Information about the fifth International Congress of Maritime History held in June 2008 in Greenwich, London, England is presented. In this event, 300 participants met to discuss more than 200 research papers that collectively demonstrated the breadth and increasing maturity of maritime history. Members in Greenwich also elected professor Jesús Valdaliso as the new president to guide the International Maritime Economic History Association over the next four years.

A strong association exists between the quality of nurse‐service user therapeutic relationship and care outcomes on acute mental health inpatient wards. Despite evidence that service users desire improved therapeutic engagement, and registered mental health nurses recognize the benefits of therapeutic relationships, such interactions remain sub‐optimal. There is a dearth of evidence on factors influencing implementation of interventions to support and encourage therapeutic engagement. This study aimed to understand the barriers and enablers to implementation of the Therapeutic Engagement Questionnaire (TEQ), across fifteen acute inpatient wards in seven English mental health organizations. Qualitative methods were used in which data were collected from ethnographic field notes and documentary review, coded, and analysed using thematic analysis. Theoretical framing supported data analysis and interpretation. Reporting adheres to the Standards for Reporting Qualitative Research. The TEQ as an evidence‐based intervention co‐produced with service users and nurses was valued and welcomed by many nurse directors, senior clinicians, and ward managers. However, a range of practical and perceptual factors impeded implementation. Furthermore, many existing contextual challenges for intervention implementation in acute inpatient wards were magnified by the COVID‐19 pandemic. Suitable facilitation to address these barriers can help support implementation of the TEQ, with some transferability to implementation of other interventions in these settings. Our study suggests several facilitation methods, brought together in a conceptual model, including encouragement of reflective, facilitative discussion meetings among stakeholders and researchers, effort put into winning nurse 'buy‐in' and identifying and supporting ward‐level agents of change. Most of the papers in this symposium were presented at a conference on the economics of information held at Stanford in April 1975, under the auspices of the National Science Foundation—National Bureau of Economic Research (four of the papers, those by Heal, Salop, Spence and Stiglitz, had been submitted to the Review earlier, but because of the similarity of topic, are published with the conference papers). The papers, though all related to the problems arising from costly information, are diverse both with respect to the question addressed, the techniques of analysis employed and the particular markets investigated. A basic theme running through most of the papers is that imperfect information alters, in a fundamental way, the conventional notion of a market, with buyers and sellers coming together to trade; in a full information equilibrium there is a single price, markets clear and all individuals and firms view themselves as price takers. The price charged is independent of the quantity purchased. Although the notion of the market-place is often thought of as an idealization, even when there is not a single market-place at which all transactions occur, the economy behaves as if there were a single market-place; this will be true so long as there are some arbitrageurs to make sure that the "law of single price" prevails. Finally, conventional theory has shown that under fairly weak conditions such a competitive equilibrium exists and is Pareto Optimal. Recent developments in the economics of information, including the papers presented here, have shown that ail of these statements are questionable. In the papers presented here, there is not a single price in equilibrium; firms do not act as price takers; prices do more than just clear markets—they convey information; prices charged may depend on the quantity purchased; competitive equilibrium may not exist and may not be Pareto Optimal. Information about several papers discussed at the meeting of the Council of the Royal Society held at the Royal Society in Burlington House in London, England on October 15, 1946. The event was arranged by Dr. H. Godwin in relation to the working conference on Quaternary History and Pollen-analysis organized through the British Council. Attendees discussed the need for facts in the form of discoveries of thermophilous plants in late-glacial or glacial deposits.

This article presents information about the proceedings of the annual meeting of the Standing Conference on Studies in Education, held on January 5, 1954, in the Council Room at King's College, London, England. College's Principal Peter Noble had welcomed the Conference members. Conference secretary J.W. Tibble had presented a report on the work of the Conference Committee during the year. After that, executive editor of the "British Journal of Educational Studies" A.C.F. Beales reported on the journal. He recalled the policy which had decided the form and make-up of the journal originally, and also the suggestions made during discussion at the previous annual meeting. The Editorial Board felt that the spread of the main articles in this year's issue was better balanced than in the past, and that the contents of the journal were still avoiding successfully any overlap into the fields for which other specialist journals already existed. In the course of discussion on the report several positive suggestions for future contents were offered for the Editorial Board's consideration. A revised draft of the Standing Conference, previously circulated, was then considered in conference, amended, and adopted.

