In 2016-2017, the popular video sharing platform YouTube was in the midst of a public relations crisis. Following the revelation that the platform had been monetizing controversial content, advertisers were publicly withdrawing from the platform. These events came to be known as the "Adpocalypse" and continue to have an impact on the platform. This exploratory study draws from institutional theory and precarious labour theory to understand the impact this event had on content creators on the platform. By examining discourse on the Adpocalypse in combination with reactions from prominent creators, I argue that the Adpocalypse--as a moment of YouTube's continued institutionalization--had a direct impact on the livelihoods of creators by increasing the precarious nature of their work; however, during this time creators also adopted new ways of navigating this precarity.
