In June, 2001 the CITY2000 Foundation donated 500,000 photographic negatives, over 500 audio- and videotapes, and office archives to the University of Illinois at Chicago. The collection represents an image time capsule of a major American city during the year of the millennium. Every class of individual, event of the year, and neighborhood was explored by 200 professional photographers and brought together in this unique archive. As part of its agreement in accepting the archive, the UIC Library committed to making the collection available at least until the year 3000. The article discusses the collaborative efforts of Washington Rural Heritage (WRH) project to enable small, rural cultural institutions and libraries to create digital collections available to anyone. It highlights the federal Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) to provide server space for web development and on-site digitization of cultural heritage materials. It also notes the move of Columbia County Rural Library District to built a collection of early schoolhouse photographs.

Marketing is a pervasive societal activity that goes considerably beyond the selling of toothpaste, soap, and steel. The authors interpret the meaning of marketing for nonbusiness organizations and the nature of marketing functions such as product improvement, pricing, distribution, and communication in such organizations. The accumulation of large collections by members of the American Association of Research Libraries is seen by them as fundamental to their research support role. This article outlines collection development and management practice and policy of the association members between 1945 and 1979. The study is a critical history where narrative is accompanied by analysis and context. Collecting policy and practice is reviewed with a focus on the strategies adopted to cope with the consequences of growth which led to pressure on capacity. A critique of collections policy reviews three significant causal factors: institutional competition, the conception of the role of librarian as a "bookman" as opposed to manager, and the belief that collections would be of longer-term value to the university in that they transcended immediate needs. The advent of usage studies is examined, and the implications of the study for current policy concerning printed collections are discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article presents information on the Dance Notation Bureau (DNB). Founded in 1940, the bureau occupies a series of rooms in New York City. The staff, volunteers and interns of the DNB handles the staging contracts, notation projects, educational programs, library loans and grant applications. The DNB created the Dance Notation Bureau Press in the 1970s to publish notation scores and books. The bureau also established its library in 1952 that maintains a collection of dance and movement notations.

This paper reports a case study, which was conducted during the doctoral study by the author. It seeks to discover the strength of information literature contained in the British Library Document Supply Centre in whatever form for the expansion of research. The multi method approach was used for collecting the data using two different instruments quantitative questionnaire and qualitative, semi-structured interview technique. One-day study visit was arranged to obtain detailed information regarding the latest opportunities for the researchers worldwide. After guided tour around the centre, the semi-structured interview approach was used. The data has been updated by use Of Internet in 2007. It shows that it provides a very rapid and comprehensive document supply and interlibrary loan service to researchers in all kinds of libraries and organizations using post, fax or other electronic, delivery by ordering from theft online catalogues. It emerged from the case study that libraries and other information centres in developing countries (including Pakistan) must change. The Records of the Colorado Flower Growers Association (CFGA) is an archival collection documenting the association prior to its 1979 name change. The CFGA was founded in 1928 to support the production and marketing of greenhouse flowers grown commercially in the state. In 1979, the organization changed its name to the Colorado Greenhouse Growers Association to reflect the increasing diversification of the industry. The collection consists of documents dated 1928 to 1980 (with the bulk falling between 1958 and 1972), and includes minutes from general, board, and committee meetings; correspondence; newsletters; financial reports; scrapbooks; clippings; and photographic materials. This article provides a history of Colorado carnations, information on the collection, and describes a digital project supported by a cooperative agreement between the Agriculture Network Information Center (AgNIC) and the Colorado State University (CSU) Libraries to make a selection of the scrapbooks, clippings, newsletters, and photographic materials available online to researchers through the AgNIC Web site. In addition to providing access to more than 500 digital images, project staff developed important metadata to facilitate their discovery, retrieval, and management using the Standard NAL Metadata and the Collaborative Digitization Project (CDP)'s Dublin Core Metadata Best Practices. This article briefly reports several news items from the field of literature publishing and research. It reports that the American Library Association (ALA) announces the publication in Spanish of its popular wallet-sized "Quotable Facts About America's Libraries." Available from the ALA Public Information Office, the piece was compiled with assistance from the ALA Office for Research & Statistics, the ALA Washington Office, and the Library Research Service at Colorado State Library. The Consortium of Latin American Studies Programs announced the winners of the 2004 Americas Award for Children's and Young Adult Literature. The award is given annually in recognition of U.S. works of fiction, poetry, folklore, or nonfiction published in the previous year in English or Spanish that authentically and engagingly portray Latin America, the Caribbean, or Latinos. It is further reported that the Copper Canyon Press recently announced the launch of "Poems Aloud," an international program designed for readers to read and listen to poems in personal settings with family and friends. SAGE Publications Inc. announces that its reference encyclopedias will now be electronically published by the Gale Virtual Reference Library.

