In light of recent calls for decolonial approaches to Indigenous language learning, documentation, and reclamation, we describe the creation of a digital archive initiated and sustained by community collaboration. We work with members of the three federally recognized Cherokee tribes to translate and analyze Cherokee texts. Cherokee speakers participate in the narrative commentary around these previously dormant texts. We find three ways in which a digital archive can be leveraged for language reclamation, description, and documentation, while being initiated and sustained by community collaboration: (a) by developing collaborative translation environments across communities of users, (b) by developing software engineering methods to build reliable infrastructure for the archive, and (c) by creating collaborative workflows that center community practices and design insights. Translating historically dormant texts for this archive creates a use‐inspired language act central to language description, documentation, and reclamation. The collective translation process of building this digital archive provides a sense of continuity that grounds language learning in use‐inspired practices. Going forward, we will continue to center speaker and community‐use‐inspired language practice as we expand the archive to support more types of community contributions and other languages. The article refers to the indigenous Cherokee language manuscripts and development of digital archive to preserve its culture and traditions. Topics include the creation of a community-based tool "The Digital Archive of American Indian Language Preservation and Perseverance (DAILP)"; operation of application which will be helpful for institutions and communities; and need of developing a link between language learning and dissemination of historical documents.

Kickapoo who moved from the USA into northern Mexico since 1839 have written in a syllabary they identified as created by Sequoyah for the Cherokee. Possible scenarios for how the Kickapoo may have learned the Cherokee syllabary are examined. However, some authors have reported that the Kickapoo in Mexico used the less famous Great Lakes Algonquian Syllabary (GLAS), not the Cherokee syllabary. A new line of evidence is presented concerning the label that the Kickapoo use to name the syllabary, evidence that proves the syllabary they have used is the GLAS, not Sequoyah's. Building on this evidence, new insights about the unexpected shape of some of the GLAS symbols are presented, along with clues about the creator(s) of the GLAS. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Cherokee Nation in Oklahoma has enacted a revitalization plan to promote Cherokee language in a variety of settings, and many tribal citizens have begun to confront how language factors into their identities as Cherokees. In particular, Tsalagi Dideloquasdi, the Cherokee immersion school, has become an important sociolinguistic site for the articulation of deeply seated beliefs and attitudes about issues such as the practicality of the language in contemporary times and who has a legitimate right to learn and speak the language. The purpose of this paper is to elucidate these attitudes and beliefs as well as the ideologies that inform them. Assuming a critical ethnographic stance, I examine the hegemonic discourses and structures that have led to the loss of Cherokee over generations as well as to three ideologies - impracticality, legitimacy, and hope - that influence the current efforts of the immersion school stakeholders. It further discusses that the number of newly "citizen discovered" species in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, U.S.; bear sanctuaries now open for hunting in Western North Carolina, U.S.; and also mentions about the U.S. Forest Service plans to expand timber harvests.

High Tone (excluding atonic superhigh accent) in Oklahoma Cherokee can be divided into three types: (i) Lexical High Tone. (ii) High Tone imposed on the final vowel of the verb stem. and (iii) High Tone caused by prepronominal prefixes. This claim is supported by their different behaviors with regard to the direction of tone spreading, tone-bearing unit, atonic forms, and blocking of the Laryngeal Alternation rule. I also claim that among these three High Tones. Lexical High Tone, which has been considered to be lexically determined and not predictable, is in fact derived from an underlying glottal stop, which has been considered to trigger only Lowfall (or falling)Tone. This article presents news and comments related to Appalachians and the Appalachian Region, which were published in previous issues of different journals. In the June 14, 2007 issue of "San Diego Union Tribune," Samira Jafari reported that 85 households along the Ridgeline Road in Kentucky lack running water. In the May 19, 2007 issue of "London Daily Telegraph," Robert Colville reviewed the book "Rant," by Chuck Palahniuk. In the February 25, 2007 issue of the "Raleigh News Observer," Travis Long provided information on a study on Cherokee language, conducted on behalf of the Eastern Band of Cherokees.

Literacy in Cherokee became almost universal in the Nation after 1825, and literacy in English was widespread as well. Literacy had a profound effect on the way Cherokee culture evolved throughout the rest of the century leading to a situation in which the Indian community was very often more "civilized" than the white settlements that surrounded it. Indian writers and publishing flourished during the nineteenth century impacting education, internal politics, U. S. Relations, and economic affairs. This article examines the life and legacy of Sequoyah, a Cherokee Indian who created the Cherokee Syllabary, which allowed the language to be written down. The author is concerned with separating the myth from fact but acknowledges very little about him can be determined with accuracy, including his birth and death dates.

The article presents information about a bilingual educational program of the Bilingual Education Center in Cherokee, Oklahoma, meant for teaching Cherokee-speaking pupils. The Center conducts in-service training sessions each school year in order to prepare teachers to work with Cherokee children and to help teachers and aides develop skills and attitudes necessary for a closer and more efficient working relationship. Teaching the pupils to speak correct English is only one part of the program. Another objective of the program is to help those who speak Cherokee improve their language and to teach the same to those who are not already fluent in it.
