Abstract

This article provides information on the Embroiderers' Guild of America Inc (EGA). Founded in 1958 and affiliated with the Embroiderers' Guild of London, the EGA objective was to set and maintain high standards of design, color, and workmanship in all kinds of embroidery and canvas work. Toward that end, the founding members formulated a vision for EGA and concluded that the guild would be dedicated to maintaining an office to handle guild business, offer examinations for teaching certificates, sponsor lectures, seminars, exhibitions, hope to broaden its educational resources and serve as an informational source for needle-women around the world. What once was the hope to broaden educational resources had become a reality. By the Fall 1978 issue of Needle Arts, correspondence course costs had increased and the first color cover of the journal appeared. Improvements continued in all programs. The development of the library, study boxes, and collections had steadily expanded the programs available to members. In order to meet the needs of membership and maintain current programs as of June 2005, EGA will be increasing membership dues, applying for government and foundation grants, and soliciting individual and corporate donations.
