly on activation temperature: The specific surface area increased from 202.92 (500 &deg, C) to 2158.48 m2 g&minus, 1 (1100 &deg, C). XRD and Raman analyses revealed that ACP graphitization also increased with the activation temperature. For activation at 1100 &deg, C, the maximum specific capacitance was 255 F g&minus, 1, and over 92% of its capacitance was retained after 2000 cycles.

Significance: Infrared thermographs (IRTs) have been used for fever screening during infectious disease epidemics, including severe acute respiratory syndrome, Ebola virus disease, and coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Although IRTs have significant potential for human body temperature measurement, the literature indicates inconsistent diagnostic performance, possibly due to wide variations in implemented methodology. A standardized method for IRT fever screening was recently published, but there is a lack of clinical data demonstrating its impact on IRT performance. Aim: Perform a clinical study to assess the diagnostic effectiveness of standardized IRT-based fever screening and evaluate the effect of facial measurement location. Approach: We performed a clinical study of 596 subjects. Temperatures from 17 facial locations were extracted from thermal images and compared with oral thermometry. Statistical analyses included calculation of receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves and area under the curve (AUC) values for detection of febrile subjects. Results: Pearson correlation coefficients for IRT-based and reference (oral) temperatures were found to vary strongly with measurement location. Approaches based on maximum temperatures in either inner canthi or full-face regions indicated stronger discrimination ability than maximum forehead temperature (AUC values of 0.95 to 0.97 versus 0.86 to 0.87, respectively) and other specific facial locations. These values are markedly better than the vast majority of results found in prior human studies of IRT-based fever screening. Conclusion: Our findings provide clinical confirmation of the utility of consensus approaches for fever screening, including the use of inner canthi temperatures, while also indicating that full-face maximum temperatures may provide an effective alternate approach.

Significance: Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is an irreversible and progressive disorder that damages brain cells and impairs the cognitive abilities of the affected. Developing a sensitive and cost-effective method to detect Alzheimer’s biomarkers appears vital in both a diagnostic and therapeutic perspective. Aim: Our goal is to develop a sensitive and reliable tool for detection of amyloid β (1-42) peptide (Aβ42), a major AD biomarker, using fiber-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (FERS). Approach: A hollow core photonic crystal fiber (HCPCF) was integrated with a conventional Raman spectroscopic setup to perform FERS measurements. FERS was then coupled with surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) to further amplify the Raman signal thanks to a combined FERS-SERS assay. Results: A minimum 20-fold enhancement of the Raman signal of Aβ42 as compared to a conventional Raman spectroscopy scheme was observed using the HCPCF-based light delivery system. The signal was further boosted by decorating the fiber core with gold bipyramids generating an additional SERS effect, resulting in an overall 200 times amplification. Conclusions: The results demonstrate that the use of an HCPCF-based platform can provide sharp and intense Raman signals of Aβ42, in turn paving the way toward the development of a sensitive label-free detection tool for early diagnosis of AD.

Laser energy sealing systems have attracted much attention over the past decade given the general shift in surgical paradigm toward less invasive surgical approaches. Given this, it is paramount to have an objective method with which the quality of energy seals can be evaluated. Current methodologies used for this purpose can be problematic in the evaluation of small vessel seals. A methodology employing Doppler optical coherence tomography (DOCT) for the evaluation of energy seals is introduced. Avian chorioallantoic membrane vessels were subjected to thulium laser irradiation and were then scanned via OCT. Outcomes were classified based on several markers, predominantly the presence or absence of flow postirradiation. Vessel diameter and general morphology were also taken into consideration. Vessels were classified into four groups: seal (29%), rupture (30%), partial seal (19%), and unaffected (22%). All vessels were also evaluated visually by a trained neurovascular surgeon, and these visually classified outcomes were compared with DOCT evaluated outcomes. It was found that whether the vessel was considered sealed or not sealed was dependent on the evaluation method (p=0.01) where visual classification resulted in 18% more seals than DOCT classification. The VIP experiment performed an accurate investigation of the Pauli Exclusion Principle for electrons. The apparatus was installed in the Gran Sasso Laboratories of the National Institute of Nuclear Physic in Italy, an underground environment with an extremely low cosmic background. The aim of the experiment was to test the Pauli Exclusion Principle for electrons in a copper target circulated by a Direct Current (DC) current, searching for X-rays emission due to an atomic transition forbidden by Pauli exclusion principle, from the L shell to the K shell of copper when the K shell is already occupied by two electrons. VIP set an upper limit on the Pauli exclusion principle violation probability 1/2β 2 –29. The goal of the upgraded VIP-2 experiment, presently in data taking at Gran Sasso Laboratories, is to improve this limit by two orders of magnitude. The VIP-2 experimental apparatus, in which the Silicon Drift Detectors have the key role of X-ray detectors, and preliminary results are presented.