This article discusses developments in the Association for Library Collections and Technical Services (ALCTS). Officers were elected to the following ALCTS sections: Council of Regional Groups, Acquisitions, Cataloging and Classification, Collection Management and Development, Preservation and Reformatting, and Serials. Agenda items of a January 10, 2004 meeting of the Committee to Study Serials Cataloging in San Diego, California include: update on the 2004 American Library Association Annual Conference; the ANSI/NISO Z39.71 standard "Holdings Statements for Bibliographic Items"; and conduct of business via electronic mail messages. Agenda items of the January 12, 2004 meeting of the same committee include: participation of the United States Library of Congress in the German-based Electronic Journals Library; and review of the ISSN Standard ISO 3297.

This introduction to Africana reference describes the populations of researchers, the kinds of questions they ask, and how librarians-both specialist and generalist-may respond. It explores issues in "known-item" searches, including name authority and access to material in collected works and series. Choices made by authors, publishers, indexers, librarians, and researchers themselves have an impact on topic searches. Terminology for African languages, ethnic groups, place names, and topics cause problems for novice researchers, but library policy decisions can also impede access. Errors of all kinds-minor or major-can block access to information. The speed of electronic desktop publishing seems to have encouraged reduced care with proofreading, indexing, and verification of quotations and citations. The need for accurate information about Africa is great, but the market for publications and electronic resources focused on Africa is relatively small. This low market share can result in less coverage of Africa in indexes and reference tools. Despite the difficulties encountered in researching Africa, researchers and the librarians who assist them benefit from the tools, services, and initiatives of specialist Africana librarians and from a number of commercially produced resources. Rare membership and lodge data from the late ninteenth-century American fraternal order provide support for the existence of "bridging ties" among its members along class and neighbourhood line, though not across racial or gender lines. Lodge-related political activity centered on issues of exclusivity, such as the desirability of non-English speaking members. The order's system of government was more top-heavy and hierarchical than democratic; decision-making power resided with established members at the organization's national level. Overall, the data paint a picture of an American fraternal lodge unlike that represented in the contemporary literature about social-capital formation in the Golden Age of Fraternity. IN NOVEMBER 2001, the Association of Research Libraries (ARL) announced the formation of a Task Force on Special Collections charged with developing an action plan to address a set of issues deemed significant by the ARL Board and membership. The establishment of the task force followed several years of ARL interest and activity in the area of special collections. This paper will review the stages through which ARL's engagement with special collections evolved, describe the motivation and rationale for initiating this engagement, discuss the perspectives that ARL brings to special collections, and provide a status report on the work of the task force. This essay reviews a field study project completed by the author at the Historical Society of Washington, D.C. during the Fall of 1999, which yielded an analytical collection guide arranged by historical subject areas. The guide provided improved topical access to manuscript collections, placed archival materials in a historical context, and strengthened the institution's documentation strategies by sampling and summarizing their holdings. This kind of archival description was focused on building historical context and expanding the archival elements of intellectual content and access, thereby making the material more accessible to patrons. The guide was an improvement from traditional collection guides, and can be replicated in both print and online environments. Although the project had a time limitation, the duplication or expansion of the steps indicated here can result in other archival repositories developing collection guides and finding aids with improved subject access, clearer relationships between collections, better contextual information, and a stronger sense of the institution's holdings. The midwinter meeting of the American Library Association which focused on electronic data interchange was held in San Antonio, Texas in January 2000. A report released by the Digital Library Federation investigates an object-oriented approach to digital library construction. The report, "Collections, Content and the Web" was published by the Council on Library and Information Resources about the effect of the World Wide Web on collections-based institutions.

