Abstract

The author reflects on Sequoyah's (Cherokee) syllabary which was an effort to preserve and revitalize tribal languages of American Indians. He mentions that while Sequoyah's syllabary was initially met with skepticism, it proved to be a vital tool for communication, especially for the Cherokees of Arkansas and Oklahoma. He also points out that Sequoyah's invention transformed the education system of the Cherokees which in effect preserved their culture and language.