This study presents 5-hydroxymethylfurfural removal from waste hand paper hydrolysate using activated carbon adsorption. In this context, the effects of adsorbent dosage, initial 5-hydroxymethylfurfural concentration, temperature, and agitation speed on 5-hydroxymethylfurfural adsorption were investigated. Moreover, isotherm and kinetic evaluations were performed using Langmuir, Freundlich, and Temkin models. The experimental data were correlated with zero, first, pseudo-first, and Weber–Morris intraparticle diffusion models. The toxicity of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural was determined using the resazurin reduction assay, and the EC50 of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural in the hydrolysate was found as 192 mg/L. Most convenient 5-hydroxymethylfurfural adsorption was obtained at 5 g/L AC dosage, 40 °C and 150 rpm agitation speed. The highest 5-hydroxymethylfurfural removal efficiency was 92% at 7 g/L AC dosage. The adsorption data fitted best with the Langmuir isotherm model with a maximum uptake capacity of 70.92 mg/g (R2: 0.96). The zero-order reaction kinetic model was the most suitable one among the others inspected. It was determined that intraparticle diffusion was not the rate-limiting step. This study showed that waste hand paper hydrolysate can effectively be detoxified by activated carbon adsorption. © 2019, Islamic Azad University (IAU).

Estazolam (EST) is a common sedative-hypnotic drug with a risk of abuse. Therefore, rapid on-site detection of EST is necessary to control the abuse of EST. In this paper, a fast, simple, and sensitive method is demonstrated for the detection of EST in both water and beverages, using surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) techniques. Au@Ag core-shell nanoparticles (NPs) assembled on the filter paper as a SERS substrate exhibit good applicability and practicality. At the same time, density functional theory (DFT) is used to assign the vibration mode of the EST molecules, which can be used as a guide for subsequent experiments. The lowest detectable concentration of EST in aqueous solution can be as low as 5 mg/L, and signal uniformity is excellent (RSD687 = 5.56%, RSD1000 = 4.35%). In addition, EST components artificially added to orange juice and pomegranate juice can be effectively detected by simple pretreatment with a minimum detection concentration as low as 10 mg/L. Therefore, this study found that the use of Au@Ag core-shell nanoparticles paper-based SERS substrate provides a quick and easy method for the detection of illegally added drugs in beverages.

The VIP collaboration is performing high precision tests of the Pauli Exclusion Principle for electrons in the extremely low cosmic background environment of the Underground Gran Sasso Laboratories of INFN (Italy). The experimental technique consists in introducing a DC current in a copper conductor, searching for the X-rays emission due to a PEP-forbidden atomic transition from the L shell to the K shell of copper when the K shell is already occupied by two electrons. VIP set un upper limit on the PEP violation probability 1 2 β 2 < 4.7 × 10 − 29 , the aim of the upgraded VIP-2 experiment is to improve this result by two orders of magnitude at least. The experimental setup and the results of preliminary data analyses will be presented.