This article builds on theoretical work in the social movements literature that uses "master frames" (Snow and Benford 1992) to account for the cyclical clustering of social movement activity within certain historical periods. I identify "master frame alignment" as the dynamic process by which social movement actors rhetorically transform the master frames within a cycle of protest to make them resonate more clearly with a movement's unique social and historical situation. Just as frame alignment processes serve to link a movement organization's activities, goals, and ideology with those of a potential group of adherents, master frame alignment processes link the activities, goals, and ideology of a movement organization with those espoused within the broader symbolic atmosphere of the social movement. I present historical data from Irish newspapers and political documents to show how the Irish Sinn Fëin movement, seeking self-determination during the early twentieth century, rhetorically reconstructed the master frames generated by the League of Nations in order to better exploit this particular window of political opportunity. The article focuses on the history of the scientific association in Pottsville, Pennsylvania during the period 1854 to 1862. On October 10, 1854 a small group of men with a common interest in science formed the Pottsville Scientific Association. The association stimulated its members' own studies. The association published several worthwhile contributions to science. The members accumulated a large collection of minerals and a library of some 700 bound volumes as well as a large collection of scientific papers. .

This article presents the report of the Division of Multimedia Production of the Association for Educational Communications and Technology (AECT) at the 2004 AECT Convention in Chicago, Illinois. Video production professionals, teachers and professors, business trainers and private consultants met to formalize the division and elect its first set of officers. With a lengthy mission statement, the group set out to provide support and create programs that will have an important impact on, as well as high interest for, the AECT convention in Orlando, Florida, in 2005.

Tess Cederholm has been named as Development Officer at the Boston Public Library. Paul Nauta has been appointed Secretary General of the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions. Massachusetts College of Art professor Diana Korzenik was awarded the L.L. Winship Book Award.

The article presents updates concerning the Art Libraries Society of North America (ARLIS/NA) as of December 1, 1987. It reports on the ARLIS/NA 15th Anniversary Fund Drive which aimed to raise $15,000, the proceeds of which will solely support the publication of the society's occasional papers. The fund drive which was officially launched at the society's membership meeting has as to date raised a total of $2,515. It also reports that the 1987 ARLIS/NA Handbook and List of Members is currently in production. The Western Regional Meeting of the society is scheduled for July 8 to 10, 1987.

The article discusses the U.S. Constitution and the legal rights of criminal defendants in America in relation to the 50th anniversary of the U.S. Supreme Court's ruling in the 1963 case Gideon v. Wainwright which deals with an indigent defendant's legal right to counsel in a criminal matter. Fair trials and the indigent defense system in Idaho are mentioned, along with the National Legal Aid and Defender Association (NLADA).

This article presents the highlights of an Art Libraries Society North America Eastern Regional Meeting on Preservation hosted by the Winterthur Library in Delaware on June 16, 1989. The procedure for submitting a successful grant proposal to the National Endowment for the Humanities which was the topic in the morning is discussed.

This section presents conference and meeting reports held by some art documentation and library associations in the U.S. in 1986. At the midwinter meeting of the ACRL Art Section of the American Library Association, the group worked on new activities and directions. The group also created three new committees. Meanwhile, business meeting of the Visual Resources Association (VRA) was held in New York City from February 13 to 14. The topic of VRA publications recurred throughout the meeting.