The article reports on the significant events that had occurred in the Textile Institute, the official publication of textile industry in England for the past ten years. The paper was able to formulate the policy of the editorial board which aims to ensure enough coverage of the happenings in the industry. The list of members of the publication grow rapidly which shows that many are interested to share their views. The policies have become subject of individual discussion on the leader page of the periodical. The opinions expressed by the people in the publication has been helpful to the council. It was reported that the main source of disappointment for the past decade was the paucity of the letters to the editor. Moreover, the space evolved into a more confined area in the paper.

Obesity has been identified as an independent risk factor for a wide range of health conditions. Therefore, there is a clear need for high quality Bariatric research in order to improve patient selection, outcomes and safety for patients with obesity. We sought to identify and compare the quantitative and qualitative publication output from Bariatric centres in England. We identified 42 National Health Service (NHS) Trusts and 162 surgeons providing Bariatric services in England. A median of 4 (range 1–7) Bariatric surgeons were identified per centre. Eight NHS Trusts (19%) and 75 surgeons (46.3%) had no Bariatric publications during the study period, while 87 surgeons published a total of 432 Bariatric papers. Only 15 surgeons (9%) had ≥10 publications within the study period. However, these surgeons produced >50% of all Bariatric publications. Departments with more than 4 surgeons produced a significantly higher number of Bariatric publications (median 8.5 vs 2, p = 0.01). There is significant variation in research contribution amongst Bariatric centres in England. Academia should be encouraged and promoted across all bariatric services in order to broaden our understanding on Bariatric outcomes by expanding the service and proportional increase in funding. The article presents information on the meeting of the British Society for Dermatopathology, which was held on 19 July 1990, at Warwick, in England. Several scientists and scholars from the medical field presented their research papers and case reports at the meeting of the Society. Scientists R. Cerio and E. Wilson Jones discussed the concept of histogenesis of lamellar fibrosis. In addition, scientists N. Nolan and S. Rogers presented a case report on the sclerosing sweat duct carcinoma at the meeting.

The article reports on the cost of damage the fire incidents have brought in the textile industry in England. The journal of Fire Protection Assoc. (FPA), reported that textile industry have lost 11 million Euro dollar in 1971 due to the occurrence of fire in major textile manufacturing firms. There were 86 recorded fire in the year alone and each fire reportedly cost over 10, 000 Euro dollar respectively. According to FPA, the number of fire incidents in 1971 are nearly fourfold higher than the fire that happened in the previous years. The areas where the fires usually start include the storage area, preparation area and finishing areas. The common causes of fires are mechanical heat and sparks, smoking materials and electrical equipment or malicious ignition.

The article reports on the 50th annual general meeting of the British Association of Dermatology that was held in Sheffield, England on from July 9-11, 1970. At the meeting, officers for the association for the session 1970- 1971 were elected. Papers on the general theme of autoantibodies and the skin were also presented during the meeting. Mergers among housing associations have become a frequent phenomenon in both the Netherlands and England. The general literature on mergers highlights the need for research to consider the wider political and business environment, managerial motives and strategic choices, to adopt a process perspective and to evaluate outcomes in relation to competing definitions of goals and success criteria. This article applies these perspectives to consider drivers for and experience of housing association mergers in the Netherlands and England, competing motivations such as efficiency savings in relation to borrowing and procurement costs, improved professionalism and organisational capacity and external influence. We discuss the pace and motivations of mergers, the expected positive and negative effects, and actual outcomes. We focus on the impact of mergers on stakeholder satisfaction, housing production and operational costs. Based on our findings we discuss the implications for policies and practice in both countries. Our main conclusion is that the relationship between the size of housing associations and their performance is not straightforward. This is partly because large and small associations are generally trying to do different things in different ways and have contrasting strengths and weaknesses; thus judgements about whether mergers and concentration of ownership in third sector housing is a change for the better are dependent upon considerations of underlying purposes and success criteria. This article reports on the receipt of University of Cambridge, Cambridge, England Professor of Applied Economics David Newbery of the Outstanding Contributions to the Profession of Energy Economics Award in 2002 from the International Association for Energy Economics (IAEE). The Award was presented to Newbery at the IAEE Prague Conference in 2003. University of Cambridge has been the locus of his academic career, but he has spent time at other academic institutions, with organizations such as the World Bank, and has served on several commissions. His publication and research record is indeed prodigious, much of it relating to taxation, regulation, transportation, commodity pricing, cost-benefit analysis, resources, and especially of late, electricity. Here he has been spearheading research on electricity markets, dealing with the thorny problems of market liberalization, regulation, restructuring and privatization. His contributed paper on energy tax policy is indicative of his long term interest in this topic, an interest that dates back at least to the mid-1980s.