The development of viable point-of-care diagnostic formats is integral to achieving better patient care and improved outcomes. The need for robust and low-cost tests is especially important in under-resourced and rural settings. Perhaps the greatest challenge is ensuring that an untrained individual is capable of operating and interpreting the test, out with a care facility. Here we present a paper-based diagnostic device capable of sensing miR-29a using both colorimetric and surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) analysis. Rather, than carry out the two types of analyses in tandem, we envisage that the colorimetric output is easy enough to be interpreted by the untrained-individual administering the test to provide them with qualitative feedback. If deemed positive, the test can be further validated at a centralized care facility using a handheld-Raman spectrometer to provide a semi-quantitative result. Detection of miR-29a, a microRNA associated with myocardial infarction, was achieved at a level of pg μL-1 through the combination of three-dimensional paper-based microfluidics, colorimetric detection, and surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) analysis. RGB analysis of the colorimetric output generated from samples containing miR-29a at different concentrations (18-360 pg μL-1) showed differentiation from the control sample, however significant repeat variability indicated that it could not be used for quantifying miR-29a levels. However, the SERS analysis exhibited greater reproducibility at varying concentrations, achieving an LoD of 47 pg μL-1. The union of the paper-based device and the two analysis methods resulted in the production of a sensitive, reproducible and facile, point of care test (POCT), which paves the way for future implementation in the diagnosis of a range of diseases.

Herein, we reported a simple, flexible and sensitive surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrate to detect methyl parathion residues in real life. The substrate was fabricated by filter paper and gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) with excellent reproducibility and stability. First, Au NPs were synthesized by the seed mediated growth method and assembled to the filter paper through immersion. The Raman probe molecule 4-MBA was used to evaluate performance of the substrate for an optimized signal using a portable Raman spectrometer coupled with 785 nm laser. Then, the paper-based substrate was applied to detect methyl parathion standard solution whose detection limit was down to 0.011 μg/cm2, and the linear range was between 0.018 μg/cm2 and 0.354 μg/cm2. Afterwards, actual sample (apple) spiked with methyl parathion was taken to verify the practicality of the substrate by a simple way of “press–peel off”. The recovery rate was ranged from 94.09% to 98.72%, indicating that this method is reliable in actual sample detection without complicated pretreatment steps. This work demonstrates that the flexible paper-based substrate combined with portable Raman instruments can be potentially applied to on-site detection of hazardous substances in the field of food safety.

We report the development of a surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy sensor chip by decorating gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) on ZnO nanorod (ZnO NR) arrays vertically grown on cellulose paper (C). We show that these chips can enhance the Raman signal by 1.25 × 107 with an excellent reproducibility of 92% clinical sensitivity and specificity. Our technology has the potential to be used for the early detection of prenatal diseases and can be adapted for point-of-care applications.

