This report aims to show the proceeding by which die Hispano-Venetian political and literary debate, born as a consecuence of successful Boccalinrs Pietra di paragone político, reduces itself to a sharp personal controversy between Francisco de Quevedo and Giacomo Castellani with their «avisos de Parnaso» titled La República de Venecia llega al Parnaso… and the Castigo esemplare de' calunniatori respectively. After drawing die rippled cultural and political panorama that gave rise to the intense para-literature between pro-Savoyard and philo-Spanish where the two above-mentioned libéis are inserted, this work attentively analyses the three texts written by Castellani as an answer to the anti-Venetian aviso ascribed to Quevedo: Annotationi, Allegatione and Castigo esemplare…. In this way it comes to underline, first of all, its declared anti-Spanish purpose and, secondly, its progressive transfor-mation in a personal attack against Francisco de Quevedo. Finally it ends by proving the presence in Castellani's pamphlet, be-hind an effective satirical and parodical texture, of a real denunciation of Quevedo's involvement in the culminant event of the early seven-teenth century Hispano-Venetian dispute: the conspiracy of Venice of 1618 Ascension-day. This essay examines common ground between two recent novels: Die Wahl (2003) by Erika Pluhar and Jessica, 30. (2004) by Marlene Streeruwitz. Both writers' women protagonists have lovers who are politicians, and both texts engage with Austrian politics, set as they are against the backdrop of the growing acceptability of populist, right-wing politics in contemporary Austria. These modern 'Entwicklungsromane' show the development of a sense of resolve in their respective protagonists. Where Pluhar's novel makes playful reference to trivial literature conventions at a diegetic level only, Streeruwitz uses and manipulates the format of a popular literary form - the woman's novel, or 'chick-lit' novel - to assist her in interrogating political events in Austria at the time of the novel's setting. Despite their outward appearance as trivial romance stories, both novels have strong political agendas. A literary criticism of war poems written by Marianne Moore during the 1940s is presented. The ethics of feeling, biblical allusion, and political alliances expressed by Moore in her poetry, drafts, and notes are examined. Particular focus is given to the poem "In Distrust of Merits." The condemnation of inhumanity in Moore's work is also explored.

In Silius Italicus' Punica the Second Punic War is cast as a conflict fought over and between heads, and the decapitations in the epic thereby become ways of measuring the different trajectories and ultimate outcomes for each side in the war: the symbolic decapitation of Rome on the occasion of Paulus' death at Cannae in book 10 marks the low-ebb in the city's fortunes while the many decapitations perpetrated by Romans after Cannae reflect Carthage's own slide toward final defeat, an event that entails her symbolic decapitation too. Read in relation to this epic-wide program, Hannibal's abiding enmity toward Jupiter, the god of Rome's head, the Capitolium, gains greater clarity and purpose, as do his identification with Lucan's Pompey and Carthage's with Virgil's Priam toward the end of the epic. This concluding development is also succinctly recapitulated in the epic's final two lines, where an allusion to the final two lines of Bellum Civile 8 invites us to contrast Rome and Jupiter with Lucan's decapitated Pompey and to compare Carthage and Hannibal with him. Dwight Waldo (1913–2000) is commonly known as a “heterodox” critic of the dichotomy between politics and administration. But is this reputation supported by his writings? It seems to be primarily based on The Administrative State (1948) and other early publications, in which he conceptualized politics/administration narrowly as deciding/executing and, indeed, sharply criticized it. Waldo’s later publications, by contrast, offer much broader conceptualizations and a more ambivalent, even positive appraisal of the dichotomy. Such conceptualizations are also found in an important unpublished book Waldo worked on during several phases of his career. On the basis of these published and unpublished writings, we should reconsider Waldo’s reputation and, pursuing his line of reasoning, reconceptualize the politics–administration dichotomy as a layered construct and reappreciate it as a constitutional doctrine. The article seeks to use the pact factor to interpret Kourouma's ground-breaking novel, Les Soleils des indépendances. The sinister figure of the predatory trickster is discernible in the profiles of the crafty man of religion and the wily dictator, both using myths of legitimization to enhance the success of their pacts with others. A pattern of deceit can also be observed in various societal compacts.
