Abstract

The article focuses on the New Kituwah Academy which intends to preserve the spoken language of the Cherokee tribe. It cites the possible disappearance of the language, as well as the average age of Kituwah speaker. Students were also taught customs, culture and traditional academics. It notes that first grade students have mastered 86 characters in the written syllabary. It mentions the goals of adult classes, such as training of potential teachers and creation of community speakers.