Фільтрація профілю є одним з важливих етапів оцінки профілю поверхні паперу. Під фільтрацією розуміють методи (електричні, оптичні, механічні, математичні) для вибору необхідної інформації із загального профілю поверхні. Для визначення впливу мікрогеометрії на експлуатаційні властивості необхідно спочатку виключити з профілю такі фактори, як перешкоди та похибки приладу. Вплив перешкод, особливо з боку навколишнього середовища, неминучий при записі профілів, до того ж для повного нівелювання похибки приладу досліджуваного зразка необхідна велика кількість часу. Отже, необхідно розробити математичну модель для фільтрації нерівностей профілю поверхні паперу. Мета дослідження: розробити методику цифрової обробки профілограм поверхні паперу для подальшого встановлення взаємозв’язку параметрів паперу з якістю відбитків. Використано математичний підхід на основі фільтру Гауса та аналіз профілограм, отриманих контактним та оптичним методами профілометрії. Розроблено програмне забезпечення на основі програмного пакету Free Pascal. Для проведення експериментальних досліджень використані профілограми поверхонь різних видів паперу, які були отримані в попередніх дослідженнях за допомогою профілометра з індуктивним перетворювачем, модель 296. Розроблено програмне забезпечення для фільтрації нерівностей профілю поверхні незадрукованого або задрукованого паперу з використанням фільтру Гаусса, що дозволяє отримати профілограми, виключивши з профілю такі фактори, як перешкоди та похибки, викликані випадковими вібраціями, розраховувати відповідні показники шорсткості, та встановити в подальшому взаємозв’язок з якістю відбитків на цьому папері. Filtering profile is one of the important stages of evaluation of the surface profile of the paper. The term ‘filtration’ should be understood as the methods (electrical, optical, mechanical, mathematical) to select the necessary information from the general profile of the surface. The impact of interference, especially emanating from the environment is inevitable when recording profiles. Above that, to level completely the device error of the test sample it is necessary to spend a large amount of time. Therefore, it is necessary to develop a mathematical model for the filtration of roughness of the surface paper profile. Goal of the research: to develop a technique for digital processing of paper surface profilographs to the further identifying the relation between the paper parameters and quality of the prints. The mathematical approach based on Gaussian filter and the analysis of profilograms obtained by the contact and optical methods of profilometry were used. It was developed software on the basis of Free Pascal software package as well. In order to provide the experimental investigations, profilograms of surfaces of various types of paper obtained in previous studies using a profilometer with an inductive converter, model 296 were used. Software for filtering the roughness of the surface profile of unprinted or printed paper using Gaussian filter, which allows to receive profilograms, eliminating in the profile the factors such as obstacles and errors caused by random vibrations, as well as to calculate the relevant roughness indexes, and to identify in the future the interaction with the quality of the prints on this paper.

Bayesian optimisation is a sample-efficient search methodology that holds great promise for accelerating drug and materials discovery programs. A frequently-overlooked modelling consideration in Bayesian optimisation strategies however, is the representation of heteroscedastic aleatoric uncertainty. In many practical applications it is desirable to identify inputs with low aleatoric noise, an example of which might be a material composition which consistently displays robust properties in response to a noisy fabrication process. In this paper, we propose a heteroscedastic Bayesian optimisation scheme capable of representing and minimising aleatoric noise across the input space. Our scheme employs a heteroscedastic Gaussian process (GP) surrogate model in conjunction with two straightforward adaptations of existing acquisition functions. First, we extend the augmented expected improvement (AEI) heuristic to the heteroscedastic setting and second, we introduce the aleatoric noise-penalised expected improvement (ANPEI) heuristic. Both methodologies are capable of penalising aleatoric noise in the suggestions and yield improved performance relative to homoscedastic Bayesian optimisation and random sampling on toy problems as well as on two real-world scientific datasets. The initial conditions of our universe appear to us in the form of a classical probability distribution that we probe with cosmological observations. In the current leading paradigm, this probability distribution arises from a quantum mechanical wavefunction of the universe. Here we ask what the imprint of quantum mechanics is on the late time observables. We show that the requirement of unitary time evolution, colloquially the conservation of probabilities, fixes the analytic structure of the wavefunction and of all the cosmological correlators it encodes. In particular, we derive in perturbation theory an infinite set of single-cut rules that generalize the Cosmological Optical Theorem and relate a certain discontinuity of any tree-level $n$-point function to that of lower-point functions. Our rules are closely related to, but distinct from the recently derived Cosmological Cutting Rules. They follow from the choice of the Bunch-Davies vacuum and a simple property of the (bulk-to-bulk) propagator and are astoundingly general: we prove that they are valid for fields with a linear dispersion relation and any mass, any integer spin and arbitrary local interactions with any number of derivatives. They also apply to general FLRW spacetimes admitting a Bunch-Davies vacuum, including de Sitter, slow-roll inflation, power-law cosmologies and even resonant oscillations in axion monodromy. The development of highly sensitive and selective methods for the detection of microRNA (miRNA) has attracted tremendous attention because of its importance in fundamental biological studies and diagnostic applications. In this work, we develop DNA-encoded Raman-active anisotropic nanoparticles modified origami paper analytical devices (oPADs) for rapid, highly sensitive, and specific miRNA detection. The Raman-active anisotropic nanoparticles were prepared using 10-mer oligo-A, -T, -C, and -G to mediate the growth of Ag cubic seeds into Ag nanoparticles (AgNPs) with different morphologies. The resulting AgNPs were further encoded with DNA probes to serve as effective surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) probes. The analytical device was then fabricated on a single piece of SERS probes loaded paper-based substrate and assembled based on the principles of origami. The addition of the target analyte amplifies the Raman signals on DNA-encoded AgNPs through a target-dependent, sequence specific DNA hybridization assembly. This simple and low-cost analytical device is generic and applicable to a variety of miRNAs, allowing detection sensitivity down to 1 pM and assay time within 15 min, and therefore holds promising applications in point-of-care diagnostics.