The article presents information on the 10th annual British Association for Counseling and Psychotherapy research conference in London, England in May 2006. The conference had a wonderful atmosphere and gained enormously from a wide mix of cultures and nationalities. This article develops a paper presented at the British Association of Interchurch Families 40th Anniversary Conference, Swanwick, UK, 23-25 August 2008. It is divided into two parts. The first part provides an introduction into the concept of 'domestic church', thereby referring briefly to its origins in the NT and in the early Church and focussing more extensively on its retrieval in the recent magisterial teaching of the Roman Catholic church. It is also asked in which areas of theology and faith practice the concept may be fruitful and where its possible shortcomings may lie. The second part explores what the significance of the concept could be for interchurch families and, vice versa, what interchurch families' specific contribution is to further developing the (idea of) domestic church. Information about several papers discussed at the Annual Meeting of the British Neuro-oncology Society (BNOS) to be held at Preston, England on June 25-27, 2008. During the event attendees discussed various topics including the standard mortality of patients suffering from central nervous system (CNS) tumours, research spending and imaginative approaches to clinical research.

Mine water scientists and engineers participated in the celebration of the election of IMWA member Professor Paul Younger at Newcastle University in England in October 2007 as a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering. The Coal Mine Sites for Targeted Remediation Research (CoSTaR) project of the HERO group at Newcastle University allows European scientists to study full-scale mine water treatment systems. There is an urgent need today for libraries of all sorts to have skilfull and communicative staff employed in their everyday public activities. As the experience from developed countries shows, most of them are trained librarians, although many could also be found within the ranks of such associations as the Friends of Libraries. In the United States they are the best ambassadors of libraries, in Australia there are no public libraries without local groups of library supporters. In England there are well known phenomena such as The Friends of Bodleian Library. The article presents the research paper which reflects on methods used by the Freshwater Biological Association to reduce the number of pike in Lake Windermere, England. Pikes reduced the food for the trouts, which are the most important fishes in the lake. The study found out that the long lining method caught more pikes but also eels and trout which could not be returned alive.

The article discusses the contents of a manifesto issued by a committee consisting of weavers from Barnsley, England, which emphasizes the need to support the petition of the Birmingham Political Union for parliamentary reforms. The Barnsley manifesto, which dwells on working-class hunger, misery and exploitation, would, on the surface, seem to lend credibility to the composite version. But radicalism in Barnsley, as in many other northern towns, was deeply embedded; its motive force transcended short-term economic hardships. Before the visit of the Birmingham delegation, the Barnsley working class had long been involved in serious radical politics. In the early 1830s many Barnsley workingmen took part in the Owenite cooperative movement, the trade union and Reform Bill agitations and the "war of the unstamped." Joseph Lingard, father of one of the signatories to the manifesto, was the local distributor of unstamped papers. He opened a reading room where workingmen not only read the contraband literature but also held political discussions. Local agitation for parliamentary reform was revived as early as 1835 when a local Radical Association was formed. The Chartist Manifesto encapsulates mainstream chartist thought. It appealed to working class poverty and suffering, but did so analytically. It further explained that labor was the creator of all wealth, but most of this wealth was siphoned off by those who never worked.

This paper was originally read to an Open Meeting of the Department of Psychotherapy in Cambridge in 1991.