Purpose: We present a phase-contrast x-ray tomography study of wild type C57BL/6 mouse hearts as a nondestructive approach to the microanatomy on the scale of the entire excised organ. Based on the partial coherence at a home-built phase-contrast μ - CT setup installed at a liquid metal jet source, we exploit phase retrieval and hence achieve superior image quality for heart tissue, almost comparable to previous synchrotron data on the whole organ scale. Approach: In our work, different embedding methods and heavy metal-based stains have been explored. From the tomographic reconstructions, quantitative structural parameters describing the three-dimensional (3-D) architecture have been derived by two different fiber tracking algorithms. The first algorithm is based on the local gradient of the reconstructed electron density. By performing a principal component analysis on the local structure-tensor of small subvolumes, the dominant direction inside the volume can be determined. In addition to this approach, which is already well established for heart tissue, we have implemented and tested an algorithm that is based on a local 3-D Fourier transform. Results: We showed that the choice of sample preparation influences the 3-D structure of the tissue, not only in terms of contrast but also with respect to the structural preservation. A heart prepared with the evaporation-of-solvent method was used to compare both algorithms. The results of structural orientation were very similar for both approaches. In addition to the determination of the fiber orientation, the degree of filament alignment and local thickness of single muscle fiber bundles were obtained using the Fourier-based approach. Conclusions: Phase-contrast x-ray tomography allows for investigating the structure of heart tissue with an isotropic resolution below 10 μ m . The fact that this is possible with compact laboratory instrumentation opens up new opportunities for screening samples and optimizing sample preparation, also prior to synchrotron beamtimes. Further, results from the structural analysis can help in understanding cardiovascular diseases or can be used to improve computational models of the heart.

Computational models predicting cell damage responses to transient temperature rises generated by exposure to lasers have implemented the damage integral (Ω), which time integrates the chemical reaction rate constant described by Arrhenius. However, few published reports of empirical temperature histories (thermal profiles) correlated with damage outcomes at the cellular level are available to validate the breadth of applicability of the damage integral. In our study, an analysis of photothermal damage rate processes in cultured retinal pigment epithelium cells indicated good agreement between temperature rise, exposure duration (τ), and threshold cellular damage. Full-frame thermograms recorded at high magnification during laser exposures were overlaid with fluorescence damage images taken 1 h postexposure. From the image overlays, pixels of the thermogram correlated with the boundary of cell death were used to extract threshold thermal profiles. Assessing photothermal responses at these boundaries standardized all data points, irrespective of laser irradiance, damage size, or optical and thermal properties of the cells. These results support the hypothesis that data from boundaries of cell death were equivalent to a minimum visible lesion, where the damage integral approached unity (Ω=1) at the end of the exposure duration. Empirically resolved Arrhenius coefficients for use in the damage integral determined from exposures at wavelengths of 2 μm and 532 nm and durations of 0.05–20 s were consistent with literature values. Varying ambient temperature (Tamb) between 20°C and 40°C during laser exposure did not change the τ-dependent threshold peak temperature (Tp). We also show that, although threshold laser irradiance varied due to pigmentation differences, threshold temperatures were irradiance independent.
